Jake & Ben: Full Show | The Brooklyn Nets are blowing it up | NBA Draft is tonight | What You Got…

and now it’s 10:00 a.m. let’s just get down to it and it’s time for your sports fix strap yourselves in folks from two guys who have covered the teams you’re passionate about for years we are professionals this is Jake Scott and Ben Anderson on 975 the KSL Sports [Music] Zone God Almighty I feel my temperature rising it’s Soul Jacob 975 the KL Sports Zone are you playing this Christian because of our our big NHL Vegas giveaway yeah is this your motivation Elvis sure uh today’s also the anniversary of like his last show that he did oh really well done Christian oh Elvis is always good with me is he the most synonymous performer with Las Vegas yes CU that’s really saying something because there are a lot of performers that are kind of the face of Vegas you know what I mean so that I mean he’s the king of rock I guess yeah uh but Sinatra or uh uh Wayne Newton Wayne Newton Roy and then there’s of course like the shows yeah Sig freed and Roy cir Blue Man Group that type of stuff but now it’s Elvis it’s got the and go 100 yards without passing a look alike yeah and it’s like washed Elvis unfortunately it’s not even like the coolest Elvis but well he was there for a long time he wasn’t quite washed at the beginning but yeah they kind of made him stay there if you believe that movie yeah but I don’t know the I think the residency in Vegas is like the best best gig in music there’s a reason they’re all trying to do the Vegas part I know you’re not a Vegas guy can’t imagine living in Vegas uh it’s I bet I mean I I’ve talked to people who live in Vegas I think it’s a little more normal than you think the heat is not normal never normal so I get the ju’s crazy I get I remember the spear story was she lived in Southern California and helicoptered in every day another advantage of being in Vegas close La really close if you want to do that flying every night you some people have 40-minute commutes every day anyway so did you see they cancelled JLo’s uh residency oh did they Ben made her cancel it no I think her tour and uh album have really underperformed and so they re-evaluated spicy anywh who there Ben it’s Draft Day whoa here on the station it’s here you and I uh both can be part of our coverage tonight which I’m uh very much looking forward to always fun we’re going to be out on the uh out on the Plaza outside the uh Delta Center so stop by say hi bring my sunscreen uh bring your sunscreen bring your Shades we should probably bring some little personal fans if we have them well they’re going to have the 10 out right so we’ll at least have a little shade I know I don’t know how any this works well I would hope so right in the sun we’re just standing face first right in the sun no we’ll be covered up and uh one of our favorite people who we got to hang out with a minute the other day coach Steve Cleveland yeah excited that uh that coach is going to be back and uh and doing it again that’s uh really cool he’s he absolutely hit it out of the park last year and uh yeah it’s I’m very much looking forward to it yeah and not just with you know coverage and presence and knowledge but he really got into it and even like his predictions of like the guy he circled remember really early in the night that he’s like this is gonna be a much better player was haime huis and he was exactly right yeah exactly right nailed it so I’m excited to get some of his insight as a coach who has seen lottery picks up close coached lottery picks up close and seen them develop into superstars in the NBA obviously the person I’m talking about is Paul George so what does that look like who is that this year I’m curious to see what he to say are you uh intrigued with this year’s offseason uh I got more intrigued last night after the male Bridges trade uh I thought that sparked a lot of that’s the type of movement if you’re a jazz fan you’ve been waiting for uh not necessarily to pay that price for male Bridges and we can dive a little bit deeper into that aspect of it but one of the things I’ve kind of consistently hit on which is weird is that you know the Jazz were until last night the last team in the NBA to really blow up their roster to really really decimate the pieces they had to start a full rebu rebuild to bulldo everything uh no teams had made trades teams kind no one had really fully fully dropped to the Bottom by trading all their pieces and I think we saw that Brooklyn’s about to start doing that and maybe a couple of teams now start to do it uh with next year’s draft on the horizon and that creates movement and the Jazz need movement to be able to acquire pieces to start their real add building blocks and big game hunting as Danny AES said uh I have thoughts on that but before we entirely leave Vegas behind the reason we brought up that big giveway we got to blow this up B is uh