season officially underway first dat you should Circle the draft next Wednesday on ABC and ESPN then Saturday the 29th the last day for team or player options to be exercised and that includes LeBron James then free agency begins a week after that and then Vegas summer league in mid July as we welcome in Sebastian Christenson to talk about it all and Sebastian it’s kind of funny right we’re talking about you know hey could the Celtics be the next great Dynasty before we get to that let’s talk about the most recent one we’ve seen the Warriors potentially losing a Cornerstone franchise piece in Klay Thompson who’s looking for a new deal somewhere maybe still in the Bay Area take us into that situation there’s nothing tougher for a team Gary then walk in the fine line between giving a franchise Superstar a proper farewell and knowing when to let go negotiations between the Golden State Warriors and Clay Thompson have gone nowhere as of late Warriors do want him back at the right price but do we’ve seen no progress yet Klay Thompson is 34 years old he hasn’t been the same since his last knee injury especially on the defensive side of the ball where I thought he’s one of the best perimeter Defenders on the NBA I understand weird side of things they want to avoid the second tax apron and they are facing a tough decision I also understand Clay’s side of it potential suitors for clay might be the Philadelphia 76ers with their ample cap space Also the Orlando Magic but are clay team exceeding what they think of their Market you know that’s a different question but as of now G I really think we might be heading to the end of an era in Golden State you mentioned a couple of those teams could be suitors for this next guy we’re going to talk about too Paul George player option remains on his current deal with the clips should George and La split though what are some possible scenarios and destinations uh for PG the eight time Allstar I’ll tell you what they’re not offering a four-year Max extension to Paul George and that tells us a lot as you said George has a player option and the Clippers have been reluctant to give George an extension as rich as Kawhi Leonards despite all his injuries I am confident that another team will offer Paul Georgia foure Max extension Clippers know about this and they’re not doing nothing about it which to me is fascinating you know we shall see if at the end of the day it is a 76ers with their c space if it is the new Knick they would have to go a different route a trade might be even possible at the end of the day but if George lands in New York or in Philly it will definitely Shake up the East he’s 34 years old but he still has Superstar traits if that happens only then and only then Gary Boston will have ample competition in the eastn conference of course the rich get richer out east Paul georgem man he’s still productive despite being 34 years young 22 points per game that was second on the Clippers last season ahead of James Harden who averaged 16 points per game he too is a free agent heading into this off season basically what we’re trying to say is the Clippers have a ton of decisions to make B want start focusing on free agency and some teams doing some work here um I am want to focus right now on the Paul George situation which will probably be the big a big headline I’m not going to assume anything about what players may all of a sudden become available that we aren’t talking about now but um Paul George is certainly the most fascinating free agent um the Clippers are allowed to negotiate with him now and sign him or agree to an extension or a new contract he could he could sign up for five years uh actually can he sign for five because I think he runs into age 38 whatever it is he could do a deal with the Clippers right now but he hasn’t which isn’t a surprise because he has been able to do with deal with the clippers for months and hasn’t gotten it done and what I am interested in um about Paul George is that it seems pretty obvious that he is going to get at least one big offer probably more but unless Joel and was really just messing around like he he pretty much said we’re going to offer this guy a contract which is what you’d expect um and if the Clippers know that Paul George is getting a Max contract offer from anywhere especially a place like Philly where he could walk in and you know he he was on his podcast this week um and he said something interesting actually kind of two things interesting he said and I’m paraphrasing chasing a championship isn’t necessarily the number one thing he wants to be on a contender but chasing a championship isn’t necessarily the most important thing and then he specifically pointed out that fit would be important well Philadelphia is a championship Contender if they sign him and the fit as their top Wing player who can play with the ball without alongside Maxi does make sense so let me ask you this bontemps if Philly is sitting there with the money to offer him a Max with a spot and a and and that fits those criteria why are the Clippers not matching that offer to make sure he doesn’t get to free agency well I mean there’s a couple reasons you could think of right one is when they signed Kawhi Leonard to this contract back in January whenever it was and sign him to a three-year deal for $150 million basically we talked about at the time that said a precedent that and McMahon has been the one beating this drama especially not only is it not Max dollar not Max years and so if you’re Paul George and by the way it’s sort of Forgotten because he’s had a Hall of Fame career that you were in the building when this guy had a catastrophic leg injury and God he’s totally recovered from it and has