that there’s rumors that you’re going to go to and get a big offer from this summer not only did Klay Thompson recently unfollow the warriors on Instagram he also started following Pao banero of the Orlando Magic as if that wasn’t clear enough clay went on to announce that he will be testing the waters of free agency hey what’s happening everyone this is Swiss culture one of the biggest offseason questions for the Warriors has been the future of one half of the Splash Brothers with every passing day however more hints have been coming out regarding Clay’s future and the more that comes out the less likely it seems he’ll remain a warrior with Moses Moody waiting for an opportunity to earn himself a sizable contract Klay Thompson’s departure would put him in a better position while this doesn’t mean he’ll get the minutes considering he was Lea frogged by jimsky this past season there is much less of a reason for Kerr to keep Moses Moody on the bench more on that but first does this mean Klay Thompson is a magic not really there are still teams like the Detroit Pistons who are interested and with Klay following a number of players on the Chicago Bull Squad things seem to be up in [Music] so we’ve been covering the Klay Thompson Saga from the beginning and this is the first time that Klay will be entering free agency in his career the last time Klay signed a contract was in 2019 on a 5-year $190 million deal which was insane at the time considering he wasn’t going to be able to play for at least another year the prognosis of his ACL ter was clear and the team was just grateful for what clay had done so they gave him the max despite knowing he was out a full year that was one of the toughest seasons for Golden State amassing 15 wins and finding themselves in the lottery with the second pick with the second pick in Clay’s return the Warriors should be able to contend for a title unfortunately just before training camp Klay Thompson tore his Achilles shocking the entirety of warrior Nation it wouldn’t be an overstatement to say the front office players and fans were all devastated Klay Thompson would miss a second straight year of a fully guaranteed aned 5-year contract this meant that the front office knew they were handicapping themselves taking away any potential they had to win a championship just so they could pay clay and for the first two years Klay made a total of $66 million without lifting a finger for Golden State Klay thalson didn’t actually begin playing until halfway through the third year meaning Klay was out for more than half his contract playing a total of only 32 games his first year back after coming in halfway through the season all in all based on his availability to play that’s a 2 and 1/2 year $190 million contract earning clay the equivalent of $76 million a year that’s the value that the Warriors receive from Klay Thompson on that contract what this all means is that a 48 million 2-year contract for a 34-year-old clay was perfectly reasonable for a team trying to pursue another title for their franchise player in Steph Curry if they pay clay anything close to what he’d been making the Warriors again would be hard capped and although Steph wants to play with Clay I doubt he’d be happy playing with this version of Klay Thompson is his only help so now we all know what the Warriors had been offering clay prior to the beginning of the Season what does Klay want well big news just broke on what Klay is asking this news literally just broke as I’m recording this and it’s that Klay Thompson is Seeking a three-year contract in free agency former Warrior Leandro Barbosa who is also also close with Klay Thompson said this in an interview regarding clay if he goes to a different team and I’m just giving this scenario he’s going to have to start all over again if he stays this is home for him this is his house so I hope he thinks and he kind of understands the business what’s the deal and go from there he’s going to have to be really patient I hope he comes back to the Warriors I don’t know what’s the situation but it’s going to be tough I know the money in NBA contracts is going up and he’s been thinking about the money but I think he needs to be happy I think that’s the most important thing this is very interesting considering we’d been hearing rumors that the magic might be looking to offer clay over 30 million a year even on a 2-year deal that’ll be pretty significant I’m going to assume that Clay is probably looking for something in the range of a 3year $70 million contract and the length of the contract is what the Warriors are trying to avoid they do not want to keep play longer than they have Steph Curry as it makes no sense if there’s a chance that Steph Curry leaves in two years the Warriors are going to want to completely rebuild the team at which point klay’s value would be so low they wouldn’t be able to get anything for him this is why Steve cerr is on a 2-year deal as well the outlier here is Draymond Green Green has three years remaining on his contract however it can be argued that Draymond could still find a role in Golden State even without Steph Curry if the team decided to rebuild with draymond’s role as a team leader this isn’t even a question while Wiggins has three years remaining his last year is a player option and he doesn’t have the age question hanging over his head it’s what’s in his head that would be more of a concern for the team now clay following banero and other players from the Bulls doesn’t say a whole lot by itself I don’t think it means he’s planning on going to either of those teams it’s more of a respect thing and if you recall Klay had that game earlier in the season guarding banero and as such he likely just respects him same for Alex Caruso and Demar D rozan this is all part of the gimmick that is the negotiation tactics for players seeking to force their team’s hand and giving them the contract they want it’s up to the team to call BS on Klay Thompson since Klay is testing free agency if he can get an offer from a team for 3 years that is the ultimate goal because without missing a beat he and his agent will take this offer and March right back to Golden State to match this is the ultimate check made for NBA free agents and especially one like clay who was a legend in the Bay Area and will likely have a statue built of him his Splash brother and Draymond Green there’s no doubt that his legacy will be a bit different if maybe stained if he chooses to retire elsewhere optionally he could do what Wade did when Wade spent a year in Chicago before playing one last time with his buddy LeBron in Cleveland before returning to Miami for his last year before retirement could Phoenix or the Lakers possibly be in the cards for Klay Thompson possibly right now however it seems he just plans to get an offer once free agency hits till then clay will be be suiting up for the Bahamian national team not to play for the team as he would need to be released from Team USA but only for practice he’s been taking this offseason more seriously and going to work to show teams that he’s not the player that went zero for 10 during an elimination game a couple of months ago ending a season on that note makes it just about impossible to have any leverage in NBA contract talks if Klay does sign with an outside team The Warriors will need to find a replacement however the best thing to do would be to put Moses Moody in the starting lineup and give him and JK a shot next to Steph Dre and a rebounding and shooting center like yonas valent chunis JV is expected to go to a new team this summer and is likely the best big man option for the Warriors to compete immediately the Warriors won’t be able to put a bid in for him until June 30th which would be the beginning of free agency and they won’t be able to sign him until July 6th if you were expecting to see JV suit up for Lithuania in the Olympics qualifying tournament that won’t be happening is he has to be healthy when team start negotiating per NBA free agency rules obviously if he plays they cannot guarantee his health which could torpedo his career as long as he’s healthy he should be the Warriors number one free agent Target now there is an alternative in Andre Drummond who just made himself available we already covered what Drummond would bring to the team but recently it doesn’t seem he’s happy staying with the bulls and as a free agent this summer the Bulls had him on a 2-year contract which recently expired so it’s not a stretch to think that with a bigger role on Golden State where his rebounding would be key to the Warriors competing at the next level he would bite on a small 2-year deal speaking of the Bulls the Warriors apparently put an offer in for Alex Caruso one the Bulls rejected among many others which included multiple first round picks citing a mandate from their front office to compete in the playoffs next season Alex Caruso originally went undrafted and is now Untouchable in the face of multiple first round picks you can’t make this up whatever the Warriors decide it would be good to keep trace on the floor as much as possible which would mean moving on from Kavon Looney possibly Andrew Wiggins who’s the biggest question mark at this juncture Wiggins is definitely available with the right offer so he could be on or off the team come free agency but absolutely nothing has skewed our expectations of where Wiggins will end up one way or another what do
