the noon hour is here check it out and you’re locked on to Utah’s highest rated most listened to sports radio station it’s my station it’s my station this is H ssen and Scotty G on 975 the KSL Sports Z [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hey let’s get it h and Scotty 975 the KSL Sports Zone hope you are all well let’s go folks let’s do it hands how you doing buddy well I’m trying to talk myself into being excited about the NBA draft like I’m I’m doing everything I can to convince myself but this is the most apathy I’ve had towards an NBA draft maybe in 18 years why is that well I don’t know the the first two picks are looking to be French players that I don’t know a ton about that don’t have the hype and Intrigue of this potential insane rookie year you know we’ve seen a few of those drafted Zion was probably one of the biggest oh so you’re looking at it as a whole not just with the Jazz oh yeah as a okay got you okay as a whole I I think as far as the Jazz are concerned I just think it’s full mystery best player available it’s full mystery and I could see them packaging and trying to move up I could see them selling them all I could see them moving out yeah I could see them dropping down and grabbing three at the bottom end of the first and doing crazy things because the one thing that I didn’t expect them to do last year they did which was draft three and keep three and develop three and play three all through the entire regular season yep and so I’m just looking at this draft period and I’m thinking well as a whole well this is just a whole bunch of of nothing you’re telling me the top two picks are they’re French you’re telling me that the European league has come in and now they’re owning first two picks and they are starting to take over the league and it’s I’m look at American players like okay where we at how we doing we ready to kick this thing up a notch and then I look at the guys that are available and the needs of the Utah Jazz and available at 10 and I I know we gone back and forth on Zach Yi he he’s still very intriguing to me I think he’ll be gone before 10 no he won’t you think he’d be there oh yeah he’ll be available at 10 well I I mean he might be there in in the 20s you think he fall that far and by the way you shut your mouth Zack Ed does not should not be a member of the Utah Jazz at 10 if the Jazz roll on this lyd if the Jazz pick Zach a 10 I don’t know what I’ll do I can’t I don’t know what I’ll say I don’t know what to say here let’s think about this let’s roll yeah Lakers Laker Nation let’s roll uh well then okay so what if Donovan kingan is there I’ll take him way before 10 I take the uh the old the old shooter from Tennessee at 10 give me a lot of people at 10 do not give me Zach Ed a 10 hands that is a waste of a pick if the Jazz take Zach at 10 that’s a waste why do you what is it because he’s not an NBA player he he does like he’s 74 he’s slow he can rebound but he’s slow he has no offensive game at the NBA level he’ll get demolished in the league he’s not a starter like he’s not going to give you what you need a 10 well he’s he’s a he’s he’s a Claud he’s a slow claw moving up and down the court so classic college player and oh yeah great college player Elite college player but no he will get demolished at the NBA level and if the Jazz take him at 10 that is a horrific mistake 7 foot4 200 what was he 240 oh no he’s 2 270 280 oh is he that big yeah those guys don’t come around very often I mean they’re they’re well yeah I mean he’s a freaking nature there’s no doubt about it but again you’re going to see two possessions running up and down the court while he’s trying to get down the court well you said because you called that game I mean you covered him you watched him broke down his game you know this guy Better Than I Do by a country mile and you said he’s built like a a brick house he is built like a brick house yeah he’s massive yep so and he move and he moves like a brick house so he doesn’t have any post ability but he does have some rebound ability oh he rebound the hell out of the ball how is he passing decent passer and he’ll be decent in the pick and roll game again is there a SP at all no yeah yeah look H I’m saying like at 20 20 sure 25 sure 29 yes 32 absolutely yes or that second pick of 29 28 hell no look I’m not opposed to the Jazz drafting Zak Zaki somewhere in the draft I am very much opposed to them taking him at 10 um I’ve seen him projected anywhere from 10 to 15 yeah that’s kind of where I’ve seen him if he goes if he goes at 10 that is a trash pick oh man Lloyd what if this happens what are we gonna do for our guy over here that’s GNA be a rough day I’ll own it man that is going to be a fun show like what what what are the Jazz trying to do you’re trying to get more more athletic you’re trying to get faster you’re trying to provide shooting there’s there’s a lot of things you need to check mark trying to do what the NBA is doing right now right and you just if you drive Zack Eed you get a poor poor poor poor man’s Poor Man’s uh Rudy goar wow I didn’t realize you were that down on him like I knew you weren’t big on I just no I’m talking about that down on him 10 as as an NBA yeah as a top NBA Prospect yeah I know he will not be a starter in this league ever I mean if there’s a bunch of injuries and he’s forced in a lineup sure but so what town do you like do you like d connect yeah I’ll take connect I like him a lot because that he provides what the Jazz needs shooting um if we’re talking about shooting Ron Holland’s up there yeah look you name a bunch of people I’ll take him above Ed are are the Jazz looking for big are they looking for a clinging type I I think at this point at 10 you take the best player available you take the best player available uh I don’t think you draft for need at 10 was it you that I saw tweet out uh identification on Tatum and brown at number three yeah was that you that tweeted that out the a hit on three at back toback years yeah yeah see it makes me wonder while Philly drafted one and the Lakers drafted two both years and both and not good yeah not great it makes me wonder if Danny a has a design cuz I I do think that in this draft he does have the gears to get to probably four or five three four yeah absolutely he’s got the gears to do it I don’t know three might be a bit of a reach a bit of a reach but I think five absolutely I think he could yep maybe four so it makes me wonder if somebody’s hanging around and and that’s the Jazz have continued to be the most tight lipped organization in the NBA it’s so hard to get any information out from Scott Laden to Kevin o’ Conor to Dennis Lindsay to Danny AE it’s tight they will never tip their hand but I would love to know what their sights are and what player it is and if they feel like there is a Tatum m brown in this whole thing but these two French players going number one and number two potentially U lot of G g-league players the g-league ignite uh I did watch a little bit of film on ra Ron Holland I liked him I’m just kind of trying to gear up I like I said I’m trying to convince myself that I’m excited for this draft there’s just not a player that catches me and makes me think oh what I will tell you of anything that has any level of intrigue now it’s like okay is Ed an NBA Talent like is Ed a productive NBA Talent you say he’s not I look at him at 74275 and I think well still what what could he be maybe he’s not but what could he be that’s such a big body I have a big body well good that’s going to do me no you don’t anymore but you would not be a good post player right now I just I I mean he won the he won the DNA Lottery there’s no doubt about it yeah but you need skill athleticism you need a lot to be in the NBA okay if this is 1997 hands yes Edy might be your number one overall pick in 93 he might be your number one overall pick in 2024 the way the game’s being played uhuh so if he was coming out when arves sabonis was coming out sure when when Michael Ola candy was the number one overall pick sure you know what those those are guys that I mean that was a day and age where they everything ran through your post you had a guy with a good back to the basket game the clear space but you got a guy here that is just I mean how how mobile old boy was Patrick Ying very mobile he could move oh he wasn’t 74 oh no Patrick Ying would would destroy Zack was he 71 seven uh he was he was a he was a seven-footer I’m just trying to think of builds like zachi yeah but but but Patrick Ying could he was a gazelle getting up and down the court yeah like that dude could motor you know Elijah one big guy had a motor like these are dudes that could run up and down the court beautiful back to the basket games look fluid with what they did um yeah to to use Patrick ying and Zach Edy in the same sentence makes me want to die a little inside vat deox he’s he’s he’s a v was V was way more athletic than Zach eedi like keep him coming like this dude I think you will shocked by how unathletic he is just how Bas unathletic he is yeah now you’re going to watch some College film and you’re going to be like oh wow he can do this and this and this yeah he’s doing it up against a bunch of just kids kids yeah and you know like like I even saw great oore get around him a few times like like there were he’s he is a li he will be a huge liability defensively in the NBA because of his inability to be able to move laterally side to side his ability to uh he’ll get caught up in pick and rolls uh he will get he will get beat up pretty good and if I’m wrong and the Jazz pick him at 10 and he ends up being a perennial Allstar fine I’ll I’ll take it and I’ll eat my words I’m more than happy to do it have you seen any of this 7 foot4 French player this Alex SAR have you watched a little bit not not a lot just because there’s no way the jazzer in the contention so I haven’t spent much time looking at him cuz I that’s from what I’m understanding he is now the number two projection to Washington and 7 foot4 he’s got a 74 wingspan extremely long I have not watched I’ve not seen any of them I gotta I gotta turn on some French film apparently and get ready for draft night the American the American player taking back seats yes uh that sounds like that bothers you a little bit I it’s it’s something I never expected because we sit here and we say well our best players are football and and basketball we don’t have time for soccer yeah and it’s like all right now these soccer playing countries are now churning out high level NBA players exactly exactly it’s like all right well there goes that argument can’t can’t blame it on that anymore yeah but and I the reason by the way the reason I say that is because I’m just looking at MVP voting MVP grabs you know your top threes over the last couple years have been European players or european born I I still and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon either doesn’t no because LCA dones is not GNA slow down Nicole yogish isn’t gonna slow down those guys still have years and I do think that the Russell Westbrook MVP triple double season maybe put a damper on guys like Luka donic maybe grabbing it just off of off of number grabs but he’s still just an impressive human being yeah oh 100% I I I don’t know I’ve told you a couple times I would still look I’m not I’m not against the European players but you’ve heard me I want the Jazz to draft European players because I think that they’re less interested in where they’re at who they’re playing for what city they live in I think that they’re more interested in scheme development and becoming great and frankly I think they’ve already been developed better than United States players yeah I do I agree that I agree like they’re I think that’s Advanced the the eies these guys go to as opposed to the aaou Circuit that the American kids grow up on where it’s just a Chuck it uh kind of League or you just get yours like I think these guys are coached up way better in Europe than than we are in the United States there is a