Center rankings, NBA Draft thoughts, and offseason options for the Grizzlies

[Applause] Mor with a running start elevat Point D oh my goodness TI game in overtime Gasol will turn his he is gone is on top s remain Conley now a three counting a 15o lead for Memphis and Blake Griffin gets into it on the floor with Randol hard to tell if there are any punches being thrown under there but Griffin took acceptance Adams going long Mor H it he hit it he hit it J Insanity you got to be kidding welcome to grits and grinds a Memphis Grizzlies podcast my name is Keith Parish on today’s episode I’m joined by Chris Harrington Chris how are you doing what’s up coming at you from The partially unpacked home office at the new home office of Harrington Associates here in St Paul Minnesota yeah how is Timberwolves country um there’s a house in our neighborhood that had a big banner on maybe it still does I haven’t been over there in a couple weeks but during the playoffs had a big banner that just said Nas Reed I was GNA make a joke and ask if it was a Nas Reed flag it was literally a NZ Reed flag there’s a banner across the side of a house but speaking of Naz Reed Flags one of my wife one of the people works in my wife’s office like one of the office assistants has a big Nas Reed flag on the wall behind her desk yeah so so Nas Reed extremely popular in the Twin Cities you could do the thing where it’s like hey was your house flying a Nas Reed flag and you could do the Alo you be like Oh My Wife puts the flags up I don’t the flags aren’t me Nas Reed seems like he’s the most popular and I mean of course anony Edwards is the most Untouchable but I feel like Nas Reed is a very close second NZ Reed is the people’s champ like maybe KY Anderson was at a couple years ago and and whatever but NZ Reed is the people’s champ here my son it’ll be more my son than my wife my wife doesn’t care enough about any of it my son very quickly develop dual allegiances oh yeah Wolves beat the Nuggets yeah I mean what are you gonna do like especially with the last 12 months of being a Grizzlies fan that’s right and then you experience and see Joy it’s it’s hard not to be tempted especially with the Youth of the world um Anthony Edwards man hard guy not to root for yeah uh I think it’s just funny just I think uh like uh 12 months ago I was being like we could offer the full mle for Nas Reed and um I I think we may talk about my Center’s article a little bit later in the pod but you no Reed was not on the list I I don’t think that’s a doable situation yeah again like they have all these luxury Tech concerns going forward but you know the one thing regardless of who the owner is if it’s Glen Taylor Mark Lorie or Alex Rodriguez or uh Mayor Bloomberg who maybe he’s possibly involved too now um the uh Nas Reed not going anywhere did you think we would mention Michael Bloomberg and Samuel Alo in the first two and a half minutes of a grits and grms podcast because I I did not I I have I have a brief Michael Bloomberg story that that is close to to to the heart of my family my wife on and off New Yorker subscribers for 20 years or currently off but but at one point we were on and we’re reading there was a letter to the editor this is when Bloomberg was mayor there’s a letter to letter to the editor in the New Yorker and it was from noted artist David hotney and it was a rant against Michael Bloomberg that culminated with him calling Bloomberg bonkers bossy boots Bloomberg now whenever any anyone in the house sort of uh has a you know starts to get a little tyranical they’re referred to as a Bonkers bossy boots Bloomberg wow that’s the original BBB before big baller brand that’s right that’s that’s impressive all right so Chris um we are like a week and a half away from the draft right now um we’ve been doing draft coverage you have and I have for like a month at least now we’re trying we’re out here trying I’ve hit the point where noted dra draft Nicks that we are right so I’ve hit the point now where like I I did I feel like I had a concise list of like these seven guys I’d be super fired up if we got these seven guys and it was people like Ron Holland and I was like you know what I’m I’m won over by machas buis like I’m interested I’m ready your list was longer than mine then well so now now my list is like it’s gotten to be like 19 names I’m now like oh this this Bob Carrington guy seems super cool I just like having cool guys around and so yeah it keeps my list gets longer and longer as you’re saying your list is getting shorter there’s a level you know because for me like I don’t think the mock drafts are gospel but for someone who’s not watching these guys all year you got to start somewhere right right you start at the top you start working your way down um to to try to get to form your own opinions and I know the G’s got to pick at 39 so I gotta got I got to do some more work and pretend like I care about guys in the 30s but there are certain guys who who become like you know certain sudden like