Grizzlies that’s the league at whole but there are always leaks right and so we get some good leaks that actually involve the Grizzlies and it regards the Houston Rockets who have the number three make it worse Kelsey all right let’s not make it worse the memph the Memphis Grizzlies is a potential trade partner for the Houston Rockets Hunter F day this is from Kelly Aiko who covers the Houston Rockets very intensely he said both general managers Raphael Stone and head coach eeme udoka are fans of Veteran guard Marcus Smart League sources said is there a possibility Memphis could entice Houston by offering Smart in addition to the number nine pick in future assets to move up and grab kinging if he isn’t already gone Tennessee’s dton connect who is who has fans within the Rockets organization could be available if Houston were to move back okay so a lot of times stuff can just be out there and it can be thrown against the wall and you know we can dismiss it immediately right this is one of those where it’s somebody that covers the rockets on a daily basis this didn’t come out of nowhere yeah okay and it’s also incredibly specific okay like could this interest Houston like um I buy it I buy it because you’ve got anytime there’s somebody these are the things we know to be true of this number one they are in the position now where they would rather add guys with a lot of games under their belt a lot of playoff games under their belt and Veterans to that team they have picked in the top five over and over and over again they have had Jaylen green they have had uh am man Thompson they have had Jabari Smith Jr they’ve got another guy in Alper and Shen like they’ve got all the young guys they need right and so the idea that they would want a hard-nosed battle tested proven winner who their coach loves mhm it makes all the sense in the world that they would want that guy right that they would want Marcus Smart it would also make all the sense in the world that they’re not particularly interested in drafting three and developing the guy right like I mean how many young guys do you need right how many right like how many how many times you want to draft in the top five and so they’ve already got and by the way they also have other fantastic young players on their roster I.E cam Whitmore I.E T een so I mean you have got they Young loads of young players on that team in fact you could fill an entire starting five with just the young guys right and so now they are right because you you could you could run out there amen Thompson 21 Jaylen green he is he is 22 cam Whitmore he is9 T een tar E’s 23 and Alper and shenon 22 yeah okay young young I mean that’s five guys that’s five guys that you could run out there that are all from these last couple of drafts and so the idea that they don’t care uh intensely about drafting number three if they could use three to bolster their team to get another veteran that makes sense the interesting thing on the grizzly side is this I think every time we think about this we go man I don’t want to give up Marcus Smart if it means getting donov MC kangan I don’t want to give up Marcus Martin if it means getting re jeber or whatever you think of it one for one you’ve got to think of it through a a large context here’s what we know okay you’ve got 13 guys that are basically under contract you got to make a decision and the decision comes I Believe by the 29th of June is what I read um next Saturday that’s on that’s on Canard yeah right so you’re either renegotiating a Canard contract and getting him at a lower price you’re either letting him walk you’re either including him in a trade whatever the case may be okay um I do think you want to do something with that asset yeah right e even if you’re not going to sign him for the long term I do think it is worthwhile like you might pick up the you might pick up the option and then put him in a trade okay um because it’s a good I mean it’s it’s a it’s a those $15 million contracts right now have value right and and he can play for anybody yes for anybody everybody always needs shooting and maybe the Grizzlies want to continue with him okay but we know they don’t have a backup point guard they don’t have somebody that’s going to run the show behind John Morant they Derrick Rose is going to be your third point guard and a veteran presence on this roster but you’re going to have to have somebody that’s an every night player and maybe somebody that’s going to be able to fill in if John Moran has to miss an amount of games okay you also are going to have to decide what you want to do at small forward and maybe it will be a rotating cast of characters maybe it will be somebody that you want to get for the long term and we know you want to do something at Center the only way I could foresee a circumstance in which they do use nine and smart or another contract in order to get up is that it’s going to fill one of those needs also you you cannot think of it as one for one because you’re making that deal in order for you to have more money to be able to do what else you want to do right if I’ve got Marcus Smart in a 20 something million dollar contract right and you know nobody loves Marcus Smart more than me I’ve loved him his whole career and I love those kind of guys but I also understand everything that you do with this franchise has to be viewed through the prism of what is the best possible fits around John morand