Cody Williams Selected No. 10 Overall by Utah Jazz | 2024 NBA Draft Grades | CBS Sports

back here on CBS Sports HQ presented by Jeep Cody Williams is the first first round pick from Colorado since Derek white in 2017th going 10th overall to Utah Williams a 6’8 190lb forward who missed 13 games last season due to injuries athletic defensive minded with playmaking upside he’s the brother of Jaylen Williams who plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder he was the 12th pick in the 2022 NBA draft and now he’s got a little bit of bragging rights sayy bro I went 10th I went 10th overall in 2024 and Matt norlander has some bragging rights because he spent some time with Cody Williams wrote an excellent article on CBS sports.com what did you learn about Cody Williams and his ability now as he heads to the NBA 10th overall of the Utah Jazz I am interested in Mr finklestein’s opinion on this as well because there is a very real possibility that with Cody Williams The Best Is Yet To Come and it could be huge a major factor with Cody Williams in his one and only season at Colorado the highest recruit ever in the history of that program is he had a ristra then he had a broken orbital bone and then he had a sprained ankle that actually wound up being a Grade Three sprain he gutted it out he returned to the team in the postseason for the Pack 12 tournament in the NCAA tournament but after his season was over and Colorado lost in the second round of the tournament uh a highly regarded doctor take took a look at his initial MRIs and said I would have never played him on this ankle uh the fact of the matter is he absolutely wanted to be on that floor and even despite that it hurt his stock a little he still goes in the top 10 having spent time with Cody his family his Camp they were insistent insistent the entire time that he would not fall below 10 that well indeed comes out to uh to Bear here Utah was definitely willing ready able and excited to take him if he faed to 10 here he is an interesting Wing I will say this I watch his training regimen he’s a good shooter I think he will maintain himself as a good shooter the numbers will improve he is skinny he needs to put on at least 15 pounds of muscle give him a little bit of time and I do believe also having talked to his brother Jaylen who was an iMed hit was the 12th pick but has been a top five player from the 2022 draft I do think because his brother has done well and because of how they were raced and how mature he is as a 19-year-old I do expect Cody Williams to have a pretty high floor here I’m not promising you he’ll be a top three or four player in this draft but it would surprise me if he does not bear out to have a successful NBA career I I view this as either an a because he is in my opinion one of the highest upside prospects in this draft or a c because I think there are some outcomes uh that that would be a little disappointing here here’s the reality everything Matt said is true but Cody Williams even in high school was more of an idea than a reality when it came to the consistency of his productivity now he’s a big Wing he’s Ultra fluid I mean this guy floats around the court he’s so he’s so smooth he shot over 40% from the three-point line and everybody myself included since he was in high school has cited the fact that his brother was a late bloomer who made huge strides and said you know what Cody’s father long at the same stage but at some point point he’s got to turn potential into production we’re not at that point yet they’re going to give him time to develop his body the average of the a in the C is a b I’m going to go there I will say this this is the ultimate Danny a pi pick because this is a big swing and if he connects this is a high upside Prospect an A or a c or maybe see me after class and we’ll have a discussion about where he ends up the discussion around Cody Williams what have you seen from this young man at his one season in Colorado did deal with multiple injuries as Matt laid out there yeah definitely needs to pick up some weight agree with Matt and you know he shot 42% from three but he only attempted one and a half threes a game so he needs to get up more attempts uh this Utah team you know they’re they’re kind of in transition you look at guys like Jordan Clarkson my old player that played for me Colin seon lri markon on this team you know where does he fit is is he going to spend some time in the g-league as a c player think said or is he going to be that a type of a player and you know cracks the road ation but you know he’s a kid that needs to get stronger uh he can run the floor obviously you know his brother’s going to be highly motivating for him because he doesn’t want to be the weakness in the family in terms of his NBA career but I like I like this pick for Utah Gary you mocked Cody Williams going to Utah so I know you got to like that fit yeah listen these guys have said it all he’s a high upside Prospect who looks the right way but undeniably he is has been a great Prospect more than he’s been a great player so far in his developmental phase but I totally get it again he looks the right way the wings spin’s where it at like you mentioned he did make a good percentage of Threes at Colorado but it was low volume stuff and the other thing is you know even though he was a festar prospect in the class of 2023 like basketball fans haven’t seen him a lot because he went to Colorado he was injured you know not a lot of Colorado games on CBS or ESPN or big Monday and that kind of stuff so even though he did play college basketball um he wasn’t as visible as say a young person who went to Kentucky or Kansas or North Carolina or Duke so he’s a little bit of a mystery but like he checks a lot of boxes if you are really just trying to identify at this point in the draft who’s got the highest upside and in this new NBA of multiple positions and versatility he has that capability Cody Williams 10th overall to the Utah Jazz for
