I find it very interesting. Instead of trying to get the guys to play desperate – he’s opted to try and have them play loose and free. Not typically what you’d expect.

Disclaimer: I like Joe.
That being said, if they win he’ll be praised for the approach.
If they lose, he’ll be bashed for it. (Not my opinion but what I think would happen)

I think it’s good because during game 4 they felt depasrte like they had to win, but for the mavericks they felt free basically. So him telling them to have fun and not be desperate I think is a good mindset
TotallyNotGlenDavis
I interpret it more as “do what we’ve done the whole season” instead of overthinking it and letting the nerves take control.
bootyholebrown69
It doesn’t really matter. These guys have played in countless playoff games
They just gotta go out there and play the basketball we’ve seen all season.

I like this mindset. I think treating the next game at the end of the world is a mistake. It’s not like the Celtics are in total control of the result, as much as we like to think it, Dallas will have a day in who wins tomorrow. If you treat this game like it’s do or die, what happens if you lose? It’s not the end of our season and we’ve now succeeded in instilling a giant psychological defeat upon ourselves. The series isn’t over with a loss and we will need to regroup and try to win game 6.

We should play our style of ball and not panic ball like a lot of people think we should be.
hoopbag33
Well getting super tense, fearful, and turning into an iso no ball movement shell isn’t working so sure why not
N_A_T_E_G
Unique approach for sure , let’s see if works
leemski
We’ll see how it works out, they were saying that they felt tense and put too much pressure on the last game. Everyone thinks the Kobe mentality is the only option, but these guys have been in worse scenarios than this

Let’s be honest they all probably let out a sign of relief that Brothers isn’t going to be on the court with the incompetent or corrupt, take your pick, Capers(but doing replay?).

The coach should know what the team needs to hear. Sounds like this team needs to be calmed down, reminded to keep a cool head, and that the weight of the world isn’t on their shoulders; they just need to play their game, their way, however long it takes.
We’ve seen that they play better when they’re not frantic. Not every championship approach is a DO OR DIE mentality. Trust Joe.
WeHave200Couches
Joe knows they win by the numbers and has been great about teaching the team to stay grounded and trust the formula. This is what this team needs, instead of spiraling into performance anxiety which has always been the case. If you’re in this thread actively preaching against this, you are part of the problem.

I take it as “don’t play tight. Just play our game and we will be good. Technically up 3-1 there is no pressure yet. But please win it tonight lol
sodabubbles1281
They were too tight in game 4. Only way to loosen them up is to ease some of the pressure of the moment …which is what Joe is trying to do. Good coaching from him IMO
Bewilderbeest79
I only like this mindset because it prevents the Celtics from putting too much unnecessary pressure on themselves. There’s more than enough external pressure as is
guitarpatch
He knows his team. He knows a great shooting night will win them a game
I think everyone knows the opportunity in front of them
