hey this is JJ and Alex w’t be as you wrap up your day it’s time to get your fix of the teams you live for and the sports you love this is JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Zone hey everybody welcome on into the program JJ and Alex every day right here on your program on your radio dial or in your podcast in your pocket whatever you want to do I uh you know what I do I listen to a lot of music when I mow the lawn or if I do yard work if I going to walk but I’m I’m I have transitioned to Old Man what did you do I listen to podcasts while I’m walking now okay what are the podcast subjects you don’t have to promote the specific podcast no I do what are the topics so across the board because you know I like my F1 okay that’s not old man no no no no no but like uh I I listen to Bill Simmons podcast pretty pretty regularly kind of old man free economics so like I go freom I go full into if you’ve never done the fre economics it’s like basically it’s like it’s like on the it’s like Fringe NPR like uh not really no no no yeah can you can you listen to Freakonomics under the age of 40 and feel like and feel like you’re and I don’t know Freakonomics they hit up but what their whole thing is is they look into you know the economics of of little things here and there yeah it’s interesting but they talk you know as it pertains to Politics as it pertains to food anything and I like I’ve got to the point now where I listen to less music now I listen to a lot of the spoken word stuff and I do this move because I wear I wear headphones or I wear like Earp pods earpod gosh speaking of old man ear pods what the hell am I talking about which one which is it ear or air you tell me do you know it’s an airpod okay okay thank you but I yeah the earbuds I’m not that old I know the difference earbuds airpods all right I got I got them mixed up okay mixed mixed brand and I see people walking that are like in my neighborhood and I sometimes pretend like I’m on a phone call so that I don’t have to do you have both or one in I have both in okay you get away with that but I will walk and I will have a fake conversation sometimes so that I don’t have to inter that’s a great way to handle that you got the headphones in someone tries to bother you just put the finger up in the you point to your ear isn’t it crap like I’ve become antisocial in my old age in my like I’m going I don’t I don’t know if I’m going full Jake Scott because Jake and I are basically the same age but he has a lot of like get off my lawn stuff that I hadn’t had previously he’s an old soul oh no he is he he’s there’s a lot of stuff that there’s a long list of things that that he doesn’t like he’s he’s grumpy old man and I’ve got I’ve gotten to that point where I’ll complain about stuff and I’ll be like oh my gosh so I’m I’m coming into the program like old man Ki a little bit all right what’s grinding your gears today no just you know everything and I you post on Instagram I’m just telling you right yes there’s a lot of that there’s a lot of like I don’t know I’ve have teenagers and you’re going through the same thing where they’re just like I you can’t help but be an old man when you’re talking to your teenagers yeah and like my kid did something yesterday that I’ve done a million times as a teenager but like suddenly now as a dad I’m going you can’t do that kind of stuff you know yeah and then but he knows like I probably was doing the same thing you know so I just need to relax I need to relax more JJ that’s what I need what can we do to help you I don’t know what do you need a [Applause] donut oh some soothing tones go but see all this music does is fire me up about my f about first world problems which is definitely like uh everything triggers you I well again like I said I’m not full Jake Scott but I I’m I could get there pretty quick you know so I was looking at that the other day fire you up no I’m not fired up about I’m just saying breathe like I don’t want to have a garden I’m forced to have a garden who’s forcing you to have a garden like it’s like every year the kids like we going to plant this and then I and it ends up being something that I’ve got to do and I don’t want to do it turned into total weeds you know learned like I’ve done the tomatoes in the planter box thing and then in October I’m just throwing away tomatoes that nobody wants my kids want to get I know I eat the heck out of some Tomatoes I’m one of those again old man I have the full tomato in the hand I’m eating it like an apple in the yard really I’m that guy yeah I can put I I can slice a tomato and put on a burger I can’t just eat it straight they’re not good oh full old man on the tomatoes no is when you put it with the cottage cheese which I also do that’s true nobody nobody under 45 eats cottage cheese God dang it all right we got a full show to get through we’ve got tons of stuff to talk about uh JJ how you doing man you got the you got some retro Jazz you got a retro Jaz retro all week I had solid golden eagles ear like what into last week and now I got uh uh you knowly Carl Malone joh you’re buing out all your t-shirts that are size medium I got schmedium on today well yeah that’s exactly what you lose 40 lbs you can start wearing all your shirts good for you see and I uh I was I was I was 5 pounds away from wearing mumo to work back in March Homer Simpson in here you just go just roll me into work oh look good you look good all right I’m trying we’re gonna take a uh look here what we got the program goes as follows we start the show off by telling you that were sponsored by G2G bars all right I could use one right now I know G2G bars all natural ingredients no preservative you don’t have any in the fridge store no it’s actually probably better that way uh cuz I’d make like a G2G bar sandwich for like some I’d take three bars take some peanut butter put one in the middle and put put them on the top and bottom that’s exactly right G2G bar is perfect for anybody who needs a quick tasty nutricious boost you can find them at Costco holiday oil Maverick Associated Foods and many other places in the refrigerated section so go go give it a shot uh let’s kick off the program as we always do the passing of Jerry West uh Jerry West and absolute freaking legend in the NBA 86 years old and uh I think we just assumed he was Immortal because of how much he did across an entire career that’s where we’re going to start things off here with the cut let’s jump in right here it’s time for the biggest story of the day this is what made the cut with JJ and Alex on 975 the KSL Sports Zone this portion of the show brought to you by trun wealth uh local trusted financi Cal fiduciaries 801 8976 you can just visit their website too find out more about how to retire in style traun wealth.com uh the logo Jerry West passing away at 86 I the things that he did we were talking about this before the show I don’t know if anybody has had anywhere near the type of impact can you think of anybody who’s had a broad brush across the entire see what seems like the history of the league than Jerry West not only is he the logo of the league he was a phenomenal Hall of Fame player he was a phenomenal Hall of Fame uh you know front office guy he’s had his hands in Consulting with teams forever he’s built dynasties he’s torn them down and rebuilt them again is there anybody who’s had the type of impact on the game like Jerry West has is certainly a very unique fing fingerprint on this uh there are better players than Jerry West although not that many he’s top 50 all time right he’s on that list yep but I mean in terms of a career I can’t think of somebody with a more unique resume than a guy like Jerry West and his impact on the game nobody there’s nobody that comes close let me go through it who accomplished all these things on and off the floor uh during his playing career nine NBA Finals appearances won a championship with the Lakers won the MVP in the finals in a losing cause he was so good in that finals he won the MVP despite losing uh in that he scored 53 points in game one of the 1969 NBA Finals he earned the nickname Mr Clutch because he was so good and made some of the biggest shots uh he made uh in uh game three of the 1970 finals the Knicks had a two-point lead three seconds to go he gets an inbounds pass dribbled twice nailed a 60-foot shot to force overtime like those are the moments he’s remembered for and he’s the he’s the freaking logo he’s the logo he W he was an All-Star in all 14 years he was in the league as a player 12 all NBA teams five all defensive teams named to the NBA’s top 75 players list then he goes on to have an incredible Hall of Fame executive career he helped build the showtime Lakers think about the impact that that era had on the game of basketball and the history of sports he was the architect of that team Magic Johnson Kem Abdul Jabar five championships under Jerry West during that era then he has another Golden Era with the Lakers he made the deal to get Kobe Bryant in the 19 1996 draft think of the impact that had on the NBA think of the impact that had on the Lakers and their history and of course Kobe would go on to win five championships he signed Shaquille O’Neal he brought Shaquille O’Neal to La you think of what that impact had on NBA history mhm and then after he’s done with the Lakers oh he can do it he doesn’t have to be with the Lakers he can go do it elsewhere executive of the year with the Memphis Grizzlies he did a great job there and then he goes on and he becomes an executive with the Warriors what does he do there he advocated for selecting Klay Thompson and Draymond Green in the draft think about that dynasty my goodness and he’s not even done there like he brought Quin Le and Paul George for the LA Clippers we don’t even know what that ER is going to end like that’s in progress he was still making moves and still having an impact in the league in his 80s that’s an incredible resume there’s nobody else in NBA history that can top it I don’t think there’s anybody in sport that can match it I can’t I always think it’s because again we we tend to just bring the focus back to here you know and you know all of us listening to Hot Rod Hunley and you think about West Virginia great there are two statues in Morgantown for basketball players it’s Jerry West and hot rod Hunley yep and uh Jerry West made it to the national championship game I think a year or two after hot rod had already graduated and got on the NBA but I mean like they were W right after the other like they were briefly you know teammates right uh for a second but but these are two guys who these are two guys who were great and who were you know so accomplished in the game and you think of Mountain West or sorry uh West Virginia Mountaineers and I I I always think of I always think of Jerry West and hot rod Hunley being in that kind of same era and same kind of guys and just like that old school way of uh of of playing the game and understanding the game and um they both respected each other they had tons of differences but they were very different people you know you think about that’s okay no and but that’s what they celebrated too they they loved they were so they were so different and they they’re the way they the game was very different but you know uh I I really love what you know and again we make fun of the Lakers we make fun of the success that they’ve had and the the failures that they’ve had we find ways to to this the L suck yesterday suck again today uh you cannot deny the fact that when you see if you go and you see a Lakers game down in La at crypto Arena and you see those uh those jerseys up in the rafters there’s a reason that Jerry West is Jerry West Jersey and that name might mean more to the organization than anybody in the history of their organization uh he brought Kobe to La he brought Shaq to La he built that Showtime Dynasty like you said and on top of it he was a freaking winner as a player you know so uh it was crazy it was it was it was wild so that’s a bummer the the basketball world but again 86 years uh long long life and uh and just one of those guys who the the contributions to the game of basketball can’t be understated uh or overstated rather so I did find something NBA related that I wanted to bring up okay because uh is game when when is the uh when’s game three is it tonight has everyone checked out of the series at this point took a couple days off when we heard that uh I don’t know how bad the injury is to to Luca but I don’t know if he’s over overdoing it but so I watched a you know one of these amazing YouTuber SL instagrammers edited together every play that Luca donic was on like he was like on defense against the main ball handler or whomever it was you know and he already has a hard time that’s his biggest knock already yep for sure is playing defense but when you watched this super cut of how bad his defense was in game two in particular when we now find out right he was getting you know pain injections for