Inside Mavericks FA/Trade Rumors on Tobias Harris, Jerami Grant & THJ Trade Reports
Nico you you said you love the score and your your goal is to build this team for Championship aspirations when you look at the roster construction what areas would you say um needs to improve for this team really I think we have the pieces I think we just need to get better ourselves um I’ve since I’ve been here I’ve always um I say I but our our front office staff we’ve always been looking to to make it better so we’ll continue to do that but the core is intact um you know our our if you look at our top seven eight players that play the the biggest minutes I don’t see anything happening with that what moves do the Dallas Maverick need to make during free agency and is a trade for Tim Hardway Jr on the horizon and could this free agent be a fit for the Mavericks this is inside the Sports just about less than a week away from the NBA draft of course NBA free agency and the trade rumors are heating up when it comes to your Dallas Mavericks no shortage of rumors when it comes to this team fresh off an NBA Finals run looking to improve this team going forward and needing to put some pieces additional ones around Luca Don and Kyrie Irving to continue to increase the ceiling of this Mavericks team who of course made the NBA finals for the first time since 2011 losing in five games to the Boston Celtics but a team that had an incredible season and has a terrific Foundation laid for it when we look at Luca Don it’s the NBA a scoring champion a 349 and9 season his running mate Kyrie Irving averaging 255 and five on the year the emergence of Derek ly II the terrific rookie out of Duke who was tremendous on both ends of the floor the signings of course of Dante exom and Dereck Jones Jr particularly Dereck Jones Jr who will have some conversation about in today’s episode and the priority that the Mavericks are making him according to GM Nico Harrison and what that means for the Mavericks going forward also of course acquiring PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford the core of this team being in place as they continue to make improvements for this team and how did this team go about making improvements and what are we already hearing about what the Mavericks could potentially be interested in going into free agency but also on the trade market as we look at what the Mavericks are potentially wanting to do the Mavericks have made it a clear priority that they want Derk Jones Jr back in fact Nico Harrison the general manager and president of basketball operations talking about how much of our priority drik Jones Jor is going to be in terms of being the onea and 1B for this team going into this off season here is NI Harrison talking about Derek Jones Jr and the importance of him going into this off season you mentioned keeping the top cber eight players obviously D Jones is included in that group uh what’s your optimism as far as being able to work something out with him and do you anticipate that it will require some kind of tinkering to be able to get to uh a number um yeah I mean I I don’t know how we’re going to do it but he’s a priority he’s Priority One One a and one b um I think he fits in with our team he loves it here we have to figure out obviously the the the Dynamics to to get him to stay but yeah that’s a priority and we’ll do what we have to do to to get it done and so what are the other priorities this summer you mentioned 1 a 1B no I said he’s 1 a and 1B oh he’s w a he’s both I got you yeah so you can see from Nico Harrison how important Derek Jones Jr is going to be for their priority during this offseason the Mavericks are a projected tax team and have only the $5.1 million tax midlevel exception to sign Derek Jones Jr now they could potentially create some extra room in order to bring him back and you say Kevin how are they able to do that I turn your attention to Mark Stein who of course covers the NBA longtime NBA Insider on substack now Tim Hardway Jr who appeared at 79 games averaging 14.4 points per game the Mavericks are going to continue to renew their ability to try and trade the now almost 32y old in order to move him somewhere else Tim Hardway Jr his 16.2 million contract is one of the team’s few big trade assets because it’s an expiring deal going into this upcoming season and of course Tim Hardway fell out the maveri rotation during the postseason and you have already seen on social media how was Daddy’s out here popping off at the mouth about him wanting to see his son in a different place to have an opportunity to have a fresh start for his career liking post on the idea that Tim Hardway Jr and Max whatever you have seen so far it has nothing been as short in terms of what you’ve seen in turns of Tim Hardway senior expressing his displeasure and wanted to see his son go somewhere else else but the Mavericks have a chance with that expiring contract to move it on somewhere else to be able to create the requisite room to bring back Derek Jones Jr where you’re trying to get I would imagine above the10 million Mark in order to get that full midlevel exception to bring back Derek Jones Jr who of course became a real part of this team in terms of his defense and his knocking down of his three-pointers a