EP. 428 – Triple Dipping w/ Dan Savage – Orlando Magic Podcast
this is the sixthman show an Orlando Magic podcast with your hosts Luke Sylvia and Jonathan Osborne covering all things Magic Basketball by fans for fans go [Music] magic what’s going on Orlando Magic fans you guys are back with the six-man show today is June 17th 2024 Jonathan Osborne here as always and back from vacation in the new spot lukee Sylvia Luke what is going on uh still unpacking boxes and uh losing a week of that to Vacation you know bitter suweet coming back to to realizing we still have quite a bit to do as far as unbo you know unpacking stuff but it’s been good beach was good treated me well and the family well so all uh all is good on this front and I’m excited to uh get into more silly season conversation with you we’re going to be talking silly season stuff on this one some uh you know freeny rumors and they are simply just that rumors and speculation at this point where Dallas Celtics series is 3 to one as you’re listening to this on Monday that series could end as early as tonight so as early as tomorrow we could start hearing at least like Orlando Magic specific fre agency stuff and then we’re still just a couple of ways or a couple of weeks away from like the official start of NBA free agency but a little bit later in the episode we are joined by our good friend Dan Savage who works for the Orlando Magic over there Orlando magic.com the best in the game he joins obviously we recap this past season talk about the magic exceeding expectations about the playoff run the atmosphere in Orlando during the playoffs take a look at the free agency draft all that good stuff and as always you know we had to talk a little bit of Boy Meets World at the end with our our friend Dan but I just I love Dan he’s he’s just so easy to talk to so easygoing so chill and like go with the flow but also always gives great Insight you know he’s as close to this team as anybody is right like he’s he’s with this team every single day um and yeah just awesome conversation with Dan as always and appreciate him taking the time yeah he’s he’s incredible and uh to think it might have been my last Dan Savage official interview conversation on the six-man show so also something that was that’s uh that was definitely really just bitter to be honest there was no sweetness about that but uh but yeah shout out to him and uh and always being the man when it comes to sitting down with us giving us the time um and just like personally like super super nice and kind to me when I see him and um just casual conversation so he’s he’s incredible how are you doing with all that these days you know like every time we do something it’s like kind of like your last time potentially you know doing something things here sucks it sucks and I’m not going to cry again but it sucks and uh to avoid crying I’m keeping it short so that it is it is unfortunate and I do think about it every time I hop on here every time we talk with a guest whatever might be it’s it is awful but like I I just thought that maybe like because we had like the super emotional reveal like earlier in the offseason that like over time it would allow you to like slowly process it so that when we finally get to the end like maybe it won’t be so bad but maybe that’s not going to be the case at all maybe I misjudge that when it comes to stuff like this like I’m very emotional so like it like in general when it comes to stuff like this like big things changing oh yeah it’s uh it’s always like that for me and it’s it doesn’t matter how much I process i’ I’ve processed it and there’s there’s some good some bad right a lot of things I’ll miss but uh ultimately man yeah it uh it it blows but um but yeah no I’m I I am processing actively for sure but I guarantee you the final episode I will be keeping things pretty short and sweet because if I don’t there will be there will be tears for sure again and that was ridiculous now Harper is in preschool has she gotten to like VPK yet like have you gone like the VPK graduation yet oh uh no no so she’s like half days right now and like 3 days a week that’ll be coming soon though yeah for me that was like the most like I hadn’t had one of those in a long time of like a major sort of like life change like a big chapter in someone’s life like ending for me that was the most and I was like bro like this is not this is not okay like I was I was not doing well emotionally um when it comes to this and I don’t mean to keep talking about this but like I’ve just from the moment I got the text from you initially I’ve been slowly like processing that I’m I’m trying to do my best for the both of us to keep it together cuz like if we both lose it won’t be able to have a show you know what I mean so one of us has to try to you know keep it together but the you know whenever we don’t know when the final episode is um you know sometime probably in the next you know six to you know seven eight weeks I don’t know somewhere roughly in that ball park um you know it’ll it’ll probably be there and yeah there’ll be a time for all that but that time is not right now you know what time it is for it’s time for silly season so earlier uh this weekend Eric Pinkus of bleach report uh actually what was this this was Friday Eric pinkis of bleach report uh released an article labeled as 2024 NBA free agency educated guesses on potential early signings so he names a few things Paul George you know Max by the 76ers also Matt you know U Lori marinin stays in Utah Isaiah hartenstein to the Thunder three pretty juicy uh pieces in here about the Orlando Magic starting with Orlando ends the Splash Brothers era talking about Klay Thompson signing with the Orlando Magic uh this offseason Luke I want to just like name all three so that people can get like the full picture of just how crazy this would be and then we can talk about each specific piece so he talks about Klay Thompson potentially signing with the magic then the next piece is Magic get another shooter and this is talking about Malik monk signing with the magic and then this arguably I had not heard anything about this and this was probably the most jarring piece of this the magic reuniting with a familiar face says magic add depth with Tobias Harris so the magic adding Klay Thompson Malik Monk and Tobias Harris through free agency this off off season Luke what are your thoughts I I mean the Tobias Harris thing really threw me for a loop as it probably did everybody that one was the one that I was like whoa but aside from really just that the fact that he has the magic getting all of these guys it’s like there’s no shot that you get that you sign all of those guys For Better or Worse regardless of what you think of these guys if you think it would be awesome or if you think it would be absolutely terrible there’s just no way there’s no there’s no way that the magic can do all of this like it’s crazy to me and you know you you scroll down that that article and my heart broke a little bit because he you know had tus Jones going to San Antonio with his brother Trey so there’s that and then also hartenstein to OKC there’s been a lot of smoke about that lately and I really wouldn’t mind hartenstein in Orlando so there’s it is exciting because there’s people even considering tying these names to us like these are all like these are all good players these are all good players regardless of what you really think of them at this stage of their career or playoff performances or whatever this is stuff that we would have killed to be in the conversation for quite frankly any of these guys four or five years ago right like these