really arrives in full force on Wednesday I’ll be in the building at Hawks HQ covering everything going on there and then I’ll have a show after that as well so full wall toall covers as always please subscribe to the show and without any further delay here we go with part one with myself and Tower Jones I am joined Now by fan fav Tyler Jones for everybody knew this was coming little pre-draft highly anticipated discussion how are you sir how you sir you’re watching on YouTube qb1 Kurt Cousins oh no FAL are are the Falcons gonna make playoffs this year how how we feeling how we feeling Brad I am definitely gonna get a call from my locked on manager about opening this podcast with Falcons talk he won’t be happy about that but I understand it is what it is Falcons win the division PS win the division that’s all I got for you it might it might be it might be an eight8 and one but they’re gonna win the division I’m just saying hey as long as they make playoffs make to playoffs all right with that out of the way in the first minute we’re recording this Monday I said that on on my intro as well just to reaffirm that for people that don’t know when we’re recording it’s Monday night not a ton of news today I did a show yesterday with some catch-up Intel stuff but mostly I want to talk to you about all these things that are going on in Hawks land right um I purposely waited a while to get your evaluation on this draft class we kind of talked around it last time we talked on the podcast you’ve tweeted about it people that follow you there will know a little bit more about how you feel but you know as I’ve said I know you agree it’s not a vacuum like they’re making this pick in concert with everything else and uh 48 hours ahead of time as we record this how are you feeling as resident on budsman Hawks fan on this podcast I mean I’m not gonna lie to you like kind of wishing the draft would hurry up and get here because it’s been uh it’s just like the takes man the takes are just getting to me and I’m like yo I I’m just I just want you know made so we can actually talk about actual what’s what the team is actually looking like instead of theoretical what it that would be nice do XYZ ABC like it’s it’s kind of like it’s really hard to even discuss who they’re goingon to piit like like in relation because we don’t know what the team we we kind of don’t we we don’t know what the team is going to look like what direction they’re trying to go in other than we’re pretty sure they’re trying to win as many games as possible next season uh but outside of that uh it’s kind of hard to like pinpoint what exact how they’re going to do that how they’re going to build this team what they’re looking for uh in possible trades and this is all relates back to who they can get who they’re going to take with the first pick or if they’re going to trade the pick so it’s kind of it’s kind of like it’s kind of like you just I I know me I’m I’m kind of like talking to myself like about different scenarios of what’s going on so hopefully hopefully we can like parse through like instead of just rambling about uh nonsense there’ll be some rambling I’m sure but no that’s it’s a good way to put it and I I get it number one overall pick it’s in the National Spotlight the Hawks are getting talked about more than usual right now but it’s mostly about the pick it’s either about the pick or it’s about try and de Jon and that’s kind of it that’s the whole discussion nationally and that that does matter I’ll be the first to say that decision does matter a great deal um but there’s other Nuance things like what do you do with Hunter what do you do with capella um if you draft to Center either either SAR maybe or especially with kingan what do you do with the Kong Wu all these decisions have to be made in concert with one another plus like you said you know there’s this thought that keeps bubbling it’s driving me crazy about the Hawks just suddenly going into this full rebuild and there’s just no evidence at all that they want to do that from ownership on down Tony Tony went in kicking in screaming to the last rebuild I don’t think he’s gonna do one anytime soon unless he’s no just out of the game wants to sell the team yeah and I you know we’ll we don’t have to even do this for very long but uh they also I don’t think Quinn Center has any appetite for rebuild either it it would be shades of I think if they did that now if they got if somebody talk Tony into it um there’s the draft thing with San Antonio you owe three picks in a row that’s hard to rebuild when you do that you have a coach that might go full full bud and what I mean by that is when there was that one year where Bud was still the coach when they were rebuilding and Bud was like basically getting me out of here at the end of the year he was not going to be doing this for very long that might happen with Quinn anyway uh I think they’re gonna try BL flat out quit on the team that one year that was he did not want to be here it was very clear he didn’t want to be here uh that that season was easily the worst in Hawks history to me uh I actually had