you know chest contusion essentially like an inside the chest contusion like he’s in a bad spot or I don’t know how bad the spot is but the guy already plays terrible defense and you can tell that he had to save it up for offense yeah you can’t be 100% you got to save it up for offense and I was just wondering about that because he he won’t turn guys are blowing right past him the guy was like Blow by Blow by blowby uh out of position Kyrie has to push him back into the spot he’s supposed to be blowby blowby if you’re the Celtics all you do is go at that guy right now you just go right after him and I don’t know if this finals is going to be a five hopefully like a six game series but it almost feels like it could be a sweep tonight will be a great indicator if the Celtics win tonight I I don’t know what the Mavericks have left in the tank the Celtics by the way have not lost on the road in the postseason this year they have played really well on the road and if that continues Aon night I mean it’s lights out three 0 obviously never been done never no one’s ever come back from that right two other teams two other teams in the playoffs against the against the Celtics have actually split the series yeah in those first two games against against Boston and the Mavericks weren’t even I mean they were they they were closer but like the Celtics they feel at any point those first two games and like the the the Celtics let him in that game late a little bit in the fourth quarter in game two and it looked semi- respectable because it was a single digit loss and think it was what was a seven-point loss at the end of it but it felt like it was you know the disparity is even bigger um I found this list though that I thought was interesting and and when Utah’s on a list we will bring it to you okay we love lists JJ andex that’s exactly right CBS Sports ranked all NBA head coaching jobs by the desire to coach there right and or being a good coaching job maybe maybe the desire to coach there is different because what they took into account was how stable the ownership was an ownership that’s proven to spend on players uh and offc Court Personnel how stable the front office is what kind of track record they have how much job security does a coach have on a team so immediately A Team like the Lakers goes to the very bottom right and mind we talk about job security so big markets are out right where you have to be successful like immediately uh how tal how talented the roster is right now how well positioned that roster is for long-term success okay so those are that’s a lot of different uh pieces that I of that equation so let me just go over let’s let’s I’ll just play some of the because on a list like that you you you want to know when you read a list like this who’s the absolute worst and then who’s the best absolute worst on the list the Chicago Bulls agree right big market so the and in a massive amount of success in the past that you’re going to reflect everything off of in the future right so the Bulls are 30th that’s an example the Wizards are 29th because they’re awful I wanted to see where La where the LA teams are like pH the Phoenix Suns are 24 the Brooklyn Nets are 22 the Clippers are 21 uh the Lakers are 20 which I think is probably attributed a lot to the fact that you have uh the games historically probably second best player all time even though he’s old right and they’ve won championships and semi- recently right but the Jazz are basically dead middle of this list at number 16 thoughts on that JJ the Jazz and the rockets are like right next to each other 161 17 why why would the why I guess why would that NBA head coaching job and we’re just talking about the head coaching job right we’re not talking about where the franchise is no no no but part of the equation this is and and what prompted this article is the Lakers striking out on Dan Hurley yeah nobody wants to coach the Lakers right even for $15 million a year if they’re if they’re hitting up JJ reck who has no experience then something’s up like just nobody wants the no one wants LeBron drama no one wants to have to live up to the 17 titles and all that stuff we talked about Jerry West today like that’s an enormous amount of pressure to have to live up to when you’re expected to win a championship every year no matter what that sucks it really does it’s hard I and you have to be really good to want to have to deal with that what and why would you wouldn’t you rather just go to a place like Oklahoma City or or San Antonio I mean look at the Spurs they got wiim Bama and like the Spurs there’s no pressure in that town to win anymore they’ve I mean they’re they’re beyond blessed to have what they have the Denver Nuggets they’re fourth in in town as far as interest goes and may be lower than that so there’s plenty of jobs out there that don’t have as much pressure but where the Jazz are at I feel like they should be hiring this list because you because of the front office because of the assets you have an owner that gets it I think Ryan Smith gets it is willing to spend you’ve got Danny a who knows what he’s doing you had trust he’s going to build the roster you eventually need and the fact that they haven’t yet is is a little troubling but then they’ve they’ve let will know that there’s no pressure here like you’re part of this future we got sign you to a five-year contract this is going to take us some time like there’s no pressure on will right now to win I think the jazz on this list and the stockpile of picks and all the things going on and the the renovations that are going to go on down here the growth of this franchise the fact that Ryan’s going to be willing to spend when the time is right I can’t think of a negative here except patience that is required for this rebuild but that benefits the head coach but one of the factors on this I think that they were dinged wholly for you know and and this is subjective obviously you know this is just putting a list together based off of hey what’s your feeling on this front office everybody knows that Danny a and Justin zanic that’s a that’s a pretty solid front office right everybody knows well respected in the leag yes and everybody knows that you have a massive amount of of assets they know that your owner is willing to pay all those things that you describe but the part of the current roster and whether or not they could have some some success like uh in the next little bit that probably dinged him that’s the reason why like if you look the Oklahoma City Thunder number one on this list because Oklahoma City is so beautiful what yes the mountains in Oklahoma City the beach is amazing right no it’s 100% has to do with they’ve got a front office with a proven track record even if someone it’s just a little bit lucky which you have to have right um but you have a super young core that you haven’t had to pay out for totally yet right you haven’t had to you haven’t had to throw down insane amounts of money you’re gonna have to at some point but right now on the cheap you have one of the best rosters in the west you finish with the best record in the entire league so that could very well be Utah in five years right yes the Jaz should be hir on this list I think okay all right um and let me let me let me mention some teams in here that they should be higher than would you rather have the Jazz situation or the Cleveland Cavaliers now the Cleveland Cavaliers right now are a playoff team and they’ve got stars on there but they have some really big questions they have to answer do you want to be they just fired their coach right give me Donovan Mitchell they just fired their coach come on so you want to be the next guy that gets fired no no they they don’t have there’s too much drama there yeah the Golden State Warriors aging roster not winning anytime soon and they’re not going to really be invested in you because they know they’re about to go through a rebuild the Warriors have paid 600 million in luxury taxes over the past four years and now they’re goingon to have to rebuild and they’re not getting rid of any of these guys so you’re going to stink and you know who’s going to be blamed not Steph Curry you you the coach the Warriors should be 24 not 14 yeah Pelicans eh I don’t know good players but the Pacers yeah I I Pacers ahead of the Jazz I can get that Timberwolves yeah they’re in a position to win a championship right now the Memphis Grizzlies at 10 why uh I think just because you want that drama with jaw like when is he actually going to play and like what’s what what has you thinking that they’re anywhere closer to contending than the Jazz are unless jaw gets his head right but they also have a a young coach who you don’t look at Taylor Jenkins and think that that guy is gonna get fired anytime soon right because there’s this there’s this feeling of oh hey this guy he’s got a solid head on his shoulders he’s smart he’s one of the up and cominging good you know great young coaches kind of coming up in the league and the franchise I think goes and by the way when the I the franchise also has the guts to go hey uh what’s the dude’s name the Canadian former Oregon Duck everybody loves him AKA everybody hates him in the league what’s his name the guy who played for the Grizzlies and The Grizzlies said please never come back D Brooks sorry sorry sorry yes see I people are yelling at their radio because forgot his name I was hoping to for the rest of my life guy that guy yeah now a uh the Flopper hey now he’s a Houston guy because uh Jeremy likes big Jeremy loves that Jeremy has a Dylan Brooks Jersey so a an organization that’s willing to go yeah you know what having a bad guy on our team I mean he’s a pretty decent player we know he’s a good play pretty decent player unfortunately he’s also maybe the worst human in a in a league full of bad humans not full of them but you know you get what I’m saying I’d move the Jazz up four or five spots on that L I’d have them closer to 10 than 15 no no local bias from you no I I just spelled out the reasons I like it I like it and what do you want what do you want they I think what do you want as a head coach you want stability you want security and you want assets the Jazz have all three of those for their head coach it’s just going to take some time okay and they’re giving him time so stay with us 975 the KL Sports Zone your home for the best coverage of the Jazz youut and cougars is right here on the Zone this is JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Zone [Music] yeah welcome back JJ and Alex 975k Sport Zone uh next hour I’m gonna PT this thing to the to the four o’clock hour is that okay let’s qualify somebody for the it’s our final qualifier for the 124th Us open in the US Open major giveaway courtesy of youn golf that’s coming up at uh because we only have one more golfer to give away can I say who the golfer is can’t say it it’s a top 25 golfer it is top 25 golfer and I will just say well worth your while to get qualified for this one okay so there you go I’ll leave it at that where were we welcome back to the program JJ welcome back to the program uh I don’t know why but it’s second day in a row we’ve got some what is going on at the uh from the hot dog from the from the breaking news hot dog desk gosh dang it what’s the league called Major League eating Major League eating what is what is with this drama this is is there anything like this so now this is like the live tour in PGA they’re trying to work something out I could involved in this yeah I could see yeah the PFF are the Sai cele are they the ones selling the impossible meat well I’ll tell you what belongs in the garbage there’s some drama there because maybe that deal that was so solid that he had had with impossible Foods might actually not be an official offer look this is what happens when you sell your soul to the vegan devil this is your fault Joey Chestnut you did this to yourself I love this I love the vegan devil as a as a thing on our program I’m going to get in trouble for saying that I know someone on her staff that’s going to be mad at me for saying that oh I’ll be I’ll be hearing from I am an idiot jemy that person soon it’s not Jeremy we know who it is Nate’s vegan stop stop I did a 30-day vegan situation did I tell you about this why uh Ethan Miller and I when we did the Nightside project we did a 30-day because of something we had seen about I can’t remember somebody challenged us to it we were doing like our Thursday nights where we were just basically going around and eating at these ridiculous restaurants and a vegan restaurant approached us and said hey you should do the vegan Challenge and you guys should come to our restaurant the vertical Diner I think is what his name is and by the way you can do a vegan diet for 30 days which I did you will you will gain weight oh I mean I could eat french fries for a month and i’ I’d gain 40 pounds Oreos vegan Fritos vegan Fritos a loaf of bread most of the time vegan so yes and that’s what you