we want to send you to Las Vegas for the NHL draft which is awesome because it’s at the sphere it’s at the sphere I mean at the sphere what a way to dive into NHL Hockey being in Salt Lake City uh you can enter to win tickets in the 2024 NHL draft at the sphere on the and 29th plus Ben $11,000 cash you could have some fun in Vegas with a grand buddy really cool uh all you have to do is visit KSL sports.com contest winner is going to be announced live at 5:30 p.m. today yeah what’s awesome about this is this is not an event this is not a promotion that’s been going on for a month and there’s in there yeah like there’s a lot of people who just aren’t going to know this is a thing so if you’re listening right now your odds of of winning are so much higher than a lot of major radio promotions aren’t bad yeah KSL sports.com contest KSL sports.com contests so yes Ben sorry about that we’re announcing it tonight no oh and on top of it and look maybe we just need to push this better because I had some conversations yesterday on Twitter about hockey coverage and who’s covering what we’re covering the draft we have an NHL draft show with h and Scotty Friday we’ve got two people from KSL Sports going down to Las Vegas to cover it live uh our hockey beat Rider Kyle Ireland and Jay Stevens who is a former Utah Grizzlies player who’s been on the show several times who also does a podcast for KSL Sports about the Utah Hockey Club and has great inside sources over there uh we’re sending both of them down there we’re blowing it out we’re blowing it out like if you are looking for hockey coverage in the state of Utah and you feel underwhelmed you need to go to KSL sports.com we have articles coming out every single day including news that came out this morning plus this big giveaway all right Ben now you hit on like 15 different things so let me let me pick one reset please will you please lay out the Mel Bridges trade for us because that was the the big news yesterday and it is very relevant in the in the draft tonight so let’s reset that a little bit because we didn’t get quite those details and I’ll back up even just a touch further earlier in the day and maybe even it was two days ago Jake fiser from Yahoo Sports reported that the jazzz the Rockets and the Knicks had been in conversations with Brooklyn about the availability of male Bridges now everyone’s kind of always knocked on the door for male Bridges even right after he got traded Memphis reportedly offered four first round picks to Brooklyn right after he got traded from Phoenix in the Kevin Durant trade so he’s kind of always been in the ether as somebody who could be available and a couple of days ago it picked up again that like people were sniffing around again and then last night the story comes out that he was getting traded to the New York Knicks remember he’s a Villanova player just like Josh Hart and Jaylen Brenson and who’s the other Nick that’s Dante dvan chenzo right right so it’s like four Villanova guys are now with the Knicks anyways he gets traded to New York for four unprotected first round picks which is basically the same that the Jazz got for Donovan Mitchell and Rudy goar a fifth first round pick courtesy of the Milwaukee Bucks that’s lightly protect Ed but it’s next year it’s probably not going to be a very good pick if you think Giannis is still going to be there uh and then Buon bogdanovich former Jasmine which is just salary yeah it is an enormous price to pay for a guy who last season averaged 19 points five rebounds and four assists so we can get into well first of all I love Bridges so do I I think everyone really loves Bridges I think he’s he’s great now I think he’s going to be ground out and disappear in New York because he’s never going to have the ball and he’s going to play a th000 minutes in the season so I feel bad for him actually and they’re still no better than Boston so they’re going nowhere and this is what the idea is right you resign ogan anobi you have male Bridges you have the wings now to at least defend the wings in Boston that’s the concept in theory in theory yeah even though you still have to hide Brunson yes oh and in fact this is what you’re doing you’re getting more guys to help you hide Brunson love Bridges so I think I’m not going to say it’s a non-impact I don’t think it makes them better than the Celtics and I’m curious to see how he’s used and if I were him or his agent I wouldn’t be optimistic um but with that being said Ben uh it’s interesting that that Brooklyn is choosing to do the right thing because they were going nowhere and going nowhere fast but um I’m not going to be here tomorrow okay on my birthday right happy birthday thank you more importantly I’m not going to be here Friday MH which is the day after the big debate because inflation is going to be a topic okay I’m guessing so let me get here’s my here’s my comparison for you okay