you know guys on the upswing in in in in the draft world who I just didn’t get down far enough to spend a lot of time with like Bob Carrington like donon Holmes I don’t I don’t really have a strong feel for those guys so D I mentioned donon Holmes on my previous episode and this is again funny for the two of us who are complete amateurs with the prospects right donon Holmes to me is the Desmond bane of big men in this draft by that I mean Desmond Bane’s draft Year everyone was like oh yeah Desmond Bane he’s expected to go in the 20s I love him he’s he’s gonna be amazing like oh this mock draft has Desmond Bane and like going 37 and everyone’s like oh yeah this guy’s gonna be an awesome Pro and then it turns out this guy’s an awesome Pro for me I’m getting Don Holmes Vibes of that where every like oh this is this is one of the best center prospects a little bit older may you know and it’s like well that guy sounds amazing but again that’s just my ignorance he’s the next name on the center list that I didn’t I haven’t gotten the point I’ve watched him a little bit but I haven’t spent the time with him that I spent with you know K wear and K filipowski right those guys because he he intended to be below a little bit below all of those guys you know on the list throughout the process yeah the other names that everyone keeps saying um as far as like second rounders because I’ve been looking at like you you know now oh we get the 39th pick and then I’ve started throwing all these fake trades where we move up to 32 or 31 or 34 but still every mock draft I see of like the constant names that people keep mentioning and this is not just Grizzly specific but people are like uh Dylan Jones like oh that guy’s gonna be great and it’s like well why isn’t he mocked in the first rounds and then it’s like uh everyone’s talking about this big guy uh MBO Jonathan mogbo and I feel like everyone’s like a hot name of late that’s a hot name and everyone’s like you know oh so and so got him with the 50th pick and it’s like oh that’d be a great draft you get him with the 50th pick one of the I don’t remember remember whether it was a ringer or somewhere else one of the places that that that did player comps with all the players early on the player comp for Dylan Jones was David Rody and I said I’ll just put him back if it’s David Rody but they’ve been there they’ve done that I’ll push him down the list a little bit I’ll get to him later you know I I wish I wish I knew which site one of the major sites actually did realistic comps and I no does realistic comps be case scenario it’ll be a guy who played 15 years in the NBA did you see the Kevin oconor one I can’t even remember the player was it buis I I think it might have been buis Kevin o’ Conor’s comp best case scenario Chandler Parsons worst case scenario Kyle Anderson yeah which is which the best and which is the worst I want I want the worst no my my favorite there was one I can’t remember who which one it was but there was one where the best case scenario with Alex SAR was jiren Jackson right that’s and the worst case which is fine yeah the worst case was Nick Claxton and yes jiren Jackson is better than Nick Clon but I got news for you the worst case of scenario of alexar is not Nick Clon it’s like Don maker or something like that well that’s what I was joking about with Ron Holland where I’m like that guy’s Josh Jackson and it’s like you know maybe not hopefully not he’s got the motor there’s a lot of these guys where I’m like why isn’t this guy skish um I’m also cracking up some of these dudes are gonna be fan maker and Nicholas Skil dude Reet he has the same size of hands as me I I was I made a joke on Fast Break breakfast this week where I was laughing where re Shay was was rising up in all the mock drafts and on the draft boards because he hadn’t worked out for any teams yet right like Alex SAR had worked out for everybody and they’re like oh there’s some thought of maybe the Hawks weren clinging and it’s like well that’s bad for sar’s workout and then it’s like Reese’s St moving up it’s like no one even measured him and then he came in with like subpar athletic measurements subpar wingspan subpar hand size not that I know what hand size even matters in the NBA but Chris Wallace was a fan of hand size I can tell you that that’s the first time I ever heard anyone talk about hand size with draft prospects it was Chris Wallace because Rondo had had enormous hands well that turned out Rondo was fantastic um so what’s what’s your short list right now for for the Grizzlies in the draft if they stay at nine or if they just move slightly you know up to seven down to 11 or something to the degree that I have a feel for this draft and I’ll pretend to for the Ser for for sake of the Pod yeah I don’t like the way it’s shaping up for the Grizzlies so the guys for me the guys I like are Steph castle ston castle and and Reed Shepard those are the guys I am most convinced will be good yeah um and then after that you know I you know SAR