end up doing all the pasta you could eat man as long as it’s not like a carbonara there’s a lot of unintentional vegans out there I’m telling you that just love carbs the guys the guy sitting in front of his computer playing video games the neck beard eating a sleeve of Oreos and drinking a Mountain Dew vegan sleeve of Oreos all right so Joey Chestnut aside from the fact that they’re going I think they’re going to work I guarantee they’re going to work something out for him to do the the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating thing I guarantee it but that being said Joey Chestnut is slated now to face off against coming out of retirement takido Kobayashi that’s right Kobayashi versus Joey Jaws Chestnut in a Labor Day hot dog battle uh it’s going to be on Netflix this is where we’ve this is where we’ve done it now I don’t know if this is intentional Jeremy but you put in the rundown that it was going to be not streamed on Netflix steamed no I looked at the article they put steamed they put steamed I refreshed a couple times they didn’t try to do that did they we be steamed on Netflix is that a pun we’re not missing for missing do steamed bun situ not good as the uh that Joey Chestnut was gutted to learn that he was banned from the 2024 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest he just he’s so gutted he just signed deal with Netflix so the Netflix deal I think this might be all an effort to Neo to basically promote this this would be the only time we would have ever talked about it if there was Joey Chestnut drama which there is I could see the Nathan people still allowing him to be there because there’s no other reason to watch it uh all right nominate your Youth Sports volunteer that you know in your neighborhood or in your community somebody who’s going above and beyond in their local Youth Sports community to be the Hercules hero of the week submit your nomination Kos sports.com contest listen every Thursday afternoon that’s tomorrow JJ Now read the winner and uh we’ll celebrate those efforts of the volunteers that make this the local Youth Sports Go all right and they’ll win a prize courtesy of Hercules Credit Union and of beehive meals so that’s your Hercules here of the week uh 10 members of the 1983 NC State basketball title winning team we know somebody on that team we do Big T Thor Bailey was on that team the best and the lawsuit uh is actually 10 members of that team who are accusing the NCAA over unauthorized nil use that is to say in all of their promotional stuff that they have ever used how many times have you watched the putback and Jim valano running across the court trying to find somebody to hug put the madness in March it is it is every it is multiple times a tournament and they’ve got themselves a case here that their image and their likeness is being used by the NCAA and has been for the past 40 years here’s what it says in the actual uh in the actual release by the players who are putting this out and their lawyers for more than 40 years the NCAA and its co-conspirators I love it do you think a lawyer wrote this up it’s so true the co- conspir co-conspirators have systematically and intentionally misappropriated the cardiac packs publicity rights including their names images likenesses and associated with that game the play reaping the scores of millions of dollars from the cardiac packs legendary Victory uh the suit also contends that the student athletes value the NCAA value to the NCAA does not end with their graduation now we’re talking about something pretty interesting there that’s a facet we we’ve been focusing so much JJ on the guys who are currently playing the only time we’ve gone back and looked back and said hey you might have to pay those guys are the people who during the nil era did not the most recent 2 point whatever billion dollar s what is house versus NCA do it provides the payment back payment for all the players yes that should have been compensated based on case law that was set today yeah so I nil is now a thing like you you it is yeah and look and now all these players in the past can go back and say hey wait a minute and this is what this team is doing all right how about this so let me let’s throw out some more iconic moments you ready yeah ones that you can’t go a college football season a uh a basketball season uh lner yep turn around turnaround Jay against full court against Notre Dame Court against against Notre Dame to get to the Elite 8 Bryce Drew Bryce they play that all the time okay from the football standpoint how about Doug fluty throwing the bomb against Miami right% uh that one just I’m trying to think there’s a there’s a yeah Cal Stanford should Rod Gilmore get some extra dollars because should the band get paid because they’re on the field technically dur the man is on the field the band is owed money at some point we’re getting ridiculous right but oh I’ve got to think like I’ve got to think about more instances stuff that like is just constantly on that reel that’s always playing Christian lner shot is one um Steph Curry against Wisconsin Jimmer Jimmer rising up yeah Jimmer’s in that Gordon Hayward now if commercials they pay the guys right but isn’t everything with the NCAA a commercial technically like if it was a Taco Bell commercial showing then that’s different because Taco Bell’s got to pay out for those rights and then they have to pay those guys but here’s a here’s an example so uh you’ve you’ve you’ve done I believe you’ve have in the past but I I’ve I went and cover the NCA tournament this year you go to the NCA tournament they have very exclusive TV rights like as those those of us who cover it can only show certain highlights C money-making Endeavor of the entire season by far they take all the signage that’s in an NBA arena and they cover it up yep so they take over complete control of that Arena you go to get a soda and they have a guy who’s a volunteer by the way not getting paid pouring the soda into a tiny Power Aid cup to make sure you’re not taking any product out on the court or anywhere in the in the facility that’s not that says something that they’re not getting paid for they’re that tight and they that controlling of all the revenue that goes on at these tournaments and they’re making money hand over fist from these players efforts and these coaches efforts and these schools efforts none of these people at the NCAA are doing anything like they’re they’re asking people local people that work like people in Omaha were volunteering they had people in positions as volunteers yet the executives at the NCA are making tons of money and they continue to make tons of money off of all these players and all these moments because they replay this stuff they have exclusive rights to that footage like I cannot show uh the Villanova beating UNCC at the buzzer I’m technically not allowed to use that footage in any way on TV they have the rights to it but is is uh what’s his name Chris Jenkins being paid for that no no it’s interesting I mean this is the Ed O Bannon of this is like just another further reaching kind of uh situation so the NCA is making money off of Chris Jenkin shot and Chris Jenkins isn’t making money off of shot yeah think about that for a second you okay with that crazy all right boy they got a they got an issue they got a great case they got an issue here all right we’ll come back we got more to go around the corner when we return uh we have a would you rather a Wednesday Edition would you rather we also have it’s a win ticket Wednesday so we’ll do some WN we’ll do some uh we’ll do some tickets we’ll give away some tickets uh I think Theo Von yeah the the theovon tickets the four the family four pack of tickets to the Sweet to the m to uh to the Mavericks center we’ll take a break we’ll come back we got more to go around the corner stay with us 975 V KL Sport Zone listen everybody real life hypotheticals to get your brain churning as JJ and Alex asked would you rather all right welcome back JJ and Alex 975 KL Sport Zone next hour we’re going to be hooking you up put some win ticket Wednesday tickets and we’re also going to qualify our one final golfer and it’s a good one for you to be able to get qualified for the US Open as you watch it our US Open you went to golf major giveaway all right uh would you rather JJ I saw you throw this one in there I just thre it in there we just were talking about it I was like hm okay make a buzzer beater in the NCAA tournament throw Hail Mary in a college football game now college football game like game three of the Season talking about every in every college football game is an event yeah they all matter they’re all big you’re not saying college football playoff game though look I mean n tournament I mean it’s I’m not talking about National Championship or you can do that in a national championship game in basketball or the college football playoff and football if you want to do that but yeah just NCA tournament with the big stage or just a college football game you never forget that let me get selfish real quick okay and I’m a football guy but it’s got to be the buzzer beater basketball shot right which do we worship more we worship football more for sure but which which play but that’s what I’m saying is is that it’s a singular moment typically from a singular player the Hail Mary it goes from the hand of the quarterback the camera pans down the field no Hail Mary is pretty like no no Hail Mary is not messy you know what I mean like it it there feels like there’s so much luck to it it’s kind of fun the lucky part but it’s almost like a weird equivalent of like a an onside kick they don’t happen very often when they do they’re kind of fun you’re exactly right because you always remember the participants in the football Hail Mar let me give you an example Alabama beats Auburn with a hail who through the pass uh the guy the quarterback this year milro okay who caught it I don’t remember the guy who hit the buzzer beater to beat uh we said North Carolina what we call it we called it the Doug for Villanova we buzer beater to beat North Carolina uh oh yeah what was his Chris Jenkins yeah Jenkins yeah see college basketball mentioned the Bryce Drew play like we all know you say Bryce Drew you remember that Christian lner you say Jaylen mil milro you automatically think of the hail maybe some the Hail Mary like in BYU lore that comes up obviously is is Jim McMahon but you’ll remember Kay Brown because yeah you should because it’s he made a great catch right and he was a great player when Doug fluty throws that that Hail Mary who caught it no one knows I have no idea not to this day unless you’re from there unless you’re a Boston College guy I’m going with the uhz beer too yeah if Gordon Hayward would have hit that half courtt shot to beat Duke in the in the NAT it would be it would be higher than Christian Leon it’ be higher than Chris Jenkins it’d be higher than Bryce Drew he would have been taken third in the draft a halfcourt shot to win a National Championship what you couldn’t top that been crazy all right and radio Cai love itow this is what you got you’re listening to JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars don’t touch that D on 975 the kosl sports so [Music] welcome back it is JJ and Alex 975 the KSL Sport Zone thanks for being with us today everybody uh the passing of Jerry West means we get to watch a lot of really cool highlights and we were just talking about how one Jerry Weston company did not get the three-point line that the guys get these days no and the incentive to shoot from outside was not there and yet Jerry West shot from Deep like he was shooting not it wasn’t even mid-range stuff either he took what the defense gave him so and did it with confidence phenomenal and they shot on Carnival rims they were wound tight they were not Breakaway they were I mean it was just a to watch this era and watch these guys play back then was crazy the skill level has improved you know beyond any kind of comparison now but at the same time like guys like Jerry West did did something with not very much when it came to what the guys have uh these days in the NBA so there you go welcome to the program by the way JJ welcome good to be here good to see uh here’s what we’ve got our program is brought to you by G2G bars all natural ingredients and no preservatives make the G2G bar perfect for anybody who needs a quick tasty hour it’s time for the biggest story of the day this is what made the cut with JJ and Alex a 975 the KSL Sports Zone this portion of the show also brought to you by an incredible selection of Kia Subaru Chevy Jeep Dodge or Ram visit Doug Smith dealerships in American Fork and Spanish Fork great service starts with KN how nobody knows like Doug Ty hildbrand joining us co-host the solid verbal podcast Ty thanks for being with us man gentlemen thank you for having me how are you fantastic great college football’s almost here yes everything is a way too early list at this point but