are these are guys that names that you would like your team to be tied to just for the sake of like oh we’re relevant we finally are on the map now there’s lot of me that dismisses this because of the fact that Orlando just has cap space and they are just throwing people in Orlando just because Orlando has cap space and it’s probably the easiest thing to do but I mean this would be a ridiculous offseason and regardless of what you think of these players that would be a ridiculous offseason it just that would be mind-blowing to me yeah this is obviously the part of the offseason you like we talked about with with Dan that like agent are are using the leverage that they have for obviously you know teams are not having direct negotiations with these players you know you always hear about back Channel conversations and obviously you know players are aware of certain situations and and they’re talking to other players around the league but that’s where we’re at right now Klay Thompson probably like ideally does he want to stay in Golden State absolutely so he’s going to create any type of Leverage that he can whether it be legitimate or not to try to get golden state closer to where he wants to be financially for him to be able to stay there and finish out his career same thing with a guy like Malik monk right you could argue whether or not the kings were going to be able to pay him regardless but he’s trying to boost his value around the league he he wants multiple teams you know competing for you know the rights for him to play in their uniform so they’re going to be drumming up all this interest and and yes a lot of it makes sense like do the magic need shooting you know maybe they need some veterans or guys with championship experience sure and then you look at another guy like Tobias Harris who has history here obviously he’s done very well for himself financially since he’s left here when you look at all that like we are in the the part of the Season where agents are pushing their agendas like as much as they possibly can like looking at Klay Thompson pinkis has and any I don’t I don’t mean to make fun of pinkis his name but like literally every time I hear his pinkis I think of tingis Pingus every single time it’s the first thing that comes to mind has nothing to do with Eric pinkis it’s just I laugh every time I hear Pinkus because I think tingus Pingus you know all that kind of stuff so anyways I I’ll call this gentleman Eric Eric estimates clay going to the magic and again these are educated guesses he’s not saying this is for sure going to happen but a three-year 81.9 million contract which comes down to basically like 27 and some change per year for three years uh Malik monk I think it’s a a fouryear like8 86 million deal and then with Tobias Harris it’s a twoyear 16.9 million contract and the magic would have to you know renounce some guys rights and if they want to keep those guys like resign them to Deals like you know like Joe Eng Les terminate his team option for next year you could still resign him after the fact you know same thing with Mo Vagner if you wanted to save a little bit of money and you know bring him back at a little bit of a lower number you could do that as well so there’s some other you know mechanisms and things that the magic would have to do to make all of that work I come back to your line of thinking like is there a reality where Klay Thompson Malik Monk and Tobias Harris are all going to be convinced that the correct move is for those guys to move like to make the move to Orlando with everything that we have in place and we talked about patience with Dan and not jumping the gun or not hitting the NOS button a little bit too early this would be like putting everybody on like a SpaceX shuttle and catapulting this team into space like this would be pressing the gas so hard and for me it would feel like it’s too much too soon where yes do the magic need to make moves and press on the gas a little bit to get this bus rolling in the right direction a little bit faster of course but to me like this is is just way too much especially when we do have the questions with Klay Thompson of like where is he in terms of like a locker room guy at this point you know a guy that does seem like he’s gotten a little bit of bitter you a little bit bitter as he’s age and has dealt with a lot of the injuries Malik monk you know magic fans have been talking about Malik mon Malik monk for months um the Tobias Harris I don’t love it right but for that number $16.9 million you know basically eight and a half million a year just for two years for a guy that you know over the course of the last you know six years right at 48% from the floor and you know League average if not better from the three-point line and you know has history here you we talk about guys like Vu and Evan and and AG I’m a little bit less nostalgic for Tobias Harris I would have to admit I I don’t love that fit but getting a guy you know at you he’s I think just turned 31 years old who is capable of still being relatively efficient and a guy that I would expect to come off the bench especially at that figure I don’t know that I would hate signing Tobias Harris for a two-year deal at 8 and a half million per year yeah I mean that you get to those numbers it’s like why not why why wouldn’t you just do that right this like assuming that like Gary Harris is gone and marel is gone yeah and and at that juncture like you that’s not starter money right by any means so it’s not like you would feel the pressure to to play him right which is kind of what the Knicks battled with for a while with like Evan forier before being benched regardless what you think of that they hesitated because of the money they paid him uh to do that now you’re at a point with with the bias if you were paying him eight a year there’s that’s really low risk and low stress situation there so it’s not it doesn’t get me going by any means it doesn’t make like I’m I’m not turning my head at that at all I think that’s a fine like that’s a good number for Tobias and I think he might end up getting more than that so like and not necessarily with the magic so I wouldn’t mind that at all I wouldn’t hate that number um the other silly thing Jonathan unless you had another thing to add to that do you I was just going to say like even at $16.9 million I probably don’t want to do it like just because of O of the bad memories like I have better memory and some people are going to kill me for this because they always do anytime I say any think positive about these guys I have more positive me memories with Evan with V with ag because at least we saw them have a little bit of success you know going to the playoffs for a couple of years like when Tobias was here we were just completely awful and that Tobias Harris for ersan ilova Brandon Jennings deal is one of the wor deals in franchise history right but that still doesn’t change the fact that we were just mostly really really really bad when Tobias Harris was here you know all of our problems are going to get solved when the magic pick up Mario honia so oh my gosh is that where we’re going next Mario you aiming to return to the NBA yeah and there’s already been speculation about the magic would be a great fit so that’s one that I have to chew on for a while uh there’s a lot of a lot of scars that were left by Mario honia not panning out in Orlando yeah Mark Stein has reported that uh honia is is coming up you know in discussions for somebody that could make a return to the NBA I don’t even know what his stats have been like I don’t know any of that but I don’t really care to be honest