to me could be all over the place he could be jiren Jackson orthon maker but like I see it like a s foot guy a seven4 wingspan who can defend all over the floor sure um lingan I I I’m not I’m not as high on Clan as some I’m not as low on some but like do I think he has a very good chance to be a quality starter in the NBA yeah I think the bar is pretty low to be like zubich or joob purle or something like that which like guess what those guys are quality starters in the NBA um the guys who I did not like relative for the for the Grizzlies are the guys who seem to now be slipping unfortunately and that’s delam and that’s and that’s topich yeah I just don’t see the bits there but now it looks like both those guys are going after that I was hoping those would go earlier and push somebody down um so I don’t know I like I I I’m sort of in trade down mode because like I I want Castle or Shephard or kingan I guess um I would take richet if he were there which he won’t be and I would take Holland probably I you know I like the swing on Holland a little more than some of the other guys in that range but what do I know do I do I have a firm conviction that Ron Holland will be better than Cody Williams or dton connect I can’t from what seen I like the swing on most of those guys my current like swing back towards wanting Ron Holland is just imagining um just the athleticism and the defensive drive and I think about the G the players the Grizzlies have been using the last few years where they were they were theoretically Shooters but they could not make shots and I think about like uh imagine if every Z Williams minute went to Ron Holland like johnar needs lob threats we need athleticism in my mind and size and like just getting another guy who can run and finish like that seems amazing to me it seems pretty easy to imagine and you you want better than this but it seems pretty easy to imagine Rod Holland as a healthier more aggressive Z Williams like a a stronger more aggressive better defensively healthier Z Williams you still may may not get shooting out of it right yeah if you get a guy who is 68 who can defend in multiple positions and who gets after it and runs the floor and catches Jaws lobs and and scores in transition yeah I mean the Grizzlies everyone knows the grizli need more shooting and everyone knows that Grizzlies need a center these things are both true but I think the Grizzlies could use just more size and athleticism generally and so Holland is a 68 like big- time Athlete on the wing is very appealing to me apparently if he has the both the ability and the demeanor to be a plus Defender which he seems to have I value that a lot yeah I think the one thing that I do maybe want out of this draft or just this offseason it’s it’s just beyond shooting it’s size and of course that’s in the big man situation but it’s also for me it’s the wings and that’s why I haven’t even I haven’t even put in the effort to learn about like Dillingham as much and I haven’t even focused that much I I think Reed Shepard’s gonna be gone I don’t know about Steph Castle but it’s like um he’s gonna be gone when the gis is pick I’m guessing but like once you’re in the small guard business with John Moran it becomes so much harder to think about yeah I see that and Dillingham for me I just crossed off the list like even if he’s good this doesn’t work for the Grizzlies I just think Shepard is such a good shooter and is such a solid basketball player that at some point in this draft if if I’m convinced a guy is gonna be good I just gotta think be good and so so I I like Shepard even though I know that’s not an ideal fit either but Dillingham is just a bridge too far in terms of size yeah um let’s talk more about things we know more about uh I think which is players in the NBA current NBA players current NBA players uh we have a much better grasp on over at the daily memphian you wrote an article where you laid out uh your list of centers I keep having to enunciate centers so I don’t say Sinners I was saying Sinners so much I’m like you know what I got to hit that t a little better had enough of those already in Memphis Yeah I know um centers who uh could be fits for the Grizzlies and you sort of ranked it based on the ranking was based on it’s a little amorphous I’m calling them best targets okay and me that that’s a little Loosey Goosey and that that takes into account sort of two things generally one how how much would this player impact to Memphis gz Le us a basketball player and two the method of acquisition the likelihood and method of acquisition so you factor an opportunity cost right yes you have to trade your ninth pick to get a player or player a but you just sign player B with the taxpayer midlevel yeah that opportunity cost just part of the equation right so it’s not just a ranking of best players so that’s something I specifically said earlier on an episode I haven’t done this work yet as far as ranking my preferences because it is it’s funny when I’m like oh I would