I think we’re seeing draft pick inflation yes I think Rudy’s trade actually I mean you could make an argument that it really was the the gas that went on this fire because Rudy being an all NBA player and all that sort of thing is is true but Rudy is far from Anthony Edwards yeah just to pick his teammate so all of a sudden now it’s like what that’s the market that’s what it’s going for and now we see a crazy deal yesterday for a player who’s probably in Rudy’s category I suppose but that it was a better deal than the the Jazz got for Rudy and the deal the Jazz got for Rudy was a better deal than the Jazz got for Donovan because the Jaz the deal the Jazz got for Rudy was supposed to be like a loophole Minnesota could only trade for one player to sure do what they wanted to do so they just gave the the Jazz everything so that was supposed to be like an outlier deal and what it’s done is like and I I don’t know if this is good or bad for the Jazz because the draft picks are not like money where they’re necessarily going to be worthless you’re still getting a player with that but the problem is is I think the Jazz want to move a bunch of their draft picks and now the market is not what it was before the Jazz made their own trades if that makes any sort of sense but if male Bridges is worth that what is Anthony Edwards worth yes what is Giannis worth like to get one of those guys now is it 10 draft picks like right what is the what is the cost and that’s that’s the crazy part about this is I you know it’s funny because the you know the gold standard the picking a player is still valuable and it’s the same value it ever was but all of a sudden now if you want to trade for a veteran or an impact player or whatever it’s it’s going to cost you all of the picks so what is the way to go go you know now does it alter the way you I mean whatever plan we’re talking about the rebuild plan or whatnot I mean does it make you more likely Ben it would me it would make me more likely to go in on moving up in the draft because maybe I think that now drafting my player really has to be the guy and I’ve got all these picks I can move wherever I want in the draft maybe the most value is not flipping picks for stars but drafting stars because you can flip them for picks or that’s the only way to get players that’s the only way to get players but you can still move up in drafts mhm which I wouldn’t rule out tonight for the Jazz okay so a lot again a lot to unpack there two things I would say first of all the Knick’s way overpaid like this is crazy now if it’s the market it’s the market and I promise you the Jazz were on the phone for M Bridges as well like one of the reasons why the Knicks paid this much is twofold one the Knicks traded inate for a player so there was going to be a premium for the Nets to give up a player like Mel Bridges it was already it was always going to be a higher price for the Knicks than it was going to be anywhere else second of all of course the Jazz were in this conversation like these are exactly the types of conversations Danny a has positioned the Jazz to be in yeah because everybody loves Bridges coming back to that everybody loves that guy’s game it’s great now the nice thing is Danny a is smart enough and Justin zanic is smart enough to know when to hang up the phone to not just say we will give you everything for a player who’s good Mel Bridges has never made an All-Star team he’s made one all defensive team in his career he’s a little bit older than you think cuz he’s 28 years old which is still fine I mean he’s still got a lot of good basketball ahead of him but if the Jazz were to have traded five first round picks for him including the Knicks trading four of their own first round picks is really insane I mean that’s a ton a ton of draft value that’s really expensive and one of the reasons why the Nets traded male Bridges finally is they realized regardless of their own draft Capital that they have which remember they got a bunch from Phoenix in the Kevin trade in addition to M Bridges and cam Johnson was that they’re doing exactly what you’re talking about how do we get a star player if we’ve got all these draft picks and we can’t acquire another star like the market is not opening up to make stars available for trade with all this draft Capital the only way to get a star is through the draft right so they B basically pivoted to that which is something the Jazz have been unwilling to do to this point the Jazz were not willing to Pivot towards fully tanking to get a top three or four pick to get a star where next year again is the type of position where teams are starting to do that but I don’t think it’s necessary to tank to get I agree with you that’s not I agree with have to do that but that is the decision I think Brooklyn made last night I think Brooklyn made the decision that they can’t find a star to pair with M Bridges so