with you 14 points per game in all but one season in Euro league 14 points per game last year 45% from three huh 45 right now I’m reading uh Phil’s article from Orlando Magic daily.com I’m sort of skimming through this here I’m I’m not seeing shooting splits but he did mention that he shot 45% from three in 33 Euro League games last year so maybe he’s found a little bit of the shooting stroke again which he completely lost you know here underneath Scott Skyles um um I think it was four 45.3 um in 33 games on 4.8 attempts I don’t have super positive feelings about Tobias Harris I have even less positive feelings about Mario honia even including his game winner in his summer league debut I I really just want to honestly it’s dumb and there’s not much logic but it’s like anything from Bad arrows of Magic Basketball I don’t really care for it I don’t care about the strides that they’ve made I don’t care about the value as much I just want to establish this identity that we’re building and without having to think about the identity we had a decade ago because it wasn’t good and I don’t want to go back and again like you know I it’s it’s sort of hypocritical to a certain extent with like you know Evan and V like those are both guys that if they were coming back for like cheap deals like it’s not happening with Vu because he’s making $20 million a year but like for example like if Evan forier comes back at you know $6 million a year like if he comes back at like the Joe Engles deal right like a one in one I’m gonna I’m gonna be stoked about that quite personally because I I still think the guys got a little bit in the tank but like Tobias and and Mario like I I love them when they were here but I just have like zero desire to revisit that time especially at least the 1819 and 1920 teams had moments of being fun those other teams were like never fun it was just miserable to watch all the time yeah um yeah I don’t share your sentiment Vu would be cool coming back uh in the sense of he’s coming back to retire here or as like the third Stringer Center vet presence would you rather have V or goo baz well Vu but okay like you know what I’m saying like and as much as I love Mo Vagner I would still say that at this point in their careers Vu is still better than Mo Vagner yeah that’s not a hot take yeah yeah like if V is your backup center you’re doing pretty well mhm I would do that I would do that in a heartbeat kill me for it go ahead I invite it yeah I don’t know um regardless for for the right money I’m not talking don’t bring him here on $2 million a year like God bless him love to him and his family you go get your bread my brother but you know we we we got to preserve some cap space for for pao and the boys here yeah anyway I don’t know that’s probably enough of silly season but but we’ve already talked about those guys those free agents a couple like whatever it was like a month ago and we’ll continue as we get closer as we get more smoke and whatever but yeah it’s it’s indeed Silly Season and we’ll we’ll see what happens yeah like the the clay one is like Tobias I just I don’t see that happening Malik obviously we’ve talked about like that would be awesome you get Malik and Klay Thompson and like you said if I’m walking through Publix and I get that Malik Monk and like Klay Thompson notifications back to back like I’m running up and down the aisles like at that point you know you just get that shot of adrenaline and then you whenever like your team signs somebody unless you really don’t like that player your mind usually goes to like okay what is the best case scenario for this panning out in this situation and that’s what gets you excited but I I just don’t think I could get behind like paying Klay Thompson $27 million a year at this point in his career especially not for three years two years like maybe I could get there especially if it was like a one in one he’s not he’s definitely not going to do that at this point but I just I don’t know that I can get to giving Klay Thompson $27 million a year at this point in in the game for for the not so young man anymore right all right um really I mean slow week in terms of Orlando Magic news um as you listen to this we’re a week and a half away from the draft so that’s really what we’re going to be looking forward to the draft coming up on um the what is it the 26th and 27th if I’m not mistaken so uh looking forward to that actually let me pull that up right now make sure the NBA draft is the 26th and 27th this year yeah the 26th and 27th now they’re splitting up the the first and second round there Luke I haven’t gotten your take on that real quick just breaking up the draft into two days it’s a bad year to ask me because I just don’t care about the draft this year at all but uh I don’t care like I and the first round is is slated to be three hours still on ESPN television so they’re just going to make it more stories and whatever but uh yeah I whatever man I as a magic fan especially I don’t care because it’s like I’m I’m just here for the first round anyway but the fact that you’ve still got to stick around for three hours is insane so I don’t love that it’s all for money it’s what it always will be and ratings and trying up the quality production like who cares man I don’t care about the storytelling and all that like I I just want to see who gets picked save me everything else but whatever so yeah I don’t I don’t really have too much of a stance on it being broken up into two days I don’t love the three-hour thing for one round um yeah that’s really my only takes on it to be honest all right we’re going to get to our uh interview with Dan Savage in just a minute here I do want to let you know we did have some technical difficulties with Luke uh during this interview so you see him sort of like come in and out at different you know uh points of that interview there news Dan Savage of Orlando magic.com Dan first of all happy Father’s Day uh you got a little one on the way here I know that you’ve uh you know announce that on your your social media accounts but got to be getting uh little little nervous a little little excited it should be uh you know sometime now right yeah excited nervous all the above you know had the baby shower uh last weekend had a lot of friends and family out so it was great to feel that support but uh as you guys know you know as you come down this final stretch there is a wide array of emotions of like am I ready to to keep another thing alive and so uh you know it’s mentally prepping myself for that you know trying to watch a lot of tutorials that’ll prove meaningless the second something happens so uh so we’ll see how it goes I did do a lot of assembling this weekend so strollers assembled cribs assembled all that stuff’s good so as ready as I could be this time of year you have like you gotta start getting the hospital bag packed everything like that H how far out are we now Dan uh we are just about almost exactly actually tomorrow will be two months to the day um out from the expected due date so we mid August baby is expected little baby Savage running around may maybe a little late August birthday you know a little August 25th August what’s your Luke 29th 29th maybe somewhere around there you know two good dates to pick from buy me some extra time you know pre parenting so yeah I’m all for it my wife on the other hand you know carrying a child through uh all of July and August in Florida you know maybe ready to to to get this one out right that’s we so when we were pregnant with with Cole not Cole Anthony Cole my child uh when we were pregnant with Cole we the Lauren was like two months maybe