we’re getting closer now where the lists actually start to look not as too early you know all these things about all these preseason power polls that we’re voting in and all of these uh back and forths about I mean we were reading off the the Phil steel uh preseason fourth team uh yesterday on our program for the Big 12 I mean that’s where we’re at right now that’s how excited we get about college football so let’s talk a little bit about this big 12 what do you think about the new entrance into the conference and their addition uh in terms of talent and what these teams are going to bring to a new Big 12 well and I’m not just saying this because I’m on a Utah show I love Utah I’m really into Utah this year perhaps we can talk a little bit about that but I find it is rather unprecedented at least in my life time of watching college football in my span of covering college football that we’ve essentially got a situation where the top two teams in any one conference hit the transfer portal Texas and Oklahoma no longer in the Big 12 and now as a result we’ve got this mish mash of teams that I feel are all competing to try and become that Alpha and I don’t know outside of Utah who I like the most maybe Kansas State but we’ve just got this interesting scenario where you know of course Arizona had a great Renaissance over the last two seasons but they’ve got a new coach we’ve obviously got other new teams joining the conference Colorado always supremely interesting for a multitude of reasons that we don’t have to go into and obviously the teams that are still there the Kansas’s of the world the Oklahoma States and Iowa States and UCF and West Virginia’s in Texas there’s just this whole conglomerate of teams now that I frankly don’t know what to expect and I think it makes the Big 12 the most interesting conference in college football maybe not the best conference but if nothing more certainly the most interesting the brand is not new but it does feel like a completely new conference and you’re right who’s going to be the bully who’s going to be the alpha who’s going to take the place of a texer in Oklahoma you think it’s Utah why do you think Utah is the alpha what is it about this program in this team that makes you think you’re one they’re the team to beat so you know how the talking point is been there in the Big 10 about four West Coast teams joining like will they be able to adjust to the Big 10 or will the Big 10 be able to adjust to them in terms of the Big 10 I kind of roll my eyes at both sides of that question but in the Big 12 I do think it’s a very real thing with Utah because as you guys know the identity of this team under Kyle woodingham is very different from pretty much everyone else in the conference maybe outside of Iowa State or you know you could you could squint and find comparisons with kstate but I don’t know if either of those teams are quite as talented with what Utah’s got coming back there are just a lot of teams in the Big 12 that I don’t think are equipped to handle Kyle whittingham’s brand of football which is super physical built to kick your teeth in wear you down I’m just really high on Utah going into a setup like that I think they might already be the best team in the conference it’s an incredible stroke of Good Fortune for them of course with all the musical chairs and college football that they find themselves in a situation like this that I think is advantageous the schedule sets up well they don’t play Kansas or Kansas state which is helpful to say the least so there’s just a lot I think working in their favor as they enter this new conference and whereas other schools coming into a new program or a new conference excuse me might find themselves hitting a bit of a speed bump like Oklahoma just as an example going into the SEC I don’t think we’re going to have that with Utah I think they’re going to hit the ground running cam Rising is a guy that we’ve been able to watch Pretty closely here of course and uh cover him in Rose Bowls and uh two pack 12 championships but last year of course didn’t play it down and neither did a guy like brt keithy so when guys take a year off and then come back but then we have all these expectations for them is that fair I think it’s fair um I don’t know if they’re going to achieve previous levels of productivity but I think based on what we have as Baseline for information stats and things of that nature it’s entirely Fair uh we talked about it on our show a couple episodes ago if you go back to 21 and 22 the back-to-back 10- win seasons for Utah overwhelmingly those statistics confirm the excitement I I hope I just described because those two offenses Were Far and Away better than what we saw last year right I don’t know if that’s a relative point a relevant point for people listening but it is for me things like all the nerd all the nerd stats right success rates efficiency metrics things like that for this Iowa offense were in the lower half of college football they didn’t generate any big plays they went three and out about a third of the time they struggled a lot in the Red Zone this was with without Cam Rising this was also as you mentioned without Brant keithy the optimal version of this Utah offense has consisted of having a playmaking tight end they lean on their tight ends in crunch time I think the tight ends I saw the stat that a tight ends led the team in touchdown receptions for the last five years or something like that so it’s it’s a big deal if you’re missing both that quarterback and the guy that the offense is kind of built around so getting those key pieces back um look I like I said I don’t know if they get back to where they were but I would have to assume it’s certainly going to be better than what we saw a year ago what are the realistic goals for the youths I mean is would it be disappointing to you know obviously people be here be disappointed but people that follow it on the outside would it seem like a disappointment if they don’t win the conference and get to the playoff well they’re over under nine and a half and I feel pretty strongly that they’re going to hit that um I think simply by virtue of their schedule by virtue of the schedule they they have as good a chance of getting to that conference Championship game as anybody and if you look at the latest odds from I think I looked at draft Kings Utah is the favorite to win the conference so I think in terms of what constitutes a disappointment versus what does not I would be very disappointed if this team didn’t win 10 games if they did not hit that over um if if only because the conference itself I is so much up for grabs and it feels like there is this huge void and a lot of unknowns I probably wouldn’t go as far as to say you know if they don’t win the conference that’s a disappoint if they don’t make the playoff that’s a disappointment because Utah has its own fair share of unknowns with guys coming back from injury you know who knows with joining a new conference if there’s something unknown that I have not mentioned here I’m I’ve been wrong many times before but I would say 10 wins is The Benchmark that I’m looking most at so let’s shift gears a little bit here because another team that we uh cover extensively here in the area is is BYU and they had their first year of the Big 12 last year and the experience was a massive kicking the teeth now part of it was because yeah you know you’re making that transition and you’re losing a an NFL caliber quarterback in fact your last two quarterbacks got drafted and then you know uh Keen slovis was a big question mark and ended up ended up being an even bigger question mark at you know by the middle of the season and you know they made some changes in the offseason and they got rid of their offensive line coach uh changed over uh a couple things when it came to how this offense is going to run because it was abysmal last year what do you think the cougar are to be expected to to deliver in year two of the Big 12 well I think they’ll be better what that means is unclear to me okay there were moments last season especially the beginning part of the Year where there there were some real issues with that team in terms of odds the odds I just referenced again I think from DraftKings if I looked at this correctly there’s a reason that BYU’s like 120 to1 to win the Big 12 Conference and a there are a lot of questions with this team even though I think they’ll be better I think there are still a fair amount of unknowns that we can’t really put our finger on we won’t be able to put our figure on until we get you know a good chunk of the way through September the other thing I would add in contrast to what I just described with Utah in their schedule BYU plays all the tough teams in the Big 12 they’ve got Kansas they’ve got Kansas State they’ve obviously got the holy war against Utah they’ve got Arizona and Oklahoma State at home in back to back weeks in Provo there’s a lot of ammo on this schedule that I think there aren’t a lot of breaks for BYU so I hope some of the changes they’ve made in the off season will be enough to propel them into what figures to be a really tough schedule in 2024 and and look a little bit more productive in doing so but I’ll wait to reserve judgment just based on the odds right now and by virtue with the schedule not having done the full Deep dive that you need to do to preview BYU and other teams in the Big 12 um I I think Improvement but to what end at this point to me is kind of an unknown I absolutely agree with you I think Bo is going to be better this year but that schedule is brutal it is is it might be the toughest schedule in the Big 12 because they you’re right they get everybody that’s tough and and I’ll throw the trip to Orlando to play UCF in October as well but uh my question is as you mentioned the schedule are you more concerned about the schedule or the uncertain the quarterback room well the quarterback room the quarterback room I can I say both is that a cop out no no we’re we’re both concerned we we are we are saying the same things yeah because like it’s it one kind of plays off the other right if you don’t have a quarterback or a quarterback uh at least consistent quarterback play and you go up against a schedule like that which it look is about as as you said as big a Murderers Row as you’re going to find in the Big 12 it it that is not going to make your quarterback play better that is going to unfortunately magnify what it does poorly and so to that end yes I’m concerned about the quarterback room and and obviously the schedule as we just described it it figures to be at least at this point as we’re talking in mid June five teams ranked in the top 25 you mentioned UCF which maybe is like a break of a game but that’s on the road in Orlando after both Arizona and Oklahoma and oh by the way it’s the game before not the week before but the game before the holy war so there’s just like there’s like a lot of getaway potential on this schedule and if you don’t have your quarterback room firing on all cylinders that’s a bit of a problem so um yes I at the risk of punting on your on your very specific question I I think my answer at this stage is probably both well certainly uh you know anytime there’s a quarterback controversy and uh none of the options feel like they’re great at least at this point and from what we saw last year and then on top of you know uh what we’re hearing from you know the school which is limited you know obviously they don’t want to give away uh the entirety of what their plan is and when they’re going to they’re going to end up naming a starter I mean it’s just is it’s a bad place to be in because they were so used to having good quarterbacks over the past few seasons and then last year just really really got BYU in the gut you know when it came down to it so uh overall though the college football playoff at a 12 team new world that we’re going into couldn’t be better in our per our view any more playoff games is is more fun for us but is it just going to turn into a massive SEC and Big 10 fest going forward I think if you left it up to the Big 10 and SEC it would I think I think they’re already trying to assert their dominance in a sense and uh that probably had some part in expanding it to 14 teams starting in 2026 but as for this kind of initial stage of things right you know the assumption is that yes those are the two uh most powerful conferences we’re going to see an influx of those teams in it but um you know I’d be stunned if we got fewer than three teams from either of those two conferences I think from a big 12 standpoint I’d be shocked if there weren’t at least two teams um it seems to me like both the ACC and and Big 12 are competing to get you know two or three teams in there so um at least to start I think it’ll be fairly evenly distributed um however the deeper we get into this playoff era I do fear a little bit that we will see the likes of Tony petiti Greg sanki trying to you know assert assert their