Czech player that’s kind of uh he’s he’s from Serbia and he is kind of in that somewhere between 8 and 15 this Nica topic the the kid that tours ACL uh see that’s the guy I I think you should keep an eye on okay I I was reading a little bit about him this morning and was at least interested uh extremely aggressive very quick very choppy great pass good Vision like all those things that we’re seeing from these European players that are advancing these teams watch for Nico atopic because maybe he’s that guy but I’ve seen him as low as like 18 and 20 in some BO well and that’s the thing the ACL just is a is a huge problem there but I mean you know I mean you know look you know the world of injuries if it’s the ACL you can come back from that you can full full sometimes better yeah if you if if you’re building your body out while you’re recovering a lot of times you come back with better core strength it takes a minute to get the full Mobility back where you’re moving laterally as well but it actually forces players to focus on a total body control yeah and so yeah they can come back a little bit more once it’s fully healed a little better yeah and and I’m not opposed I know David Lock’s a big fan of this too I’m not opposed to the whole red shirt year for for a rookie player in the NBA to be able to just sit back travel with the team practice with the team learn the league get healthy be part of the nutrition and and development plan and then take it all in and then be ready to go your second year in the league and I think that’s kind of the path that uh well that certainly is going to be the path that he’s on uh but I don’t think that’s a bad route for him to go and and also I was reading on it and and you could correct me if I’m wrong but I believe it was just a partial tear oh really I thought it was a full tear okay if if it I could I could be wrong on that too I when I was reading about him I thought it was a partial tear but I I’ll go back and look at it okay which I actually that’s one area I’m not real familiar with I if partial is that much less um of a deterant or that much less of an as compared to a full tear but um cuz I I I actually don’t know that I don’t know if that if a partial tear is as bad as a full tear I don’t know but I thought I remember reading it that it was partial uh but uh look when it comes to the Jazz everything’s on the table at this point trade up trade out sell I think there’s everything is on the table um trade for players Talent acquisition uh I was talking to somebody close to the organization the other day and they were like we have no idea we have no idea what Danny’s got up his sleeve everything’s available and the poker face and frankly I don’t know if Danny really knows what he’s going to do up until trade or up until that day what I think is he’s probably got 10 things he knows he’s going to do and he’s just going to wait to see which of the 10 plays and and one thing that I think they do a very good job of and everybody does attempt it but I think Danny does it probably better than most is that you go through your scenarios okay let’s run through this what if this happens doot we do this what if this happens and you lay out and you game you know you you plan for you know every possible strategy every possible outcome and when it happens you know exactly what you’re going to do it’s like you know you as a player when you game plan if this if they show this we do this if they show this we’re ready for this if they do this then we do this and the Jazz have game planned the heck out of next week’s draft okay from that standpoint I’m that’s why I said with the Utah Jazz when I when you ask me oh you’re talking about as a whole as a whole I’m very unenthused with Utah Jazz I use the word mystery yes because I just think anything could happen this could end up turning out to be the most exciting time for the Utah Jazz in a in a draft it could be if they’ve put something together some type of big trade some type of Blockbuster and they want to shift into gear and make this the year that they try to make the move which would Shock Me with what we’ve got in the west right now not that you can wait and I I had to put it this way for somebody I was talking to a buddy and he was like I because he heard us talking about the timing of things where the West is who’s in the west how good they are who you got to avoid who you’re going to butt up against if you do unload the treasure chest and I’m I’m staying with this and you might feel completely different about this and we could get into probably a more lengthy conversation on this I feel like to a certain extent I feel like the NBA is like a husband and wife that have not had a kid and they’re sitting there looking at each other like should we do this well I don’t think we’re ready what do you mean don’t think we’re ready well I we need to get more money we need to get the house and we need to get ourselves ready to have a kid and there comes a point where you’re like no you just you just do it you got to have the kid yeah you got to have the kid and then we’ll figure some things out and that’s kind of how I feel about the Utah Jazz with the draft like I get it the West is nasty it’s got some built out teams it’s going to be really tough to compete against and maybe you can try to wait something out but you know what you wait it out you waited out LeBron James you weighed out the Golden State Warriors you you you’ve waited out dynasties the next Dynasty would be Denver it’s not going to be Dallas and it’s not going to be Minnesota and and we’ve seen that Denver has some weaknesses there’s I I don’t know how much you sit around and wait and say yeah well we got to buy our time let’s build more resources have the baby and we’ll figure it out from there love it I love that hands and Scotty this is 975 ekl Sports Zone three two one it’s the 10th visit cvca cruin those are two different words Cru in.com we good Lloyd you got that yeah we’re good we’re good all right you good I’m great man all right uh NBA draft coming up next week NHL draft coming up next week uh and by the way hands we have it the first game ever for the Utah Hockey Club September 22nd at home against St Louis preseason hockey the first ever game I know I can’t I was I was looking at that release this morning and I still can’t quite believe it now there’s some interesting things happening you saw the avalanch coming for preseason but they’re coming to the Maverick Center so there’s a couple of interesting schedules notes in this preseason release I will tell you that we’ve had a couple of NHL guests on and we’ve asked them about NHL preseason and they have told us it’s less important than even the NBA preseason they said it’s kind of a throwaway but that’s what we’ve had here in the state you know when we had Frozen Fury it was the Kings it was preseason it was awesome it was exciting I went to a bunch of I had a blast so I know what’s coming and I know what’s about to start and I I’m excited even about that but it’s pretty cool that you’re going to get the Colorado Avalanche at the end of that preseason schedule right there at the Maverick Center yep probably the first NHL logo to play on Ice andet I I don’t remember the Maverick Center hosting anything NHL uh not that I know of um but I have watched many Grizzlies games in that Arena me too many many but you know the honest thing about this is it’s just you look you’re right next year at this time when we see the preseason schedule it’ll be a big yawner and we won’t even really mention it it’s just the historic nature of this it’s awesome I know I saw it and you know you just read through the names and you you get really excited for what you’re going to see LA Kings are going to be the first here in in terms of that preseason schedule so it’s something that we’re all kind of used to do with the Frozen Fury but being a part of it having the having the the soccer or sorry having the hockey club logo across the jersey and having it be our own here in the state I know it’s GNA be go see that see that sweater with that Utah logo on there oh man it’s so and I’m not necessarily Jersey guy but I’m gonna get me one of those sweaters yeah I’ll do the Utah one I will for sure sure CU I do think 10 15 years down the road no now we need our uh faith in humanity restored on that thing well I don’t want to you know the good thing is I think we’re getting our faith in humanity restored with with one sweater in particular yeah yeah so it would be nice to have multiple sweaters you saw Hockey Club sweater do you like the colors I do like the colors like that blue and black yeah I wonder if that’ll be part of the full logo coming up next year when the new uh when the whole team name is announced I wonder if the the colors remain the same I could see Ryan Smith pulling a 180 oh I oh I can too absolutely we asked him specifically was that last week we had him on for a nice chunk of time we asked him specifically if he’s trying to coordinate his ownership areas a little bit with color and design yeah do you remember what he said uh cuz I asked him about RSL and like no you know the the clar and Cal and that’s you need I think I think he acknowledged that there’s there’s some upside to that but I don’t think that’s a huge point of emphasis if I remember right I would like it I just I want to see it be its own yeah stand on its own yeah I want to see some unique color I have you know I’m down on AI you know I don’t like it no it’s taking over the world yeah it’s skynet’s going to come live and we’re all going to come slaves it is removing Humanity’s creativity yes because the human mind now it was the human mind that built AI so we got to give it credit there but the human mind and its creativity is what’s given us some of the most amazing designs in world history but now we’re relying on AI to spit out and generate all these and I I got to admit I’ve seen a couple that I really like that’s why I fell in love with the mammoth thing there was there was one AI generated Mammoth sweater I was like geez that thing is really tight I like it and I’m not talking about because I’m overweight tight tight I’m talking about that kind of toght that’s the kind of TI I’m talking about hey uh I sent out a tweet earlier today um do you know what’s going on with this whole Drake Kendra Kendrick Lamar thing I was just talking to Conor about a little bit sounds like it’s gotten really out of personal well and I sent out a tweet I said hey can somebody explain this to me like I’m a 46 did you get any Returns on it oh a lot a lot of people are helping break this thing down to and I was just making a joke I don’t care I don’t really want to know well what are the top two things that you don’t want to be called uh lazy and um a pedophile minor racist and pedophile yeah those are the two it’s like they it’ll end your in your end your world that’s true those are the two that’ll end your career and if you put a gun to my head and you said can’t pick one I’m going to say pedophile yeah I I don’t want to be that you don’t want to be accused of that you don’t want anything remotely close to that next to your name and it it sounds like um uh not Perkins Lamar Kendrick Lamar it sounds like he I don’t think Kendrick Perkins can issue a diss track diss track like uh Kendrick Lamar sure he wants to uh Perkins goes at people though yeah can’t stand that guy but um it sounds like he didn’t just write the song and sing it once Conor was telling me that he really went hard at him in a concert over the weekend with a lot of Hollywood types in attendance so you know so Conor do you feel like most people are pro pro uh Kendrick everybody’s team is that because they’re scared of Kendrick because of what he’ll do what he can do or is it because Drake is a pedophile well yeah Kendrick is the Boogeyman okay that’s what I’m that’s he’s GNA come get you you gotta be careful that dude coming to get you well hopefully that helps square away some of the some of the behind the scenes going on I