be very excited if we traded for Jared Allen and I also would be very excited if we signed cavon Looney for four $5 million a year you know like I both of those things excite me on the one hand cavon Looney plus the ninth you GNA keep the ninth pick the other hand you probably gave away the ninth pick and maybe other stuff so like I haven’t I haven’t worked it out of my head like oh I would really like us to uh make an aggressive trade and pick up whoever it is player X also if goo batad joined the team on a free agent deal I’d be pretty happy i’ do a little fist pump like all right ALS yes yeah that’s sort of one realm of players right the B goab Bazi Kavon Looney Andre Drummond’s a popular one there are some others you could throw in that’s a group of players who you could get presumably without sacrificing anything of note other than money on your cap sheet you know so on this list it basically starts with some bigger names uh you know a little bit of a spoiler um I don’t know how realistic a lot of those names are like how far do you have to go down to where you get to a player where you’re like yeah I could definitely see that happen I where I can see it’s not a list most of the most thing most madeup trades and signings never happen let’s start with that right and in fact at most one or two of these things could happen because once you do one you can’t do another right um this is not based upon known reporting that players are available much less known reporting that Grizzlies are interested in players it’s more conjecture than that but it’s not a universe of like every Center in the world either I have it’s it’s things where can I imagine scenarios playing out where this could happen in most cases those scenarios are not going to play out but I can imagine a scenario in which Jaylen Duran’s on the trade market and The Grizzlies can trade for Jaylen Duran I can’t imagine the scenario where the’re trade for nicoa yic right it’s within the realm of can I imagine can I see the scenarios play out most of those scenarios won’t but can I see the scenarios playing out where where things could happen and so it’s it’s pretty Broad in that regard yeah I feel like my I I talked about Duran before and my my pullback there I think a lot of times maybe we think all right there’s a new front office they didn’t draft the guy maybe they want to just totally reset but then also part of it I don’t know I feel like front offices as opposed to like new owners new front offices some sometimes just like chill out for a second just like don’t don’t do anything too drastic too rash I I feel like the Pistons moving Duran um would be pretty drastic um the other piece of the puzzle with that you can apply this you know to to to Isaiah Stewart if you want to look past the center situation you can apply play it you know what who who Who’s GNA be there at five for them yeah me the interesting question is is kingan gonna get to five and it sounds like maybe he won’t there’s a lot of there’s even talk about him at one to Atlanta but if kingan gets to five to me that presents an interesting question for Detroit you could just take somebody else and let kingan fall to six or you could be that could be the prime trade up destination for or Portland OR for Chicago whoever wants trade up for kingan or could they look at it and say we kind of like kingan better than the guy we got and he’ll be on the first year of a rookie deal instead of the third year of a rookie deal and then then does that that on top of the front office change not the front office change by itself but the clinging opportunity plus the front office change is that start to put you know a jayen Duran in play I think so I think somebody on Detroit’s going to be in play maybe it won’t be him maybe it’ll be Jaden Ivy maybe it’ll be somebody else but I think there’s going to be some kind of shake up with that roster so you mentioning Isaiah Stewart actually reminded me of something I wanted to say earlier um when we’re just talking about like will’ll be happy with a big trade or we’ll be happy with just signing a useful player I think one thing that I I keep repeating because I hope it gets into the the ears and brains of all Grizzlies fans is just the idea that like just getting a competent useful big I think it’s going to elevate the Grizzlies so much like like I feel like sometimes we get too carried away with like I like Isaiah Stewart he’s not very good it’s like okay whatever you want to judge Isaiah Stewart as far as the undersized centers in the NBA yeah he is mediocre and maybe his contract like it’s like I think it’s like 50 million a year maybe that’s not ideal what you would pay but also give Trey jimson’s minutes to Isaiah Stewart is going to make the Grizzlies way better like just adding a guy who can who’s a big bruising body who can shove guys around who can rebound and will launch some three-pointers I think that’s just going to raise the Grizzlies overall team performance by a ton and that’s the same