they’re going to get their star via the draft and they’re going to be 20 win awful next year uh you know 62 losses or whatever and try and get their star that way that was one decision that the Jazz have not yet made well the problem there is is as you point out es is 28 years old so if you do decide to go through the draft to get your star that star is not going to be a star for at least three years four years and now you’re talking about 31 32 Y and you have passed on trading a valuable asset and that that may be the exact position the Jazz are in with Lowry Markin so that then does get very interesting for the Jazz which is I don’t maybe people don’t agree with me like I think Lowry marinin is a better player than male Bridges he doesn’t play both sides of the ball like M does but his offense is significantly better okay I could I could buy into that ARG they’re at the very least comparable sure and I think Lowry’s probably a better player what it does is set an insane market for Lowry Markin where if someone wants Lowry and everybody wants Lowry the Thunder want Lowry the Houston Rockets now want Lowry you name it teams want Lowry marketing I’m sure the Lakers do the Lakers Lakers can’t be in this conversation they don’t have seven picks I don’t know what to tell you uh you set this bar of well it’s five first round picks now and four of them have to be unprotected like the the value to get low Markin and out of Utah is so high now it’s crazy uh and that doesn’t mean it’s not possible but someone may come with an offer and say well we’ll give you the same M Bridges offer for Lowry and I still don’t know if the Jazz would say yes to that because as we’re seeing it’s so hard to get players the teams are backing out of the good players they already have just to get draft picks to tank and get up in the draft and whatever you resign Lowry for he’s going to be a bargain if he’s willing to resign meaning like like when the big TV money hits you’re going to look at Lowry Sal salary a lot different yes so I again I’ve always said you keep Lowry you give him an extension you keep him around as long as you can he’s the type of player that in the long run you say you know it’d be really nice to have a Lowry Markin on this team the same way you know Boston never traded uh Jaylen Brown and it was really nice to have him because he just won the finals MVP and they could have traded him for a long time and even I said maybe it’s time for them to shift because they haven’t been able to get over the hump well they get over the hump and they have that guy and all of a sudden they look really smart so that’s how I would approach Lowry Mark I do want to talk about one other thing well okay let’s still talk about the Nets Fallout I would not rule out the Jazz still making another deal with the Nets and the name I would Circle there is Cam Johnson who’s the other guy they got in the Phoenix Suns trade who is also 28 years old so he’s a little bit older but he’s a great shooter he’s a pretty good defensive player and clearly the Jazz have been on the phone with the Nets over the last couple of days because I’m sure they were involved in these male Bridges conversations and we know the Nets want to add more draft picks the Jazz have a lot cam Johnson is a name that I think would make a lot of sense for the Jazz just in aide one of the really interesting things we’re starting to see and this is the second trade that happened last night was the Nets traded a lot of their future sons Capital to Houston right to a get their own picks back but to give Houston Suns picks because Houston wants to go after the Suns players so one of the things we’re starting to learn in this where this is relevant to the jazzes teams are trying to trade back picks they own to the teams they got those picks from originally so the example would be the Jazz trading picks back to Cleveland that they own from Cleveland because teams have their ability to control their own tanking value the Jazz don’t control how good Cleveland is the Jazz don’t control how good Minnesota is going to be so those picks kind of have an uneven value you don’t know exactly what it’s so that Cleveland or Minnesota may want him back yeah but if yes to that point so like let’s say hypothetically Minnesota has to trade Jaden McDaniels or pie in the sky has to trade Anthony Edwards the Jazz actually have a bit of a leg up if they’re gon to if Minnesota’s going to start a full rebuild because they’re going to want their own picks back because they can control how bad they’re going to be they can’t control how bad Cleveland is going to be or how bad Utah is going to be in a trade like that type of thing so they may value getting their own picks back which is what Houston is trying to do with uh with Phoenix now and what Brooklyn just did with Houston they wanted their own picks back so they can tank and be bad next year that’s