ESPN’s Bobby Marks On The NBA Draft, Mavs Offseason Plans | GBag Nation
we welcome in Bobby marks of ESPN front office Insider we got the draft tomorrow it’s uh we’re in the thick of the offseason time now Bobby what is what is the one seed for thing that you’re most interested in over the next maybe 48 Hours yeah I mean I think you know certainly there’s a lot of players that um you know outside of the draft of course you know there’s a ton of guys still we’re still waiting on as far as with with player options um that comes on Saturday there’s a deadline there I think you know certainly what happens with with Paul George in um with the Clippers as far as um whether there’s a new contract in place by the time we get the free agency or certainly if he um you know certainly probably one of the best free agents outside of LeBron um you know be becomes available here so I think I think that just because there’s you know there’s certainly a lot of different um you know things in play whether you know if if he doesn’t return what happens with with James Harden if he returns what happens with Philadelphia all that money they have there um so I think he kind of you know has a little bit of the keys to the free agency I think that the draft is certainly intriguing which is Wednesday and Thursday with you know the unknown I mean it’s it’s one of those rare drafts where it’s it’s pretty wide open here hey Bobby this how real is the conversations everybody’s hearing about bronny James did he do that much you know my background myself I was a NFL scout and so the combine was always important to us but how much did he really help himself at to combine yeah I mean I think you have to take a big picture approach um on bronnie I mean he was a McDonald’s All-American for a reason sure before he got the USC I think you have to take that into account I think you have to take into account um the Nike hoop Summit that he played in last year um in in Portland um I think you have to take into account him not playing for five or six months after um the incident with his heart last um July right um um did he help himself in Chicago I think he did you know I think you know I mean are you if you’re basing it solely off that I think you can probably get yourself in in some trouble there um I think he’s got a role in this league down down the road um will he get drafted probably um I don’t get caught up you know I know there’s a lot of people saying he only get drafts because his dad and all I don’t I don’t I don’t get caught up with that I think listen he you know he’s undersized he’s an undersized two guard um six what two and half with shoes um he can probably guard two positions I think he can be a um I don’t want to say Elite level Defender but I think he can be an NBA level Defender um that’s kind of what his role would be right um he’s a you know he’s a second round Prospect I think the second round is always a crap sheet because it’s not always about who’s the best available or um you know you know best need and you know it’s Bas based on okay we what do we have roster wise um who would fit great locker room wise who’s willing to kind of go to the g- league who’s willing who’s a developmental project maybe two years from now so I think there’s a lot into that there but you know I mean as I said like he was a a highly touted Prospect you know before he got to USC um and you know I think the you know the health incident certainly set him back it’s like almost like you know like a guy ter I don’t want to quate like you know an ACL but you know you Tak a year for how to get back from that so I’m I’m intrigued I got to sit down and and meet with him I think he’s terrific I think he’s a terrific Young man um I think when you’re you know as I said when you’re picking in a second round it’s it’s your 13th 14th 15th guy right it’s your kind of your connectors at the end of uh at the end of your bench well Bobby when you when you start to you know how much when you were in the front offices and stuff and you’re sitting across from kids like the the guys did the Bloodlines like Dad was a player mom was a track athlete I mean that to us was always I was digging question after question I know you’re probably the same way did did you did you find yourself asking this kid a bunch of questions even though you knew the dad kind of a thing or was it that kind of were you getting that kind of deep with the kid no I don’t know about um you know I listen he he gets it right I mean he he gets it that everyone like it motivates him that a lot of people have probably counted him out it motivates him that basically that he will get drafted because of his dad right um he wants to you know you know as best as he can you know he wants to carve out his own identity you know through this process does does he go before 55 at the Lakers I don’t know I mean probably for the best of the kid I would say he should right like for him because basically if he’s staring at 55 we know what the narrative will be right he’s only picked because of LeBron and stuff so I think you know we get to you know I’m I’m 51 now now I’m I’m I’m meeting with kids who’s I Dad we had yeah that’s exactly yeah you know like but certainly like listen holidays with with Drew and and Justin yeah there’s a there’s a bloodline there kenyon’s um you know Kenyan Martin’s son KJ um Gary Trent Jr like there’s a you know there’s a pedigree there as far as guys who’s had parents who either you know played professional basketball or played you know you know football Bobby march with this year on 1053 The Fan I think from a Mavs perspective going into the offseason the big question is Derek Jones Jr How likely do you think it is the Mavs are able to keep DJJ yeah it’s it’s just a matter of I think there’s a couple ways you can go about it I think you know um You’ have to create some room to to go out and just from