see all this stuff on Twitter and it was blowing up last night and I’m thinking should I be caring about this because you and I are always like you know right we want to have a certain amount of Pop Culture into the show and we want to be up to speed with what’s going on and then I’m looking at this I’m like I don’t care I don’t want I don’t I don’t really want to know anymore about this well I I feel like I’ve completely lost touch completely lost touch because I was doing all the show prep this morning I sit in my little office and read through stories and pull up things that interest me and all of a sudden I hear Adele blasting like full volume from the back side of the house and I’m like what is going on with a Dell like who even listens to a Dell anymore so I walked back there and it’s rock blasting a dell and I said Son turn that off what are we what are we doing and he said uh Dad she is not fire uh what’s there there’s a word that the kids use gas gas that’s that’s it Conor so she is full gas so no more lit no more fire it’s gas gas and I was like uh Adele went out with like the 2010s I thought but no I think she’s still hanging in there very much now she’s dating uh Rich Paul like LeBron’s buddy that runs the agency oh right oh my gosh yeah I’m lost man she dropped a bunch of lbs and now she’s like now she’s dating the one of the most powerful men in all of sports uh just staying on the pop culture side of things how about Justin Timberlake man he got himself in a a l of trouble I guess his system was loaded with illegals tell you what man not okay man and somebody asked sir are you going to address this he’s like no I got a world tour I’ve got I what are we talking about addressing an addiction I got to go make some money how about you worry about yourself how does that sound yeah we kind of are worried about us and our our community yeah with you driving around all with enough with enough uh narcotics in you to kill a horse you want to know the best detail of of any of this that I read Because I did read through this Justin Timber Lake thing you never know what to believe but one of my favorite details of this the cop that pulled him over and was issuing the arrest was so young he had no idea who Justin Timberlake was no idea wow Timberlake handed him the ID and he’s looking at it he’s like oh what have you had to drink what’s in your system why are you acting and and Justin probably look at him like hey man I’m bringing sexy back wink wink win yeah yeah yeah and this kid is like what that’s a horrible thing to say like that’s uncomfortable and awkward he didn’t really say that I’m just saying there’s probably some really awkward conversations but the kid did not know who he was was do you think that drove just that’s probably worse than for him oh yeah for sure he’s like hey man let’s let’s move on you know I’m I’m JT man he’s like wait a minute what are you famous yeah do you know who Kendrick Lamar is because that’s who I care about you’re not Kendrick Lamar you’re getting a ticket for DUI you wait till Kendrick Lamar hears about this you’re in a lot of trouble mister all right 12 46 hands and Scotty what you may missed next 975 the KSL Sports Z this is this is DJ and P Canon Catchings projected first round pick in 2025 is olon Scott Gerard 975 the KSL Sports Zone happy Thursday everybody hope you all had a good day yesterday hopefully you were lucky enough to have the day off enjoy a little time with family yeah yeah it’s uh it was an amazing day for for us for sure it was beautiful beautiful weather little bit cooler yep and just a gorgeous time went up to Park City and had a blast up there it was like 65 up in Park City oh really yeah just stunning well it’s funny bring up Park City because the NCAA selection committee is going to have some summer meetings coming up I believe here in a couple of weeks in Park City um where they’ll talk about a lot of things one of the things being discussed right now by the NCAA and what you may have missed uh the NCAA officials have presented division one conference Commissioners with at least two different models that would expand the NCAA tournament field to 72 or 76 teams now it stands at 68 if pass that tournament expansion would not take effect not this season but the season after the 2526 season remember back in 2011 it jumped from 65 to 68 back in 01 when the Mountain West formed they had to jump it from 64 to 65 but again everybody’s looking at all this extra money it’s just like can we just leave it alone like I mean no they can’t just they and and they they may end up saturating it they may up into hurting it but this is this is what I would do if if I’m the NCAA committee at this point this is what I’d do because this getting absurd because now everybody could make a case for being in there not everybody but there’s a lot of teams that can make a case that they’re one of the best yeah 76 teams in the country how about this man how about we build out what is that 340 teams uhis yeah how about we just build out a 340 Team Bracket eliminate regular seasons and just make it a season tournament cuz really that’s all anybody’s paying attention to anyway screw it screw it’s dumb now I know it won’t be the elimination and you’re out but okay bump them out and you play a different schedule you bump down into a bracket and you play through this bracket and you bump further down in a bracket play out that bracket and let’s just figure it out through bracket play who who the absolute best kind of feels like that’s that’s what everybody just cares about anyway so why not Well everybody’s well I know BYU’s kicked up interest and it’s going to be an interesting regular season it’s just like what how how how far do we got to go yeah how many teams have have to be involved with this tournament before we start kind of shaking our head like okay we dialed this in I I have always felt like the the current expansion to 68 I’ve always felt like you know even the way they put in the final four and they’ve got the the the the playing games it’s fine yeah oh it’s perfectly fine but they want to build a new site they want to build out more games potential extra revenue and whatever let’s be honest Greg sanki wants it from the SEC so that’s what he’ll get because the Dude wields a powerful Sword and the SEC wants it they’re tired of all these little little guys getting in and uh taking bids away from his teams and so he’s like all right well then we’re going to need four or five more teams in for us for us for the SEC not that we’re a basketball Powerhouse conference frankly if there’s a team that needs to be being and moaning about things it’d be the big 12 they’re the best basketball conference yeah they seem to have more teams that are excluded that probably have built the you know I I don’t want to get caught into just the the norm of conversation because you know it’s so popular just to say that the Big 12 isn’t an incredible conference but I watched it pretty close last year oh yeah it was and it was a really good conference and there were teams that were involved in that tournament where you’re like nah that I could make a really heavy argument that a 500 team that didn’t get in probably should have been in from that conference so maybe the 74 or 76 I mean maybe that does allow for those those teams that otherwise wouldn’t be excluded but it’s a money grab it’s a total money grab I just and it’s going to happen oh yeah yeah no it’s it’s going to happen I just like to your point though it’s like maybe not as Extreme as your point but if we’re going to expand this thing then take it to 128 or whatever like if if if instead of this like little death by paper cuts nonsense that we keep doing every 10 years yeah oh let’s add three teams oh let’s add four teams you know what fine let’s just add a whole another round to the whole thing and just go a third of the team playing college basketball makes makes the NCAA tournament yep if you really want to make the money then fine just blow the doors off the whole thing and let’s put a together an entirely new round yeah and let’s build a losers bracket where we can sell the Los double double elimination we F the CIT with the NCAA tournament losers bracket you you fall out of this tournament the first two rounds we we feed you into this tournament and I actually don’t hate that I I like that idea yeah I mean i’ the NIT is the best teams eliminated from that first round that’s what I was thinking yeah I was like We’ll build out a losers bracket that’s a hell of a hell of an idea there that plays out well I nobody ever hires me for ideas give this man a job man nobody got ideas I’m an idea man what is it you say you do around here I’m an idea guy I deal with ideas well I do think it would be interesting and and I do think it would sell more money than building a a bracket of a bunch of to nobody that don’t deserve to even have a post yeah but they’ll figure out a way to make their money 76 teams yeah hands of Scotty 975 the ekl Sports Zone number one miss any part of the show every moment of every show is available in podcast form by searching Hansen Scotty on your favorite podcasting platform or online at kslp sports.com this is H Olsen and Scotty G on 975 the kosl Sports [Music] [Music] Zone hands in Scotty 975 the KSL Sports Zone kicking off your 1:00 hour let’s talk some college hoops from the field fi of 68 uh and they may have to do a name change here pretty soon field of 74 field of 76 Rob dster kind enough to join this you can’t really settle in on a on a number these days because the NCAA keeps wanting to screw things up right Rob well if they change it to the they Chang it to a 76 tournament or something like that I’m I think we’re just going to change the name of the the business back to it should be 64 there you go I like it man I will say I am pretty far up and you got me coming into a little Smooth Criminal little Michael Jackson so that’s about as good of a bumper song as you can get coming on a radio headit oh yeah we got you we got you by the way uh earlier in the year I was call I do the play-by-play for Utah State and Jeff Goodman was uh was in attendance for a game and and and so I brought him in on the postgame show and he made it about five minutes before he took a shot at you and I’m like wow why you why you dragging Rob into this like that that that dude finds any way possible to bring you into some kind of uh Smoke For Crying Out Loud well I’ll tell you this much Jeff thought that uh that Utah state was a fraud and wasn’t good enough to make the NCAA tournament until about March 15th last year so that tells you everything you didn’t need to know about his ball knowledge for sure hey uh let’s before we get out we want to get your thoughts on BYU and what they’re building and just how good this team could be next year but before we do that do you think it’s a for gone conclusion they expand this tournament I mean this is just seems like this is the path they’re heading down regardless of whether the public wants it or not I I don’t think that it is I don’t think that a lot of the decision makers at the NCAA want to go this route I think that it is a method of trying to appease some of the power conference programs that want to be able to keep more of the NCAA tournament revenue for themselves so instead of having them say look you know what we’re just going to leave and we’re not going to have an NCAA tournament anymore we’re gonna have a power five tournament or whatever it would end up being a a 40 team Big 10 and a 35 team SEC tournament um we’re going to stay here we’re going to do this but the the way that it’s going to work is you’re going to give us eight more bids they’re going to end up going to power conference programs and um we’re going to get more win shares as a result of it so I think that that’s kind of the reason why it would end up going this way more or less because the NCAA is getting held hostage than anything else which is dumb you know in in in a point in time where it seems like nobody