less fun the year before but I understand oh the Dwight oh I mean that’s different come on like that’s a different category that that was bad for different reason it was unenjoyable to watch the The Following season because how bad that season was there was literally nothing good about that team except for John Collins well well I was going to say if people I know in fact I know there are a lot of relatively recent Hawks fans and by the way welcome no shame here whatsoever if you’re a new Hawks fan jump on board I really enjoy you being here and being a fan of the team uh that 2017 17 18 season the number one and two guys on the team in usage were Dennis shudder and tan Prince that’s all you need to know by that team in in a nutshell it was a it was the start of the rebuild it was it was before Trey there was one year one one year of rebuild that was pre- tray and that was it and they were and didn’t didn’t get Dennis get suspended like the first Dennis yeah Dennis had the uh had the arrest I was driving a car and it was a Sunday morning and anyway it was there was a lot going on there tan was the guy everyone decid it was awesome because he was the only guy on the team I’ll say the long story for for long but anyway different time now look I’m not saying it’s a zero% chance that they do some major overhaul stuff but I don’t think they’re going to be going into the this season trying to keep try to get Cooper flag because it would be very hard to do that you would need several different dominoes headlined by a trade with San Antonio for your own pick back to even think about that so that out of the way let’s just do the draft stuff first we kind of weave in and out of this too draft yeah I I wanna start by saying this and I’ve said it on other show just to friend the conversation everyone still as that this money night when recording everyone that I talk to around the league still believes that it’s realistically three play three players that the Hawks could draft at number one if they stay there it’s Reay it’s kingan and it’s SAR and I will say there is some real skepticism that the Hawks are going to take SAR I know there was there’s some reporting out there that happened in the last couple days that the Hawks might just say screw it we’ll takeing him anyway I wouldn’t mind that personally in my own evaluation but people around the league don’t really buy that that they’re seeing it as maybe kind of a smokescreen attempt by Atlanta to say please come trade for this pick Washington or whoever else whatever that’s kind of the landscape right now ree as I’m recording this uh our friends at FanDuel have him as a pretty big betting favorite to be be the number one overall pick now crucially that doesn’t mean he has to go to the Hawks that means he has to be the more pick that’s that’s a different thing the Hawks traded the pick or the Hawks make the pick that is all combined into one so we could talk about other guys if you want to whether it’s re Shepard or Steph Castle or whoever you want to say but it it does seem like boring a trade down and they could trade down still that is definitely a possibility it’s gonna be one of those three guys but Landry but Landry said he’s not trading down BR he didn’t say that though that’s the thing and I know you’re teeing me up to make me mad and I get that but that was poorly aggregated and hopefully listeners to this show that I played that I played the clip on purpose I didn’t I didn’t relay that my own words I played the clip so people would hear it because I immediately saw a bad aggregation there was this thought out there that Landry said we’re not trading the pick no no no all he said was as of today we’re like prepared or whatever word he used to pick number one over we are PR speak ready or or yeah planning to or whatever it was and it’s like yeah he has to say that even and by the way it was maybe true but that that became Landry field says Hawks will pick number one it’s like that is not what he said that’s what he said I have to give it to Landry though like he is incredible at saying absolutely nothing and so an artist always lead when you say nothing like that so often unless you’re used to how he talks it can lead to Mis agregation like because he’s not using clear language right like he’s not just saying I’m gonna do this or that he’s he’s hedging which what which is what he should do I mean right I have I have poked fun at Landry plenty for him saying nothing even in moments when he could say something I made because he but this time around and I’ve said this before but he no no GM is saying anything in that interview two weeks before the draft whatever it was week and a half before the draft number one pick no one is giving you good content that no one it wouldn’t matter who it was it could be darl M it could be the most engaged GM in the world he’s not GNA he’s not gonna say oh really love alexar because of this this and this he’s not gonna say that no one’s I thought I thought he slipped up not mentioning AJ Griffin but we can talk about I personally I I mean granted on 18 on 29 Kevin kind of pushed back