[Marchand] Barkley, 61, sounded sincere in his comments Friday, but he has talked about retiring forever. The former goal was 60, which he blew by with a decade-long contract that approached Tony Romo’s $180 million territory. After next season, he will have seven years left on that deal.

ESPN, Amazon and NBC all have interest in Barkley, and Barkley said he has already talked to all of them.

Just last month, on ESPN Cleveland, he said he was open for business to talk about other offers. Now, he says he has changed his mind.

Maybe Barkley goes, but he is still going to be talking. Hard to see why he wouldn’t want to continue to make some more millions.

No matter when it happens, it will be a shitty day when the Inside the NBA guys disband, either by Chuck retiring or because of network issues. There are none like them across all sports.

Starting with Name and Age made this look like he died

  3. Currymvp2

How did it approach Romo’s contract? Romo is making 180 million in 10 years while Barkley is set to make 100 million in 10 years.

Then, there’s Tom Brady whose making 375 million in 10 years… sheesh

  4. here’s to hoping Barkley is publicly daddy-dicking Zaslav

can we get Ted Turner to come in with the instruments

  5. the_popeshat

This is Chuck sticking it to Turner for not getting a contract with the NBA. He is beating them to the punch before all the network deals get announced after the finals conclude. Very much in line with his comments and shots he was taking throughout the playoffs when Inside was still on TV.

I think he’ll stay in the media sphere via a podcast or something.

Maybe that’s just the copium talking lol.

  7. I don’t know… this sounded more sincere than any other times. 25 is also a good round number

Barkley is a big gambler still? He kinda needs the money.

  9. Objective-Nerve1827

Very sad TNT crew will be over 🤮

  10. itwas20yearsago2day

I thought Chuck was pretty much forced to keep working because of his gambling debt/problems.

Maybe they were just rumors idk

All because Adam Silver’s goblin ears heard one mean comment from Zaslav and threw a hissy fit, Silver needs to fix this and give tnt a deal

Tony Romo catching the opposite of strays

I love chuckie, but he’s clearly negotiating the deals with other networks by threatening to retire. Surprised no one has brought this up. World isn’t black and white.

I just always assumed he’d retire. Granted, it was before I realized he said he would retire for a decade. I was rooting for him to step down, he (and they) can’t do that show forever. This is the perfect out.

  15. rocket_beer

Imagine being a starter today and Chuck makes more than you 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

  16. QuarterBackis_toast

He can still be annoying and loud for subway commercials.

  17. 2020IsANightmare

He obviously doesn’t need the money, but he’s still walking away from a TON of money.

Google says he has a net worth of $60 million. He’ll find a way to survive, I believe, if he never works again.

But, he could make $20m/year. Not a single soul is going to feel sorry for Barkley. Charles isn’t showing up to soup kitchens if he stops working. His food stamp application will get denied.

Just saying that even for someone worth $60m, $20m/yr is a FUCKING METRIC SHIT TON of money!!

    > Hard to see why he wouldn’t want to continue to make some more millions.

…is it tho? Given he has plenty already, and at this point can go off and pursue any avenue (hobby, business, whatever) he wants?

  19. HardcoreKaraoke

Yeah I kind of figured this was more about negotiating and Chuck going out on his own terms. By saying this publicly and saying “don’t call me” you know he’s going to get calls and offers anyway. Someone is going to throw an absurd amount of money at him to talk him out of retirement when he was never really considering it anyway.

  20. DCJustSomeone

All that time he gonna spend with Henry. Happy for him. He is amazing and hilarious.

  21. buffalobill41

Still don’t believe it, he’s the best and he’s gonna get whatever he wants.

    >After next season, he will have seven years left on that deal.

If the NBA won’t continue with TNT…

I mean who is going to pay the rest of his contract?

    Is it still good?

  23. LetsgoImpact

His contract is with TNT, right?!If they don’t broadcast the NBA, what use is Sir Charles to them? They will probably hand him a buy out, so he can retire peacefully and do a podcast or something…

  24. MajinHoops

he could start a podcast or really anything and he’d kill it lol

  25. InTooDeep024

I hope he does retire. So tired of hearing him talk.

  26. hoops_n_politics

I think this is Charles showing loyalty to Ernie. The kernel of a segment which eventually grew into Inside the NBA was just Chuck and Ernie talking. I think what Charles is saying is, “Without Inside the NBA, I’m retiring. And there is no Inside the NBA without Ernie Johnson.”

Bravo to Chuck, he’s always put people ahead of profit .

  27. Ancient-Judge7462

Charles carries hard, I used to watch every nba broadcast on tnt and espn in the 2000s, when shaq only showed up on the highlights as a player. Back then inside was already hilarious as shit, the entertainment value vs the espn halftime shows made espn seem like a joke.

Not sure how irreplaceable Kenny and Ernie are but being from the same era, Kenny as the straightman may very well be just be as important as Charles. The work the production crew does can probably not be overstated as well. I cant see the same cast being as entertaining on an espn set, they really have some magic going on at that studio.

  28. B12Washingbeard

They can just start their own YouTube channel and do the same thing.

  29. Mystikal_Won

C-Ya!!!! As my dear friend always says, “Life is not an airport, it’s not necessary to announce your arrival or your departure, unless you think so much of yourself that your ego makes doing so becomes necessary.”

  30. Chucks a master negotiator. He’s always willing to walk away. I think if the right circumstances were out in front of him he’ll continue, but it’ll be in his terms.