been an incredible player again for years like one of the one of the more remarkable things in in recent memory that he came back from that has been fine so if you’re Paul George and you can get a four-year deal for $0 some million dollars and an extra $60 million than what Kawai got probably I mean I would I would want the extra $60 million personally if it was me um and but if you’re the Clippers like we’ve talked about not only is there a precedent there with the with the kawhai thing there’s also this second apron looming over everything and the Clippers very clearly wanted to try to stay out of the second apron to reset stop you real quick y I’ve had some some fans of the Pod admonish me because they’re tired they don’t I know that this won’t be all of our listeners they don’t understand the word apron and the concept of the second apron so at the start here could one of us try in very basic terms to explain the apron I’ll explain it I’ll explain it right now so there’s the salary cap right where you go up to a number you go under the C like the Sixers are way under the cap right so you can spend up to the salary cap to sign players if you’re under the cap then there’s the first luxury tax line which between the salary cap and the luxury tax there’s a gap I will look up the exact number but it’s around 10 or 15 million this year where it might be even more than that where you can um all right so for this coming season the salary cap is $141 million the luxury tax line is $171 million so you have $30 million to spend where you’re over the T over the cap like the Indiana Pacers for example they signed Pascal seak and we’ll talk about that later they’re going to be over the salary cap this year but they’ll be under the luxury tax you can operate in that space paid $180 million in taxes this year for a team that did not make the playoffs didn’t even make the playin um and that’s just not going to carry forward and made the play but yes I’m sorry they made the plan yeah they make it out of the play didn’t last very long um a one and done play in appearance correct sorry they um have I know they floated under the radar you might not have ESP might not cover coverage in of them clay averaged uh 18 points and shot 39% on three that those numbers are good enough to get what do you think how much a year if that was just a vacuum player X I mean 18 20 somewhere in that range I think could could even be up to 25 I think in the right scenario more than midlevel he’s still one of the best three-point Shooters in the league and he he’s still he’s not the same defensive player he was in his prime but he’s still a solid defensive player on bigger wings and he’s a bomber from three like that’s still a very valuable good player he’s just not Hall of Fame Prime Klay Thompson and so this year he earned um 40 what 44 million uh something like that we have that 40.6 I think it was what he expects to do prep 43.2 million I was right I should have stuck with my first number 40 40 okay so um he’s obviously no longer a $40 million player so and he’s obviously not thrilled with the offers that golden state has offered him we don’t know exactly what they are um he UNF we’ve heard that it’s a year offer I think that’s again it’s about as much about years as dollars in some of these cases and it’s fair to point out that when Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green recently took pay cuts NE neither of them in fact I think if you put green and Wiggins pay cuts together I don’t think they would average the pay cut that they were that they are probably going to want clay to take down into the 20s um but when Wiggins and Draymond took pay cuts they got four-year deals yes um and if you’re clay uh those are interesting factors and um I think you even said this Bon tempson if it was not you I apologize um this isn’t so much about money as much as it’s about respect and also to point out that clay had which are synonyms in the NBA by the way right but also this last year there were games where clay got benched down the stretch in favor of Brandon pky in favor of Moses moody in favor of Jonathan kaminga well and he he was pulled from the starting lineup and transition to a six-man uh rooll Midway through the year so you know if you’re Klay Thompson you’re sitting here think hey man like dude yeah so Paul George is talking about fit like you know what’s Clay’s fit there with where with where their roster is um well and and again you get to the Wiggins contract four years for more than 100 Draymond four years for 100 and if you talk about you know the same way that the uh the Clippers tried to set a prent with Kawhi Leonard that can work the other way Clay’s like hey the the sacrifice pre quote unquote sacrifice precent has been set by this franchise at four years for 100 some odd Mill so okay you want me to sacrifice where’s that offer yeah I mean that yeah go ahead the other complicating Factor on the Warriors is you’ve got this Chris Paul $30 million team option which pickup date is June 29th um obviously I’m sure when they traded for him they thought that they would probably cut him and say goodbye I don’t remember what his what his guarantee is it’s a like few million guarantee I I’m not sure there’s yeah I think this one’s n last half guaranteed totally non guaranteed I’m checking right now and if you’ve got Klay Thompson yeah it’s totally it’s totally non- guaranteed through June 28th okay they could agree to a contract extension with uh or a new contract with Clay between now and June 28th it’s over a week um but if they’re goingon to lose clay for nothing if klay’s walking out the door they may want to hang on to Chris Paul either to play him or to trade him and so what