assert their will a little bit more and get more of their own teams in it so um all that being said if you are a Utah fan and if you are listening to this I think Utah is one of those teams that benefits greatly from an expanded playoff field from a new conference um you know if I’m counting off the teams that I think stand to gain the most from this new era of college football I look at teams like Penn State I look at teams like Tennessee and certainly I look at teams like Utah I mean I think it’s right there for them if they can get assembled properly media day seasons coming soon we’re a month away from Big 12 media day so I got to ask you before we uh cut you loose if you had to pick a top three were a top five in the Big 12 who would those teams be well well you know where I stand on Utah so I think um I think I’m pretty you on I’m pretty uh pretty much mored to the youths at this point but I Utah is probably my my Alpha I I think K State is the obvious team right behind Utah just because they’re super well coached where it gets interesting though is that third team um I think Oklahoma State’s got a lot coming back I I like the pieces that okahoma state has coming back but that being said I also like Kansas so I’d probably go one of those two teams I I would say an edge to Kansas if only because I like their offense better at this stage I still don’t really know what to expect from Oklahoma State on offense this coming season um so for me I’ll go chalk I’ll say Utah K State and Kansas with a close fourth for Oklahoma State there you go Ty hilden brand he hosts uh the Sol of verbal it’s a college football podcast he and Dan Rubenstein if you have not uh already assign those as the uh what you need to have on your Apple podcast or whatever podcast platform you use go check it out Ty we appreciate the time man we’ll chat with you again as the season gets closer anytime guys thanks for the invite thanks T all right so does he like Utah I was trying to figure out where he was where he landed on tell youth fans should be extremely excited look it’s not again it’s not just us coming on here like we’re we’re having all these National guest we’re going to get accused they’re not blowing smoke man you know we’re going to get accused look next year we’re having a different conversation but this year this is where it’s at Utah is built for something special they got to go execute it but they’re built for it hey Jeremy let’s book Dave mccan soon just so we can uh get some balance back on this show see what see where see how he can uh pitch BYU’s finishing top three in the Big 12 we’ll just see no we do have to get Dan we do have to I do need to hear Dave mcc’s Big 12 media poll oh yeah where’s he gonna put the Utes Dave smart though I mean he’ll he he calls it like it is I can’t wait to find out where he’s gonna put the Utes in his in his big 12 pole well not fifth he’s not gonna go full Matt bimonte is he not you never go full that by Monte I think the best quote I ever heard from you this week Don’t Go full Provo when talking about socks and sandals no you never go full Provo how dare you ever it’s myma moer don’t talk like that we were just talking about socks and sandals calm down come on don’t do it all right you just don’t do it it’s like don’t eat don’t do socks and sandals yeah don’t eat vegan hot dogs that’s my wisdom I’m giving to you all today two know this week if you if you listen to anything today just get that out of remember those two things all right uh Jensen and now real golf radio’s Brian Taylor all right welcome back everybody JJ and Alex 975sl Sport Zone uh man it’s hot here in Utah we’re having a little bit of a mini Heat Wave won’t be for long though close to the close to the triple digit marks you know where else it’s going to be nice and hot is in Pinehurst North Carolina and that’s going to affect the speed of these greens which are already uh just very much along the lines of the US Open and greens it’s very difficult and these are even tougher Brian Taylor BT joining us real golf radio of course right here on the airwaves 8 to10 every Saturday morning BT thanks for being with us man is it hot there and are the greens going to slow down at all it is hot and it’s not even hot yet uh and it’s hot so and it’s going to get real hot by the time Friday gets here but yeah it’s 85 today 46% humidity and it said 85 feels like 86 and I’m like really because it feels a lot hotter than that but supposed to be 92 and closer to the you know 70% humidity Mark it’s going to be the one of those kind of things this weekend so um I will tell you before we get into the greens that uh I am standing on the balcony of the brand new just opened World Golf Hall of Fame that is just across the parking lot from the clubhouse at Pioneers number two and uh the usgaa uh has their uh second golf house or their head second headquarters just adjacent to this new Hall of Fame here uh in the Pinehurst you know again right across the street from Pinehurst number two Clubhouse and so um pretty cool to see you we’re just standing in the in there with uh with Bob Casper and looking at his dad’s Locker that row says uh golf superpowers and it’s it’s Arnold Palmer Jack Nicholas Gary Player Billy Casper Lee trino and and the list goes on but uh pretty neat stuff to to see Billy’s uh Locker there and his his presentation and his name included with h with all the greats and um to be able to just see the presentation super cool I I can’t say enough if you’re a golf fan you got to get to Pinehurst you know play number two play some of the other great golf courses in the area come check out the new World Golf Hall say it it’s awesome but uh the the nice thing is is when you come to play The Greens won’t be nearly as challenging as what they’re going to be for these players over the next few days John Bowen Hammer former boou golfer by the way who’s now the chief championships officer for the USGA he’s in charge of the setup and he told us today that he’s expecting that the greens will run you know for most of the day around a 13 on the stent meter so normally at your Club you’re probably putting something around a 10 to 11 uh which means number of feet you know kind of in speed and so these are two to three feet faster than what you would be normally putting their uh back home on your course and they’re just just uh and of course they’re super sloped upside down cereal bowls so it’s going to be it’s going to be something to watch for sure it’s going to be tough I got to go back to the Hall of Fame thing you you mentioned those incredible things there in what was there one thing that just blew you away like oh that’s so cool I got to tell everybody I saw this you know one of the things that I was just talking to another guy is all of the old wooden clubs I man those wooden they when they were Woods not metal woods but actual Woods drivers three Woods five Woods yeah uh these things were works of artart they’re so beautiful you know they’re this really beautiful wood with a lacquer on them and I’m just looking at those and right next to them inevitably there’s some like alligator print or alligator skin shoes with the nails on the bottom you know just the nail spikes not the soft spikes like today like it was just a generation it’s that’s the kind of stuff I just absolutely love um and uh you know we were talking about some of these old irons Johnny Miller we’re standing in front of his locker and he’s got his irons that he won uh one of his one of his Majors with or one of the events I can’t remember exactly which one and we’re just talking about all this lead tape on the back and there just you know it’s a it’s a it was a game when you know and I grew up with these old Wilson Staff blades and you knew if you missed it and in Idaho growing up golf season in the spring if you missed it man it hurt your hands like H the hting it off the handle of a metal baseball bat you’d sting a little bit and uh today you know most of the players don’t grow up playing that kind of stuff and um which I’m grateful for I think the growth of the game has been improved dramatically by the advancement and Equipment because that stuff was hard it’s already hard but that was real hard to hit um we were watching too they just had a you know they were they were showing a bunch of b-roll of of Scotty sheffler and uh Tiger Woods kind of getting their practice rounds in and and you know I was thinking because they were showing tiger and it’s GNA be his first US Open since 2020 and so it’s always good to have tiger in the field when it comes to the promotional side of things but obviously a guy like Scotty sheffler who’s won five out of 13 events that he’s played in this year $24 million already this year it’s a record purse for the US Open Over $4 million for the winter things have just speaking of coming a long way it’s not just the irons it’s it’s like we’re in an era now where Tiger Woods has looked at and we’re like wow what a what a Regal old golfer Tiger Woods is now it’s like crazy to see right like the the new era of golf is is here and and these young players are are no joke man that there’s no question I mean Billy Casper won the 1959 US Open and uh took home a Winner’s check of $122,000 not bad so um you know considering that if you just for showing up this week they’re going to give you $10,000 and um which is kind of a cool thing John Bowen Hammer said look we feel like making the cut is qualifying for the the championship and so we’re g to you know throw $10,000 in 4.3 million to the winner this week and you know it’s interesting in an era where we’ve talked so much about money in men’s professional golf over the last couple of years and you just alluded Scotty winning those 24 million already this season you know wins again that will put him up in that 26 27 million Mark and a lot of these guys were saying hey we’re going to go over to live golf because of the money and yet you know a lot of this is a result of that let’s not let’s not uh kid ourselves you know that everybody has stepped up um but the game of golf has become so popular outside of the the the you know squabble between Liv and the PGA Tour you know since Co the game of golf is just skyrocketed in popularity and I think that’s trickling down everywhere right Club manufacturers golf courses you know Country Club memberships are full with weight lists you know tea times are booked at every uh municipal golf course you know s product is being sold lessons are being taken you know all that kind of stuff so golf’s in in a really good healthy spot and um and the same thing with men’s professional golf I mean you look at that kind of money and John ROM was was here and he was uh in his interview and he kept getting asked about Scotty sheffler and actually somebody asked him Point Blank hey before you left for Liv last year it was you and Scotty uh battling it out for world number one you know how how do you kind of feel about that and he you could tell I mean from the his response at the PGA his response at the Masters this year ROM’s really feeling a little you know little I think maybe having a little buyers remorse on that whole deal because he’s kind of been left out kind of being forgotten a little bit uh right in the height of his uh window of when he was playing you know some tremendous golf so um Scotty Sheffer is is is showing that if you go out there and you win and you play great there’s plenty of money and and that’s what tiger always said he never worried about the money was never talked about the money didn’t care what his earn his uh career earnings were he just said winning takes care of everything and that includes money so yeah it’s kind of an interesting thing to to see that um you know uh and to see tiger where he’s at now and he seems to be having as much fun with Charlie there you know well helping him out as kind of his swing coach and you know that kind of thing as as he is uh but we’ll see I mean he always maintains he’s competitive but we’ll see how he does this week can you give us some historical perspective on how good Scotty sheffler is playing right now I mean the thing that stood out to me was that you know he’s the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to win five times prior to the US Open if I’m getting that stat right I mean anytime you’re going back that far yeah it’s unreal I mean you’re skipping over Jack you’re skipping over tiger you’re skipping over Greg Norman skipping over Nick price you know uh and the list goes on and on I mean there’s just so many tremendous players that have played this game since 1962 and to think that Scotty shelford is doing something that hasn’t been done since that point in time those are you know we used to talk you guys remember this when we were we first started this show back in 99 it was we even had a segment called Woods watch you know and uh it was this uh called keeping an eye on tiger it seemed like every week hey Tiger’s doing this that hasn’t been done since that