ever agrees on anything I think every single consumer of this Board of college basketball every single fan every single media member is like this is a terrible idea this is dumb it is the one thing that actually unites the United States of America instead of just having the States of America we have the United States of America backing uh the idea that we should not expand the tournament and you know what they’re going to probably end up doing they’re probably G to end up expanding it so that just tells you everything you need to know about the people that are leading the NCAA at this point that’s crazy and you know we’ve talked so much about the powers the be of college football wanting to completely disconnect from the NCAA is there a lot of rumor or shakeup or talk I I know you were kind of mentioning what the picture of it is but does does the basketball World want to separate from the NCAA at some point Rob I I don’t think it’s the basketball world I think it’s the it’s specific conference Commissioners right I think the biggest issue that we have in college athletics is that the people that are in charge of making the decisions are not college sport fans they are people that operate thinking about how much money are we going to be able to make for these School presidents and school presidents thinking how much money I’m going to going to be able to make for my University and the people in the athletic department thinking about how much money am I going to be able to to bring in to get to these players and get to a REV share program and get to our coaches and get to our staffs and get to our facilities right you have a bunch of people that are worried about the amount of money that comes in and think about sports as a business as opposed to people that love the sport for what it is and love the little uh the fun rivalries that pop up all over the country and love the stuff that makes it unique and makes it special and makes it something that uh is why all of us love college football and college basketball so much right like if you’re trying to tune in and see the absolute best football that you could possibly watch you’re probably not tuning in to watch college football right the reason why we love it is because it’s a mess and because we just care so much about it right if you’re trying to watch the best basketball you could watch you are not turning on a college basketball game right that’s it’s it’s ugly it’s messy there’s a lot of mistakes that are made they turnover prone there’s a lot of Miss shots but you’re turning it on because it’s competitive you have these unbelievable environment and that’s because people care so much right it is the most important thing in the world that means absolutely nothing in the big picture and that’s why they love it and if you’re trying to turn it into miniaturized versions of the NFL and the NBA it’s just not going to work because it’s not the same Sport and that’s the most frustrating part about all of this to me is that it feels like these people are so disconnected from what actually makes these Sports special and what actually makes people like us love it so much so how much is what Kevin young and BYU are trying to build right now in terms of recruits and what they’ve brought in in that regard has caught your attention and others on the national scene and how good could this team be next year I think that they have a chance to be um to be real good next year I don’t know if they’ll be as good as they were last year but I think they have a chance to be pretty uh pretty special this season um you know I think that bringing a couple of pieces back from last year to add some continuity while uh bolstering it with some of the talent that they’re bringing in like I think you know you’re obviously going to ask about eor demon and K Catchings because those two are um guys that have a chance to end up being NBA players right and that’s always fun and it’s nice to be a ble to have pieces like that in your program but I think uh being able to get back some of the kids that started last year right being able to bring in someone like a Maat mad from from Ruckers who um at 67 is one of the best defenders that you’re going to find in college basketball to bring in a guy that started at Utah in kakada right and be able to have these pieces that you know have experienced college basketball before and know uh what it takes to be able to win at these levels right and then you combine that with some players that were at the program last year some older that you still have within the program and then this highle Talent like that’s kind of what you look for when it comes to being able to uh build a successful program right like let’s just talk about Yukon for a second they the last couple of years they’re best players they’re all Americans the guys that have been the Stars on those program have been there for two three years and developed over the years right and then what they did was they went out and they got a couple of freshmen that could help and they brought in the couple of transfers that can plug specific holes and they were able to win a lot of games because the majority of their minutes were kids that were coming back from the program they had a lot of old bodies on that roster and they were able to to supplement all of that with a couple of really talented freshman and I think if you look at what BYU has uh on paper on this roster heading into next season um it’s it’s very similar in terms of the roster build now I don’t know if they’re going to necessarily be as good as Yukon if uh they end up steamrolling their way to an NBA championship You Can Count me as one of the guys that will be surprised that it happen but I think they built their roster in the way that you want to be building a roster in 2024 in college basketball in your opinion is Kevin young a for sure thing you know one of your lead NBA assistance coming in and now taking head coaching Reigns at the college basketball level is it is is it a for sure thing that he is the guy for that that job um I think that he is I like the hire right there’s always going to be a risk when you are bringing somebody in from the NBA level to go coach in college because it’s just so different in terms of what the job is right um in the NBA you’re you’re just in charge of taking the pieces that you are given and trying to win as many games as possible whereas in college if you’re the coach like you’re the guy that has to build those rosters and also the guy that has to figure out how to win with those rosters and then also make sure that you know these kids are getting their nil paychecks and they are going to class and they are getting good enough grades where you’re going to be able to use them for the entire year and you got to make sure that um you know they’re not doing any of the D things that that college kids uh tend to do and I think that that gets a little bit more important when you’re at a place like BYU that has a little bit of stricter uh policies when it comes to to some of that stuff so um it’s always a little bit of a risk like the other part of it is the level of uh time that you’re going to have to spend recruiting right what it happens in the summer are you gon to be out on the road are you gonna be able to put in all that effort and the thing about uh thing about Kevin is um one I think the basketball side of it is going to be something that that comes fairly easy right like I everyone want I talk to know that that dude can coach and the other part of it is that his brother is a guy named Justin Young who has been in and around grass basketball for like 25 years he used to write for Rivals he luned events he uh he ran a company called Hoops scene which was one of the biggest uh Grassroots basketball operations in the Southeast and now he’s doing the same thing out of Phoenix as well and um being able to have that connection to the college game where you can kind of know where you want go the players that you want to bring in is going to you know open up some pipelines for you to be able to recruit I think that is going to help his transition as well it’s not like he’s fine and blind and doesn’t really know what he needs to be able to do to be successful in the college level because his brother knows everything he need to know about being successful in the colle level so I think he’s going to be a really good coach and I buy the X’s and O’s I buy the program building look if you are able to recruit if you have the money that you need to be able to go get like they beat out who they beat out Arkansas and Illinois for eagor demon right like kenon Catchings um he had other offers as well and they were able to go out and get him like it’s not like uh the the ISS if he’s not able to to win there it’s not going to be because he didn’t have enough money it’s not going to be because he didn’t have enough Talent it’s not gonna be enough because he didn’t have enough players was like he’s going to have everything that he needs to be able to be successful now it’s like can you go out and do it at the college level so it’ll be fun to watch but I think there’s enough Talent on this roster that uh they should you know I’m looking at them the Big 12 is going to be an absolute Bearer this year but I’m looking at them as a potential you know borderline top 25 team that should be able to be in the NCAA tournament when it’s all sent down on selection Sunday so you take the Big 12 already one of you know probably the best uh conference in college basketball and then you add some of the Pack 12 holdovers most notably Arizona I mean is there any doubt this is the most difficult conference in the country when it comes to basketball it’s insane at the top like it’s it’s honestly I I don’t I don’t know how some of these middle of the- pack programs are going to be able to function here like so Kansas might be the number one team in the country Houston is going to be a top five team Baylor might end up being a top five team in college basketball this year oh by the way Iowa State who finished second in the League last year basically brings back everybody that they wanted to bring back as a couple transfers in they might be there’s a legitimate argument to make that the Big 12 has four of the top five teams in college basketball next season and that’s before you consider how good Kansas State probably is going to end up being now that they went out and they added a couple of these other pieces in the transfer portal Coleman Hawkins uhana specifically right that’s before we talk about um how good Arizona is going to be as they make their adjustment to the Big 12 they’re a borderline top 10 kind of a team right Texas Tech is going to be really really good this year because Texas Tech is always really really good all gr M hasm does is go out and win there’s a real chance that BYU could be as good if not better as a basketball team this year and be like worse in their stand like they could end up being like the eighth best team in the Big 12 this year and be better than they were last year like that’s Cincinnati’s going to end up I’m just rolling through these list of teams right now like we could be looking at like 10 or 11 teams out of that conference in the NCAA tournament and it’s just like good luck man have fun with that Hey Kevin young congratulations welcome to college basketball you get to go to fall Gall field housee and go play at Baylor in your first two big 12 games or whatever it end up being like have fun figuring that out man good luck just transitioning into the NBA draft a little bit and I know there’s that college expertise here in the United States and I’m just looking at all these foreign born players I mean how many foreign born players could we see in the first round maybe six seven maybe maybe eight forborn players why why are we seeing such a shift Rob um I think some of it is just what this recruiting class is this year right like it’s just it’s going to there’s going to be a cyclical thing here you know sometimes