a little less than that from the expected due date and she insisted I will admit she well she needs to admit this and she does she insisted to go to a Gator game with me in August and even though it was at night it’s Florida and it was like you know 80 5 Dees whatever Plus and so she she like you’re crammed in there at seats at at at Ben Hill Griffin and yeah she she regretted it pretty soon after so that’s my word of advice don’t go to any sporting events where you’re in close cors with people uh even if your wife encourages you just because she she wants you to be able to go it’s the wrong answer so that that was my experience about two months out from due dat I’ll definitely keep that in mind yeah Dan it’s been uh been about almost a year now since we had you on the show you know usually we we meet with you about you know this time each season G give you a little bit of a break obviously this season was a little bit longer and we all enjoyed that but before we have you know team employees on we’re like let’s give these guys a little bit of a of a break you know sort of wind down from the season before we have them you know start doing content stuff again but Dan um really just wanted to to get your thoughts you know last year I know that a lot of us had you know sort of tempered expectations going into the season and uh magic outperformed all everyone’s expectations OB obvously with the N game win streak early on in the year picked up a lot of you know wins in in February March and and then April at the end there um what just you sort of being with the team on a daily day like day-by-day basis what was that like for you like seeing this team improve so much and exceed expectations like on like right in front of you yeah I mean because you look at the year prior they had made such a big jump and you’re like in your head mentally you’re like it’s hard to duplicate that two seasons in a row where you make a big big double digit win jump improving the Eastern Conference and as you’re going through the course of the season and you’re seeing the way that this internal development went the way that Moses touched these guys the way this team’s coming together and all the pieces were starting to fit uh you start to believe like okay you know play-ins uh definitely in in play and then as the season’s going on you’re like all right playoffs are absolutely in play so it was special from the standpoint that you know they did it organically uh with growth with their key pieces and guys that they want to build around making big strides that’s what you want to see because if it’s ancillary pieces aging guys aging veterans that are that are playing keys for your franchise you know that’s going to be a limited return and to see you know arguably the Magic’s most three most impactful players to be 22 years old or younger making such significant strides uh you know speaks a lot to what the potential of this group could be and I think the turning point for me was kind of that West Coast trip right at the beginning of the new year when this team was out there in Sacramento and went to double overtime and then come back from that one with so many guys sick uh so many guys injured and you know the way the team showed up believed and beat the defending Champion Denver Nuggets in their house at the end of a road trip with that altitude with that sickness I mean everybody had myself included I was like you know when they went down early I’m like all right like let’s just pack up go home and this team had none of that you know paa had a sensational his second triple double of the of his career in that one and uh yeah they’re they’re tougher than I am because they were out there battling got it done and when they did that I was like all right this team is for real um they can definitely earn a playoff spot and the way they went about that throughout the course of the season was just so impressive and then fast forward you know sort of the last couple weeks of the season with four or five games to go like they still had a real shot at the the two seed in the Eastern Conference and then you know had the loss to Charlotte had the loss to Houston and then Milwaukee Philadelphia and then to finally get that one at the end against Milwaukee just what sort of impressed you during that stretch because they again could have got as high as the two seed you’ll start losing and then game 82 backs her up against the wall win or you’re you’re going to the playin game s what impressed you from from this young team like sort of during that stretch I would say the most impressive part is there was never any Panic um you know because as you’re going through a few of those losses there it could be easy to say oh my gosh you know we’re going to fall into the play in or or whatever try to you know overcompensate they never did that there was a levelness to it there was a this is not acceptable um and then they found a way at home to to get the job done which they had throughout so much of the course of the year and even to the postseason just found a way to get things done at home which is very impressive about this group I think the biggest takeaway for me at the end of the season was there’s some great learning lessons and guys reflected back on that either at the end of the regular season or during their exit interview process it’s like you know home Court’s so important uh we can’t let that one slip in Charlotte you know that was the big opportunity game and then I think what players started to realize because this is our only you know first second go round of it for some of these guys and then you know while it actually matters maybe the first you know true go around at the end of the season is you start to forget that even teams that don’t have that much to play for like Houston when you’re there it’s their home finale like those guys are are want to go out with the right taste in their mouth to their home fans uh when you go to Milwaukee and you have to play you know in that home crowd’s finale like that’s a big game as well so you know those things are at stake for teams at the end of the season that you know maybe you don’t necessarily have circled in that type of way and that’s why you know games early in the season matter and when you have chances against inferior opponents towards the end of the season you have to capitalize yeah absolutely fast forward a little bit to to the playoff series right uh you mentioned how impress you know how important homec court advantage is those Cleveland crowds seemed really crazy um the Orlando crowds were really just as impressive I’ve been uh you know been able to go to the the last you know couple of playoff runs 2019 and this Year and have never heard that building quite as loud but Dan I wanted to ask you like in your opinion which was like the more intense atmosphere was it in Cleveland or or what did you think about the Orlando crowds I I thought the Orlando crowds from start to finish were so good like Cleveland had their moments uh you know especially but it was I mean it was two good fan bases that I mean that’s what the NBA wants where you’re like all right these crowds are going blow for blow these teams are going blow for blow uh you know you sense some panic in that Cleveland crowd in game seven and you know fortunately with the way the magic played at home there were never those moments you know the C crowd was really into it that game three in Orlando was you know was insane you could taste how hungry the Orlando faithful was and I think that was probably maybe the most impressive crowd of the the whole playoff um series there between the magic and