What Do You Want To See The Mavs Accomplish This Offseason? | K&C Masterpiece

there’s a lot of basketball news to digest we talked about this earlier in the show in case you missed it Nico said doesn’t anticipate any changes for players that were like top seven or eight in minutes for the Mavericks this year then of course we were having some fun with does that mean in the playoffs or regular season because Tim Hardway Jr was third maybe fourth third in scoring so I bet he was top five in minutes he third or fourth in minutes in the regular season but he was ninth in the playoffs and then also the addition that they think Luca is going to at least play for Slovenia if he can he’ll do everything he can to play for them in the qualifying tournaments for the Olympics do you so and that is Nico saying that when you hear Luca’s confirmation is that that that’s where I’m like waiting a waiting Luca to say it sure be like you know what I am going or guys yall all right I feel like he’s going to wait till the last minute and be like hey I got to see how my body feels in Slovenia will be like hey no problem you can give us a call 30 minutes before the game and if you want to play we’ll bring you up yeah and and I think that Lucas in that same mindset of if there’s if my body if there’s a glimmer of hope I will I will play as long as I can now the thing is I do wonder when he’s on the court if he’s like I got to battle through this just the same way he was for the NBA finals or if he’s like you know what I I can take less minutes in these games you you’ve watched watched a lot of Slovenia basketball like the the passion that he has on the court I feel like he he displayed that earlier with Slovenia than he did in the NBA you’re right he it is that’s why I’m wondering Reggie I can’t remember you know which day you missed when I said this but I’m hoping that his Taste of the NBA finals and seeing Boston celebrate it on their home court and seeing the city of Boston because he had to go back to the hotel and just hear it and see it that his passion for an NBA championship goes up and maybe to the level of trying to get Slovenia the Championships that he wants to get Slovenia now something that happened and this is always like a little frustrating but I get news happens when it happens I don’t know like five minutes after we went off the air yesterday was that JJ reck did officially agree to his four-year deal to be the coach of the Lakers does this interest you or you essentially like I don’t care who it is I want them to fail because they’re the Lakers yes okay I’m interested because he’s never coached at all now Jason kid same thing in his career very shortly after he retired he became the head coach of Brooklyn right if I have his Brooklyn and it was horrible it was really bad and Jason kid I’m going to give him he’s a really good coach and I believe he’s a really good coach I’m I’m hoping I’m hoping that I don’t change my mind on that next year or the year after that but I do think he’s a really good head coach is he the best probably not the best but he’s really good and and I really like that he’s our head coach I think JJ reck is going to fail miserably and be fired in year two of coaching and it doesn’t mean that he’s a bad coach forever but I do not think that it’s a smart move to not have a person ever be an assistant coach ever really see that side of it and then go from playing and go I know the game I know all the players in the game I know the strengths and weaknesses I know where we can attack certain things I know LeBron James and Anthony Davis and all these things it’s like it’s a totally different job than to be on the bench as a player and to be in the game as a player and I just I don’t think it’s smart by organizations and here’s the other thing the Lakers are in a win Now situation what’s the what’s the point in hiring a coach that maybe needs a lot of help when you have a 40-year-old star and another guy who is and Anthony Davis at best barely barely in his prime at this point like as in it’s starting to get close to like he’s gonna obviously injuries but he could start showing a little bit more regression where he’s at in his career and I just don’t see how it’s a smart move and I love it because I think it’s a bad move what I think is a great move was what Oklahoma City pulled off yesterday we had a conversation and I feel like like I I’m not going to backtrack on that but pretty quickly I was like oh I don’t love that they pull off the one for one Josh giddy for Alex Caruso trade and look Oklahoma City had decided whether it was just because of the Mavericks or whatever else you had seen his playoff minutes dissipating and to get a defensive stud in Alex Caruso I thought that was a good move for them what the are the Bulls doing they get the Thunder have a trillion uh draft pick you can get a second rounder you can get a second rounder in there look like I couldn’t believe it was no picks they have Corey five first round picks next year in the draft I know five I know they won this year the 12th and then they have five first rounders the next year and they didn’t get one of them because you can even say we’re giving you our lowest first round pick in 2025 but they didn’t get up pick yeah and that being said if the draft is any good you know like that’s that’s always a factor a draft going to be good but I mean they could essentially roll out a B team of first rounders they’re like hey we’re just going to have team a team B guys don’t worry that their their bench is pretty good too they’re they’re pretty good there so they could do it I I’m looking forward to it I just feel like they were like this we also won a first round we’ll do it yeah and like I don’t even think he would have had to finish the sentence and they would have been like great but instead it’s a straightup trade Brandon is sad about this trade I know Josh giddy will get a run time with the bulls but I think he helps replace what they what they’ve lost in Lonzo ball with all those injuries but the Bulls just don’t care about shooting either it seems like I know this is a weaker draft would you rather have if you’re the Bulls would you rather have Josh giddy or would you rather have let’s just say the ninth pick in this draft cuz they said they wouldn’t trade him for a top 10 pick earlier remember we had that report y so let’s just say I’m not going to give it top five but let’s just say it’s at the end of the top 10 like say the nth overall pick or you get Josh giddy I think I would take the ninth overall pick I just don’t think Josh giddy is a good enough shooter but I understand the idea of yeah well he won’t have anybody to worry about and we’ll give him more time to play I would take the pick I honestly don’t