you’re going to have a lot of really good players um really good baric board players at the top of the draft sometimes that it’s not going to necessarily work out that way right uh and it just so happens that the 2023 recruiting class was one of the least impressive recruiting classes that we’ve seen in a long time um 2024 is uh once you get past Cooper flag it’s kind of similar right there’s not as many really good players at the top of the 2024 recruiting class um but if if Cooper flag had stayed as a member of the class of 2025 we would have sitting here like in the 2026 draft and the conversation we have he was like wow is American basketball back with Cooper flag AJ deons and cam Boozer is the guys that are GNA be the top three picks like you could be sitting here with the third pick and you’re GNA get a better player than you would have gotten number one in any of the last like two or three drafts so um part of it is just cyclical it’s just there’s a couple of down recruiting classes that we’re in the middle of but I also think you know if you look at the best players in the NBA right now right like we’re probably talking Nia yic LCA donic and Giannis attenta kopo right like they’re if they’re not the top three like they’re very much in the conversation for the top three and they’re probably like right there top five six seven uh Shay gild just Alexander he’s from Canada right Jo yeah Joel embiid uh you’re looking at Victor Wayne Bama right I think part of it is that the rest of um the rest of the basketball world has kind of caught up to the NBA in terms of being able to develop guys and I think that you’re seeing um players the access that some of these overseas kids are getting to NBA exposure College exposure American basketball exposure is something that is also bringing some of these guys over earlier and helping with some of their development so I think it’s a combination of a bunch of things but I’m not just because like there’s four guys that could be uh could be from Europe that get drafted in like the top six this year I think it says more about what this recruiting class is than anything else just circling back to the Big 12 for a second before we let you go considering the strength of the conference considering what they’ve got coming back and who they’ve added uh how much pressure is on Craig Smith and the University of Utah this year and um is is is is the bar maybe set too high for what they can accomplish next year for him to feel pretty comfortable about coming back for another year um I I don’t I don’t think that he’s in a spot where he is going to be on the doing air quot here the hot seat just yet uh and know when you’re adjusting to a new league and you’re gonna have to go play at a place um or in a conference as difficult as the Big 12 is I think you get a little bit of uh of leeway there but you know at some point you you got to start winning and it certainly doesn’t help that you know you’re losing guys like um like Devin Smith and the transfer portal or you losing guys like kakada to a rival of yours right that’s probably not the greatest look in the world if you are um the Utah head coach so uh I I think I think he probably needs to start winning right like at some point you got to get this team determin you got to be able to to to show results for the investment that the university is making but it’s also something where like if you’re if you can’t keep a guy and part of the reason you can’t keep him is money and uh the reason they’re going to another place is because they can get paid more like what is he supposed to do if the if it just doesn’t have the necessary support that you need right so there’s a lot of factors that go into it but uh to to answer your question the short version is yeah you probably want to start winning if you’re going to be the coach of the Big 12 program you want to be there for a while all right Rob uh I’m a big fan of what you guys do over there at the field of 68 I know you guys got to bet on yourself on that thing and uh it’s paying off in Spades man you guys are killing it I love it as a college basketball Junkie uh it’s one of my go-tos throughout the season so thanks for all you do man you and Jeff and everybody else over there do a killer job and uh look forward to catching up again here very soon thanks Rob it’s all me man don’t give Jeff any credit love it love it you got it there he is Rob doer right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone get there field of 6 8.com hands in Scotty 975 the KSL Sports Zone ladies and gentlemen may I present this is JJ and Alex joining us right now on the program glad to have her along the commissioner of the Mountain West Conference Gloria nvar is on the show here with us you know we’re looking at everything I don’t think we’re as far down the line as uh the Big 12 certainly um I was at the Pack 12 when the prospect of private Equity was brought to the board and at that time there didn’t seem to be an appetite for it although certainly times have changed since then and I think that will be certainly a gateway to how folks think about private equity in college sports so we have begun conversation and most of it honestly is a learning process for me I do not claim to be an expert in private Equity but what I’ve gleaned so far is an influx of cash in exchange for payback against your future media rights and future revenues catch JJ and Alex afternoons from 3: to 6 presented by G2G bars a 975 the KSL Sports Zone you’re locked on to H sson and Scotty CH that’s right on 975 the KSL [Music] Sports hands at Scotty 975 the KSL Sport Zone 136 means we’re running a bit late which means we got some work to do it’s time for number 50 hands 10 down we’re out of the 50s after today it’s gone so fast already I know right counting you down to the start of the college football season here is number 5-0 this is the top 60 and 60 60 as the Zone counts you down to the start of the 2024 college football season and now it’s time for today’s selection as voted on by the local sports media and you the fans we wrap up the first 10 selections of the countdown with another trip to the hill to focus on a defensive lineman who continues to improve every year as a youth after seeing time in every game last year he should be a major part of the youth defensive rotation this year at number 50 from the University of Utah 6’4 305 lb offensive tackle aliki viahi University of Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham aliki viahi has done a great job in a uh rotating role at defensive tackle between him and uh three or four other guys we got up front at that position he gives us uh quality reps week in and week out this is the top 60 and 60 presented by five-star painting on 975 the KSL Sports Zone hands checking in at number 50 aiky May well get ready because this is the first of many defensive linemen that are going to be coming off the board for the University of Utah yeah and probably a pretty good spot for him I actually I think wrapping up the 50s for a guy that is a true rotational guy but could be a starter probably across the board um would probably start at a lot of other schools in the country yep he would start for BYU he would I I don’t know exactly what UT tused situation started and then you could safely say he started any other D1 FCS across so he’s he’s there and deserves to be in the 60 and he’s played a lot of years for Utah now he’s played three seasons and he’s racked up 40 tackles and he’s got six tfls and he’s got five sacks and he’s got five or six batted balls and he’s he he just is that engine that’s like all right need a breather but we need somebody that there there’s not going to be any decline in productivity it’s a leaky yeah now I don’t think that he likes that role but he didn’t transfer no you would hope that he doesn’t like that role you would hop that he wants to work out of that role but he didn’t he didn’t leave to go find greener pastures which makes me believe he loves the program he loves uh Luther Ellis and Lewis pal and that defensive scheme and he’s gonna stay and be a huge part of whatever Utah does this season there’s something to be said for staying in a place where you feel comfortable you like the coaching you like your teammates you like the fan base you love driving the truck you love everything that goes along with it you know you want to be the guy yeah but also there’s like hey I like this here I like it I enjoy it now look we haven’t talked to Leaky about that but I could see like you know yeah I could go go to the Mountain West or I could go to BYU or I could go somewhere else and be the guy and be a starter um or I can maybe still get that here fight for it like crazy but also be in a place where I’m comfortable and I like you know my situation and I respect that as well too and I think that’s exactly it and I think he’s going to scrap for every yep every rotation he gets and meanwhile Utah’s like depth for days man I don’t think he gets depending on what s pppa and Junior tuna with their where their health is I don’t think he can crack that the starting role and I’m I’m not saying that he can’t get an NFL opportunity as a rotator we’ve seen it in the past where maybe not a draft pick but you get a free agent signing and at least you get a shot to go do it was silver Singa he was a starter wasn’t he uh I believe so yeah yeah I think he was I think he did start for at least one season I’m just trying to think of a rotational defensive lineman from Utah that still got an NFL opportunity was penini maybe penini I think yeah I think he ended up starting to his final season I I know there was silver was right there on the edge though was he a consistent starter I don’t think so I don’t think so either and I don’t think P penini was either yeah but that’s what I’m sure that’s what eliki is hoping for yeah because otherwise you leave and you go get the start and you get starting reps and starting film but also like you mentioned like I’m I’m in the Premier defensive line program and if I just go out there and put reps out everybody’s gonna be like well he’s still still killing it but it’s going to be hard all right let’s get to it good the bad the ugly right here on the Zone it’s time to saddle up and talk about the winners and the losers this is The Good The Bad and The Ugly now here’s the good good the bad the ugly brought to you by RGS exteriors and construction obsessed with quality results hands I’m going to bounce what we had for the good out a little bit we’ll get to it hopefully in sports youlette but breaking news in the NBA World JJ reck according to Adrien W narowski and other reports is the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers that’s quite the drop off from uh Hurley to JJ reck who may look J AJ good broadcaster big podcaster good NBA player but a his first head coaching job ever is going to be coaching LeBron James and one of the most signature franchises in all of sports good luck with that I don’t even know what to make of this it almost feels like the Lakers got to a point where the bus family is sitting in a room like we can’t have anybody else turn us down yeah yeah we yeah we cannot have another public that’s a really good point yeah that’s a good point like we have to go with somebody who is absolutely goingon to say yes to this because we cannot that’s a public embarrassment yep so let’s figure out who’s going to say yes and let’s not miss this time yeah and make sure LeBron’s okay with it and I’m sure that LeBron was probably in the family’s ear saying hey look I like this guy and I feel like I can use him as a I could be the Puppeteer and I think he could dance for me and I think we’re going to be just fine just don’t let him make any real Personnel decisions and don’t let him really draw up scheme just put a clipboard in his hand and let me go let me cook I don’t know what JJ can say to Anthony Davis and LeBron James and Russell and the crew that’s going to make difference nope not not one bit not one bit at all well