Draymond Green & Derek Fisher debate ’01 Lakers vs. ’17 Golden State Warriors: “It’s a coin flip”

welcome to the brand new Draymond Green Show YouTube channel hit subscribe so you don’t miss out on any of our content I was recently on the big fella podcast uh Shack stradamus sha diesel the big the big shakas um You Name It We The Big Aristotle yeah I was on this podcast he was on the show and we discussed the 01 uh Lakers versus the 17 Warriors now quite frankly if I’m honest I hate when people had these discussions because it’s like you you these people people have these discussions and it’s no merit to the conversation or anything a bunch of hypotheticals or what is however I hypothetically love [ __ ] having these conversations with guys that’s been a part of it and so let’s discuss this like me and Shaq obviously disagreed on who would win the series um I quite frankly got us beating y’all in five but like how you see this series going fish yeah no I mean obviously you know as Champs only you have to respect Champions so I absolutely you know in five I think is you know I don’t know if you got the Lobos in there with you or what’s going on but but in five I don’t know about that I mean Champs against Champs it should be a battle you know it should go to game seven battle um it’s like you said it’s always fun even though it’s not real right to just talk about the possibilities and the matchups and you know you obviously always should think your team is better than anybody else’s team that you know that got it done in that way um you know it’s hard to explain to people how physically dominant Shaq really was like I think people see the videos they they see the backboard Smash and all of that but I don’t know if there’s a recognition of like the way we now run pick and roll to put pressure on the rim to create threes Shaq literally was every pick and roll you ever try to run you could just throw it to him to get the ball to the rim like it and and the most efficient shots in basketballer at The Rim Corner threes free throws and we got all of that because of him in theory and then obviously Kobe was able to do a lot but am I naive to think that like who’s guarding Kevin Durant you know what I’m saying like like like Rick Fox was amazing defensively maybe that’s a cover that he could figure out because Rick was physical and you know but KD was KD obviously Stephen his prime how Elite you guys were defensively you know like we were wish with our 01 team we were fairly predictable because of Shaq Shaq’s dominance so you know what I mean so so defensively you know you guys definitely would have been able to scheme some things and try to you know maybe front and back him and and send a guy over on the Baseline side on if he was fronted as the ball was in the air but you know Shaq literally has changed people’s Dent work bro like that just no team triple team anything could could bad them so all of that to say to me when you talk about like the greatest teams ever it’s got to be a coin toss and it it probably would depend on who has homec court that helps and it depends on what rules are we playing that’s true if we play today R the way I play defense we might have a chance cuz I’m beating him up before we get into it uh this episode is brought to you in part by hyper ice as you know as a 12year veteran myself uh a lot of guys miss out on the recovery that it takes to play in the NBA it’s important that my body can bounce back as I get older um as I’ve told you all before I am a super big fan of hyper I especially the normal Tech boots because I just feel like Superman when I come out of them and as you all know um or may not know I’m letting you know the normant tech Elites are new they’re the best they dished all those extra hoses and the control units from the old models so you can get on the go if you need the normant tech Elites they are great uh this one is fully self-contained with a small set of buttons to select your compression level super easy to travel with and to get set up up after a hard workout after a game or if it’s for you who’s not an athlete after a hard day of work or walking around or chasing the kids around because by the way as I get older chasing these kids around is tough hey and and my son calls me old on The Daily so these are for you as well on top of that the normat tech Elite packs 4 hours of battery life which is enough juice to get full Le compression Cycles in before games after games on the plane after work before work at work how about that at work you saw me podcasting in the norm tech Elites and I was at work that is my day job right now as we have lost and the finals are going on and we’re not playing so don’t get me started on the tech inside this thing the hyper ice has been pioneering recovery science for years and the brand new normant tech Elite takes it to another dimension with seven different compression levels to choose from as I said before it’s not just just for pro athletes it is for you whoever is not a pro athlete which most of you aren’t pro athletes and it is for you so shop all your warmup and Recovery needs at hyperice.com use code Dron for those of you who hate the name Draymond because you hate me but you watch this podcast because you hate me I got a gift for you use the code Draymond on hyper ice.com for 15% off your order today exclusions May apply if I can hold and grab like we could 01 compared to what we might be a to guard you but listen fish I may have to get thrown out of one of the games because I gotta come get you off my man with a crazy screen one of these games I can’t just let you grab my man sure no but uh honestly man for me um like you know y’all y’all were the y’all were the golden standard like we grew up watching y’all and the Spurs dominate everything for me as a kid growing up in the state of Michigan obviously you know seeing the Detroit pisses and their dominance and I know they were able to win one Championship but they were going to Conference Finals um each and every year a couple finals like and that was kind of the standard and and like the brand of basketball that y’all played in is obviously totally different than the Brandon basketball that’s played now and you know when I look at like the rules that y’all play by quite frankly if I’m honest I don’t think we could have beat y’all at those rules like no chance like we play a totally different game however if the rules are are how they are today like yeah I don’t think there’s a chance y’all can keep up with us because you can’t grab like so now guys’s just moving around it’s speed it’s a bunch and and with those rules size becomes less important because you’re almost protected from the size you know and so it’s a very interesting thing n less man I think uh you know just just to be in that for me to be in a conversation of the teams like I grew up watching like the Lakers the Bulls like yeah the Pistons the spur like to be in the conversation with those teams to me is always mindblowing because those are the teams like as a Bas like I was a kid that went to sleep with my TV on I slept the whole night with it on and it’s on ESPN all night Sports Center like I’m I I I ate breathed and you know what else basketball like NBA basketball and so just to be mentioned with those teams for me it’s more of an honor than I could ever imagine same here that’s why I like I refuse to kind of try to fall into the like oh yeah well we would have and this and that because just to even be in the conversation is amazing to begin with like you have to show respect man to teams that have got like I got asked about how I’m going to feel if the Celtics and or when the Celtics do win the title as a former Lakers and I’m like well yeah of course you know I would want the Lakers to win as much as possible but the way that I watched I mean I had two years in Golden State but I’m I’m not part of the Warriors Fabric in the way that you guys are absolutely but I can watch it and respect it and and cherish greatness and teams that win titles found a level of greatness in that season that nobody else did and I I can’t hate on that I might not love it but I’m not hating on we’re this close to crowning an NBA champion I like the Celtics by the way in six Jaylen Brown’s going to be my MVP and I love the Celtics in game one but sign up 90 seconds put in the code Collins c o l i n draftking sports book an official sports betting partner of the NBA if you’re a new customer bet five bucks that’s it just bet five bucks and you’ll get 150 bucks instantly in bonus bets the code Collins c o l i n shows them that you’re a new customer to get 150 bucks in bonus bets only on DraftKings the crown is yours I’m leaning Celtics in six baby