career over 34% shooting from the three-point line this season for DJJ and of course his ability to finish and transition the high flyer and former Dunk champion found a real home for himself and the Mavericks this past season and Derk Jones Jr even talking about that throughout the postseason about how much he wants to remain in Dallas there will be plenty of suitors for him during this free agency period because of how much more he has increased his value on the open market given the skill set that he was able to show in full bloom with the Dallas Mavericks and you give Dallas credit for putting him in position to be able to show those strengths that he displayed throughout the course of the year and most importantly the culture allowing Dereck Jones Jr to flourish Dereck Jones Jr has talked about it plenty throughout the course of the Season as well that he had to earn everything that Jason kid was not going to hand him a starting role and give credit to Jones he went out and took it and became a really important piece to this team so when you look at what the Mavericks have from an asset standpoint they’ got the 16.2 2 million expiring contract of Tim Hardway Jr at 32 years of age they can move that on to try and find someone who will take down that money and be able to benefit from the expiring contract we mentioned with the 5.1 midlevel exception that they have right now looking to increase that in order to retain one a 1B in terms of Dereck Jones Jr by the time we get to the NBA draft the Mavericks will also have it’s 2025 and 2031 first round picks available to trade so they do have some things to be able to work with in order to potentially improve this roster the question being who do they decide to bring in to try and improve this roster which is important given what the Mavericks are going to be needing another guy that can defend but also can shoot from the three-point line to allow them to take some pressure off of Luca dodes and kyri Irving not only from a ball handling standpoint but be better at the point of attack defensively but also knock down threes especially with the amount of open opportunities that Luc and are going to provide that player and what they’re able to do within the Mavericks offense and most importantly on the defensive end be able to continue to help this team improve where they became one of the best defenses in the league but they did not have enough shooting when it came to the postseason to really compete obviously with the likes of the Boston Celtics in particular who bombed away from the three-point line even though they didn’t shoot the ball well great from three they made enough threes in enough key spots to be able of course to take out the Mavericks aside from the fact that Boston was just a better team in this particular NBA Finals more on this though on a couple of names already surfacing being linked to the Dallas Mavericks that could potentially be a fit one a quote unquote Perfect Fit according to this person and one already being reported as one having interest from the Mavericks to potentially join them this Summer as an unrestricted free agent potentially in a sign and trade but before we get there let’s hear from today’s sponsor of our video our podcast and let’s hear from Aura today’s video is brought to you by Aura do a Google thank you to today’s sponsor of our video and our podcast in Aura as the Mavericks continue their preparations for their off season looking to improve their team after making the NBA finals for the first time since 2011 falling short to the Boston Celtics as we get ready for the NBA draft but also for NBA free agency this team needing to find some floor spacing forwards and some three in deep perimeter depth as well to continue to round out this roster on Luca dones and Kyrie Irving to continue to improve the ceiling of this team going into this upcoming season as well and we’re already hearing some names be potentially linked to the Dallas Mavericks I put it out there on Twitter on some of the names that y’all are wanting to see potentially be added to the team I’ve seen names like Denny Adia Colin seon among others that folks of the Mavericks fans that are wanting to see be added to this team how they round out this roster based on the assets that they have available to them will be interesting to see based off of what they are capable of doing and more importantly how aggressive niik Harris is going to continue to be in fixing this roster we know that he has not been shy in abil his ability to improve this team and his willingness to improve this team since taking over as general manager and president of basketball operations he will remain aggressive and it’s going to be important for him in his front office to continue to have that same mentality because it’s different when you’re when you’re the hunter trying to go after winning a championship and not to say that they’re not continuing to go after a championship but now they are definitely going to be the hunted going into this upcoming season so if the Maverick front office keeps that same mindset by still remaining aggressive in terms of the moves that they are wanting to make while also understanding that teams are gunning for them based on moves that we have already SE be made