feeling I have about even some of these like guys you might sign on a minimum or I’m like just Daniel Tyson on a minimum might make the Grizzlies a lot better you know like that kind of thing well I I think one of the scenarios I wrote about this a little bit in the intro to that column the G could go all kinds of different ways I think people because we know they’re they are going to add a center or someone who can play center to the roster because that is the one thing we know will happen that’s the only thing we know will happen yeah because of that I think there’s been an assumption that that’s the main thing that’s going to happen and that’s not necessarily the case I I think the path of lease resistance for the Grizzlies um if if you if you looked at like seven different paths and like which one’s most likely no path is is above 50% likely because there’s enough of them but if you try to pick one what’s the most likely I think it is using the ninth pick on some perimeter best player available to get you know a rookie scale contract on someone to add depth whether that’s Ron Holland or dton connect or Cody Williams or whoever you like whoever they like and keeping Luke Gard maybe maybe on a new contract that starts a little lower and then just going out and spending your taxpayer taxpayer mid level to you know on cavon Looney if he’s becomes a free Asian or or on Andre Drummond or go bat and then maybe at 39 you know you’re drafting a a developmental big or maybe you’re trading up from 39 to try to take a shot at Holmes or you know one of these guys that kind of sort of less less less less exciting way to fill out your roster I think there’s a good chance that’s what happens because the reality for the Grizzlies next season is the players are going to take them where they’re trying to go for the most part are going to be the players already on the roster yeah I agree with that totally um speaking about trading up from like the 39th pick there are just a lot of um there’s a lot of these picks that they’re going to move on draft night on day one or two of of draft night you see like the Jazz who I pitched maybe a controversial Marcus Smart for the 10th pick in John Collins trade last episode um but the Jazz also had the 29th and uh 3 second pick so they got two picks like the the Knicks have 24 and 25 um there’s just a lot of I there’s a lot of picks I think that might be available where the Grizzlies are just like here’s pick 39 and zy Williams you know CU one thing with the Grizzlies that like um like Z and Santi on the last years of their rookie deals very high probability those guys get moved um well the STI thing in particular with zire is not getting an extension this summer that’s just not going to happen the Santi thing is sort of like if you can get an extension out a good number you probably do it but it doesn’t feel likely no and it sort of feels like he seems like an obvious guy to try to try to move ahead ahead of that decision you know I mean what’s what’s the least I mean zire like you wouldn’t give him John Kar money I don’t know if he would take it but like it’s a good question you know like what’s the least you would be like if zier’s like three years 22 million extension well the problem with that kind of is that in a vacuum that sounds like a good bet right yeah just you know the Cap’s rising and when you lock this guy in well that’s that’s what’s the way they thought about the contar deal when they did it yeah and the contar deal not it’s not necessarily in a vacuum a bad deal because he’s a playable guy but they’re right now headed over the first apron of the tax and so a $5 million contract on a guy who can be your 10th 11th man sounds good in theory but in reality it’s like oh no like that’s money that you know I just think every extra dollar means so much more at this point and I don’t think you can afford to have guys out of your rotation you’re paying you know much above minimum if you can help it yeah and that I think is important to keep in mind when you think of if you’re a fan of Santio dama and like I like San dama a lot um but like I’ve cooled on his ability to help in the playoffs you know and last year I thought was very disappointing and then when you look at salary tax concerns going forward which is what everyone keeps repeating when I pitch a trade when I’m like I would take an undervalued um DeAndre hunter from the Hawks and he makes a lot of money and we’re going to be skating up against the first apron for a couple of years now like people are like oh that’s too expensive we can’t do it but then I’m like well you can’t do you want to resign Santi because if you resign Santi you’re also going to be up against the first apron I would rather pay a proven useful player you know 20 million then pay three bad players also 20 million or you know sorry call calling Santi bad um but uh oh let’s go back to the the center ideas um so a couple of them I’m not going to spoil your whole article but like a couple of them like