Draymond Green and Derek Fisher debate who would win a seven-game series between Kobe Bryant, Shaq, and the 2001 Los Angeles Lakers or Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, and the 2017 Golden State Warriors.

  1. Gotta woth Lakers because they had shooters to . They have no answer for shaq or kobe in they prime youngeers sleeping on big shot bob and fox

  2. The 01 kings took the Lakers to 7 games. I am 37 years old and I remember a few teams pushing that laker team including the blazers and the kings. I think the dubs would have edged them in a close series

  3. Lakers win!!! Draymond already forgot chris paul got hurt in the houston series in game 5 they were down 3 2 they wouldve lost šŸ˜‚

  4. The biggest achilles heel of Shaq's Lakers teams have always been "quick, scoring guards". Mike Bibby & the '02 Kings Double High Post offensive sets nearly destroyed the Lakers. Bibby was receiving hand-offs from Webber/Divac and pulling up wide open 20 footers, which would be three-pointers against Curry.

Allen Iverson did a number on the Lakers in 2001 as well, and then finally, Chauncey Billups ended that dynasty. Neither Derek Fisher, Gary Payton, or Kobe was able to guard Chauncey, If Shaq coudn't defend the baseline pick'n roll of the late 90's early '00s, what makes you think he can defend the high pick'n rolls today?

  5. The rules is really the totally of it. Back in the day maybe lakers in 6. Today’s rules warriors in 5.

  6. People keep thinking about ā€œwho stopping shaqā€ mf NOBODY. But the lakers not stopping the greatest team assembled… warriors in 5

  7. Mindsets will overcome skill in this the is championship BATTLE.. Delusional is a drug…. You’re not beating them.
Of y’all couldn’t beat 2001 wasn’t even yall best year bruh

  8. Allen Iverson sixers won a game against the Lakers u think that sixers team is going to come close to beating the golden state warriors 17 team hell no. They beating the Lakers in 6

  9. If the sac kings can hang with lakers so can warriors. Game 7 will come down to Kobe vs Curry and Durant since they will just hack a Shaq in the end.