by the Oklahoma City Thunder for example getting a time all defensive player in Eric Alex Caruso excuse me to join their roster after Caruso was traded to the Chicago Bull straight up for Josh giddy Alex Caruso providing much more defensive intensity and improved defense for a team in Oklahoma city that was already one of the best defensive teams in the league they still got to find a little bit more shooting as well but at the same time the example being that Alice Caruso is a move by the Thunder to be able to strengthen their position as one of the best best teams in the west and they were able to do so by moving on from a Josh giddy who fell out of the rotation and was relegated to the bench and was going to be part of the Thunder bench going into this upcoming season Maverick looking to do something similar by moving off from Tim Hardaway Jr who a guy who fell out of the rotation in terms of the playoffs but also necessarily was not played being able to be played on the floor Nico Harrison talking about how the Mavericks feel like they have the pieces in place for this team but now how did they continue to make those improvements going forward take a listen Nico you you said you love the score and your your goal is to build this team for Championship aspirations when you look at the roster construction what areas would you say um needs to improve for this team really I think we have the pieces I think we just need to get better ourselves um i’ since I’ve been here I’ve always um I say I but our our front office staff we’ve always been looking to to make it better so will continue to do that but the core is intact um you know our our if you look at our top seven eight players that play the the biggest minutes I don’t see anything happening with that so the Mavericks believe that their top seven eight pieces are good in the core of their Foundation is in place and we talked about with Derek Jones Jr being a part of that core for this team and the Mavs making him a priority to bring back this off season as well to be a part of the team going forward but what other names could be out there that are quote unquote perfect fits or guys are going to be available in unrestricted free agency that could be making a difference for this team if the Maverick decide to go down that road I point you toward 32 near about to be 32y old Tobias Harris a guy who averaged nearly 18 points over six and a half rebounds and 3.1 assists for the Sixers this past season Philadelphia of course trying to figure out what they’re going to do next to continue to build around Joel embiid it looks like they’re going to be a part of the Paul George sweep Stakes that whole Saga in and of itself has to be dealt with by the Los Angeles Clippers by the way that was a name that Mavericks fans were tossing around in my mentiones as a guy that they would want to come to the Mavericks that would be a crazy fit for the Mavericks they were able to get a guy like Paul George but he is going to be obviously commanding a ton of money but for a guy in Tobias Harris who we heard reported from Chris Haynes who will hear from here in just a moment reporting that the guy who just finished his five-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers now has a chance to get into free agency to move on we have heard from Chris Haynes that the Mavericks are one of the teams interested in the service from Tobias Harris and if you don’t believe me here’s Chris Haynes detailing it on bleach reports himself take a listen you know you got teams that I expect to have some interest in in uh in Tobias I will mention you know Utah you Detroit San Antonio Dallas and New Orleans you know Dallas and New Orleans those are probably have to be signning trade type scenarios but those are teams that I’m hearing that are expected to have some level of interest in Tobias Harris um this summer and um so Harris coming off a fiveyear $180 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers could be a candidate in a signing trade for the Dallas Mavericks says you heard him say there teams like the Detroit Pistons New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs all and Utah Jazz are all expected to have interest in Harris and he provides an interesting case because the question would be what kind of Market are we talking about for Harris and is he a guy about to be at 32 years of age who Chris Hayne says is motivated to prove people wrong be a fit with Dallas we know that he can shoot the ball from three can put the ball on the floor and can provide you a really legitimate thir scoring option alongside Luca Don and Kyrie Irving the question will be how does he hold up and does he have the mindset to be able to succeed in the postseason where the pressure is obviously going to be on and if you’re thinking about the Maris and what they have in terms of their core they’ve got guys now in terms of Daniel gaffer and PJ Washington and others who have been able to step up in the postseason while not having that tremendous amount of experience going into this past postseason Harris provides you a lot of that experience having been there in the playoffs now has he opportunity now to be a part of a team that can help increase the ceiling that’s something that would have to be determined