the Cavs was that you know game three uh crowd at Kia Center was just so so loud and so locked in so um you know I’d probably point to that as the the most impressive crowd and you know they helped the magic all year uh going 17-0 against you know sub 500 teams at Kia Center um you know that speaks to not only the team’s professional approach to these games but the way the crowd was behind them all year yeah the the Orlando crowds were absolutely incredible games three game four game six and yeah you’re up 18 in in that first half in Cleveland that game seven hoping that you’re able to to pull that out but ultimately they weren’t Dan but what do you think you know we’ve talked about the homec court advantage but besides that what do you think this team is going to take from that playoff series and sort of draw from that moving forward we know hopefully going in next regular season they’re going to realize just how much every single game of those 82 games matter because you know we hear all the time that like the regular season doesn’t matter anymore well for this young team that was evidence that well the regular season does matter in every game of the regular season matter so what do you expect this team to take from this playoff series moving forward yeah as a whole it’s a a bit what you alluded to uh the fact that you know you got to win those games uh early in the season um on the road that you know you’re playing an opponent you should win you can’t let any of those slips uh and I think you know the other big takeaway is just when you get to the to the postseason the atmosphere is different and you can explain that to to players until you see walk out there for the first time you see all those matching t-shirts uh you see the crowd from the jump intro videos are more hyped until you experience that it’s hard so I think as a team uh there’s a lot of that and then from the individual player basis look you know a lot of these games you know when you go to to watch a pre- scout um you know they they highlight a few things the other team does um you know they go over a few of their top plays that they run but it’s really quick it’s you know on a backtack sometime there’s only so much you can get into with your team of what the other team does when you go to a playoff series it’s every little detail of what a player likes and it’s diving deep and as a player you learn what the league thinks about you the way the team guards you what they try to take away and so I think from a player by player basis it’s so valuable especially as a young player to go through it because then you could see okay this is how a team is going to guard me um when I’m going against them in in a playoff series and these are the counters I need to develop and I think for an Orlando Magic team going against a team that arguably takes away its biggest strength is so valuable because the magic had to develop counters to that look it’s no secret the Magic’s big weapon is getting to the rim scoring at the rack uh what is Cleveland do well defend at The Rim you know prevent teams from getting to the rack limiting fouls and so I think for the magic as a whole uh you know they developed a lot of counters to that and you know arguably uh could have had a much easier time against some of the other opponents so uh getting to experience that against a veteran Cleveland team with some you know valuable guys who’ve had deep playoff runs uh I think will go a long way for them where we are at this point in the summer you know the finals looks like they’re going to be wrapping up any day now we about a week and a half out from the draft and then as soon as the finals end you know teams can start negotiating with their own free agents and two weeks from today teams can start negotiating with other free agents without getting into specifics you know we we know that you can’t really get into a lot of that but just speaking generally what do you expect the magic to do in in free agency to help improve this team moving in next year yeah I think the crazy part about this offseason is that there’s so many directions it can go you know a lot of times you know when I’m doing this time of year even if I can’t say it you know I have a pretty good idea of how the offseason will go and at this juncture I just think there’s so many different paths the magic could go down um from you know different trade opportunities to signings to um focusing in on internal growth I think that’s the big Advantage they have is um they have a lot of paths available to them and there’s no need to rush with their arguably three best players being 22 years or or younger because the last thing you want to do is at this stage of The Game Force it we’ve seen other franchises across the NBA take big swings and it looks like the whole Future’s ahead of them they you know had a successful playoff run they make a big swing they devoid themselves of assets and the next thing you know they’re on the list of teams that are stuck and are looking to blow things up and you know there’s the League’s been riddled with those teams recently and so the last thing you want to do is be one of those teams and the beneficial part of you know a Jeff welman Le regime is you know that guy’s going to be as detailed as ever is going to focus on every possible approach and if he makes a move it’s going to be the right one for this franchise so I think the tough part is if you’re on that analytics staff man you’re burning the midnight oil right now between the drafts uh you know different you know runs there because they not only you know plan for where they’ll be picking at you know 18 and in the second round but they also do different planning for if they make a trade up if they make a trade back so those guys are prepared for every possible scenario and it’s like that for free agency too you know they have a long list of guys that they might be interested in how they would fit so you know when the offseason begins those guys are are just beginning their deep work so you see those guys burning the midnight oil right now and uh you know they’re so prepared and and Jeff will have every you know possible analytic at his disposal uh as he makes these decisions there’s not many people that have been around the team as much as you Dan and specifically this iteration of the magic we always talk like the big talking point the magic is the team chemistry do these guys really love each other this way how important is it everything right and the answer is we know it’s important right we know this is special at this point that’s been established how critical is it going into this off season when you talk you know when you’re talking draft free agency periods to keep that continuity and keep that chemistry in mind we’ve had this conversation like Jonathan and Kevin and myself about like oh I would I would be comfortable dealing with this dealing this guy because he doesn’t maybe mess with the chemistry as much like that seems to be very Centric um that whole just talk about chemistry and and blowing maybe messing it up is that at the Forefront of your mind and and would you say that it it could be at the Forefront the front office’s mind as well yeah I think there are two things at the Forefront of my mind when making any move and we already know from the type of guys that Jeff has brought in whether it be with John Hammond as his GM or now Anthony Parker as his GM is they going to be High character guys you know we have not seen a guy come through where you’re like I don’t know about this guy like you know he seems to bet on the people first and and that’s like the number one