  10. It's funny how Draymond keeps on asking this rhetorical questions. . Bruh with these warriors line up with KD the center, Kobe would guard 1 to 5 . Now whos guarding prime Shaq and prime Kobe?! 🤦

  11. Dray getting ejected even in the hypothetical šŸ¤¦šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤£šŸ¤£ Jesus Christ.

But as a warriors fan I can tell yall Kobe taking that Steph matchup personally

  12. The only thing that matters here is what rules they are playing? If you aren’t allowed to man handle Steph and Klay and just let them rain 3s off of pick and rolls, math says 3 beat 2s. But if they can physically beat up GSW’s back court and KD…. This isn’t even a debate who wins. The combined offensive power on GSW was unreal in today’s game, but all 3 shrunk from physicality.

  13. everyone is saying lakers would definitely win because of shaq. i think people think too one dimensional. warriors would always double or even triple team shaq and live with the quite inefficient scorer that is kobe albeit also always a consistently high scorer, or the rest of that lakers squad. but its not gonna be shaq being a center on defense and letting the rest of the warriors squad go to him. oh good heavens no. its gonna be shaq always through out the entire series, gonna have to go up the 3 point line and guard steph or klay. always. either that or they are shooting open 3's. so definitely shaq cant go heavy mins and be effective especially on the 4th. he is gonna be too oxygen deprived to keep that dominance up. warriors will live with inefficient kobe being guarded by probably iggy, who btw was named finals mvp strictly because of his defense. so yea warriors are great at defense, and too many juggernaut offensive players for the lakers to keep up

  14. The thing is no matter how many 3’s golden state shoot shaq is still going to bring problems especially for the golden state bigs

  15. Here’s something that I’ll let people know: the only team that will put up a fight against the 2017 Kevin Durant Warriors would beat the 1972 Los Angeles Lakers, with arguably the greatest human to have ever played basketball, even in his old age , in Wilt Chamberlain.

There is literally no one on the 2001 Los Angeles Lakers who will be able to stop the onslaught of Steph Curry and Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson.

As we’ve seen with Kobe Bryant, when he didn’t have shack, he’s quite inefficient. Shaquille O’Neal would dominate offensively, but that death lineup of the Warriors will make him into instant buckets, essentially nullifying his defense.

The Warriors will be so fast that they would give Shaquille O’Neal a goddamn heart attack.

There’s a couple of excellent YouTube channels that talk about these various issues and how the game is evolved. The NBA in the 2000s were pretty inefficient and they would have no answer for a player like KD who can’t be stopped or Steph Curry where they have to meet him and guard him at the logo and chase him around at full speed .

Players like Derek Fisher will end up having a goddamn stroke, chasing the Warriors around.

And if we are talking about taking those teams as they were constructed at the time, not adjusting to different rules that were played during 2001 and 2017, 2001 Los Angeles Lakers were literally not built to handle a team like the 2017 Warriors.

I wish that the architect and fixer for those two franchises in Jerry West was around to settle the debate. He built those teams to win at those specific times. We have to put down our brand washing that mainstream media paints of our beloved teams, thinking that their time as the most dominant team in the league can translate past the error in which they were playing in my estimation, the only player that has ever played that would be equally dominant in any error of basketball is Wilt Chamberlain. Every other player, including Michael Jordan, would simply won’t be. Michael Jordan in today’s NBA, given how the teams were constructed and the factors that have been in the league. The last 8 to 9 years has a high chance of becoming another Russell Westbrook.

Let’s even go to coaching, whatever you think of Phil Jackson as on the Mount Rushmore coaches, Steve Kerr could be on the same Mount Rushmore.

We also have to understand that in this hypothetical situation, the Lakers won’t have a mysterious aura that they had during the shack and Kobe era. Steph Curry would equally have the same touch. One thing that will be a factor against the Los Angeles Lakers is which team would crack given the pressure of getting boat race by either a dominant performance behind Shaquille or Kobe or if Kevin and Steph and Klay go nuclear and blow them out by 40 points. Given what we now know about how those Lakers broke up, Kobe could go off on shack the way that Kobe went off on Dwight Howard. And since Shaquille is a very prideful, dude, I don’t know how well that would end.