know I’d probably take the pck just because of the timeline the the problem is when we start talking about picks one of the things we have to remember even especially in that range there’s a lot of dudes who are in for a couple years and then gone from the league and at the very least you have an NBA player with all of I mean even though there’s like the problems when you talk about his game and then the other stuff but uh he is an NBA player so I think that there there is some value in that I guess um I’ll take I’ll take the player that makes I think that is easily the safer Choice alth there are some there is some baggage with the player already so that’s another thing to kind of that that is true I I just wonder about like I don’t know if it’s Dillingham from Kentucky Williams from Colorado Philip palski from duke I don’t know if there’s just like a player out there that you were like I think maybe he can do something but to Reggie’s point and Cory’s Point all three of those guys in like three years he’ be like yeah good call which is interesting too because and I’m not saying that noik has nailed everything so far but Derek Lively he got right and Jaden Hardy looks like he can play in the NBA yeah especially for a second round pick we’ll find out about omx he’s supposed to play he did say he’s going to play in the Summer League this year so we’ll find out about him but so far Nico Harrison in in these two has done a pretty decent job last thing do you think Oklahoma City felt like we have to get rid of Getty to because of the off thec Court situation I I that’s I totally get why you asked that question I don’t think so because I think you saw this play out in the playoffs in terms of them scaling down as minutes I think they were already trying to say like hey this is the direction we’re going that being said what about the Caruso addition to Oklahoma City because like this kid this man he is a scrapper he and yeah I know and and he looks all of he looks all of 30 trust me I I can say he played for Oklahoma City’s uh head coach in G he played for him in the G League he’s a great perimeter Defender he’s a great defender in general I think this is a really big pickup for that so I agree let me now we know Shay’s their one Lou Dort is a I think a very good compliment to Shay and he’s a good compliment to anybody but I just think that he’s a very good compliment on that Oklahoma City team he’s he’s different than Caruso but also similar in Caruso when you look at strengths is and then you have K Wallace who showed a lot of Promise as a 20-year-old rookie who’s also a very good defensive player who doesn’t really need the ball so now you have three of those guys I’m not saying that’s bad but how do you distribute those minutes with three guys that are very good defensively not great offensively but have some offensive Weaponry in their game can I tell you what I don’t like about what Caruso has been doing the last two years his offensive game has absolutely been on the upswing especially from three and so I do kind of wonder if he would be more like if you just look at this last season you saw him take another big jump up I wonder if he’ll be more usable off I mean I hope not but I wonder if he’ll be more usable offensively do you think Dort comes off the bench or you think Caruso comes off the bench i’ I’d venture to guess Caruso that’s what I think too recently I’ve been thinking a lot about uh the idea of redundancy just in all sorts of things and and I know that a lot of places we try and like limit redundancies and just make things efficient but I think that what this thunder are doing is kind of smart where they have some redundancy where if one guy is going or if one guy isn’t going you have the optionality between them to get going and they have that similar style of play to where at any given point you know that you can get what you’re looking for from a a variety of guys there they’ve obviously operated with a big roster because they have a lot of dudes that could play so having some guys that have similar paths but that you can use interchangeably I think matters yeah I think it’s a good pickup I’m not disagreeing with that but I think to me what I felt like Oklahoma City was missing more than a Caruso was like a 6’1 really good player to go with their team so that’s the only thing is in a perfect world Caruso would be 6′ 10 and i’ would have been like oh no yeah we’re in trouble now a couple more quick notes for you Malik monk did in fact sign his 4year $78 million deal to return to Sacramento and then Reggie I’m guessing y’all probably talked about this last night I missed it I apologize for that how could you I’m sorry I did like the descriptor of the article from the ringer is essentially the Derek white Allstars of how you can take somebody that like you know might not be the biggest name in the world but can complete a contender and the one and we’ve talked about him that came up for the Mavericks was Jeremy Grant but then Mike I heard you talking about before the show not positive but you’re thinking maybe the Mavericks don’t view him as a fit yeah I’ve just heard I don’t know this I need to ask around first of all I need to figure out is he even available how available is he cuz I don’t feel wasting my time uh but Jeremy Grant I feel like I’ve heard I just need to confirm that the Mavs have not been not that they hate them but maybe they’re not the biggest fan of his and at 30 million a year yeah that’s a tough number and 30 years old yeah I think that has I think they’re looking to stay younger and keep a core together I can see that the only pitch I would make to them he would be like the Super upgrade swap for Maxi Clea I’m not saying that would be the trade I mean in terms of the playing time if they want to dump the salary you can do it for Hardaway junor and kleba like that does it that that gets you to the salary you need you give up a pick to to make that work not a first rounder okay at that 30 million a year he’s a $20 million player in my opinion so you’re having to overpay him by $10 million and you have to do it for 4 years and then you just mentioned is he going to be the same player at 3233 you hope so if you’re doing this trade but I am taking on a crap salary in a good player but a crap salary yeah uh no I’m not giving you any more picks my opinion but maybe they feel different if they do like the player then get future pick isn’t a big deal but if you’re like I’m not keen on the player I like him and I’m going to be paying a salary that I’m not crazy about but least three years but kba is a 40 game a year player he’s proven that he’s scared of the moments in the playoffs at times and then hardaway’s he’s not part of your top 10 guys on your team now so [Music]