on that but like to me I found it very interesting I was standing by Kevin yeah I I think you’re that was a good exchange people should be listening at 29 by the way where Tyler is a regular listen to that show and I uh especially that conversation gota dive into the players look you can push back if you want to anyone that follows you on Twitter knows this I I’m going to guess estimated that you are you were on the Donovan clinging Camp based on what you have said on Twitter is that accurate cing Kong baby 2024 2025 let’s Go’s okay so let’s let’s frame it through there so there’s there’s a little bit of reporting uh Brian wior in fact who I I trust Brian’s a good reporter he said today he’s hearing basically that he’ll be surprised if if the Hawks take kingan at one which is something I’ve not necessarily surprised but there has been a feeling all along that the Hawks like clinging but also they’re not like in love to take him at number one if they don’t have to maybe they will in the end of the day I’m not I’m not ruling it out but uh there’s this kind of weird conversation happening about like we love clinging except for not enough to take him at one in this bad draft um that aside that doesn’t this part right here makes no sense to me but yeah go ahead well I’m just saying it’s out there I’m not saying it makes sense because I I tend to agree with you if he’s your guy he’s your guy you just and you take your guy but um and look I don’t have him number one I think you do based on our conversations but I I have I have always said if you have him number one you just got you just gotta take it you don’t have to get that cute you could trade the pick sure but if you’re taking a guy at number one take the player that’s number one on your board that’s the way it should be um you’re clinging pilled I’ve made fun of you about that before I don’t think you’re wrong but you are all in so what is the pitch for you about Donovan kingan being the number one pick or the guy the hwks end up with on Wednesday the pitch is pretty simple um on a permanent basis he’s pretty much if he’s not the best player if he wasn’t the best player in college basketball the last two seasons now he’s he he was up there on a permanent basis that of course is the hook with kingan is can he play more than 24 plus minutes a night and I actually think he can um I remember when I tweeted earlier in the process that uh Clingan might just be a 24 minutes Center that was before I watched any of the games but I tweeted that based on the fact that he he he only played like yeah he’s only play like 1300 minutes between he did not he did not play as much as a guy normally would play that’s that’s that good at college level yeah and and what what I didn’t know was that um and this is why it’s good to have you know good to follow along and learn more stuff about cling and one uh his freshman year was the covid well the year before was the co season and he was just way out of shape like he had gotten gotten way out of shape he had to work himself into shape that’s why he he didn’t play as much even though like when he played he was absolutely dominant and like Kevin Pelton had him number one on his stats projections or like either up there alongside like wimy and all like in a deep draft like cling was right there with these guys and there was real like there was real Lottery Buzz with kingan last year in a deeper draft uh so like and then he came back the following season and while he didn’t play as much as you wouldn’t want like he just got a lot better like he doubled his assist rate and decreased his turnover turnover rate he haded his turnover rate at the same time um and like was still the dominant Center uh dominant defensive presence for the best team in college basketball while also and I found this very important the thing to me that separates kingan from even like somebody like Dereck Lively who’s shown to be a very good player in this league uh is that he maintained a high usage like he had a 25% usage on the best offense in college basketball last year uh and if you watch the games it makes sense Yukon they run an egalitarian offense but kingan makes a lot of reads and they trust him with the ball both as a passer and as a scorer like they would give and it they didn’t have many games that were close but when G when when teams went on runs and they need to get a bucket they go to Cle just because he had the size advantage and you knew on the post up he’d get a good possession out of it that and to me like his offense separates him from somebody like to me personally his offense combined with his Elite rebounding which for whatever reason rebounding is just not disgust it I tried to particularly particularly like total rebound like if you get a a center that can protect the rim and be an elite rebounder at the same time on offense and defense they’re not really that many of those guys like who who play a lot like flat out it’s not easy to block shots and get rebounds you’re usually picking and choosing one or the other capella as we’ve seen through the years as his athleticism has gone he