good luck with it he’s you said four years four years yep well so and he’ll go make his millions he was already making millions oh yeah he’ll be fine he’s already made Millions he played an eternity in the NBA just in in terms of NBA careers the question is not will he be fired it’ll be when he gets fired does he get it a year does he get two years how long does he last I’m going to set the over under at uh at how how long was Darin ham one year yeah January of not this season but the following season does he make it two full season give the under two full seasons with the Lakers you say no give me the under well I don’t know the bus family can’t pay out yeah that’ be the only way he they’re not loaded with money and if JJ was smart he said yeah I’ll do this but let’s is make sure you’re giving me a lot of time I mean I’d like to go past the LeBron era if I could yeah and let me work with some young guys give me a couple draft picks let me see if I can develop somebody he’s not coming in this like Jeff Saturday to be a complete embarrassment oh you know he he doesn’t want to be mocked and ridiculed and this be his only shot he of course in in his mind he’s got to know that that broadcasting opportunity will always be there for him yes some you lose but he he he could go 0 and 82 next year and he’ll still be courted by every broadcasting group still be in the seat yep I don’t know man it almost feels like he’s thinking yeah I could get paid for a hobby or a project let me just go see yeah a lot of guys they just go see at the high school level and I feel like JJ reck is going to just go see at the NBA ba level with LeBron James yeah I’m just going to go have some fun see how it works out with the Los Angeles freaking Lakers you know who’s really the biggest logo you know who’s really on the hot seat in all this is Rob plinka general manager because questionable hires questionable Acquisitions questionable trades um is LeBron’s Yes Man like if this ends poorly which we all believe it will that dude is most likely out of a job yeah should be and deservedly so all right there’s your good let’s sneak in the bad now the bad good the bad the ugly right here on 975 the KSL Sports Z well tough weekend yeah the Major League World losing their hero losing an [Music] icon hearing from multiple celebrities I it’s I didn’t know a ton about Willie Mays I’ll be honest I’m I’m just is not the baseball historian but that is a name that when you hear you know its legendary status yes and this morning when I was putting together some notes and I went back and and looked at some of his accomplishments it really drives it home 24 time Allstar 12 time Gold Glove winner Rookie of the Year two-time NL MVP played for Lloyd’s Giants between 51 and 52 and then went from 54 to 74 um I know that he served in the military and in that time of service he missed some seasons and served our country well and then came back and wrapped up a career with the the Mets and retired at the end of the 73 season and Scotty here’s his numbers he finished with 660 home runs 3,293 hits and finished at a 302 batting average yeah and Willie May passed away at the age of 93 um probably one of the most notorious signature um plays in all of Major League Baseball history Lloyd wouldn’t you say that over theh shoulder catch over the shoulder basket catch every kid that plays baseball tries to do that uh tries to relive that play essentially that play you make that play that’s what you try to do yeah by by the way if you haven’t seen his his the Netflix uh uh documentary uh say hey Willie May I highly recommend going watching whole world news a 975 the KSL Sports Zone We Got the Whole World in our hands you got the whole world hands also scy 975 the KSL Sports Zone we’ll have a little whole world news here in a second but before we do that hey RSL picking up another win last night 15 consecutive games without a loss and you have a chance to see him coming up next caller number 12 801 575 Zone that’s 801 575 Zone you’ll win a pair of tickets if you are caller number 12 to see R Salt Lake versus the Houston Dynamo coming up July 3rd at America first field it’s crazy to me Scotty just whole world news it’s crazy to me that somebody can and buy and own a band’s entire catalog I know right and this is not just any band either this is one of the alltimers Sony is acquiring Queen’s catalog and they are paying 1.27 billion for the catalog now that gives them all the royalties rights all the recorded music they somebody wants to use it in a commercial they get the rights to that all their distribution exactly they they get all the the money and all the return and they’ll make their 1.27 billion back oh yeah but it is crazy to me that somebody can own something that other minds and and and abilities created and Sony’s going to own it and I couldn’t help but think to myself if Scotty could own an entire catalog Eagles it’d be the Eagles Eagles yeah 100% you’d want the entire Eagles the entire catalog yes it’s got to be a money maker I mean you do hear Eagles attached to a a lot of different things and I would like somebody you know somebody calls up like hey I’ve got this movie Blockbuster we want to use Peaceful Easy Feeling I’m like all right it’s going to cost you 1.2 billion yeah do you could you get the Eagles for more or less than what they got Queen oh a lot less I got to think Queen’s Queen is incredible music and it’s so versatile too like it it’s just such a part of pop culture and there’s so many different songs I mean you can go you know a fun song Like Fat Bottom girl or you know like you know another band that is really versatile that you would not probably think their catalog be worth but I bet is worth a ton is kiss I mean how you I have a kid and you have a daughter that have been listening to that I was made for loving you which is one of their worst songs they ever released when they flirted with for a second but it was in that movie Fall Guy and they played it over and over then you got all these kids are like oh that song is it slaps what what are the kids gas gas it’s it is it’s it’s hot right now for these kids yeah kiss is a big money maker Eagles it be but I think Queen is I think that that is the big yeah you know one of the biggest arguments am man and I have gotten in I told her I said oh you got to hear this song because I love their song bicycle yeah and yeah it’s dumb and it’s repetitive but it’s catchy and I’m like babe you’re going to love this song and she’d never heard it and I put it on and I want to ride my bicycle and I’m all excited about it and she was like this is the dumbest song I ever heard and I said get out of the car all right but we’re still driving I don’t care open the door J get out of the car jump out don’t you dare I love that song Hands at Scotty 975 DSL Sports Zone looking for the latest on the Jazz Utes cougars and Aggies we’ve got you covered this is H Olsen and Scotty G on 975 ESP Sports [Applause] [Music] up H Olson Scott Gerard 975 the KSL Sports Zone final hour of of the program let’s talk a little NBA Howard Beck senior NBA rider for the ringer kind enough to carve out a few moments for us on a day where looks like JJ reck is now the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers Howard your initial news first off thanks for hanging out with us we really appreciate it but your initial thoughts uh with JJ taking over the lake show gentlemen good to be back thanks for having me um I’m intrigued I you know I I I think it’s a really interesting hire and look there’s no no one in the league and I don’t think anybody who follows the NBA or follows NBA media listens to NBA podcasts I don’t think anybody would uh dispute the fact that JJ reick is a really really sharp basketball mind and his his ability to break down the game to uh explain the game to think the game I I I think is as high as you’re going to find and you know there are guys who when you when as players you can you can see it you can hear it in the way that they analyze the game and and and they check all the boxes right um You you want somebody as a head coach who can communicate who obviously has the xnos Acumen who has the kind of forceful personality that can can rally uh a group there’s all these different things you want in a head coach in theory and I could see where JJ reic checks almost all the boxes aside from experience put this experience to the side for a second we’ll come back to that um but what I’ve learned in 27 years covering this league is that sometimes there are people who fit the outline perfectly and we think yeah that guy looks like a future head coach to me I think that guy is gonna have great success and it doesn’t always work and I’m not saying that to cast any doubt on on JJ’s tenure with the Lakers it’s just more that we don’t know and so I’m never going to make any proclamations like oh great higher bad hire whatever unless it’s somebody you know you hire Greg papovich or you hire Phil Jackson you hire somebody who’s won a bunch of championships you know when you know you know when it’s proven but for a lot of coaches who are first-time head coaches either as assistants who get their first opportunity or who may you know come in through this other route as JJ has you just don’t know we didn’t know Steve cerr was going to be a success with the the Warriors until he was but Kerr like reick had a lot of those uh you know certain you know certain qualities coming in I think everybody thought Doc Rivers had great potential when he skipped straight from the broadcast booth to the Orlando Magic Once Upon a Time uh it took a while for him to to find his footing um JJ you know Jason kid you know didn’t do the broadcast dout but Jason kid like took his jersey off and two days later was hired to coach the Nets and it went badly with the Nets and it went kind of badly with the Milwaukee Bucks but Jason kid just coasted the Mavericks to the finals it just you know took a while for him to get his pudding you just never know is the thing so we were talking about this Howard Scotty and I were going back and forth and we were talking about the Dan Hurley turn down and maybe what that meant to the Lakers and I can’t help but think their second offer and their second public push had to be for a guy that would not turn him down how important do you think that was that the next offer was the guy that accepted I don’t know I I don’t think that stuff matters in the end um you you know you hire the person you believe in hire the person who who who makes the the the the best impression or the great impression um you don’t always get your first choice it doesn’t matter as long as the person works out in the end and even the thing where you know oh how’s JJ gonna feel if he knows he was you know there was this big public display of their Pursuit for Hurley it really doesn’t matter like JJ on day one I guarantee this question’s gonna come up at the press conference and JJ’s gonna say some form of the following Dan Hurley won back-to-back national championships and he’s one of the best coaches around and he’s got way more experience than me I would have tried to hire him first too and there’s there’s no shame in me being you know a second choice to him and nobody in the locker room is going to care either as long as JJ can can you know impress them and persuade them that he knows what he’s doing like that’s the job of every head coach buyin we he hear this all the time that phrase buyin it you don’t have to be the best ex’s anos person you don’t have to be the savest you don’t have to be the most forceful you just need buy it your players have to buy into your system and and try to execute it at the highest level whatever that system may be and and I think JJ’s got all the promise in the world in that regard I want to Circle back a little bit on Dan Hurley do you anticipate at some point he will be an NBA head coach and the reason I asked that does it say more about maybe the Laker job than it did the Yukon job that he’s like H you know what if