indicator and then like what they are as a basketball player is right there they’re kind of in lock step so you know it’s it’s funny I don’t think about that as much because I know Jeff it’s already at the Forefront of his mind and the other thing that I kind of keep in mind when I see these names and different hypothetical you know players brought up is look the magic have a superpower one you know it’s getting to the rim on offense and then two it’s being a top-notch defensive team so as I look at moves there’s two schools of thoughts with this one is you have so many top-notch Defenders you can compensate for a poor Defender right it’s like okay we have all these other guys if we get one guy who’s not the greatest Defender it doesn’t matter as much because we have other guys that could cover them up you know I kind of look at it from the lens of this team is so good defensively we’ve seen it work we’ve seen it translate to the playoffs do you really want to add a guy unless his offense is so off the charts where it’s like okay like this is no brainer but do you really want to add a guy with you know with good offense if his defense is either non-existent or you know he’s not bought in on that end and I’m not sure that you know me personally that that I would do that you know full disclaimer that’s you know my opinion um because I just think that the magic superpower is working it’s developed everybody’s bought in on that end of the floor and we’ve seen it lead to successful runs so at the Forefront of my mind is you know I kind of want two-way players uh guys that play hard on both ends and have the ability to defend because the Magic’s defensive versus ility has proven it can win them games Dan you you made a great point about you know we’ve seen a lot of teams that maybe hit the gas a little too early like they you know they hit the NOS button a little bit too early like in the first fast and furious you know Paul Walker hits the NOS button a little too early and then V diesel just passes by him you know good old Don theto uh a guy that has followed the league and is close to the league as you are what are your thoughts on like is is it possible for a team to be too patient yeah I mean because cap space doesn’t last forever either you know on the flip side like you know paa’s eventually going to get paid fr’s you know be coming up for a contract Jaylen you know you could go down the line of of different guys so you get this window where you know you can add valuable high-end pieces to this young core and so you know on the on the flip side of that you can’t be you know overly patient and let that window pass you by either so it it really is a tough balancing act because like the worst thing you could do is deo is is hit that NS button and then you’re devoid of assets um you know you have a guy that maybe doesn’t fit is now on a bad contract and you could look across the league we’ve seen a few times this season like there are players who you thought like two years ago you would give up a fortune for and now like nobody’s trading for them and it’s like what do what do this teams do do they just like stick with it and stick in playin status or do they you know they can’t add anything they’re you know over the cap so that’s that’s to me the worst thing and then you know behind that is you you at some point have to take advantage of your window it’s kind of like the same thing in the NFL with when you have a rookie quarterback and he’s playing on that salary you have to try to add pieces to it too so um that’s why I think Jeff and his team and AP will be aggressively going over things to either look at this off season you know opportunities that they think will present themselves at the deadline next year and and next offseason because that’s kind of the big window where you have some opportunity before those other contracts start hitting in place considering everything the way that the team overperformed this past season obviously the the draft pick that they have the potential to use maybe they might move that you know at 18 there and all the capital that they have going into a free agency what do you think like the appropriate expectation should be for this magic team moving into next season yeah I think it is building you know picking up where you left off because it’s hard to say like exactly what seating will look like until you see what other teams doing the draft what other teams do in free agency um look the Eastern Conference wasn’t healthy entirely either you know you’re going to have Giannis set play presumably you’re gonna have embiid in play as presumably and those guys can be big factors in the in the conference as well and so you know who would have known at this time last year that you know Dame would be traded to Milwaukee Drew holiday would end up you know playing for the Celtics uh you know they it’s so hard at this time of year but I think I want to see that you know guys individually are are continuing their internal growth I think that’s that’s big that’s in Paramount for this team arguably more important than anything because if if Pao continues to take another step if fron continues to take another step if ji stays healthy and continues to grow into the Menace that he is if uh you know jaylen’s continuing to stay healthy and progressing if AB if jet you know take steps uh the outside stuff isn’t necessarily nearly as important as what could go on here and so if they’re able to do that and continue to take those steps I think the rest of it takes care of theel as a team because we already know they’re made up of the right dudes and and they have the right approach defensively so as long as they pick up where they left off you know and keep that same mindset I’m very confident in where this group will go which of those pieces are you most excited to see pan out I think right now uh just because they’ve been in there all summer I’m really excited to see what ab and Jet bring to the table I think that’s they’re almost like two free agent pieces in themselves because jet spent so much time in the g-league uh when you talk about what do the magic need you know a lot of the skill set that he has is is so fitting I mean a great shooter can create a little bit and you know has the size to to be a factor defensively he’ll still have to prove that at the NBA level and then AB I mean you know that guy’s a dog we saw it in in pieces last last season in stretches uh he can flip a game on its head and when you consider you have defensive weapons like ab jayen and ji at your disposal that’s an that’s a nightmare for opposing teams because those are three guys that are not just like have Elite defensive traits like they bring it they have the mindset to do it in a night in Night Out basis they don’t take games off defensively so uh those two guys I’m really excited about just because I think they have the right approach to the offseason they’ve been in there non-stop they’re working on their aspects of the game and they have a long list of film of either whether it be at the NBA level or g-league level of the things they need to work on working closely with the magic staff so like you talk about free agency draft like those are two new pieces right there that I think could be a big factor for the magic next season your words didn’t say it but your face said something I know something you don’t know and that does get me a little uh excited Dan now I want to Pivot to I know you and me one of the things that we look forward to the most when we get together to do these is we’ll talk a little Boy Meets World so for those of you that uh are uncultured and don’t love