Lastly, I like the Warriors chances with Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston.

Yes, I know that NBA players current informer are private people. They’re going to talk themselves sky high. But the best qualified debate in analysis of this possibility comes from various independent sports channels on YouTube. Much to the heartburn of older NBA fans who are in love with the 80s and 90s , not liking stuff, not liking Draymond and the three-point Revolution of the game, believe that those old styles could still carry a day in the new NBA. They’ve gotten blinded by highlights. If they actually watch the games from start to end, if the NBA allow for that to happen, it will be immediately apparent that they just couldn’t keep up. The game is night and day different.

This one goes to perhaps the most devastating team in league history: the 2017 Golden State Warriors.

I will put them up against any of your favorite teams of the 1980s, the 1990s, the 1960s and the only team that I feel that could match them although it would be hard for them would be the 1972 Golden State Warriors, solely because of Wilt, Chamberlain, and his individual ability to never get tired , stronger than Shaquille O’Neal, more talented than 99% of the players to ever play in the league the most physically gifted athlete the NBA has ever seen. That is what it will take for a team to even be in the door.

This does not take away the incredible careers and the height of that career of the 2001 Lakers in Shaq and Kobe. They are no less than top 20 players all time, many people will put them in their top seven. But just like a regular mountain feature, there’s a big giant difference Between all-time players playing equalizers like the system that Golden State was playing.

And to give the channel owner credit of his unusual Hall of Fame career, we can easily see a situation where he will never back down from Kobe Bryant, he would put the pressure up to 1 billion. Unlike the TV movie of the 2001 Laker season, I don’t see anybody on the Lakers bothering Kevin Durant especially when Steph Curry is sucking auction and out of the room. The pressure to even keep up with the scoring is going to make the Lakers have defensive lapses as well as offensive turnovers.

All that being said in this very lengthy comment, it’s not that the Lakers don’t have a chance. But that chance is to keep it close that allows for the ultimate clutch moments of the Lakers to emerge. I think the 2001 Lakers only clear advantage over the 2017 Warriors are there ability to pull ahead if there with striking distance and keep matching the Warriors shot for shot. The Warriors are either a team that’s going to wipe you out or will lose in close games. But I would never bet that would happen repeatedly.

  16. I like Draymond with his podcast and stuff but this dude should stop feeling so great about himself.

  17. Dray is always talking about the screen he would set to protect his guys, but what would Shaq do to him?? get real Dray. there's levels of toughness and he's not on shaq's

  18. 8:30 ā€œand you know what elseā€ā€¦.not really man. Why you say it like that? Were you cranking it to basketball?šŸ˜‚

  19. Draymond so delusional saying in 5 like what’s wrong with you if any thing
Your the reason they going to loose every one is going to guard some one expect you every one is leaving
    You alone

  20. Draymond has to realise that they, the Warriors, can't grab or hold in today's rules either, so not only can Steph and Klay run around untouched…. imagine Kobe playing with no one allowed to touch him as well. Kobe's gonna dominate and he'd be fine chucking up 3s.

Shaq's going for 50 on 20/25 shooting and 10/20 FTs after fouling out Draymond and whatever other big guy they throw at him. Shaq dominated other bigs that could bump and shove him on D, Shaq v undersized guys that aren't allowed to get physical….. BBQ CHICKEN!!!!!
The only negative for Shaq would be having to switch more often than he'd be used to, he would be a bit of liability on D…. but not any more than the guys that are guarding him would be. Shaq will score more than he concedes.

Too many people have blown smoke up Draymond's arse and it's made him extremely arrogant.

  21. Damn nobody here watched 01 shaq lol. Literally the most dominant single player in league history that year

  22. The Lakers win that matchup 4-1 at worst .. it wouldn't even be that competitive… GS never faced a team as defensively sound , talented and disciplined as that Lakers team

  23. Warriors would win this matchup. It would be competitive but peak Warriors was insane. Fitness levels increased (better nutrition, understanding the importance of sleep, workout techniques, etc). The Warriors would have ran the Lakers ragged. It's not a fair comparison to be honest. Coaching schemes also progressed a ton with a bigger emphasis on basketball IQ. One cannot crack an NBA roster anymore purely on athleticism. The systems today are so sophisticated.

And then there's the elephant in the room which is that 40% from 3, beats 50% from 2.