the flexibility standpoint because the most you can offer them is where you are financially is $5.2 million and this is a guy that’s I made 26 million in his career so he’s of course you know he’s looking for probably a um you know a significant pay raise you know 10 to 12 million in that that um Direction so yeah it’s just a matter of kind of who the odd man out as and it’s not it’s not um you know Dante or Hardy or you know some of the guys you know on the low end it’s basically like are you willing to move Tim to basically afford um you know Derek are you willing to move Maxi I’m just throwing that contracts that are you know that 1112 million range or um Dwight Powell for example I mean a little bit less but that’s going to be the big thing I think you would love for um and this Bobby Portis did this back in Milwaukee about three or four years ago you would love for um for D to come in and say you know we’re going to take a twoe deal at at 5.2 million player option for next year and with that a cruise bird early bird rights for next year and you can you can give him a 12 to1 13 million um contract and you won’t have to you know trade a player there but that you know that comes with the player sacrificing you know six or seven million dollars this offseason Bobby what uh Derek Lively was just a huge I guess surprise for all of us from the in The Scouting Community where were you guys on that and then now you look at it and go okay I told you bums I had this guy right and you you know you guys were trying to talk me out of this kid but where where were you now on him where where where should Scouts look him listen one of the one of the things um that I do um is I work with a lot of these draft proos I’ve been doing this since Jason Tatum came in draft um you know helping them when they get to meet with teams when they get to when they’re doing their interviews so I’ll for month of May I’ll sit with all these prospects about at 60 or 70 a year and really coached them as far as the interview process here and I got I flew out to LA last year and and um and and sat with uh with you know Derek certainly the story with his mom you know was inspirational and you know certainly her passing is you know certainly a sad moment for him but I just love the kid I mean like I loved his personality I think you know he get he got I think there was so much untapped potential based on what we saw Duke um you know his his his freshman year there um and they got a steal and when you can hit on draft picks right you like go you got that guy for you’ll get them for the next eight years right you get them on your rookie contract you’ll get them on extension probably here and that’s that’s the beauty of trying to build out a roster you especially where where Luca is um you know salary wise where Kyrie is salary-wise where you know things might get a little bit expensive but you know if you can find those type of guys man those are um you know similar what OKC’s been able to do you know when you get you know jayen Williams um I think got 13 um and then case in Wallace I know that was actually the trade with Lively there um you know that that helps you in the long run Bobby the last thing I wanted to ask you about was you you brought up Luca there and I think we’ve had a conversation about Luca and wanting to play for his national team and the Olympic qualifiers being being a GM in your background How would how would you juggle that if you were the Mavericks and maybe wanting him to take a break or focus on his body and and other things like that instead of just keeping and maintaining playing yeah yeah I mean in a perfect world you’d love for him to take the summer off right like basically maybe maybe train with his um you know train with the team or be a part of it but not from the competition standpoint because you know certainly from from an Olympic standpoint you’re basically going you know you’re going June July end of June July now Olympic starts in August and then basically like you know then Camp starts at the end of September but It’s Tricky I mean because you’re really at you know you don’t want to interfere with that um you’re not going to tell the player he can’t um you know certainly the league the league really lets it you know um lets the players kind of decide and at the end of the day he’s got to trust his body I mean you could the only thing you could do is provide as much support as you can whether from from a training standpoint whether having your own guys over there with him um in that aspect but a lot of it is just kind of rest you know I mean you love that he’s playing right so you know he’s you know he’ll be in good shape when he comes back in in late September and everything like that but it’s it’s somewhat what the Team USA Team USA guys like you know Tatum and holiday um you know two guys that are going to play like you’re going to have to really take it easy on these guys when when they do come back where you’re kind of trying to integrate them in October Bobby it’s always a real treat man thanks so much for the time appreciate it thanks guys [Music]

-Dallas need Marcus smart or Malcolm brogdon & grant or patrick Williams /seddiq bey Don’t resign DJJ he is not a starter on championship team.
Trade THJ to get under the tax to make a real offer to DJJ. Even if we trade him at some point we cannot lose him for nothing. We need one more real upgrade to the starting lineup to take the next step. We have decent depth at forward with him but if he walks we can only roll out Washington, Green and Kleber. With Kleber's injury history that will be problematic in season
Trade for Sasha Vezenkov or Omer Yurtseven. Trade Kleber, Green, THJ, Hardy, Powell, Prosper, and Exum. Then sign Vit Krejci, Svi Myhailiuk & Goga Bitadze, or Ryan Arcidiacono, Caleb Martin, Simone Fonteccio & Luke Kornet or Malcolm Brogdon & Ochai Agbaji.