challenges less and less shots at The Rim not saying he’s not still a good defensive big but like it’s just you gotta pick your spots kingan kingan picks his spots but because he’s so freaking huge 97 standard reach seven foot seven wingspan yep he can contest shots actually block them or he can contest without fouling by the way and still be in positive rebounding position where where he’s boxing his man out at the same time the there there’s just there’s just not that many centers that can do that like period in the game today and all them all those that can do it are the Elite defensive players in this league and like to me like my pitch for Clingan is the defense plus the offense defense quite frankly it’s like you’re just not going to get a guy this size you know through trade or free agency like you’re just you’re just not who who’s who’s like a real basketball player like he’s not a he’s not a tall guy like he’s not a big guy playing basketball he’s a basketball player who has him to be big like especially on the offensive end so much what he does on offense reminds me of Marcus Saul like ear like late Marcus Saul or what Andrew Boi brought to the Warriors when he was 29 years old when marcusa was like 28 29 years old Clint is doing this stuff at 20 like that you know the the ability the re that he’s making off these dhos is not something I’m used to seeing from a center this young like these are like he’s playing they’re running the offense through him it it’s kind of I’m not I’m not comparing him to joic I’m just saying the skill level of I can process the game as a point center now I’m not saying that’s what that’s what his role will be in the NBA level but I’m saying just the ability to do that at any level is impressive centers don’t play like this anymore Brad and and and I look at I look at how Quinn wants this team to play the hulks like he wants his centers to be able to do this stuff he wants his centers to make reads to make decisions to take the decision load off of his guards so that they’re not having to make every read every action every decision if the hwks truly want to change the way they play to me I’m like Clingan more than anybody else in this draft class is gonna help improve their defense because I I just think he’s just a better like at at this stage of their careers I think honestly kingan is probably a more impactful Defender the capella he’s not a smarter Defender capella experience means a lot and like there there’s stuff King is gonna have to learn through experience but I’m just saying O overall through an 82 Game season I just find myself seeing looking at cling and I’m like he’s just he’s just gonna be better he’s just bigger he’s just going to contest he’s just going to be able to contest more shots in a way capella no longer can like you the potential to get somebody who who is as good as 2021 Clint capella defensively I I to me I’m like I can’t pass that up if I’m the Hawks your defense has been so bad you have to improve the floor of you gotta raise the floor of your defense and like nobody else like even more so than Alex SAR who we’re gonna talk about in a second I just find I just think Clingan just brings a complete package I’m not worried about the oh but scheme Versa I’m like he’s a smart basketballer I I I trust his basketball IQ to put him in the best position possible to be a be a good a great defender in the NBA and pretty soon as well today show is brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook and summertime means baseball basketball and much more you can bet it all at FanDuel Sportsbook FanDuel American America’s number one sports fanduel.com lockon and start making the most out of your summer with FanDuel official Bing partner of Major League Baseball obviously you like Clingan a lot and I I thinkone None of what you said is wrong that’s that’s key I feel like and I’ve alluded to this but I think kingan’s defense is probably the most projectable safest thing in the whole draft in any of any Prospect is C’s in particular Rim protection but also rebounding like him him him as a drop Defender protecting the rim rebounding is like the safest thing in this whole class I think and more just just in as side like yeah his ability to box out bigger players will free up the lane for somebody like Jaylen Johnson to grab and go like the Hawks had like Jaylen didn’t do that jaylen’s transition game wasn’t there as much as you guys thought it was even he had the highlights but it wasn’t a consistent part of that’s right because because he’s grabbing contested rebounds all the time because he has to because it’s him and like it’s like capella and and if capella and and Jaylen AR in the game at the same time jayen like period so so like to me I’m like you get clinging in there are easier opportunities for Jaylen to grab and go like that could really boost jayen stock as a player but but continue BR I didn’t mean yeah no no you’re right no it’s it’s a good it’s a good point to make and um you know the scheme versatility thing is funny because I know you and I have both been on the I would keep Trey train if they