well you’ve already filled two of those roles okay you filled two of those roles you’ve got your stretch four that can space the floor and has to be respected all the way out to the three-point line it can make plays off the dribble and you’ve got your two guard who’s one of the best Shooters in the world okay so now we’re just filling in three and five and then we’re filling in obviously whatever you got to coming off the bench because that matters greatly as well because what happens when inevitably you get injured hopefully you never get as injured as you did last year but there’s going to be injuries that take place during the season okay and so what is the best kind of fit here’s what we know they they’re going to have to get a center they might have to get two I mean you got to make a decision are you playing Brandon Clark at Center you playing jiren at Center like you’re for sure getting one okay one for sure have to okay and you’re for sure getting a backup point guard and and you’re for sure getting a wing like another guard that can handle the ball and make plays off the dribble and whatever else right if you were to make the deal for kingan I think that then here’s what I’d say if you make the deal and get up and you were to take Donovan kingan I think that means that you are now you’re you’re making your decision on what you’re going to do cuz now you’re leaving a hole where where you left Marcus smt so now you’re spending that money on a wing that you trust right you’ve got guys coming up the ladder you’ve got Vince Williams you’ve got GG Jackson you’ve got some of these other guys but that’s what you’re doing if not if you make the deal and you get up and you take Reed Shepard then people have to you can’t think of it like oh I’m moving off of uh Marcus Smart now I’m getting a rookie in his place yeah but what then if with that other money so like let’s say the rookie a third pick in the draft I believe I wrote it down somewhere uh it’s like eight million bucks yeah okay so say you got 20 million to play well now I can use the rest of that money on the other side and now I’m using that to go get my Center maybe I’m making a deal for Jared Allen maybe I’m making a deal for uh maybe I’m bringing in Nick Clon maybe I’m bringing in you know whatever whatever the case may be so I do think that if you are to trade up and honestly it’s been reported like that there are a couple of different teams that like those guys here would be the the reason I don’t know I you can’t make that deal until you get to the draft is because I think that they probably learned the hard way on this with what with zier it was always said that they wanted they thought giddy or fron was going to be on the board I believe that to be true they thought giddy or fron was going to be on the board they’re like okay at this point one of those two guys is going to be there and then they both got taken like immediately and it it was like wait wait wait what like no no no no no no no nobody had both of them being gone by 10 we were G to if we weren’t going to get one we were going to get the other and then they had to they had to make a decision and they ended up taking uh zier Williams in that P but I always felt like after that draft like they were always it was weird how excited overly excited they were about Santi Alama after that Draft when you just picked 10th I always felt that way yeah right it was like oh Santi Adama is going to be the big and I’m like wait well hold on like we just took the guy T right what’s going on here so here’s what I know if you can’t make that deal because there is a real scenario given with this kooky draft there’s a scenario where kinging goes one and Reed Shepard goes two and then you’re sitting there with a third pick and it’s like oh my God why do like I can’t take Alex s or whatever whatever’s going on those are the O I will say this oh God those are the only two guys I would move up for clinging shepher yes I think that’s them cuz it’s needs it’s needs and I do not like if I were doing my list of guys I do not believe will fail they would be because and here’s why you are feeling a need with an $8 million contract and enabling yourself to fill the other need that’s what I’d say so I am a believer like if I didn’t believe that both of those guys could be good quickly and that they could both play for you quickly then I would feel differently about the situation but I do I do feel like both of those guys are Taylor Made for the NBA and I do think that there it’s a possibility they could even be better in the NBA than they were in college certainly shephard I don’t you know kingan he was a fantastic college player as well but if you’re not whichever one of those if you’re moving up to get one of those yeah I would be okay with those are the only two players that I would understand moving up be if you if you told me we covet these guys we want these guys we want the either of these two we want on fouryear deals at a cheap price that is going to one of them could be our Center and the other one is going to be in our guard rotation for the next four years and is a legitimately great shooter everybody knows that those moved up include Marcus Smart only because of the way it fits within the context of the team M I don’t know if I love Marcus Smart the fit is not the ideal fit is that fair it’s not the ideal fit why not I think the the Marcus stuff I look because