or that’s never been done as breaking this record or that record and and then it kind of went away there wasn’t we you know it was almost like the PGA tour would try to rec recreate tiger in the aggregate you know you’re hoping for a Rory maroy a Jordan spe or somebody like that or a group of them to all kind of come together and fill that void of a superstar and here quietly Scotty Sheffer has stepped up and is doing those kinds of things so uh I I would just say he’s doing some special stuff right now and I I think if it weren’t for his caddy going to his um daughter’s graduation on Saturday the PGA Championship he might still be you know undefeated outside of Houston in in this stretch and uh so we’ll see I mean I it’s hard to not pick Scotty as the guy this week and yet you know that anything can happen it’s golf it’s it’s very rare that a front runner just goes out and wins it all um but he seems to be doing all the right things right now that makes it hard to make a case against him BT we appreciate it man as always we’re going to be able to talk to you on Friday when uh when of course this thing’s going to be underway and we’ll be uh pretty pretty far into round two and we’ll be we’ll we’ll almost be close enough to knowing where that cut line is and and we’ll be making some assumptions based off of that so we’re looking forward to it thanks as always for you and Bob and all you guys do and during the week during these awesome uh uint golf major giveaways for us there’re so much fun and uh it’s awesome to have the the connection with you guys to be able to give us that Insight it’s my pleasure and we appreciate the air time and the chance to be on with you guys and just really quick for Tony fena fans I tweeted this out you know I would say in his n this is his ninth Us open in the eight previous the most closely Golf Course the most closely resembles Piner would probably be shinok that he’s played not saying they’re the same but they’re kind of similar he finished fifth and that’s his best finish at the US Open so um let’s hope Tony has a good week this week there you go Brian Taylor real golf radio every week right here we’ll talk to you again Brian all right see you boys there you go BT man great info what a great experience and I wanted to ask about the Hall of Fame because that’s that’s one of the benefits of going to Pinehurst right you get to take all that in too yeah it’s uh it’s it’s cool what did he say the guy’s job title was who was kind of showing him around and showing them all the the chief Championship officer that’s quite a job how do you get that what did he major in championships how do you get that job former BYU golfer too man I I don’t think there is anything uh name wise that you could compete with what’d you go I got my NBA oh cool so what do you uh what’s your job title for the uh for the USGA just Chief Championship officer CCO okay cool all right uh let me see here you told me to say something uh Jeremy what was it oh I got you yeah get the official debit cards of the Utah Jazz University of Utah Sports Real Salt Lake and more exclusively at American First Credit Union that’s America First Credit Union we’ll take a break we’ll come back the Utah NHL team expected to make a splash in free agency Everybody is watching what’s going on in Utah and you know what’s changed for this franchise an owner who is ready to pay and it is absolutely frightening to some of these other clubs out there who are watching in the offseason because Ryan Smith they have draft Capital they have cap space and they are willing to spend and there are some free agency there are some free agents out there that the rest of the NHL is going to be a little bit nervous about I think when it comes to it so we’ll talk talk about that next stay with us 975 the KSL Sports Zone you’re locked in JJ and Alex with the insight and analysis on the teams you can’t live without presented by G2G bars this is 975 the KSL Sports Zone [Music] welcome back everybody JJ and Alex 975d KL Sport Zone thanks for being with us on the program everybody cyclist where reflective gear drivers give cyclist at least three three feet of space meet in the middle so your paths don’t and message from the Utah Department of Public Safety there you go uh so we were we we were looking at this article before the show today and this is a great time to bring it up because as we’re getting into not just the offseason of of uh of NHL as the NHL final the NHL Stanley Cup Final of course uh still got a handful of games left hopefully boy I hope because you might have a Celtics situation like you’re having with the Panthers if Edmonton doesn’t figure it out at home gotta get it done now it’s gonna get it’s gonna get nasty Ste or die we’ll see though and I’m excited because it’s also an education for us here and as the salary cap has now increased from 85 to 88 million or 83 million to 88 million now in the NHL I know that’s not the heights of uh of the NBA or the NFL but that’s a significant jump for the folks in the in the NHL it was actually a surprise for them they didn’t know it was going to be that high and so it’s a good deal for them uh because the players are going to get paid more money Ryan Smith and the ownership of the NHL team coming to Utah are ready to spend money something that this franchise has been in desperate need of JJ yeah the Arizona franchise did not do that bill Armstrong did not have the ability to use the cap space that he had in the way that he would have liked now he does so it’s going to be very interesting to watch what he does with it and there’s some interesting names out there in free agency Reinhardt with the Panthers is the one we’re watching right now we’ve been told that’s a guy that uh the Panthers may not be able to keep well why not because there’s teams like Utah and not many other teams like Utah that have the money to pay him big money in free agency uh and this is our good friend Greg wasinski um from espn.com that wrote all this and he had some Intel and he found out and it says here that many inside the NHL expect Utah to be an X Factor of the offseason there are areas where they expect the team will be active in free agency or in the trade market it could use some Talent upgrades in its defensive core and could use a veteran Center but is a franchise looking to be competitive quickly in a new market many are wondering how aggressive it will get with the cap space and all that draft Capital they like they’re kind of like the Jazz they have a lot of draft picks stored up that they could use to go get that thing and one agent said quote don’t estimate underestimate the power of intrigue you’re going to have guys that simply want to change that are going to be attracted to Utah for the team and the geography it happened in Seattle and I think it could happen there too interesting uh there is a long list of really really good um free agents that are available couple of them like you said I think you mentioned already Reinhardt but also Brandon Montour who also uh plays for the Panthers he’s a defenseman he’s one of these guys that is uh one of the best free agents in the off season now here’s the thing is both he and Reinhardt kind of found a a home there in Florida because they’ve been at other franchises that have not been successful in the past so you find a place that’s going to be a possible winner into the future that might be enough for you to be able to stay but if you’re making three and a half million this year like Brandon Montour is and the possibility in free agencies to maybe make four and a half five five and a half we all would love a raise right and now you know how it is too and get a play for these rabbit fans you know how it is too you know how it is yeah when there’s a championship that gets won by a franchise and you just watch that thing get disassembled because the payday does come for a lot of these players after they win that Championship so you win a Stanley Cup down in Florida man I’m rooting for the Panthers more than I ever had yeah because you’re like hey awesome you guys w a you guys won the Stanley Cup now blow that thing up we’ll pick up the pieces for you all right so it’s just it’s good news it’s good news to know that there is a some really cool stuff’s gonna happen yeah it’s a it’s a really really cool thing man we’re excited about it and and the fact that people are a little bit nervous about what Utah is going to do because they have the ability now to do so much in the offseason really cool on your exclusive home of Utah Jazz basketball 975 the KSL Sports [Music] Z basketball give me because basketb welcome back it’s JJ and Alex it’s 975 KSL Sport Zone we appreciate you being part of the program today if you missed any portion of the show you can always go back and uh get the podcast edition of the shows man these golfers are all sweaty on TV JJ they were just showing b-roll of it’s hot out there tiger he’s got kind of the sweat line I do just right under the old got kind of the kind of the chest sweat going on Phil Mickelson got some facial hair going on there I don’t know what he’s doing looks like Grandpa he’s trying to look like not he’s like like he’s like he’s wearing a disguise so people don’t know it’s Phil Mickelson it’s like no no no don’t bother him he’s going to swing everything right-handed this week so nobody knows who he is joining us on the program right now Jake Scott Jake and Ben Fame and of course uh he covers the NBA as well as anybody in this market and knows the game as well as anybody in this market despite uh maybe being a little self-deprecating about it sometimes he’s darn good at it Jake Scott joining us on the program what’s up Jake guys have you ever played golf in North Carolina or the southeast of course not uh I was in Hilton Head a week and a half ago playing golf and it’s no bueno for uh for my armpits it’s not a it’s a it’s a it’s a bad situation uh it is it is like playing in one of those steam rooms uh and you know the the sweating is a funny byproduct but also being at sea level and and hitting through that soup it’s like take take like 30 yards no it’s it’s the worst because I’m out there and I’m like I’m like oh look at this look at this approach and I’m I’m like wait a minute 210 yard Drive what’s going on here like it’s it’s like it’s it’s a bad deal it’s real too they’re like oh it’ll take 15 to 20% off of your uh off your game but yeah it’s a pine her and by the way and and I know that you’re kind of like this like I am like making a course unnecessarily difficult just for the sake of going like yeah we’re the hardest of all the majors is not that attractive to me I don’t love to see like he’s even par he wins the championship no I don’t either I that’s that’s always been my hot take is I I don’t particularly like the US Open if I if I wanted to see Boos make Bogies you know i’ I’d roll out to any number places just 10 minutes away yeah you know what I mean so I yeah whatever but but people seem to like it I mean but the setups are the setups are crazy for sure yeah I had a lot more fun watching the PJ Championship the high scores the crazy crowd that’s that’s more my type of golf but uh speaking of crowds Dallas has a home crowd tonight game through the NBA finals tonight do they have a chance oh sure they have a they have a chance um I Heard Chris tap’s out right I mean that will make a difference he’s he’s really good of course um but but I guys I I think Boston’s the better team i’ I’ve talked to you about Dallas before I’m not real high on Dallas uh but but what do I know you know we talked to lock on our show lock is super I know you guys do too is super high on Dallas so you know Lock’s a really smart guy but I I it comes down to me I think Boston’s the better team you know maybe this is one of those you know the what do they call cliche they win game three at home and then the gentleman sweep yeah um but you know Boston hasn’t lost again the whole playoffs on the road which is kind of crazy so um I I just think Boston’s the better team and I love the way the Celtics are playing against Dallas I I didn’t know if Joe Missoula was a was a good coach and maybe we still don’t but I I love his game game plan against Dallas I think it’s been really good specifically uh on defense and I like the way that Boston plays as a as a team and Dallas doesn’t really do that so I don’t I don’t exactly we can talk about adjustments the Mavericks can make um because maybe I think there are a couple out there and Jason kid has has shown an ability to make adjustments but you know I I think I think Boston wins the series um I I’m going to say and fives so maybe Dallas maybe the one they get us tonight maybe not uh Chris Chris STS being out is is nice because it might maybe it does make for a little bit better of of a series like you were saying I mean this is uh we were watching though I was telling JJ I watched this guy who put together a super cut of all the bad defense that uh Luca was playing