Boy Meets World first of all you need to go and watch it and it’ll it’ll change your life or you can just you know fast forward a little bit turn turn this episode off whatever it is that you want to do first thing that I want to talk about and we haven’t had the opportunity to talk about this on the podcast is that last summer fall you myself and our friend comron we were all supposed to go to the live pod Meets World pod Meets World is the a rewatch podcast of of Boy Meets World from three of the the main characters of the show uh Sean toena Eric or better known as their their real names Ryder Strong Danielle fishell and will B Ferell we planed to go see this uh you know live podcast together and I was at ’90s con I was actually at 90s con to to meet Danielle offishal and to to meet William Daniels and I meet a magic fan in line while I’m waiting to meet Bill Daniels and we start talking you know we’re talking about the magic and then we’re talking about the live show I’m like oh yeah I can’t wait to go to that on Monday and he’s like no it’s Sunday I’m like no it’s definitely Monday like I I made plans to go with my buddies Dan and he’s like no man I promise you like I’m trying to sell tickets to that it’s Sunday so uh I ended up not being able to go to that and I know that that Dan and comron you guys went and had a great time but uh I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to forgive myself for messing that up yeah I mean you know it’s a nice way of saying you stood us up uh no no legitimately because like we do the Pod every Sunday regardless if there’s a hurricane if my house is on fire whatever like we have to get the Pod done and it was one of those things were like it just there’s no way that I could have you know I gotten out of this is the wrong word um but there it was just one of those situations where I couldn’t do anything and I honestly was heartbroken I was looking forward to hanging out with you and and comron and and seeing the show obvious I paid money for it I and I just I lost that money on that ticket so it it is what it is but um yeah I can’t apologize enough for that that was so unfortunate now the wild part about that for me was you know I consider myself a Big Boy Meets World fan and then you go go to something like that and you’re like I am not in this s tier a tier of of que Meat World fans like the costumes people came with the the subtle like things I’m like man I am I am not at that level yeah so it it was cool to experience you know they they made it fun they had a lot of hidden gems in in it and you know as a Die Hard fan of something it’s you could appreciate it but yeah it I thought I was a big fan of boy me world knew a lot of trivia and then like I was around those people I’m like you know it’s kind of like if you thought yourself a big magic fan and then you know you sit in the six-man show fan base area and it’s like okay these guys know a lot more than me it’s like if you took somebody off of like you know just a subtle like magic Facebook group or something and plugged them into the six-man show section like not the same level you know just knowing all the cap numbers knowing all the you know exact guys who you could add without hitting a certain tier or apron like you know you guys have that knowledge not everybody necessarily has it that’s how I felt at at The Boy Meets World level so you’re you’re currently going through your own rewatch like what number rewatch is this for you and like where are you right now in this current rewatch good question uh I don’t know what the number is but like I always fall asleep with the TV on and so but I can’t fall asleep to live TV or stuff I haven’t seen before because then I’ll be trying to stay up to see what’ll happen so I put on shows that I know inside and out and usually I’m asleep by the end of the theme song at least that’s that’s what my wife says so um it’s a very slow rewatch because I like you know put it on and then I’ll try to like pick up where I actually fell asleep and left off but I’m uh right at the start of the college year so I think it’s like season five is where I’m at currently so it’s hard to watch a show like 5 minutes at a time like that like you turn it on you fall asleep and you got to find out where you were the the College Years I think anybody that’s watched the show at least a couple of times realizes that like you know three four and five those seasons are really like the the the prime of the show and then six and seven it kind of like limps to the finish line so much like sometimes I’ll get in the College Years and I I won’t even finish I’ll just go back and start back at at season one and and you know watch all the way through uh through season five but yeah right now um I I’m doing my best to like my rewatch coincides with like pod Meets World so I think they the last I check because they started doing quite a few episodes to like fill the rest of their season out um but somewhere like towards the end of of of season four be get before they sort of get into to senior year there and it’s so much fun listening to that podcast because like you learn things that you never knew before and then I’m I I’ll watch a show and then I’ll hear them talk about it and I realize there’s something that I’ll miss so I’ll go back and and rewatch it again so I really really enjoyed that but um every time we have you on the show you and I do a little bit of a Boy Meets World trivia I think I think this is your third time on the show if I’m not mistaken I think we sort of switched back and forth who does the trivia so this time I thought it would be fun if both of us you know do a little bit of trivia do you want to go ahead and start us off all right I’ll jump up with this one because it’s kind of top top of mind uh with with this era for Sean Hunter you know Boy Meets World had some slips with uh with continuity in the show um you know over the course of the show uh sha had a few perhaps different siblings so how many siblings did Sean have get mentioned over the course of the show and what were their names I think it’s three I think it’s Stacy Eddie and Jack bam yes you are you are one for one my friend and then also at this this point uh of the series we we learned a valuable lesson about Tanga she is very committed to Corey uh she passes up an opportunity to go to Yale in fact to to go with Corey uh to Penbrook uh upon first meeting Rachel we also learn that she has given up a college opportunity to a different school to attend P Penbrook with her boyfriend who as we first meet the character she is leaving which university did she turn down to go to Penbrook to be with I have no idea this is is going to be wrong I’m going to say Harvard nope you know Boy Meets World kept it simple and they ran Yale back twice so we my God we have two girls who just gave up Yale to to go with their boyfriends and they were one for two kind of like you were there uh you know hit one missed one uh but uh yeah I I don’t know if they got like permission from Yale to use their name and they just like you know what we’re going to milk this for everything it’s worth because we had two girls do exactly the same thing okay so so I’m one for two all right so for you Dan U after Eric graduates high school you know realizes he doesn’t get into college he and Corey decide to go on on this you know Summer cross country road trip anyway and the the place that they stop before heading home is home of the largest the world’s largest blank fill in the blank yogurt cup okay for bonus points When Corey goes to the parade everybody’s putting on goggles to protect themselves from what oh