an interesting element with the Jazz with both Cleveland and Minnesota going forward where you talk about the Jaden McDaniels or you talk about the Evan moies of the world who could become available in trade and the Jazz actually have a leg up in trades for those types of players because they can send you your picks back and controlling the value of your own picks is more valuable or at least a more proven thing than not knowing what value you’re getting from another team and what they are going to be able to do that’s that is an evolution in the NBA that I have not seen a lot historically that I think is new when you’re acquiring four and five picks from teams I hear what you’re saying however I mean who’s got the number three pick tonight Houston that was acquired from Brooklyn who was what last year bad now the Boston Jason Tatum pick was from Brooklyn and they were bad absolutely got it and now if I’m arguing against myself the Jazz had the New York Knicks pick this this vaunted pick in their pocket for like eight years that they got from Tom googli or something like that and eventually turned into Gordon Hayward but that was Gordon Hayward at pick number nine there were one fantasies that that was going to be pick two one right or whatever and New York was able to manipulate it and turned it into number nine so and kept the jazz on the string for a long time before they were actually able to make the pick so there’s both both sides of the coin but I don’t know if you know like Minnesota what if they’re you know forced into a rebuild anyway and you don’t trade them their picks back and they’re terrible forever and you get Jason Tatum I mean yeah absolutely you you well the nice thing about this is you do kind of as you like to say you hold them by the short hairs you gota like you can either give us your players or you just don’t get your picks back yeah and then and you’re going to suck and and we’re going to love it it’s actually one of the interesting things about why I don’t understand why Houston made the trade they did last night like you know Brooklyn’s trying to tank now why did you give them next year’s pick back I actually kind of hated what Houston did last night counterproductive counterproductive unless they’re like 100% positive that these picks have more value to another team Allah the Phoenix Suns to give up Kevin Durant or the Utah Jazz to give up Lowry Markin and like something like that it better be an absolute or the other team I should throw out there is the Miami Heat to get Jimmy Butler like you better know why you got those specific picks versus holding on to the Nets pick which by the way the Nets win the lottery every single year that they don’t own their pick so why you would give that up now actually doesn’t make sense unless you have another plan because they’re going to move for a Dusty Kevin Durant and it’s not going to work and they’re going to spend waste something like that because like Tilman fertita is this is him being impatient here’s the difference between Houston’s ownership and Oklahoma City’s ownership Oklahoma City is sitting on a mountain of assets with a developing team and they’re being very patient with the moves that they make you can blast them for the Hayward thing because it didn’t work but they barely spend anything on it I mean that compared to what they’ve got and the cap space they’ve got I mean they could make a huge move but my guess is they’re not going to trade for a Dusty Kevin Durant they’re going to figure out you say hey we’re pretty good right now we’re gonna we’re going to wait until the right thing comes to put us over the top whereas Houston’s like oh we’re on the climb we might be kind of good spend it all it SP it all oh it’s their Mike Conley trade yeah but they’re doing it super early in the process super early super early and for and and if mik only were like four years older and your guy Wendy who’s on our TV right now Brian windhorse had even floated the idea that like they might give up Alper and shenon who’s a guy you and I both really like he’s amazing they’d be crazy trading Alper and shenon and you know some of one other young piece plus a bunch of picks for Kevin Durant which would be so shortsighted but which would be the type of mistake that dumb teams do make that would be crazy do you realize that shenon is Nicol yic but like 2 in is shorter is just exactly where the league is going exactly where the league is going and a weapon that you would have that nobody else would so at 3 tonight they draft Donovan King in the center from Yukon to get the center to replace Al shenon and then they trade shenon for a star Madness but that is but I hope they do it because if shenon were available the Jazz should be the only team bid that would be a type of player if I were the Jazz I would really I’m not sure there would be un touchable players on my roster especially if