names I’ve mentioned before I’ve grown I’ve accepted the Fate that I feel like w Carter Jr is probably gonna sign an extension with the magic I don’t feel like he’s probably super available and the only scenario with him this is one this has been the scenario I thought about going back to the trade deadline looking forward to this summer and it’s an unlikely scenario but the Magic’s roster is way too tilted to the front Court talent wise yeah is there a guy at nine who they’re just really enamored with like you know look at some of the like there was a time where Rob Dillingham was considered a potential first overall pick in this draft there was a time when Nia toic was considered a potential first overall pick in this draft you know do they think Dalton connect is gonna be a 20-point scorer out of the gate you know is there a guy like that on the perimeter who their front office thinks has a chance to be a star on the perimeter and if so is that an opportunity to jump up and do that because they already have palaman Caro they already have FR vogner they already have Jonathan Isaac who they were starting in the playoffs ahead of Wendell Carter you know they’ve got moger they can bring back they’re just so I don’t think I I think I don’t think it’s a likely scenario but I that’s the thing I could see if there’s someone at nine they really like so yeah actually you showed me the err of my ways you now convinced me actually it became more likely like the idea of Dillingham on the magic makes a ton of sense and yeah so maybe that if it is you know nine4 18 and W Carter I don’t know if you get you know like if that would just be because you’re have to Max some salary and so if you’re giving them like you know zire Williams or whatever maybe maybe you don’t get the 18 maybe it’s just nine zier and conar for window Carter you know something like that or the nine zier and and and Jake laravia you know yeah that I don’t know if you get the 18 yeah I don’t know I don’t think I would trade the ninth pick for wi Carter Jr but that’s just uh that’s question because you know you don’t know what you’re going to get with the ninth pick Carter you know is good you also know that he misses a lot of games I feel like Carter you know is average not to be semantic uh but like it depends a average for a starter good for a player I mean you know 250 players in the NBA you know yeah but but are you gonna get at nine are you gonna get an average player you always think you’re gonna the best the better case scenarios of these guys you might get nothing you might get zier you got it 10 and what people thought was a better draft Yeah so of all the names you listed in there what’s so what maybe do you think Remains the the most likely so I don’t I mean I think the most likely is like a Drummond Looney badad kind of thing just a signing yeah or moving around in the draft right moving down for kle we there’s all this reporting out there including like our own Drew Hill asking directly to Zack gidy and Zack gidy saying oh the chres have always liked me yeah yeah I mean there are people look at it say well the Grizzlies wouldn’t have interest in Zach except there’s literally multiple reports that the Grizzlies have interest in zachi so I think moving around in the draft for an Edy a wear a filipowski a holes something like that if you move down in the draft and get one of those guys at like a lower salary in the draft you could also you could do that and sign and sign Andre Drummond or cavon Looney or whatever and sort of like you know get you a couple a couple of quarters instead of a dollar kind of situation so another another team that that’s been linked to Edie is the Raptors did did yakob purle make your list I can’t remember well he’s he’s at the end I do a little thing of like how did How Could You Forget these guys oh got my guys aren’t on the list so s Vini pod they did a mock draft s bini’s pod did a mock draft a few days ago and they only did like two trades in the whole Mock and one of them was the Grizzlies trading down from 9 to 19 and getting yaka purle yeah I thought of that exact same scenario when I did this column right yeah and what I concluded was yakob purle is three he’s got three more years at close to 20 million per yes and I think that’s too much money for the kind the type and level of player he is I there’s a real question whether Grizzlies want to lock into a traditional Center like that I think it’s one thing to lock into a borderline Allstar like Jared Allen for two years it’s another thing to lock into a paint bound Center who’s a yaka purle for three years yeah and when you compound that with you’re moving down in the draft and you’re probably giving up Luke Canard shooting for salary match I just don’t I don’t see it to me it’s not it’s not outlandish I mean you could make a case for it but I to me it doesn’t cross the line into something I I feel like they would do Luke Luke Luke Canard plays 10 minutes a game on my healthy Grizzly rotation dreams um