keep Trey you’re only so scheme versalo defensively anyway all due respect I think I think tre’s come a long way defensively but he’s not gon to be switching like you know it’s not gonna be a thing that they’re doing I think the only small guard in recent history who’s been a part of a switch switchy scheme is ky lari he’s like 250 plus he’s a fire say he’s a fire hydrant so that’s not quite the same thing and yes the the Warriors used to switch more um but Steph Curry is big I was about to say Steph’s a lot bigger than Trey and also you know he was the weak guy for sure but we’ll save this for later but I think that’s your points are go well on the sche if you’re building around Trey defensive versatility doesn’t exist aong is a switch big how many how often have we seen aong switch out on the guards guys like come on and there are ways and just just to put my Glenn Willis hat on for a second there are ways to switch two through five there are still way and you can still do that and by the way I think there’s this caricature of kingan as this guy who’s Zack Edy standing under the rim respect to Zack Edy kingan is a lot more mobile than Zack e like CL King’s not a total non-mover yes he’s not Alex SAR on the perimeter nor is he ever going to be but he he can show on a screen he can run he can move like he’s not he’s not a total stiff look man you can watch the Alabama game on YouTube him playing against a five out team yeah he was good at that game he he shut the paint down and Alabama didn’t make every op contested three-pointer they took they would have won by like 30 instead of 16 like they still BW him out like I like here’s another thing with clean like Beyond like the metrics like bot score plus minus like he’s over 15 like that’s just for an underclassman that’s the true Elite category um no and by the way to your point he’s number two uh you mentioned Kevin Pelton earlier Kevin does these fantastic like really appreciated translations and only Reed Shepard has a better stat projection than kingan in we’re g talk about Reed we’re GNA talk and Reed Shepard shot 50% from three this year which is the biggest part of that in addition to Steel rate anyway so kingan the translations are great there um defensively I think we’re you and I are pretty much in agreement there is there is a little bit of room and I think you would even acknowledge this like he’s gonna be really good defensively there is room between that and what he could be defensively which is like top five defender in the league I don’t know if he’s going to get there that does matter like really good versus elite elite is a difference that does matter at this point in the draft I would argue like because you you mentioned you mentioned capella 2021 different player but I I have argued that was that he was the second best defender in the league that year was absolutely that if Clingan is that then I think he’s pretty clearly the number one pick in this class you can’t I for me you can’t project that as like a median I think he can get there which is which is notable to me the other side is I know you like his offense more than everybody else seems to um and I I like his offense too I think more than a lot of people do I think the passing the functionality the way he seals people like the size the size like he’s not gonna you mentioned like yic and all that stuff he’s not gonna be like the post hub for you in the NBA I don’t think but he gets such great position and that leads him to be able to finish easily like those duckins like easy I say easy it’s easy offense it is easy yeah I he makes it easy versus like it being easy because he’s so he’s so big and he positions so well and he is skilled like you know as much as I love Clint Clint’s Clint’s finishing has not the strength at this point in time right and we all joke about that it’s true now add a lot more touch and add you know you mentioned the standing reach the seven seven wingspan he could just drop the ball in it’s not a difficult thing I don’t personally care about the three-point shooting I know that that’s like an area that people people are thinking about might happen and look maybe it does but that that’s a bonus for me it’s not a yeah have to have it but is that is part of that why you like him more than the most more than the rest because you like his offense more it seems the offensive rebounding is incredible from him like the numbers are great guys his freshman year he had a 19% offensive rebounding rate I can’t describe how ridiculous that is it was 133% when he was playing real minutes but still like on like just to have the talent to do that at as a as a freshman and then back it up as a sophomore as oh he only did 133% last year like that’s that’s Elite like that’s Mitchell Robinson yeah he has the second just to give you a stat he has the second best offensive rebound rate in Big E history for his career and the Big E has been going for a long time I I what I don’t what I don’t get is like it’s because Andre Drummond ruined rebounding for everybody like he just did he ruined the rebounding discourse because he’s a he’s