of the shooting the Marcus fit but he he defends I understand but you have one shooter yeah you got you have one shooter in your lineup M unless you play Vince at the four at times like play in that game Orleans last year who was it it was Vince it was J was it J Marcus Vince yeah I think the three I can’t remember it was the clothing lineup That was like ridiculous bro yeah oh yeah it was was it look I love Marcus Smart Marcus Smart is probably best flanked by guys that could shoot the ball as well Vin we’re just we’re just in a tough spot in I mean and maybe we’re going to look up at Morant can shoot in the high 30s from three I’m interested I’m interested more so I think how you piece this together for grizzli purposes because I’m not interested in trading like Marcus Smart to get back the third pick like me either CU I he just he means a lot to them like I mean know on the court need the but they would they would there would be other I’m saying get Brooklyn involved here’s what I’m saying if if it means I’m filling that out again everybody talks about this stuff like it’s one for one yeah I’m not losing mark smart and getting Reed Shephard no I’m getting or I’m not losing Marcus Smart and getting Donovan kingan yes that is what it’s going to right but I am also now enabl to get would you rather have Jared Allen and Reed Shepard or Marcus Smart shut the f up I can’t even talk to you if that’s if it’s not for this team well here’s this is but no here is the we don’t know if Reed sheard’s good though like we don’t know that we don’t know that I think he’ll probably be a pretty good player but we don’t know that he’s did you not watch yeah but we don’t we don’t know I just know we still don’t know Jared Allen I’m whatever I mean I don’t know you don’t like Jared Allen still I’m still on the thing I just really I really just want more like more adults around these dudes and like you get rid of one totally understand that one of the ones that’s like really like he’s really like took he took the team by like like really trying to structure things out last year you would be you would be getting rid of him and that’s part I’m like that’s you taken away with what they needed opposed to what we need on the court whether it’s guards or centers totally they need the structure of like a dude that’s seen winning I agree around them and that’s why I can’t I can’t get rid of markets like that what if it was Donovan kingan and Mel Bridges that’s so that’s better on the court too but but that’s that’s my thing is I think I think there’s a way to get Brooklyn involved in this where you get Mel Bridges but you still have to give something up but I also don’t think Mel Bridges is the Marcus Smart like he ain’t the per I don’t know I mean I don’t know but I would doubt he’s not that P of P personality so you guys don’t want to keep Markus smart necessarily because of basketball I want to keep him because of how much he like just the structure of this team I I do want to keep him basketball we never got to see it and when we did they were like six and three were so good when score on them well I mean this team look me and you and Roser well forget Roser he’s got a bad back me and you if you put me and you out there with J Dez and jiren you look good that’s fine that’s what I’m saying do it D but I mean we look good with Dylan Brooks come on bro Dylan’s good he’ll defend he not like us that’s tough I do think the Revelation last year makes it easier to try to move on from Marcus CU you’ve got you do have a wing Defender there uh with Vince yeah but I’d like this but he’s still he’s young too it’s the int like the intangible stuff like the it’s the reason I wanted him in the first place the intangible stuff that he does I know we’re talking about like putting the ball like basketball but like the little the little things like even the the play he made in La the little like like that’s little little stuff that you want around these dudes so and also totally fair I think you know if we’re just talking our way through this totally fair to take a step back and you go hey the reason they covet Marcus Smart is the same reason you should CET Marcus Smart exactly he’s going to help the young guys correct reason I got you teach them how to win be Drew holiday [ __ ] there’s a reason eoko wants him and you want him for your practices and you want him around your team and you want him in your locker room and you want him in your huddles like it extends Beyond basketball MH for how important so the same reason that you want Marcus Smart around a bunch of young guys is the same reason so there is a possibility that that is just a pipe dream yeah you know that Houston’s floating out there right they’re doing their bidding on that side right like hey float this out there like hey you know and you may just say hey man it’s not worth it to us to get up to to three um but we do have to think look you can’t have everything yeah you’re not going to be able to pay J and Dez and jiren and all the players you want to play like you are going to have to figure this out long term where if you can find players that can be in your rotation and play for you nightly for $8 million yeah if your starting center is going to make $8 million for the next four years yeah I I know you know like I know you’re not going to be sitting around stressing about like these guys are all you know if if John makes another all NBA team