I don’t I don’t mind losing but again are you if you if you want the optionality to play different styles yeah and you think jiren at the five is what you’re going with a lot you want a big Center in the mix but do you want yaka Perle for $20 million for three years yeah I mean that’s for me that’s the price of that’s the price of good centers and I’d say yaka purle like he’s a better player than W Carter Jr but he just his archetype is much different so I don’t know yeah and the other thing is I feel like if you’re moving down the draft part of the reason to move down in the draft is because you like the centers you can get when you move down so if you down to get a yaka purle like you’re probably not going to draft Zach Ed or you could draft you could but maybe you get Edy at 19 maybe you get filipowski at 19 maybe you get uh K we or EES Missy at 19 also you can pick up the 31st pick I don’t know I’m not like uh I’m not trying to persuade people to take the trade but I do think the trade makes sense I’m like yeah it makes sense like that would I wouldn’t hate it um I think yaka per will make the team really really good I also mentioned a similar thing because I said the same I didn’t know Vini said that I said the same TR last episode and then it was also uh you did say that I heard I heard that there you go so yeah um so there’s also similarity with like uh doing like Kelly oen who is not a necessarily starter and that one’s weirder where it’s like he’s not I got two with the oen part of it did not include on the list one I’m not moving down in the draft to get Kelly oen I don’t think right two they just traded for him and gave him an extension and they seem to do that in part because he’s Canadian so I don’t don’t think they’re just aching to just just get rid of him you know well they’ they’ve invested a lot in oen and Perle the last two seasons and so that’s why it’s like what are first of all what are they doing uh second of all I like your point about the Canadian thing that’s why they got RJ Barrett they’re doing Team Canada over there um you know I mean the trade down up of Toronto is interesting and you sure if you take players out of it you think about just a SED draic trade like is that nine for 19 and 31 I feel like that’s not from a raw like draft pick trade that’s not good enough no so what what else do you have to get to do that you know um I do think I do think as far as don’t know as far as just raw draft pick trades like N9 and 39 for 10 and 29 from the from the Jazz I don’t know like do they want to move up one one spot in the first round why is Utah doing that Utah has to be really convinced you’re you’re going to take the guy they really wanted otherwise why does Utah do that is Utah going to use all three of those picks 10 29 and 32 um let’s uh let’s wrap up we’ve gone long enough but we do need to mention before we go Xavier Tillman had a moment in the finals mean the tman thing is wild because he’s had moments this is the NBA Finals granted but he has had postseason moments now yeah in like four different years against four different opponents for two different teams and he’s still never been able to establish himself as a as a a reliable regular season player wait so you said four moments so like there’s there’s hang on there’s there’s obviously the there’s the playin overtime three-pointer against the Warriors there’s the there’s the there’s the game against the Lakers where he just would huge like that was like his first career 2010 game or something or and even later in the series he had good defensive moments against both LeBron and Anthony Davis okay he’s always had good so his rookie season if I’m remembering this correctly his rookie season we were playing I think we were playing the Sixers and like yonasan chunis was getting cooked by embiid and he came in tman came in and I’m like Tillman’s much better at guarding Joel embiid like we got to finish with this guy tman um but yeah so so okay so so you’re counting two from the Lakers series and then obviously Minnesota oh yeah the Minnesota series okay Stephen Adams he came in either game one or game two and had a really good game in that Series yeah um I remember the Minnesota series I’m a little clouded cuz I was already clamoring for hey can we stop playing Tillman by into the series so a little clouded there but he’s made moments we’ve known he could do this yeah I could not I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes watching game three of the finals not that Tillman did this I was more shocked that the Mavericks kept going at him one-on-one he’s a good Defender and the Mavericks should know he’s a good Defender that’s the only that’s the only thing he’s good at you why do you keep going one onone against Tillman it’s frustrating because he had all the all all the opportunity in the world this season I I thought he had a chance to see to be the starting center like all year like and he actually started a good first two or three games for the G Le and then