in terms of his value where if you’re looking at the open market maybe a three-year $45 million deal in terms of $15 million per season maybe that’s something reasonable that the Mavericks could potentially do the question would be how do they continue to create the requisite room to be able to do that that’s where we’re talking about potentially a sign in trade where you’re looking about salaries such as Tim Hardway Jr maxi who’s in the middle of a three-year $30 million deal Josh Green who signed a contract extension prior to this season as well what kind of trade pieces are the Mavs potentially looking at and utilizing in order to move on you’re going to need spacing development as well from at least one big as well to be able to help with some of that so we’re talking about multiple needs that this team has with the assets that they were dealing with here we mentioned a little bit earlier that the Mavericks have their 2025 and 2031 first round picks available to draft Dallas ow Charlotte a top two protected pick of course in the first p in the first round in 2027 and Brooklyn an unprotected pick in the first round in 2029 so they don’t have control of their picks when you look at the years 2027 to 2030 of course they’ve had to make these moves in order to put themselves in this position and you’re looking at the first round swaps in 2028 and 2030 those two first round picks at 25 and 31 are potential utiliz Iz ation pieces for the Mavericks going forward here but all the question will be how much more can this team improve is Tobias Harris a guy who shot over 35% from three a fit for the Mavericks on the surface based off of his numberers shooting nearly 49% from the field this past season for Philadelphia he provides you a legitimate third scoring option for the Mavericks then we also take a look at a guy Jeremy Grant now Jeremy Grant is the quote unquote perfect fit from Kevin oconor if you look at one of his recent pieces talking about the Derek white Allstars in terms of players that could be tradable pieces to teams that are contending and looking to get themselves over the top and the Dallas Mavericks who see Jeremy Grant right now there’s been reported interest in him over the last couple of years or so a guy that’s importantly right now in the middle of a fiveyear 160 million deal going to be making over $29 million this upcoming season the Mavericks would have to move to get him as well and again we’re talking about the amount of money that the Mavericks are potentially dealing with here but if he is a guy for some Mavericks fans who could be a potential fit as well Jeremy Grant could make some sense given the fact that he’s a guy that can score has a lot of talent in his ability to score and receiving kickout passes from Luca dones and kyri Irving could really be a fit along side with the Mavericks here he would get a lot of open looks in this offense for the Mavericks but at the same time are you willing to commit to a guy who’s going to be well over 30 by the time that contract ends and it’s an ascending contract by the time you get to the end of Grant’s deal of that fiveyear $160 million deal in the final year of it we’re talking about him making over 36 million dollar as he continues to get older is that something if you’re the mavage you’re wanting to invest in now there are other Pie in the Sky ideas like a Mel Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets who would be a perfect ideal 3 and D guy for the Mavericks who’s terrific on the defensive end and has turned himself into a terrific score as well but you’re going to have to give up a boatload of assets to even get the Nets to even have that conversation which in a lot of ways they’ve been unserious with over the past year or two when it comes to the conversation around Bridges but that just gives you an idea of some of the names that are potentially out there and what other names could be floating around for the Mavericks who’ve got the assets to be able to deal with some of this in some form or fashion but at the same time still limited now they’re willing to continue to spin into the luxury tax and be a second tax apron team then that could open up some things for them from a roster standpoint but part of this in this new era of the NBA is that you’ve got to be able to develop Talent young cheap talent to produce for you for years to come and that is why it was so important to see the success of Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington because they’re two guys at 25 5 years of age under controllable contracts that are still on the ascent We Believe for this Maverick team going forward and your ability to see a Derek live of II who now at 20 years of age has turned himself into a terrific player in his rookie year and again appears to be on the ascent as both an offensive and a defensive player you’ve got to have cheap young talent to be able to surround your Superstars and here’s something that we’ll have to get into as we not only talk about this summer in terms of the free agency and the trade moves at the m could potentially make but also going into next year as well because if you remember at the end of this upcoming season Luca donic is going to be eligible to sign for what right now is a fiveyear nearly $368 million contract extension which will give him the richest contract in the history of this league and not to mention Kyrie Irving already at 32 years of age is going into that second year of his three-year deal as well do we start talking about a potential contract extension for Kyrie Irving during this upcoming season or at the end of next year as well in order to keep him around going forward for the Mavericks because those are things as you start looking at the financial ramifications of what they are trying to do to continue to extend this window for the mavers in terms of a championship opportunity but also looking toward the future in terms of paying Luca donic but also when it comes to Kyrie Irving as well it’s going to be important that the pieces that they add are costeffective pieces young talent that can not only remain long term with this team but also fit into the timelines Luca Dodgers and Kyrie Irving given what this Maverick team is going to have to figure out going forward as well so those are a couple of other interesting nuggets that you got to keep in mind when you’re thinking about not just from an asset standpoint what they may need to utilize in order to acquire certain pieces in order to move on from a Tim Hardway Jr you’ve got some second round picks that you can utilize as well but at the same time thinking about the financial sense of all of this when it comes to Luca donic at the end of this upcoming season and also Kyrie Irving as well thinking about another contract extension for him for him to remain around long term as well but we know what the needs of this team are in terms of another playmaker another guy that can score while continuing to add defense but also finding a way to shed that contract of Tim Hardway Jr whose contract of course is an expiring one going into this upcoming year and if they can the Mavericks can be in position of course they don’t have a first round pick in this year’s NBA draft they’ got the last pick in this year’s draft as well at number 58 we know about the rumors of bronny James and whether or not the Maverick will potentially draft him if he’s available there but the overall point being is that there are some things that this team can do creatively and it will be interesting to see over the next several days as we get closer to the end of June what pieces and names will be connected to this team given the assets that they have what they could potentially use to acquire those assets and whether or not they’ll be able to create the requisite room to remain competitive to provide an offer to darrk Jones Jr to stay within Dallas you heard Nico Harrison discuss it that they’re not sure how they’re going to do it when it comes to retaining the services of Derek Jones Jr but they want to do so and that is their number one priority this offseason from a roster management standpoint so a lot to be figured out and discussed over the next several days when it comes to this team and what names will be connected moving forward but if anything else we know that the mavers will remain aggressive in terms of their ability to try and improve this team and now moving forward who what and how the Mavericks will do it will be an interesting watch across the rest of the league knowing now that the target is firmly on the Maverick back having reached the NBA finals and that to me is the most fascinating part about all of this is how the Mavericks will attack this off season being the hunted versus being the Hunter and making sure that this team stays where it needs to be in terms of a championship opportunity window remaining open around the Superstar and Luca dones but all of that will factor in over the coming days as we get closer to the NBA draft and of course an NBA free agency and the trade market and more plenty of more on this when it comes to the MAV at the course of the next couple of weeks as we get ready for the NBA draft in NBA Thanks Kevin.
I'm going to be highly disappointed if they simply salary dump THJ in order to sign DJJ to a much higher deal. DJJ is a valuable role player, but there was a reason he signed for the vet minimum this past season. The only reason his value is so high is because he's playing alongside Luka & Kyrie. I saw a trade on another youtube channel that shipped Dwight Powell away to add space, and that was enough to offer DJJ the higher 12mil Tax contract. That would still allow THJ's 16 mil salary to trade for another player.
Is Paul George a possible get?
We need that third guy that can shoot 40+ from 3 and create his own shot off the dribble. This will be very important when teams try to shut down our big two! I love PJ, but he’s not great driving into the lane where it gets crowded.
I admire what Nico has done, but if he plans on DJ staying in the starting lineup, the Mavs are fucked. They won't get past Denver, the Wolves, or OKC (and can't possibly beat Boston)l with such a shitty starting lineup (offensively). No amount of practice is going to make 3 guys (who AT BEST are 20ppg) suddenly into 40ppg players. They couldn't break 100points against Boston. If you don't fix that, you can't win.
I trust this Mavs Org. They already have a big three with Lively Luka and Kyrie. Lively will get better
Get Tobias he’s a good 3rd option