the sprinkles from sprinkles very good very good okay and then the next one that I have for you is um on Corey into pangga’s honeymoon what um trade does does Corey pick up and and try to make a living on the island uh if I believe correctly because I’m not quite there yet he is carving coconuts uh to which to which his brother Eric comes and slides in a few extra and You could argue he is uh more talented at carving the Coconuts than than Corey is the the face is just so absolutely so good um that that’s all I got for you this time a little a little bit of Boy Meets World trivia um you got me on the on the Yale thing I felt like I was doing pretty good the last couple of times that that we did trivia but that was that was definitely a good one but again the the College Years are are not my strong suit like I feel like especially again Seasons like two three four and five sometimes I feel like I can go line for line and the best part about that show is like I’ve seen it so many of those episodes hundreds of times and I still laugh at all the the stupid joke so uh Dan I know that Luke really doesn’t appreciate when we when we do this Boy Meets World trivia I know there are probably some fans that don’t really care for it either this is one of those things that that’s just for me and you whenever you come on the show here but Dan a as always man can’t thank you enough for for taking the time looking forward to seeing you at at Magic games uh coming up here I mean we got like four more months until that point but uh by that point you know you’ll have a a new little bundle of joy there and I know that we’re all you know wishing you and and Mom and the and the new baby well man so again just thanks for taking the time always appreciate it no no I appreciate having you and let it be known that with that yell one when uh when that when I saw that come up I was like huh I didn’t realize that and I was like you know what I’m putting that in the phone and I’m saving that for the next time I’m on the show which fortunately it was like four days later so it it worked out perfect it worked out well thanks Dan thanks so so much a big thank you again to our guy Dan Savage always a pleasure always fun talking to Dan and of course you know I love it when I get to talk a little bit about boy me twil because Luke refuses to watch it and I can’t talk to him about it but I’ve had listeners that have heard me talk about boy me t with Dan and then went and watched it and told me that it is one of the best shows ever so if you’re curious at all you know if you been thinking about you know boy me swi has been on your mind for a long time and you’re struggling with that decision I hope that made it a little bit easier for you um but you know we gave some spoilers away you know in in that regard so I do apologize but yeah always good talk to Dan Luke yeah like I said earlier shout out to Dan um and all the Insight that he brings and for being so generous with the show so shout out again to him and uh hope you guys enjoyed it and you and uh Dan had some you know off camera stuff talk about new Suna Beach both you very well vers in the you know culinary offerings so like if I was a listener and I’m going to new Beach like give me like your top three places that you got to hit new samna Beach uh yeah so I am really uh partial to the condo even that we stay at it’s called the Sandpiper and they’ve got you know the the pool all the the chairs which I found out recently uh not all the chairs have umbrellas at all these condos and new smyna um you’re supposed to provide your own I guess I don’t know but but the Sandpiper they’ve even got everything down to that um you’re within like like 10 minutes of everywhere so at that rate an ad for the Sandpiper it might be I don’t know who knows I’ll talk about it with you um but uh but yeah so that that would be the first recommendation or not really that’s one of the recommendations monise you got to hit that spot for sure um it’s a French bakery they’ve got really incredible pastries it’s not just pastries like I got something called a success cookie which is what I always get and it’s essentially like cookie and I think it’s like sugar cookie I don’t really know to be honest what’s important what’s important here is the icing and the icing is in the middle then there’s another cookie and then there’s icing on top and it’s chocolate and it’s incredible uh and absolutely diabetes um something like that so sweet it like makes your jaw hurt yeah it’s so good and um they got a lot of other really good ones as well all my family likes different stuff and so there’s a lot to find for each for everybody um sonappa Grill is like a you know a date night type Place expensive is um not expensive expensive relatively speaking and like you know steaks all that kind of stuff the garlic is another place similar in that regard they have like a Char grilled with a lot of their stuff with their Grill top they use and um and so that’s really awesome um JB’s Fish Camp is another one one Dan brought that up when we were talking that’s like an outside you can wear a swimsuit there they’ve got like you know the dock and usually music all that’s my kind of vibe the long like bar tables for like long bars uh or boo like I guess bar Booth type and things like wooden tables um benches on either side really great for you know families and all that kind of stuff when we used to go like 45 deep to new samna um with family that’s where we would we would go there all the time because it’s just super casual and awesome um and then also you can always hit up some putt putt out there for my family and I we always did like Pirates Cove or whatever else there’s like some they’re like 30 minutes away because there those are more so Daytona um but still still uh hitable for sure so yeah how are your little ones with with mini golf cuz mine were into it for approximately 5 seconds and then they were over you know never never lasts long we did do a movie uh went and saw inside out too how was that it my kids want to see that yeah we enjoyed awesome Harper Harper actually sat through the whole thing um which was impressive to me she’s like four months away from being four but she was locked in and um loves inside out one she met Joy at Disney so she you know inside out too she was all a Bor for sure and especially in a theater with popcorn and chicken tenders and whatever else so yeah it was uh that was a cool experience for sure but now all she wants to do is watch inside out one on Disney plus Avery tricked me into bringing her to see Spider-Man no way home like the one with the Andrew Garfield Toby McGuire like all that kind of stuff so I brought her you got her a big old uh you know slurpie type of icy thing got her popcorn got her you know Peanut M&M’s the second the snacks were gone she’s like all right I’m ready to leave and we’re like 20 minutes into the movie and I was like can we just like you know like 20 minutes in there’s still like two hours left in that movie so I was like okay we’re we’re just leaving like we spent $60 on snacks I could have got her for $5 at 7-Eleven you know so now that was a couple years ago now she’s a bit older and they’re actually starting to to sit through movies so I’m going to try to make it out to to see inside out too sometime this week all right that’s enough random nonsense I think at the end of this pod we’ll go ahead and and wrap this one up for Luke Sylvia and again a big shout out to Dan Savage thanks for joining the show Jonathan Osborne here you all have been listening to the six-man show and we will catch you guys next time see you thanks for
