What if Steph Curry got drafted by the New York Knicks?! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Stephen A. weighs in | First Take

the Warriors have had a ton of success since drafting star guard Steph Curry seventh overall in 2009 if you ask his dad former NBA player Dell Curry the step in Golden State pairing almost didn’t happen Dell Curry revealed that he wanted his son to drop to the Nicks in the 2009 draft he told the heat check podcast so draft day we’re in New York I get a call from former Warriors coach Don Nelson he says Dell you got a problem if we select Steph at number seven I said yes I do he’s like what I’m like yeah we on him in New York we talk for 5 or 10 minutes he’s like well if he’s there we’re going to take him anyway and the rest is history oh Stephen A that must be tough for you to hear that um oh God here’s what I want to know do you think that Steph would have had the same success if he was drafted by New York first of all this very subject pains me as exhausted as I am the last thing I needed added to my life today was depression because obviously I don’t give a damn how much his father wanted him in New York he didn’t want him in New York worse than I did and the New York Knicks ended up getting Jordan Hill with the next pick I know you haven’t heard of him Molly neither have most people no disrespect to Jordan Hill but he hasn’t had that illustrious of a career bottom line and it just reminds me of the opportunities that the New York Knicks have missed out on they had the eighth pick he was picked seventh they had the eighth pick in 2017 by the way where I begged Eminem I begged the New York Knicks to take Donovan Mitchell and that damn Phil Jackson showed why he should never be allowed in the state of New York again because he drafted Frank nilina instead of Donovan Mitchell I was begging them to get him Donovan Mitchell okay in the New York Knicks they end up getting a third pick in the draft obviously it was the draft that Zion Williamson and John Morant went one and two so this is the bane of my existence the bad luck that is the New York Knicks which is why I have to say this Steph Curry would not have had the career that he has had if he were in New York City for one reason and one reason only James Dolan is no Joe Lake up period James D James Dolan I know that we look at him this year and I applaud him Eminem I want to put Eminem up on the screen because I want to be nice I applaud Jam Dolan this is a rarity because we don’t get it I’m gonna give it to him first of all James Dolan is wonderful to to to a lot of African-American employees that he have had that he has had over the years and the things that they say he has done for his staff and people work for himself stff it’s there’s no question he deserves credit for that but I’m gonna say this because he spent so much time paying attention to headlines and to outside noise instead of leaving basketball people to run basketball people it wasn’t until recently Eminem that James Dolan has taking on a new Leaf in some people’s eyes prior to this he was just a bad apple in the organization and he’s the head of the snake as they say and I think he would have gotten in the way of the progress of a Steph Curry prematurely and it wouldn’t have gotten to this point so that okay so ultimately we sort of agree on the trajectories being different I think when we look at what Steph is done in the league I think folks sometimes forget about the ankle injuries and the health early in his career but I also think 2011 was as pivotal I I mean I don’t want to get too hyperbolic here but I think 2011’s draft When The Warriors take Klay Thompson is obviously synced to what Steph goes on to do right and so I just think as great as Steph is as the centerpiece what happened in Golden State those pieces the way they sort of revolutionized that basket the way basketball was being played at that time when they went on that dynastic run in terms of bringing in this idea of small ball which was counterintuitive to what we were doing in the league at that point there were so many things that had to come to fruition just so in Golden State everybody knows Steph is at the center of it but I do think we are talking about very different paths if he was a New York Nick originally because of all the pieces that fell into place in such a beautiful way in Golden State yeah here’s the silver line Ling he’s got a ton of chips he’s had an epic career and the ne uh the Knicks excuse me they’re coming they had an epic playoff Go epic postseason run and they weren’t even healthy so everybody wins we haven’t won yet Monica I mean Stephen A we’re all a little tired today be patient look at the Celtics right look at this team how many times did they knock this group just got together take it down a notch relax give it time no microwave Society okay I’m talking 1973 okay well I’m talking about the new iteration let’s stay focused present moment typical non Nick Monica that’s what Molly girl your summer almost started [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

  1. lets keep it 100.
even of the Knicks had drafted Steph Curry, they woulda traded him to Denver in the package for Carmelo Anthony during the 2010 or 2011 season.

…as for 2017, NO, nobody told the Knicks to draft Donovan Mitchell. not that many people were high on Spida going into the draft.
the player the Knicks were going to select would of been Malik Monk; until Phil Jackson veto'd that and wanted Frank Ntilikina.
but to be clear, it was never going to be Donovan Mitchell.
but back to the original topic, Steph Curry woulda been moved in the deal to bring Carmelo Anthony to NY and NO ONE would have been against trading Curry especially with his early ankle problems.
so its all a non realistic pipe dream.
    we can move on…..

  2. Steve kerr was key to Steph curry, he allowed him to shoot those ridiculous shots. 99 per cent of the other coaches would have benched curry

  3. If the Knicks draft Steph Curry.
He would be traded in the melo trade and probably gone in the NBA.

  4. Jesus christ. One day off of the finals and they are this desperate for topics. Try covering the WNBA or something.

  5. Moved on from the Celtics that fast huh? Well if I lost all that money betting on the Mavs I would to.

  6. no because even though steph is great he didnt make it by himself, why? because he is small against giants. but what i say is that he make his team better and i take that all day against self proclaimed goat.

  7. Meh. This isnt a real question honestly. Steph is a product of the team. Not his individual talent.

  8. When someone says No disrespect it usually the precursor for something disrespectful to be said

  9. SAS saying he begged the Knicks to draft Mitchell, but on his show right after the 2017 draft, he didn't mention Mitchell. He was upset that the Knicks passed up Malik Monk. SAS mentioned Dennis Smith Jr. and Zach Collins….never once mentioned the name of the guy he was supposedly "begging" the Knicks to take.

  10. Well, yea, as both said, drafting Steph was only one piece of everything else that went right for the Warriors to become that dynasty, so the Knicks doing only one of those things doesn't mean they would've had that success.

The "what if" question about Steph is interesting. When the Warriors gave him that first "big" contract, which turned out to be the best bargain in the league, there were questions about that.
I remember the media asking the question "should you give someone with his injury issues that contract?" Lacob did, Dolan would've probably sent him away, like he sent away so many other players after a few years without success (even without injury issues).

So not only would the Knicks not have that success, if Steph had the same personal career track (not winning as much without the rest of the Warriors moves) his good years wouldn't be with the Knicks anyway.

Dell has been telling that Knicks draft story for years. Why is this an item today of all days? Are the Knicks fans in the studio having such a hard time with Boston winning a championship yesterday?

  11. Look at Monica ready to hate.. he woulda still been one of the greatest he night not have had the greatest teammates