he taed off and then you know got benched for bambo in terms of the starting lineup he had a chance to just have the job all year and his offense just abandoned him and it’s not just the three-point shot it’s his entire offense abandoned yeah I think the three-point shot uh least Le less concerning than the two-point shot and the free throws yeah yeah um I was by the way I know uh no I was say I’m super happy for Tillman because delightful guy and he’s a player with all of his shortcomings I still like when he plays he was one of the guys I’m like I don’t care he defends fine he can’t finish and he’s not that good at rebounding uh have as your fifth big on a minimum contract all right so how many how many free agent centers are actually better than tman it’s not it’s not that many you know I I think Rond you know the thing about goab Bazi is he’s sort of theoretical he doesn’t they really played that much you know the per minute stuff looks pretty good with him and a lot of a lot of areas I I would I would sort of take him over Tillman but I don’t know like is jayen Smith better than tman I you know I like Jaylen Smith I was I was sad spoiler he didn’t make your list guy when you when you look in the numbers he has good rebounding numbers and good three-point shooting numbers and that combination of three-point shooting and rebounding I think is particularly attractive for the Grizzlies but like why doesn’t he play why don’t they play him know well I mean you look at specifically for the Pacers he’s behind Miles Turner he’s behind he was behind Isaiah Jackson a lot of the time but they also swapped him around Rick Carlo kept moving Who The Bigs were my thing for Jaylen Smith isn’t even the three-point shot on paper it’s the fact that he makes 18f Footers he he could just make an 18f footer which is not it’s a lost art but like hard to sign a guy like Jaylen Smith or like Goku Bazi when you have a real need and you’re signing a guy from whose own team just wasn’t really playing him I think that’s a hard thing to have have confidence in I think you do that and you pair that with we moved her out on the draft and we added CL W or Philip Housey or whatever and you sort of doing both at once and giving yourself sort of multiple shots I can see it but I don’t see signing one of those guys and saying this guy is GNA be in the rotation so so so it’s sad because so many of my modest offseason dreams are for players who got dmps in the postseason and it’s like Jaylen Smith DM Goo batad dmps uh Daniel Ty dmps like all these guys not playing in playoff games uh also zavier Tillman dmps until he shows up uh most likely reunion Chris final question Xavier Tillman yonas valent Tunis or Kyle Anderson Well the answer should be Kyle Anderson but it won’t be Kyle Anderson I almost put him on the in the story because like at this at some point like you know he can play with jiren you know like he’s just good like he’s a better player you know I would sign him in a heartbeat and say like you’re you’re my backup center like whatever call put whatever word letters you want to after his name just put them on the basketball floor but that’s not going to happen he’s not going to come back here no and there there was this reporting here in Minnesota about he’s really happy with his family here he’s got a special needs son he likes the school system the school situation he’s in it sounds like he may just take a minimum or something just to stay in Minnesota oh wow so I don’t think that’s going to happen with KY Anderson coming back I guess Tillman more likely because it’s the same thing with Jonas where I feel like there there’s probably less ill will about the exit with tman than the other two and I don’t see yonas I don’t see the Grizzlies and yonas wanting to get back together when they they refus to give to give him an extension yeah I I agree with you I think I think he was like number 20 or whatever the tman kind of makes sense where it’s like yeah hey we we we we rened you out for the postseason you want a ring we let’s let’s pretend those relational hurdle relationship hurdles are not there he is not quite the player he was he if you look at his finishing at The Rim it’s really dropped off he’s not the monster at The Rim he was before it’s not but he’s become a little bit better shooter than he was before and has it reached the stage with him where a could you could you actually get him for a taxpayer mid level probably not but what if you could right and is it reached the stage with him where he he would be more accepting of I’m a 17 minute a guy I’m I’m in the rotation I’m not the guy yeah it wouldn’t be the worst thing there’s worse stuff out there to do than that but I don’t see it happening yeah I I I feel like he’s either going back to the Pelicans or there was some talk about the Kings G get that Lithuania hookup as like sabonis is back up that that that kind of makes sense well anyways Chris um thanks for uh hanging out as always all you guys out there check out uh