in game two and I know he was he’s doing dealing with this uh thoracic contusion but uh he already doesn’t play very good defense defense and so throw a little bit of a of an uncomfortable situation in there and and if I’m the Celtics I’m just going straight at the straight at the Maverick Superstar when when we’re on offense absolutely I don’t I don’t know why any team ever who plays Dallas doesn’t do that you know and and Minnesota I keep I’m on this kick talking with Ben that Minnesota beat themselves and didn’t like I’m not g Dallas credit for for beating Minnesota because Minnesota had the worst game plan you know what I mean like notice this injury as a story again for Luca donic it was a story in the Oklahoma City series too because they were going right at him we didn’t hear about this injury at all in the Minnesota series and and my theory would be you know the injury probably didn’t change but you didn’t really notice because Minnesota didn’t go at him like that it was weird but but Boston’s going to do it uh Kyrie has been playing above his weight defensively in the playoffs I give him credit but he’s still only 61 and Boston’s really big across the board and can make you pay in a number of different ways so um yeah I don’t know why why Minnesota didn’t have a better game plan but Boston Boston’s got a great one if Boston wins this series four games to one they’d end up going 16 and three in the postseason and that’s a really incredible run uh are we giving the Celtics enough credit for what they’ve accomplished here this is a team that’s been knocking on the door for several years and and been close and they finally break through here but they’re having a really nice stretch here with this group and obviously the additions in the offseason have put them over the top but just how good is the Celtics team and are we not giving them enough credit for what they’ve accomplished this year uh yes we’re not um is is the short of it if but to to expand on it Ben has this Theory and maybe I’m tumming around to it a little bit that um that teams in the NBA because of the new CBA are going to be good not great um and maybe yeah it’s kind of how it’s designed you know it’s going to punish these these repeater luxury tax uh teams even more punitively I mean it’s going to be you know not only serious though but all of a sudden the rules get super tight on on who exactly you can sign and for how much and even how much like you can you can fix it with trades I mean it’s really it’s it’s really restrictive and it’s designed to you know prevent the the Warriors essentially and you know it it will mean that our Champions will not necessarily be great teams they’ll be good teams having great seasons and I think it’s an interesting interesting Theory but I think Boston maybe if if you buy into that I think Boston may be the last of the great teams um because I think Boston was the only great team in the league this year um and they I mean they were like you can look into all the the normal statistics like differential and all that sort of stuff and we can lay out you know how many games EX exactly that they won and and the way that they did it and they they’ve just been flat dominant now I don’t know if I’m going to put them in the ethos of the greatest teams of all time necessarily their run through the Eastern Conference has been uh nothing I mean zero right the Eastern Conference playoffs this year I think that might have more to do with our perception of them than what they’re actually doing on the court is their their competition but and and absolutely J 100% JJ but they I mean they’ve creamed everybody I mean they’ve done even if they’re in a weak conference you know some of those Easter conferences in the 90s weren’t weren’t all that terrific but the Bulls treated them like it right you know that that sort of thing and and Boston has has certainly done that they haven’t really faltered like the two games that they’ve lost in the playoffs were because they absolutely didn’t get on the bus you know like if we if we talked about that was always the knock on them throughout the playoffs is like can they stay focused and it’s like God you realize they’ve only lost two games and those games were both because they just briefly lost Focus you know so I I think Boston’s great I I love how deep they are I love their top two guys I love the way they play and listen I don’t like the Celtics I I never have I don’t particularly like Brad Stevens uh but you you gota you gotta T tip your cap they’ve been open to shut the best team in the league by a long way and they’ve only lost two games in the playoffs and they’re they’re going to beat you know the West was weird this year maybe the Dallas got through but they’re going to they’re going to Beat the Champ of the West so I I think they are a great team Jake Scott joining us here uh Jake and Ben of course every day T to noon on this very station uh Jerry West passing away today 86 years old and that was uh that was not great news to hear today but he was 86 years old what’s his contribution been to the game it’s at the very least aside from being one of the best players of all time uh he’s also been one of the better uh you know front office guys of all time in the league being able you know with that with that Lakers group so where’s he gonna be where is he gonna be kind of historically I don’t know if anybody’s ever had that type of a fingerprint on the game okay well well I will say this um he’s he wasn’t just one of the better GMS not to disagree with you on your own uh show but he was the best I mean and and here’s how I will answer you he has the best basketball resume of all time and it’s really not even close and he was an okay Coach when he did that briefly but yeah with three seasons yeah yeah he’s the best GM of all time he did it forever he did it at different franchises uh he was a a Hall of Fame player made the All-Star team every every uh year 10 all first team all NBA teams by the way in his career so he’s got the best basketball resume of all time but I I said this on my show so for our p1s out there I’m sorry I’m repeating myself but like you know I I’ve said this about Charles Barkley Charles Barkley was a great player but he’s an uh even better broadcaster like he’s a way better broadcaster than he was a player and he’s a he was a obviously Hall of Fame unbelievable player Jerry West was a Hall of Fame unbelievable player but he was the greatest GM he should be remembered for his front office work but as far as the whole shebang I don’t think you can make an argument he’s got the best B basketball GM resume in history or basketball resume in history agree 100% there’s nobody that’s even close I don’t even know if there’s anybody in another sport that is even as close to what he’s accomplished nine championships is both a player and an executive and if it weren’t for Bill Russell in the Celtics he would have had more titles as a player there’s no doubt about that uh draft is coming up soon we got to hit the draft here real quick uh two weeks to be exact um thoughts on where the Jazz might be right now there’s a lot of workouts um what would you do if I we just talked about how great that Jerry West is a GM what would you do if you’re the if you’re Danny a and Justin zanic with these three picks man I I would figure out I would figure out what the player was and then like you know Danny a probably has been watching these guys for a long time Justin xanic you know the the the research and the amount of well now I mean resources that’s that’s poured in uh to this sort of thing and I just find that guy and then go wherever you got to go in the draft get him I mean with with three picks and the assets that they’ve got you know if you got to move up move up I mean if you really don’t see anybody a 10 you know try to move back the hard part would will be identifying where players are going to go and the word I’ve been using on my show is this draft is really flat right and that’s really hard it’s a it’s a flat draft so you don’t know what the teams in front of you are going to do you don’t know where you know there’s going to be a lot of all over the place it’s going to be difficult to predict and we talked to Kristen Peak who who’s their draft expert at Yahoo sports and you know she’s doing mock drafts and stuff and she’s like I I I mean it’s just everything is moving everywhere all at once and I bet the you know the whole league feels that so I think that these types of years are the years to take risks and not to say that Justin Sanic and Danny a are this but a lot of times GMS are so cowardly because they don’t want to get buried by people that really don’t even know you know they don’t want to get criticized for making a pick and oh this player wasn’t slated to go until there and if this is a flop it’s going to be a quote unquote bust you know GMS are really scared of that stuff for some reason and and don’t have the guts to to make picks that they think are are going to work I mean that’s how like that’s how players like Giannis fall all the way to where did he go 15 right something like that you knowm and JMS look at this this basketball player who’s you know seven feet tall and seven feet five you know wingspan or whatever Giannis has can jump out of the gym has extraordinarily High character right you know you hear his interviews and stuff like that and you’re like geez this guy is is the most well adjusted person on the planet and you know people look at him and they’re like oh Bud we don’t know what T about him and I don’t know he’s not slated to go till the bottom part of the first round so we can’t can’t pick that guy because you know Jonathan G gavone or whatever his name is has him slotted here so I don’t want to get the the Angry fan email so we’ll pick this guy you know right so with a with a flat draft where you’re not you know nobody knows who’s gonna go anywhere so if if you like take a flyer on somebody take a risk you know draft like draft a a a big athletic guy that maybe you know that that it’s uh it’s a project or whatever quot unquote but the stealing is you know best player in the league or something like that and I don’t know who that would that is you know you look through Cody Williams is kind of the the popular one to pin with the Jazz at the moment again at the moment and we watched him at Colorado and I thought I thought he was great at Colorado in the in the you know opportunities we got to see him so you know if he’s that guy I don’t know but take a risk take a flyer go for a draft for upside if that’s such a thing yeah there probably is somebody in this draft that that that could be available to them that could help them but Jake I’m looking at the rosters like they drafted three guys last year with guaranteed contracts now do they want to guarantee two more by taking two first round picks and that it would not surprise me at all if they punt in some way in this draft they can’t have that many young players on the roster I don’t think so either uh JJ but like what what is going to be the goal next year and I’m not saying like the stated goal I’m saying the goal you know like they’re gonna always come out and say we’re GNA try and win as many games as we can we Rel in this group and blah blah blah but what truly what’s the goal like because if you you’re right if you have six you know rookie sophomore players on your team well you’re gonna you’re going for worst team in the league likely right for sure probably tell tell low to take a you know take a year to get healthier you can’t do that with low marinin on your roster or Jordan Clarkson You’re gonna have to make a decision about who you are well see that’s the problem but but they can’t let Lowry go the best the best move as a franchise is to extend Lowry because even if you don’t think he’s a dude or a pillar or whatever we wanted you know a shay gilis Alexander who’s gonna you know stay around through the downtimes he’s got so much value in the NBA and there you just can’t you know the smart thing to do is extend that guy so you know I I don’t know they’re gonna be G big game hunting I totally believe that but if you guys look at the history of Danny A’s career you know the ups and the Downs the criticisms too um he picks the opportunity that he wants you know he picks his spots he he picked very carefully as Kevin Garnett spot and that was kind of you know pushed by Paul Pierce but he did that really quickly right you know when he drafted Tatum and made that magical trade you know dumping Marquel folz on the Sixers and having them you know send draft picks for the pleasure is is just hilarious but that was the time not to flip for the vet that was the time to put two young players he’d already drafted Jaylen brown but that was the time to put two young studs together you know and and and look where it’s going of course so you know trading for Kyrie was a that became a thing in like a week like Kyrie turned on LeBron you remember that