[FIBAWC] The official FIBAWC account quote tweets the Boston Celtics claiming to be “World Champions” with a picture of the German national team

The official Boston Celtics account tweeted a picture of the 2023-24 roster and the caption "2024 WORLD CHAMPIONS".

The official FIBA World Cup account was quick to reply with a picture of the 2023 German national team that won the World Cup captioned with just the emoji "🤨".

I forgot about this dumb ass story. Calling them world champions isn’t really accurate, but it’s also semantics when it’s by far the world’s best basketball league.

For an entire month people were acting like Nikola Jokic was American, and team USA losing a completely different competition was evidence that the Nuggets couldn’t claim it

  2. larrylegend33goat

Boston Celtics can go to the Olympics in a couple months for the repeat

  3. larry_birb

OK those guys can join the NBA and see how they do lol

Not sure the Celtics couldn’t handle the Franz Wagner / Schroeder / Theis triangle offense

What I find so funny about this whole “World Champions” debate is the fact that the NBA got the biggest hate for it when most people don’t even call them World Champions. I personally have never called the NBA Champions that, but the MLB literally calls their finals the World Series, a league where the best player is Japanese and won the baseball World Cup last year for Japan against the United States in the finals. I don’t see anything about them having to change their name because they aren’t the “best in the world”

  5. Kendrick Nunn being a good player in Europe should end this debate once and for all.

  6. FreddieFunkhouser

in the quiet words of mike francesa- oh who cares?

the nba/mlb/nfl/nhl are the top leagues in the world for their sport by miles bc all the top players in the world play in those league. it don’t work like that in other sports like soccer because the top league in the uk or spain isn’t miles better than the top league in italy or germany

  7. ShankyShoe

Is it that time of the year for this pointless discussion again?

  8. EmergencyAccording94

Good thing we have an international basketball event in a month

  9. silentorange813

Best Team in the World ≠ World Champion

A concept that’s so hard to fathom, isn’t it?

  10. PotBaron2

that celtics team would embarrass that german national team 😂

  11. Menessy27

We’re doing another summer of this lame ass debate

  12. Only way to settle this is to have them play.

    Celtics by 205

  13. Swolyguacomole

It’s just dumb to me because it implies (North) America is the whole world.

  14. TippyTripod1040

Shame on Europe for making me want to defend the Celtics

  15. Dude it hasn’t been 24 hours since the season ended and we’re with this discussion LMAO

  16. tremble01

Really , the NBA should just stop calling them World Champions because they are not. They are NBA champs.

    That should stop this debate.

  17. tremble01

Really , the NBA should just stop calling them World Champions because they are not. They are NBA champs.

    That should stop this debate.

  18. folkscallmehi

This is always such a dumb argument. The NBA is comprised of the best players from different countries all over the world. There is not a team from any league anywhere on the planet that could beat the best team in the NBA. They are world champs.

  19. If you give a shit about the NBA or any other league using “world champs” as a marketing term, you’re dumb and just want to argue.

The Euroleague champion can call themselves the intergalactic champions for all I care.

  20. iabeytorm

Shouldn’t the argument that they aren’t world champions be that they haven’t beat the requisite clubs to claim that title, not that they haven’t beat national teams? Even if there was a club World Cup for basketball there would still be two separate world champions.

  21. medical_cat

All the fucking losers from around the world crying about this just makes me want to call the nba champions world champions even more.

  22. AllOutRaptors

Okay how about the Celtics play the Schroeder lead Germany team to settle this once and for all?

Schroeder and Franz are pretty equal to Tatum and Brown right? How about Jrue Holiday and Mo Wagner?

  23. WorriedandWeary

I will continue to call all American winners world champions specifically because it makes the weirdo anti-Americans lose their minds. They want us to apologize for being American so bad.

  24. The celtics would completely dominate germany though so why even bring them up

  25. TigerKlaw

USA could lose the next 15 FIBA tournaments (silver at best) and they’d still win gold in every Olympics. FIBA just isn’t important, every org claiming it decides who is the world champ doesn’t mean shit compared to the history of the US Olympic basketball team.

  26. Laszlo-Panaflex

I would love to see the Celtics play a series against the 2023 German national team.

  27. Shepher27

I’m confident the Celtics would beat the German National Team

  28. ajaxtheangel

I don’t why understand why fiba gets all up in arms about this when all of germanys best players are in the nba. it’s not saying usa are the world champions it’s saying the nba is the premier basketball league in the world and has players from everywhere. idk what they’re not understanding

  29. Annual_Plant5172

The World Champion label in a domestic league is actually pretty ridiculous, but it doesn’t surprise me that it’s a uniquely American thing anyway, just like playing the national anthem before every game.

  30. The stereotype is Americans are stupid. World champs for a national comp just adds evidence

  31. tyreezyreed

Good lord Europeans are insufferable. The one downside of basketball becoming big internationally is the influx of these stuck-up weirdos into the general fandom.

If you care about something as dumb as this, you really need to reevaluate your life.

  32. How long before we have champions league for basketball?

  33. ktdotnova

Eh, it could have been interesting this year but Embiid literally messed everything up.

  34. victheogfan

Yall the offseason just started can we give this argument a rest pls it’s been like a year already

  35. ashishvp

Twitter added a fact check to the Celtics post I’m dead 💀

  36. Soren_Camus1905

“People from Phoenix are Phoenicians” energy

  37. Opening_Classroom_46

We sent a squad that wouldn’t even be an nba playoff team to the fiba tournament lol. Oh shucks they lost.

  38. davemoedee

Good response. The broadcast was careful to not say “world champions.” That title needs to die at this point.

  39. _Gibby__

“Actually 🤓☝️” – FIBA pretending people actually care about their tourney
