[Sidery] The Celtics will soon present Jayson Tatum a five-year, $315 million extension, per @wojespn

Tatum’s new deal would become the largest contract in NBA history with an average annual value of $63 million.

As this would be a supermax extension it would be then a precedence setting contract for when down the line Luka, SGA etc are eligible for extensions.

    Deserved.

Would be awesome if he signed it on top of a duckboat on Friday.

  2. theraarman

Rightfully so. Run it back and get a double, and get that FMVP ☘️

  3. It’s already presented, signed and will arrive at Adam Silver’s office smelling like champagne 🏆☘️🍾

I hope I will witness a half a billion contract someday.

Someone who understands the cap better than I do, how are the Celtics going to be able to afford their entire starting lineup when that alone is going to cost like 200 million in a few years?

  6. TheRealAlexisOhanian

They’re going to pay him more than FMVP Jaylen Brown?!?

Can’t believe Woj got this completely unexpected scoop

Serious question: once the new CBA kicks in and Tatum and Brown alone are making 2/3rds of the cap what are the Celtics gonna do?

Having both JT, JB, and Jrue (and hopefully White) locked down for the next 4 years would be insane.

If Hauser can still be a solid 7th man off the bench, our only gap becomes bringing in a Center. I love KP and Al, but Al likely hangs it up either now or after next year and KP is great when he’s on the court, but that’s about 50% of the time.

Still, having this core for another half a decade feels so fucking good.

NBA champion and being handed $315M. Greatest 24 hours in sports history?

People are saying it’s a steal, idk I’m not gonna touch on that but what I do know is these salaries are INSANE

The precedent was set when they made the veteran supermax 35% of the cap, its not really about Tatum’s contract. Luka and SGA and Ant are going to get this same extension when they reach veteran status as well, and it will be the biggest contract in history those times as well.

If that’s Tatum’s number, imagine what Top 5 money will look like

Wemby’s gonna get 100 mill a year at this rate 😭

“Largest contract in NBA history” is a phrase we’re going to be seeing a LOT more over the next few years

Championship, Supermax, Olympics. Hell of a summer coming up for Jayson Tatum

The interesting thing is that Boston still has their picks for the most part. They are only out a 2028 swap, a 2029 FRP, and SRPs in 2028 and 2029. They have a first and second in each of the 2024-2027, and 2030 drafts.

The second apron makes it significantly harder to make trades with those picks, so they might have to try and hit on the picks with older more NBA ready prospects.

Jrue will probably age out of the timeline in 2 years, and depending on KPs health he may be gone too. That’s $60M

I don’t know why, but the term “Supermax” always makes me laugh. It sounds like a word 7 year olds come up with when they are pretending to be superheroes in the backyard.

  20. mfbridges

They know contracts are gonna get insane with the new TV deal so better to just pay him supermax now, will be cheaper than other teams’ superstars.

As an opposing fan who has seen the Celtics take swing after swing on stars and role players I am very happy they will have to face the team building repercussions soon