I’m going to dip my toes in that water I don’t necessarily want it to be that job don’t know don’t know um don’t know what his career aspirations are don’t know how interested in the NBA he is uh as far as we all know that was the first time he’s really flirted with an NBA team or an NBA team has flirted with him could happen again um but yeah I I I don’t even know how to to guess on that one is coaching LeBron as big a deter as maybe some of us might think it is I don’t think so um you start with the cliche that there’s only 30 of these jobs because that matters and these jobs also pay really really well uh and and even better since Monty Williams got that contract a year ago everybody’s resigning for a lot more so no I mean there are plenty of people who would line up for that job and you know that Dan Hurley turned down the Lakers to stay at Yukon probably as much to do with with Yukon and his own career aspirations as it does the Lakers um again I don’t I can’t mind read there but you know I I I just LeBron’s got a year or two left you know I mean he’s turning 40 in December you it feels sometimes like this can go on forever but it won’t he’s going to retire at some point in the next couple of years so the person taking this job as JJ reck just has on a multi-year deal you’re as long as anything catastrophic happens you’re out lasting LeBron you’re the bridge to the next version of the Lakers built around Anthony Davis maybe or maybe it’s a tear down maybe they’ve acquired another younger Star by then who knows it’s it’s the Lakers it’s always a great job when it’s the Lakers now it hasn’t been a great job in terms of stability for the last 10 to 15 years um they’ve cycled through coaches almost as fast as anyone so but that’s not a that’s not a LeBron problem that’s a Lakers problem this idea that like oh like LeBron is some deterrent he’s one of the greatest players of all time and and all the great players all the Legends come with some sort of of challenge if you’re the head coach or if you’re the front office because those guys usually have you know a lot of Sway and some demands and whatever but Leon I don’t think is different than anybody else the real problem is the Lakers haven’t had the conviction of the stability over the years to say nothing of the fact that I don’t think they’ve done a part particularly great job in putting rosters together about around LeBron James and Anthony Davis and yes they won a championship along the way but um then they immediately blew up the roster that got them there being paid $65 million not to Works a heck of a gig if you can get it uh how surprised are you with the Monty Williams move not that he was just fired but the fact they fired him after one year I mean if you had asked me that question you know months ago I’d say h yeah things don’t look great but you know you got to give them more time the roster blows uh they’re they’re in a really weird place right now no one would succeed but it’s the way it went it’s some of the choices he made and it’s the fact that the that and look I don’t want to give the ownership too much credit here but it’s to the owner’s credit that he realized we’re going the wrong direction on every level here and so they didn’t just fire Monty Williams obviously they they fired the GM first and when you bring in a new GM in trade and langden of course the new GM is going to want to be able to pick a different coach uh or pick their own coach and especially after a year as disastrous as as what we just saw so you know the surprise is only in that they had to swallow a lot of money but most these NBA owners are billionaires now like the swallowing this 60 something million is you know pocket change so what I understand that comes down from Tom gors I know that they just hired Treon Landon and they were trying to get some things going but how about the timing of the firing feels delayed late I I know they were through some transition but why why wait to this point where we’re just a week away from the draft totally fair question and I think I think the timing is unfortunate I think teams need to be more decisive on these things um and I would say the same thing for the Lakers coaching search that that you know you don’t want to come right down to a week before the draft to finally name your head coach uh the Cavaliers are still trying to to name a head coach too so they’re in that boat like I I don’t think it’s ideal but you know teams have a process and so you just got to work your way through it and it took a while for the Pistons to decide to hire Trad in langon and then a while to decide uh oh Troy Weaver is he staying no actually he’s not like they did it such a in such a weird fashion even just rhetorically like making it sound like these were all just oh Troy Weaver has decided to leave us now like no you hired his replacement like so the whole thing has been a little bit clunky and then I don’t blame Tran for taking some time to evaluate everything before deciding to move on from Monty Williams like he you know he just was named to the job himself langon a few weeks ago um I think it was a few weeks the finals and the playoffs just you know make times completely obscured you tell me if I don’t remember what the date was but it I I just do think a new GM is going to come in they’re going to take some time to evaluate everything before going to the owner and saying hey I need you to swallow 60 something million because I don’t want this coach wow so you know we get in the media we get a little overreaction are on on recent events and last year at this time we’re like wow Denver is not going to win one NBA title they’re going to win a bunch of them they might win them in a row they’re just so good and Young and the way they’re built uh it’s hard not to think that to a certain extent with Boston as well based on the the youth and what they’ve got available to them um just just how special could this team be for years to come I am on record it’s out there somewhere on a podcast or maybe several as pumping the brakes on everybody’s Dynasty talk with the Nuggets um and it wasn’t because I had any issues with the Nuggets it’s it’s just it’s hard to repeat much less become a dynasty and we need teams to win two because it two does not make a dynasty you need to win at least three in a certain SP certain span and so like we we need to stop doing this um do the Celtics have the potential do the Nuggets still have the potential each of these teams to win multiple in the next three to five years yes I but nothing is guaranteed injuries come into play salary cap comes into play we’ve got a new collected bargaining agreement that has what you have I’m sure heard of the second apron coming into play because that’s going to make it harder for teams to retain talent and AD Talent uh we have six champions in six years hasn’t happened since the 1970s we’re in a time of extreme parity and volatility and it’s ever harder to keep a team together and to to just sustain over a three to five year period so Celtics are incredible and and they’ve got youth on their side they’ve got everybody under contract um and they absolutely have the potential to repeat they absolutely have the potential to become a dynasty but I I wouldn’t jump there just yet just as I wasn’t prepared to jump there with the Nuggets a year ago I’ve fallen in love with Joe moula you know it’s a guy that’s three years younger than Al Horford that plays for him and four years younger than LeBron James and many years younger than a lot of guys that play in the NBA and here he is kind of beat to his own or walking to his own drum and creating his own path and being his own guy but still holding a high standard give me your overall just thoughts and projections of what he pulled off in in his postseason record and the run to this Championship it’s pretty impressive and and yeah I mean listen he’s definitely a unique individual very quirky um strikes me sometimes as taking himself maybe a little too seriously I hope he loosens up over time in year one I thought well this is a guy who’s really young who’s only even been an NBA assistant for a couple years before being promoted to the head of of of the bench and here he is with one of the most storied franchises in all sports and with all these expectations I understood why he might be a little bit self-serious and uptight uh at times in year one uh now that he’s won a championship and it’s two years in I I hope he he loosens up a little bit up there but he’s different he he’s wired a little differently but he he knows his stuff he’s really smart about the game he believes in his principles and his players have have bought in we’ll use that phrase again and you know look but we’d also be remiss not to note that he got to build on a team that was pretty far along when OKO was suspended an ultimate dismissed and you know there were strange times and and again it’s to missoula’s credit like he was pushed into that job you know on on Eve of training camp basically promoted and without the ability to hire his own staff in year one and and so again it’s really impressive the way he has handled it all since day one weird circumstances challenging circumstances um and was following guy IM udoka who had gotten them to the finals in 2022 his first year as a head coach and who had instilled I think a lot of the the the defensive tenacity and discipline that had gotten the Celtics on you know onto the track where they could make this kind of breakthrough uh but Missoula absolutely built on it and had to get you know everybody to buy in all over again after udoka was was uh fired and so um it’s been really impressive and and especially given his age it is uh Locker cleanout interview um or you know end of season interview Danny a mentioned that you know the Jazz would go big game hunting if they could in the off season and trying to improve this roster and and try to get themselves back in the playoffs coming up next season with that said is there any Rumblings that there’s any big game available uh to be had even though the Jazz have a ton of assets and and uh some ammunition to work with I mean it’s going to be all the same names that we’ve been talking about for months you know are the Hawks going to move off of one of their point guards Trey young or Deonte Murray will the Cavaliers move off of one of their guys your old friend Donovan Mitchell or Darius Garland uh will the Cavaliers move off of one of their big men presumably Jared Allen um are the Nets holding on to male Bridges uh stubbornly I would say um you know is Paul George leaving in free agency like we’ve got all the you know plenty of speculation and plenty of big names that could move around this summer in free agency or trade but it’s usually less than the number of players we actually talk about I don’t know that there’s any big opportunity there and I’ll say this and I don’t mean it to sound like a hot take I think there’s more likely of the Jazz taking a step back than taking a step forward like if somebody made them a sweetheart deal for for L low marinan that wouldn’t surprise me either because the fact is this if you look at where the Jazz are right now and you look at the teams ahead of them and you look at the fact that the team like the Grizzlies were only down because of injuries you you know they were whatever top three just a year ago um they’re going to bounce back and the Spurs now have wyam are going to keep building around him and the rockets are already starting to make their leap where’s the room for the Jazz to be like a a trade or two or or one big game hunt away from being in playoff contention it’s really crowded and now there are teams that are on the downside right like the Lakers we don’t know how much longer they’re going to be a really good team but as long as LeBron is around they’re going to be in the mix the Warriors have age issues the Clippers have age issues and could lose Paul George but I just don’t don’t see where the path is for the Jazz to to make some swing