this year which I think is a fair uh even less prognosis he’s gonna he’s gonna they’re going to rip that contract up and sign another extension and then you’ve got jiren the other one’s J after another year if jiren wins DPI or makes an all NBA team he’s eligible for super max so you got to think about this stuff yeah and adding like the draft is the chance to add players that can be in your rotation for four years that you don’t unless you’re just going to hit second rounders and get them to sign up for three years like you did GG and and Vince Williams but you can’t you can’t depend on that yeah you can’t depend on that’s a rarity right that’s a rarity what what what what is now here’s the and and the reason you’re in this situation is because you look up and down you’ve got bang you if you’re just going like wings you’ve got ban smart Vince canard’s totally a question mark right M bro the only other things we until the only other things you got are laravia a ear and Kar yeah I mean they missed so far it looks like misses on zier misses on laravia Miss on Rody like you you nailed these second rounders which is good and you were able to sign them up long term but I mean you’ve got the guys under these contracts that it’s like do you see them in a like we just watched the NBA Playoffs we just watched the NBA Playoffs for two straight months every single night we watched about them came in here and talk about it can you see those guys on a playoff court next year that’s the prison we watch it through for sure and it’s like how many do we have that you could see you could see Gard you could see Bane you could see smart you could see Vince and a little another year you maybe can see a GG out there we we we cont didn’t get on the court Z didn’t get on the court laravia didn’t get on the court and who was the other one I mentioned Santi you know I ja Bane and smart per we’re talking perimeter players ja Bane smart Vince I could see playing playoff game Canard did us I don’t want Canard playing real minutes but they were I mean they were to make a decision you have one shooter but if you have B but that’s what I’m saying like if you have Bane if you have Bane and Vince out there if you have Bane and Vince out there like they can’t cover that which is why the big let’s slow down on Vince yet okay he’s been a good shooter but no we don’t know we have not seen him in play we have not seen him in a playoff game he has not stayed healthy jaah has not stayed healthy for three seasons Desmond Bane has had back issues and foot issues so he hasn’t stayed healthy either and that may be the best argument for keeping smart is like hey he could be your point guard in the inevitable amount of games that J has to miss or if Bane misses some games like you’ve got this other reliable guyle theall I mean that’s also that’s also the argument for me for shephard I am much higher on Shephard than you guys are yes like I think I like I like re shephard I think Shephard’s going to be awesome this is going to be ex like Chad with Deon didn’t like do he not the same I read sheard’s Cod okay if chaden was but let’s be real here if chaden was in this draft if Chad hren was in this draft the prospect rankings would be number one Chad hom grin and then fair CU I I do not I think both of them are going to be starter level players can he guard though in the NBA guard he literally broke Rondo’s steel record I’m just asking like a guard on the ball you tell me I’m just asking I mean well I guess he no he missed it by what two or three just asking if you can guard on the ball Ray joh Rondo Rondo did vouch for him too asking a question if you can make sure I don’t know how you get that many steals if you can’t I mean you can you can jump past them all right name the name the guy his weakness is despite his despite his ability to make big plays on defense often finds himself out of position or gambling for a big play no that doesn’t mean he can’t guard it just means his decision may he is college still um okay he’s not a first option on offense that’s fine that’s fine for us too works best as a glue guy or connector piece fine we’re fine with that as well um Can struggle to get shots off against good defense lacks creation skills will occasionally Force pass is trying to make something happen these are all like college things like when you’re the you’re like the guy he’s never going to be like the guy missed Rondo’s record by five he did Rondo had 87 and a season Shepherd had 82 he’s I’ve never seen him being like considered like as like a you know he’s a really good shooter though yeah hella good shooter what sh like 50 over 50% 54% from three that’s o d 54% from three that’s crazy that’s crazy in col that is that 54% from three is like that’s how many I just have this is a Scouting Report I don’t have like I I just I and if you’re losing Canard we need guys that can shoot the ball he’s not big though either he took four and a half threes a game not as many as you would think four and a half that’s a it’s a good amount for college it’s a lot for college play 29 minutes a game 29 NBA you multiply that by like two maybe hey his real name’s Isaiah and one and one of the beefs was they didn’t play him enough like Kentucky were I don’t know how many times I got to tell you just take the freaking Kentucky guard yeah I mean at some point you’re going to listen to me the Kentucky the Kentucky guard is a that’s a