you’re getting shanon and picks like future assets that is the type of player I would say let’s figure out how to get this deal done it’s super young yeah just a little bit older than Shay would have been when okl Oklahoma City you’re talking about you’re talking about maybe getting a perennial Allstar for at the beginning of his career and you have a guy who sets an unselfish culture because he’s a not selfish player man shanon’s great that would you would be a coup I’m with you yeah take advantage of dumb teams find the pigeon and then fits into like the Jazz timeline fully of just like yeah Taylor Hendrick Keon George Bryce sensah all these draft picks like that’s where you hit the reset at the exact right time and everything makes sense and you tank and you get Cooper flag next year and it’s like you’re off and rolling that you’re right that’s probably like the pie in the sky option for the Jazz I I don’t know if it’s happening but I I would get that scenario I certainly agree with you keep an eye on pick number three I don’t know if that’s going to be Houston’s yeah I don’t know if they’re keeping it either yep all right stay tuned top three stories coming up next Jacob Ben 975 the KSL Sports Zone every decision comes with enormous uncertainty counting you down to draft day with the 10th pick this is your draft update on 975 the KSL Sports [Applause] [Music] Z Jazz draft update at 30 jazz draft coverage uh starting at 6:00 tonight at the plaza at Delta Center here’s Justin zanic talking about uh can be easy to focus on players negatives or watch a player and you have an opinion and it’s all about what he cannot do and I can sit there and pick apart 450 NBA players too if you want me to but they are literally the best players in the world playing on championship teams and like I think it’s really important for coaches and front office you need to figure out what they can do not only what what you think they can do in the ceiling but like what can they do and then how do you mitigate or help and develop the by J Brooks Jewelers two locations to serve you one on Winchester Street across from Fashion Place Mall the other Traverse Mountain in Lehigh all right Christian where are we starting today number one the NBA draft begins tonight uh Utah Jazz have the number 10 overall pick aams Razer says they will pick 10th but I wouldn’t rule out the Jazz being aggressive trying to move up if there’s a guy they think they like just a lot of Buzz about Cody Williams name in general in the draft and how high he could potentially go uh specifically it seems like maybe he won’t get past seven at uh Portland so if you loved him you might be able to move up to six with Charlotte to get him something to keep an eye on and if that’s the guy and I like Cody Williams too yeah um and if that’s the guy then go get him I totally agree not you know it shouldn’t be too hard to to get up in this draft I would guess being a flat draft I would assume assume that a lot of uh and who knows if the experts are are right but I would assume that means there’s a lot of players pretty close together on everybody’s draft board so so they’re going to be picking up the phone because they think they can get the same value at 10 that they could at uh at six so figure out who that guy is and go get him I mean if you got to get up to five to get bronny then that’s what you got to do if you got to move up to five to get bronnie James do it uh so right now we are starting to kind of get a picture of what the draft at least is expected to look like again what does that mean I don’t actually know but if it were to go chalk it would be Zachary ret one the French kid uh alexar the other French kid who actually played in Australia last year two to the Wizards uh number three would be Reed Shepard the guard out of Kentucky to Houston Stephen Castle number four the guard out of Yukon to uh San Antonio and then five is where this really starts to open up a little bit whether Detroit would take Donovan kingan which we can talk a bit a little bit more about in a moment uh with they trade out a lot of people think they will just take Modis buellis who was projected to be the number one pick really early in this draft process went to the G league night and had a pretty bad year and then the wheels really come off at six where Charlotte starts and like all the wings will start flying off the board Cody Williams Dalton connect Ron Holland Devin Carter the guard like that’s when it really starts to open up but those first four picks that I mentioned re aay SAR Shephard Castle are kind of expected to be the top four guys uh well what’s is gavon has kingan at three and then kingan could absolutely go at three now uh especially with whatever Houston’s trying to do Houston seems like they’re really trying to be movers and shakers uh and look I totally get it they took off last year which leave it to the Houston