this summer and be like okay we’re back in business um so I think it’s either something smaller around the margins or again not to be hot taky but if somebody made them a great offer for Lowry Mark in and it was one more step back to take steps forward later when there’s more of an opportunity to actually climb the sings that would seem like a plausible way to go too just on the topic of Danny a uh quickly Howard I’m I’m just curious how much credit do you give him for what the Boston Celtics just did a lot I mean it’s really interesting to to look at that like if you just go all the way back right this all starts with the Paul Pierce Kevin Garnett trade that they made with the Nets in my backyard um and they get that gets them the picks that ultimately become Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown so Danny AG made an incredible deal that got him two cornerstones two all NBA players um two guys who were you know are already now you know etched in history for the Celtics and and will be in NBA history as as you know potentially alltime greats and then he hands it off to Brad Stevens who you know Danny hired Brad Stevens as coach at a time when nobody thought Brad Stevens could make that leap from head coach at Butler to head coach of the Celtics and gave him a long-term deal because he believed in him Danny was right Brad Stevens then jumps to the front office and I think a lot of folks and this definitely includes me thought well okay great coach but like coaching and gming are are very very different jobs in this business and not everybody who can do one can do the other in fact most people who can do one really well can’t do the other and so I was skeptical but Brad Stevens has made some really smart Savvy moves and you know he’s the one who obviously you know gets them Derek white and makes the deals for porzingis and Drew holiday and he like he’s just P you know he’s he’s hit all the right buttons and has gotten the right Supporting Cast around the two guys that Danny a uh left him you know that that he had coached and now that he’s presiding over so um they both deserve a ton of credit Howard great uh conversation as always appreciate your time and uh enjoy the draft next week should be interesting and then of course the offseason where there’s never a shortage of story lines but we appreciate your time and uh hopefully you have a good summer thanks Howard appreciate it fellas thank you there he is Howard Beck senior NBA rider for the ringer right here on the zone I just tweeted out his comment it’s more likely the Jazz take a step back than a step forward I don’t think that’s going to sit well with jazz fans I don’t think it sits well with me yep but I understand it Lowry Marin and is a very fine piece so you got a guy who actually likes being in Utah He’s 20 what 25 26 years old in the prime of his career and uh and you’re going to move him I could see JJ reck and LeBron James in their first exploits together coming right at Lowry yeah because LeBron said it right from his own mouth one of my favorites in the league he’d love to have that that extra shooting and attention fall right on Lowry but I just hope that jazz never let go of that rope I don’t either yep all right hands and Scotty 975 the ekl Sports Zone this is Scott and Ben Anderson what’s the conversation we’ve always had about Utah if they only had a quarterback what we’re actually saying is Well they have everything else they just need like an okay player at quarterbacks they just need a guy who’s a little better than average and when you get that guy who’s a little better than average look at them they take off they’re unbelievable cuz one of the things you’ve said for BYU to win is they need to go get the Superstar quarterback and that’s always been their recipe for winning the problem for BYU even now at this point is if you go and get that best quarterback in the country I don’t know if that lifts everybody else now and I don’t know if BYU has everything else right now at that point you’re never going to have a good defense you’re never going to be more athletic than the other team so play your advantages so how does BYU do that I think they do have to sell that there’s a greater purpose to be at BYU and then I think they have to figure out how to find the next stud quarterback to go there for whatever reason here Jake Scott and Ben Anderson every day from 10: to no on 975 the KSL Sports [Music] Z the wheel is loaded and it’s time to talk some sports this is sports roulette with Hansen Scotty on 975 the KSL Sports Zone [Music] H in Scotty 975 the KSL Sports Zone hope you’re all having a great day hey fight fans the professional fighters league is making its debut in Salt Lake City June 21st hands coming up tomorrow at the Huntsman center with jaw-dropping Knockouts to lightning submissions every fight promises to be an adrenaline fueled spectacle tickets on sale ticketmaster.com and I know you’re fired up about this thing yeah I bought my tickets and I will be taking my wife Amanda my nephew Mitchell Olsen who is a big- Time fighter here in the state yep he’s he’s coming along nicely yes he’s got a big fight coming up too and my son Rock it’s going to be the four of us big fight fans a man is just fired up and excited I’m curious to what the what it looks like at the Huntsman Center we haven’t seen those kind of events at the Huntsman Center see what the setup looks like there yeah we really haven’t and but I it should fit really well I would think so with the bull for yeah I think it actually is pretty conducive to what they want to do there I think it would be a pretty sweet deal I would like to see something like that up the Spectrum oh yeah I think that would host well too don’t you I do too but get your tickets and come hang out with this tomorrow this is in my opinion the pro fighting league is just a it’s a season of fights and so these fight have to fight through a season and then they fight in a tournament for a million dollars and Klay Collard is considered one of the top three fighters to come out of the state of Utah he’s had long UFC contracts and he’s done a lot in the fighting World he’s beat the who’s who of that weight Division and he’s here that’s the main card of the pfl event coming up tomorrow yep all right let’s get to it time for sports youlet we take some of the biggest story lines we’ve not had a chance to get to we put on roulette will we spin it wherever that little ball lands is what we end up talking about so Lloyd with that fire it up real Salt Lake looking more like Real Madrid well another game hands another non loss but this one was a w ra Salt Lake gets the win that’s 15 consecutive non- losing games for raay Salt Lake yeah it’s that the unbeaten run is getting real deep I think it’s uh tied for the fourth in RSL history but Anders Gomez he knocks one in in each half and he’s doing his thing they beat Sporting KC and we all know that Sporting KC is always the thorn in the bottom of their foot so anytime they can stomp on them it feels a lot better they moved to 10 2 and seven on the the season and now they’re the top of the Western Conference they’ve gone nine 0 and six during that 15 match streak more wins than losses you know or no more wins and ties I mean and so so it’s not like they’re just you know you know pulling out uh just a point here they’re they’re they’re ratchet up a lot of points in this stretch they are and the I think the more incredible thing is if you just take the 10 the last 10 Road games they’re 40 and six in the last 10 Road games so they have not lost a road game in in 10 in that 15 game stretch it’s pretty impressive man they’re they’re it Andress Gomez is uh he’s fired up he’s doing his thing and they’ve got everything they need no they’re playing extremely well right now and uh again for a season coming in where we weren’t exactly sure what to expect and to see them play at this high level it’s really impressive to see all right there’s your good let’s get to the bad oh sorry let’s spin the wheel my bad hockey is here hands look I know it’s preseason and I know that uh we want to take it with a grain of salt but it will be a historic day at the Wells Fargo Arena in De Moine Iowa there’s your trivia question where did the ray salt or where did the Utah Hockey Club play their first ever game oh jeez you can say de Mo Iowa because that is where the Utah Hockey Club will play their first ever game September 22nd against St Louis again preseason and I know it’s preseason and in hockey preseason doesn’t matter that much but it will be a historic day when you will see that Utah Hockey Club take the ice for the first time then they come back the very following day to here to the Delta Center taking on the Los Angeles Kings and then they’re on a four game Road swing you’re going to be at Vegas at Colorado at San Jose at Anaheim and then you get to see the Colorado Avalanche come here to the state of Utah it’s going to be the Maverick Center because of some conflicting scheduling with Delta Center but you’re going to be at the Maverick Center against the Colorado Avalanche an opportunity to see your Utah Hockey Club against Colorado that’s it’s great to see this preseason release and that’s going to be you would think that that would be one of your most affordable times to come in and see the new hockey club before they get into the regular season yeah but overall man it’s this is really cool it is really exciting and and again historic moment for this Utah Hockey Club and for the state of Utah and for sports fans here in the state of Utah this is about as good as it gets right there all right uh and again I think it’s okay to have some pretty decent expectations for this team not Stanley Cup expectations but uh depending on how free agency goes uh from what we’ve learned in a lot of conversations with people you don’t necessarily expect draft picks to come in and help out right away but there’s no reason why this team doesn’t I saved there’s no reason why this team shouldn’t have an opportunity to be making a bit of a playoff push I don’t think that’s unreason everybody we’ve talked to says that yeah every major NHL Insider says you’re a piece away you’re very close feels much closer than Utah Jazz by by quite a stretch yeah that they could be making the postseason all right hands in Scotty let’s get to it Lloyd spin that will Broncos may have finally done something right right I came across this story this morning had it in the good we kind of dismissed it pushed it back but this is uh I think this going to be a fantastic hire I’ll be interested to see what David Shaw can do and what their intention of hiring David Shaw is is this a friendship is this just a a relationship because I know he goes back with pton he goes back a long way with pton so I wonder if that’s a friendship hire didn’t they interned together yeah years and years ago he also throw in condesa rice who’s a part owner of the Broncos who yeah obviously has a ton of Stanford ties so this is a a big time hire I think but I just don’t know senior Personnel executive is that just it just doesn’t feel like something that matters that much am I being too sarcastic or do I don’t know I don’t know senior Personnel executive it just feels like hey we want David Shaw in the office here let’s just build something out for him yeah that’s what it feels like that’s what it sounds like to me but I I hate saying that but he’s also an influential person he’s very motivational very personable in all my interactions with him over the years he’s always been my favorite conversation at Pack 12 media day so it’s not going to hurt to have him in the building I just don’t know how much in the building he’s actually going to be will he be in the locker room will he have interactions with the players or is he in the front office pushing papers and pencils I exactly I don’t know yeah I don’t senior Personnel EX executive what that sounds like to me is he’s kind of a manager of talent and not so much in interaction with Talent