whole thing and that opportunity popped up out of freaking nowhere you know so when people and I get why Jazz fans ask what the plan is all the time you know what’s the plan what’s the plan what’s the plan it’s like well the plan to lay in the weeds and play your cards as well as you possibly can at all times and you know you think about the big move um James Harden going to Houston that was because Sam prey and James Harden were spatting over like five million bucks talk about the stupidest thing you know like to to be to the NBA $5 million is what’s keeping you apart really and so they flip James Harden to Houston and totally change you know the the trajectory of two franchises and not that I’m a hardened guy per se but guys they were in the finals in Oklahoma City when he was there you know Sam pre’s an incredible incredible GM and he deserves a lot of criticism for how he how he blew up that roster that should have been winning titles oh it’s it’s all GMS it’s an imperfect science I mean I think I happen to think Danny an is probably the best GM resume wise in the league right now well I mean Pat Riley’s pretty incredible right I that might might be a bit of an overstatement but I think Danny a is really good but when he started getting some criticisms in Boston was when he sat on those draft picks forever remember there was there was a rumor Jimmy Butler might be available when when Jimmy was in Chicago and everybody was like a he’s sitting and sitting and sitting and sitting and so you know there are no perfect front office guys out there I mean Jerry West wasn’t a perfect front office guy right uh you just hope the the wins are are big wins and the losses are are minimal the bad decisions are are are minimal and and just be happy that uh Rob pinka isn’t your front office guy oh way a crap on the Lakers at the very end no problem appreciate that the Lakers are such a freaking mess I can’t get enough of it hly I know we were talking about it all the all the headlines are all the headlines are Lakers embarrassed by Dan Hurley and we’re like we can’t get I can’t get I can’t get more of that you know what I mean like I I I there there’s there’s not enough of it to satiate my desires to see like a grumpy uh you know Genie bus or you know just like what LeBron thinks about where this the directions of this thing should go after they threw everything at Dan Hurley and Dan Hurley goes there’s not an amount of money you could pay for me to leave here I can’t do it I I love it this is how I see it in my my stupid mind where everything’s like a TV show right like like uh uh Jeanie finally put her foot down and was like you know what we’re not hiring an amateur Somalia to be our next head like I’m taking my franchise back dang it you know what I’m not gonna be pushed around by you guys anymore and I’m gonna go try and hire a uh uh a real legitimate coach who’s got a red backside and he’s a college guy he’s gonna come tell you guys what to do and then he he says no right because they lowball him because they’re morons and they have to go crawling back to LeBron and you see Shams you know clutches uh a a propaganda arm go right out there be like JJ reic is is back is expected to be the next coach and the Somali is coming to town again and it’s like oh the Lakers tried to take their franchise back now they have to go back and be like LeBron we hire your guy we love it every bit of it are calling it like it is too exact the most love will ever show is what we did today for Jerry West uh for Ching Lakers so there you go that’s we got respect got positive we got positive Laker Vibes in there to go with the bad stuff so there you go uh Jake Scott every day Jake and Ben 10 to noon and he does a phenomenal don’t get it I I don’t get it and the quote that he had today yeah let me read this this is a quote from a few months ago okay this is a quote tell me who you think was was saying this quote it’s not a half the time thing it’s not a sometimes thing it’s not a most of the time thing it’s an every time thing if you want to be a winning organization and put yourself in position to win championships and be competitive everything that you do matters and the blank exploitive that is nothing to do with winning the blank exp needs to get out of the building so that’ll be the focus moving forward was that Robert Salah is that their G was that Brie Hall their running back what’s his name Joe Thomas no no who’s the guy that was that was Aaron Rogers okay and now he’s not showing up for OTAs because is this his uh why hold on is this his we talking about practice oh yeah moment this is 100% that we’re talking about mandatory talking about OTAs talking about OTAs the thing is not a game not a game not even a preseason game OTAs but mandatory I I I don’t know we don’t need to know but can we know what the event was if it’s a personal thing all understand it doesn’t seem like that’s the case and here’s the other thing it was important to him all right so is he have did he did he have a child uh what’s going on here because I bet that if we knew what the real reason was maybe we’d have and if it was like semi legit we’d have nobody would care we would no we would go I get it and you’d also go all right well it’s Aaron Rogers he doesn’t need to be at the OTAs right the thing is is that the team didn’t excuse it and they it’s weird and they got to get better and this is a big year for him and the organization it’s a make or break year for the GM the coach and Aaron my favorite part is uh the team said they it was not a it’s it’s not an excused absence for the two-day mini camp but then you also have Robert Sal saying oh we’re 100% in Step Aaron Rogers and US of course what else is he going to say what a horse crap look this isn’t a story unless Aaron Rogers said what I just quoted just a few months ago right like when was that like uh it was during the well good guy walk the walk be a leader do your job no days off there you go Aaron Rogers everybody $111,000 fine coming his way for missing which 101 that’s not bad that’s a that’s a hefty I thought it was going to be like six figures you have to pay $177,000 into the team pot for that goes for cheeseburgers during the season basically a team swer jar right no well and it’s that’s a that’s a collective bargaining agreement yeah that’s a collective bargaining agreement settled on dollar amount too you miss mandatory OTAs it’s $50,000 $50,500 a day two days see you H $101,000 there you go is that a ride [Laughter] off it’s a little tax break for you all right we’ll uh all we have time for the uh NFL Blitz we’ll take a break we’ll come back uh fight fans the professional fighters league is making its debut in Salt they just go you know what it’s too it’s like when are you going to be back are you going be back or you’re not going to be back uh sorry Jeremy’s got the explanation what do you have over there you’re on web version was a tendon of some sort you know what yeah but that’s good a tendon of some sort that doesn’t help what what’s going on with his leg team doc called me up what happened ah it’s a tendon of some sort probably a muscle in there he can’t play that’s there’s a bone there’s a tendon what did there was an old bit sign Phil didd he goes well the old commercial that would just show the human body that was just a mouth that was open and then the tube that went down to the circle area and that’s all we know about the human body well is it the tube or is it the circle area no it’s a it’s a leg there’s a muscle probably some uh tendons of some sort involved you’re welcome a rare leg injury I love how Jeremy’s like oh I got the explanation uh it’s a tendon of some sort that’s good r that was a little bit more little less vague than rare leg injury but all right not much best and worst brought to you by the selection of Kia Subaru Chevy Jeep Dodge or Ram that you’re gonna love Doug Smith dealerships in American Fork and Spanish Fork if it’s got fork in the city name there’s a Doug Smith dealership there you got to go check it out great service starts with noow and nobody knows like Doug d uh let me see here oh yeah the worst again it’s uh you know Jerry West passed away and 86 years old I would say that’s about as good of a of a life as someone could ever live in the World of Sports so there you go um and then there was also the news today that got kind of missed in in in a lot of things for me at least was MJ Daniels was killed in a shooting he plays for Southern Miss he’s a football player for Southern Miss was killed in a shooting awful so an actual bad bad bad uh on that one uh the best we’ll end with the with the positive note you ready for this yeah one vote away from hosting the 2034 Winter Games in Salt Lake City so the selection committee gets together um and so yeah next month is that what it is yeah so let I I’ll I’ll get straight to it uh you’re going to get the official announcement in Paris as the Olympics begin it’s happening you know what’s great that’ll be the one they send you to JJ they’re like you get to go to Tokyo during Co and then we’ll send you let me throw a pin at the at the wall they’re sending Mike Hedrick for that one they’re sending the big dogs no they sent me to Tokyo to cover Co Olympics they’re sending Mike Kedrick to to cover the big announ you know what Dei will be there because it’s her backyard I think I think one of the major ski jumps is in Deanie’s backyard in Park City come on no they’re going they’re going they’re going to Paris for that announcement that’s awesome yeah I’m not joking that’s cool yeah it’s happening you don’t send them if you don’t think it’s going to be a positive deal nope flight’s booked we’re ready Sam farth will beat the Olympics too I’m gonna tell my kids by the way they they need to work for something that’s adjacent to the the Olympics when it comes to town because there’s there’s they pay people man I knew somebody who drove during the Olympics just like drove uh uh some people around like dignitaries stuff like that you know like lowlevel dignitaries or like people Uber drivers before there was Uber yes but they were like working for the US Olympic Committee right and he was making like 60 bucks an hour wow it’s come on man let’s go all right 2034 there you go ACC when TV and radio cide love it this is what you got you’re listening to JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars don’t touch that on 975 the KSL Sports [Music] so all right welcome back we were just uh it’s John Bowen Hammer Bowen Hammer who’s the uh Chief championships officer at the ug usgaa um former BYU golfer won the National Championship back in 1981 and he was on that golf team and he is the USGA Chief championships officer you think he’s got a fun gig oh the the best that’s pretty nice that’s really nice they’re all he’s like I’ll be out there this this next week oh you’re not coming out this week is it a championship oh I guess it’s not then I won’t be there I’m only going to the Championships don’t give me an open don’t give me a proam give me the championship that’s a pretty dope uh resume right there all right uh speaking of golf Patrick Harrington uh one of uh one of Ireland’s prized sons in golf Patrick Harrington is has been uh inducted into the Golf Hall of Fame which is a really cool thing we were just talking about the uh the Golf Hall of Fame which is just recently been uh finished out there in Pinehurst and and it’s they’ve got the whole thing going on and it’s a it’s a sight to behold I’m I I would I would assume and Patrick Harrington uh revealed this week that part of the reason he was able to get to the level of playing golf to be worthy of being in the Golf Hall of Fame he avoided hamburgers for multiple years why he believes giving up hamburgers for five years helped them Reach the World Golf Hall of Fame I bet it didn’t in my Heyday I wouldn’t eat a french fry I didn’t eat I didn’t eat a burger for years I didn’t eat red meat at night for years what does that mean red meat at night great band name by the way you just eat it in the morning 10 years not doing this 10 years steaking eggs 10 years Zach’s a great I I went five years and uh W the won the order of Merit in valderama in 2006 because I and I can attribute it to the clean eating of no fries and no Burger come on he said uh it’s about six of us though there was my family and we came back and we had 12 Burgers we were all hungry and uh I know I had two of the Whoppers that’s how he broke that’s how he broke his ham where he went Burger King he broke his he broke his his Burger fast with the with a flame broiled Whopper his way gosh sport JJ athletes continue to amaze me yeah when it comes to the level of superstition that they’ll have it’s insane hey whatever works and it did for him so congrats to him being in the World Golf Hall of Fame all right we’ll uh take the break we’ll come uh back tomorrow a Thursday edition of the program for JJ our producer Jeremy I’m Alex we be back then everybody 975 the KSL Sports Zone