  1. Depends which Grant I’m getting, if I’m getting Jeremi Grant who just wants 20 shots a game I’m good but if I can get Denver Grant I’ll take it.

  2. The Mavericks need more 3 point shooting they need to take a look at how the Celtics had all of those guys coming off the bench jacking up three's.

  3. A real 3 and D player not these pretenders. A 3rd creator scorer that's consistent. Get Thj and his Dad out of here

  4. This offseason needs to be find ways to get your below average veterans out of here especially depending on them both sides when it comes to playoffs

    Powell
    Kleber
    THJ
Green (trade asset / can develop )
    Morris (however he provides leadership)

  5. I would be willing to trade away the farm for Markkanen. Give them THJ & Maxi (27m of expiring contracts) and all the draft picks for Lauri (18m). And with the savings off of Maxi's deal I would bring back DJJ. I feel like Markkanen just isn't in the Jazz plans. Their window & his prime aren't coming together…he'll be 28 next season and they are a REALLY bad team. And he's on the last year of his deal, so might as well get a nice haul & some cap relief next year for him. Man, if they wanted Josh Green too…I'd hate to lose that depth but I would probably do it & hope like hell that OMax makes a good 2nd year jump.

I'm in an "eff them picks" mindset with the Mavs because they were 3 games away. So give me a 7 footer who is 40% from 3. Gimme a guy who averaged 23 on a bad team, a guy we can count on to give you 20 every night. I doubt he's as good as Maxi on the defensive perimeter but I would also like to see Lauri with Gafford/Lively & PJ/DJJ around him on defense and Luka & Kai around him on offense. If he's shooting 39.9% from 3 with the Jazz as one of their best scoring weapons….what's he gonna shoot when he gets those ain't nobody within 8 feet of you wide open Maxi shots?

And it would make Dallas the biggest team in the league. It would be an even better Wolves lineup.

  6. sign and trade djj, pj, thj, maxi, and picks for trey murphy, herb jones, and nance.

djj and pj kind of plays the same role i dont see them as a starter ever both of them cant handle the ball well, cant drive, cant attack the basket cant even finish proper around the rim an inconsistent shooter.

  7. 1) scoring, strong wing to start with PJ. He has to score and defend to cover up for Kyrie and Luka.
DJJ & Maxi come off the bench.
    2) lights out shooter to trade off Timmy.
    3) separate coach for year round 3ptrs shooting practice for Josh, Exum, Hardy, Maxi, and DJJ. One task – catch and shoot 3s to 50% in practice. Will see how they fail in the finals again.