an actually crap rebounder because he doesn’t box out and so so like when he’s on the floor like his team isn’t actually a great rebounding team on defense offensively he’s a good rebounder but he doesn’t finish he doesn’t make the proper decisions what excites me about clean as an offensive rebounder is he doesn’t force the issue he also he’s just bigger like if he if he’s in position he’s just gonna lay it in because he has real touch with both hands by the way uh but if he’s not in position he’ll just pass it out and reset the offense yep or he’ll pass out to an open shooter like Al Horford used to do for KY Cory back in the day I know shout out to Kyle you know but like you know that there’s value in that is this is stuff the hwks have not had since Al Horford left period I’ve not had and also the screen I mean we mentioned he’s a great screen Setter which every gu you whether it’s Trey or not I think it’s going to be Trey but even if it’s not Trey he he makes every guard better with the screen setting he knows how to set screen he’s not rushed he’s just he’s in control of that and look I don’t think he’s going to be a star on offense like that but doesn’t have to be he doesn’t well and that’s and that’s fine what you I mean I think that might be where we diverge a little is that I have a hard time seeing that and that’s fine like I don’t think we we agree though that he doesn’t necessarily need it to return real value here no no no he doesn’t need because if he just does the little things well the screen setting the rebounding the finishing with the rim those three things alone makes him a valuable offensive player even if it’s not maybe going to blow you away as far as like a average 25 points a game kind of thing like I maybe maybe he could do that if they wanted him to but like I don’t know I watched Marcus saw Mike Conley be near contention every year running running their offense together running their two-man game and I feel like Trey and clean could produce something very similar with higher upside just because I think kingan has more scoring juice than marasol did at the same at the same AG of their career um and like Mark eventually developed the jumper like I I you know marcusa wasn’t this jump shooting center until later in his career I’m not saying you know it’s one of those things but it’s like it was never that important to his game like you know it he his game was he was a valuable offensive player because of his screening passing basketball IQ like it’s kind of similar it’s kind of similar to hor for they’re different players but uh Marcus sa’s best defensive years were before he started to shoot yep like he shot later in his career out of necessity kind of like I he loss a step offense same as Al like Al’s Peak was that time with the Hawks he wasn’t shooting back then the I mean he was shooting mid-rangers a little bit but you know what I mean like he became much more like the last few years like Al Horford on offense is mostly a screen Setter and a three-point shooter that’s what he is of the best catch and shoot three-point Shooters in the game which is it’s it’s wild but yeah I mean it’s uh the marcusa thing is interesting like that’s a comp I haven’t heard a ton other than I know you told me that offline and we’ll we’re doing it again online that’s a lot to comparison marcusa was lnba two or three times like that’s he was a defensive player of the year that’s a heck of a but it’s the it’s the combination of skies and skill level and like not the vertical pop you expect from a center but like just a just a b like just a good player who’s who plays with his like thinks the game and that I feel like the hwks don’t have enough of that type of energy on their team like only Trey truth be told only Trey really thinks the game at a higher level and I feel like cleaning could help take some of that pressure off of Trey if they’re keeping Trey so if they’re keeping Trey is uh certainly part of this discussion as well all right that is all of part one with 1. 100% agree with Tyler. Cling Kong is my pick. Since Sarr is a no go. Please don’t pick another underperforming wing.

  2. The Hawks better not pick Clingan unless they trade back. They need to shoot for the stars instead of getting a low ceiling guy. 😢

  3. I’m not gonna lie, as someone who has already mentally prepared to not draft Sarr, I’m really starting to warm up to Clingan. Sure, he doesn’t have superstar upside, but he’s a defensive beast, he’s better offensively than he’s given credit for, and his fit next to Trae is phenomenal in theory.

  4. Saw clips of a game with Zac R. Running pg. He had a nice handle also a good feel for the game from the pg position. The main knock on Risacher was his handle and shot creation. He showed he was able to do both.

  5. Wow, we have lowered the expectations for the #1. You guys might as well said "we might as well settle on Clingan, he's not that bad.😢😢😢. … Hawks shoot for star potential this draft please.

  6. Lively not being able to post up lost them that final series. If Clingan post up that ruins a lot of teams rim protection gambits