Rockets to bet everything on a one- Monon stretch of basketball it would be like the Jazz rebuilding the roster around whatever happened between December 10th and you know February 1st where they had that 15 and two stretch it’ be and specifically you’re talking about Jaylen green it would be the Knicks betting it all on Jeremy Lynn yeah right time to for a month it’s time to build around this guy it definitely reeks of that with Houston so yes what they do at three might be telling of the NBA landscape not the draft landscape like that’s thinking macro macro I’m thinking a little bit more micro of just what happens tonight uh but Memphis apparently trying to move up to to get Donovan kingan uh maybe would trade Marcus Smart to Houston which makes some sense because eme Oka had coached Marcus smartt in Boston and knows what type of player he is but was was uh but Houston might be thinking bigger now with all these draft picks so uh I think it’s G to be an unpredictable night good yeah more fun that’s great it does it does make it way more fun when we don’t have any movement like last year seemed to be lacking some movement certainly on the Jazz standpoint but really is the league overall yeah it’s funny how that es and flows isn’t it big time uh there was only one major you know again cam Whitmore slipping was kind of the only major storyline that felt way out of nowhere and I won’t be surprised that there’s guys on a lot of boards projected at like 25 that go at 12 but I just think that’s really possible oh wait where is Isaiah Thomas the Rasputin Now Phoenix yeah what pick do they have do they own any draft picks ever again no they own 23rd they’re 23 yeah 22 23 right in that range get ready for Phoenix not only to pick a guy who’s like not on anybody’s draft board but like probably doesn’t even play basketball bronny James oh Bron he did work out for Phoenix out for Phoenix um they’re also they’ve also been tied to the Jazz as trading back uh Trading 23 for 29 and 32 and then really putting the pressure on the Lakers to try and move up and get bronny Zeke Zeke working his magic we drafted a roller hockey player we think he’s going to be terrific uh the names I would keep an eye out for the Jazz Cody Williams from Colorado Ron Holland former number one recruit uh who went to the G league night and had a very up and down year and then Nicola topic who would have been a top five pick but Torres ACL and as a point guard would fit well those are the three names topic Holland Williams I would keep an eye on for the Jets you know drafting injured European point guards hasn’t been a real effective strategy for the Jazz in the past my beloved R Lopez yes sure Tony Parker was on the board you know their history of of drafting injured big men isn’t much better you you knocking my beloved Curtis borchard no no he didn’t have a foot when they drafted him they like ah I doesn’t need a foot I think if he has one he’s goingon to be pretty good he’s gonna be awesome have you seen his touch they did the same thing with Costa Kus right he fell the jazs were like got to take GRE I’m not saying that guy wouldn’t be the guy but I definitely look at his Medicals very closely all right what’s next my name is Lio o’ban you guys can call me spicy tuna number two spicy tuna is back in Salt Lake City darn Rod is a fan favorite from day one uh absolutely soon as he said spicy tuna everybody was like oh love that guy and he’s like a I think he’s like a third line defenseman like he’s he’s not at top of the rotation uh but became beloved right away he’s an enforcer uh he’s just kind of got that attitude he’s just like the most hockey guy he’s the most hockey guy on this team so cool they’ve made a bunch of these signings a lot of them are these kind of like two-way deals that basically you can sign in hockey it’s like kind of the rookie contracts essentially but this is more of a veteran who comes back and provides a little bit of depth but really is a personality and that is one of the things I’m excited about with this this Hockey Club and getting to learn a little bit more about them is like who are the personalities who are the guys who are the fun people who uh who’s kind of kind of interesting to watch here here is Bill Armstrong’s uh statement Ben quote we are very pleased to sign Liam to a three-year contract he adds energy grit and physical presence to the lineup every night and will greatly compliment the excitement we expect from Utah hockey fans especially in our inaugural season we look forward to having Liam on our roster for the next several seasons yeah uh I’m excited to watch him I’m very excited to watch him play great he’s not even a defenseman excuse me he’s a forward am I reading that right uh Ben I think some of those Players missed an opportunity to solidify their spot on the roster during the in introductory uh thing got to get out there and be charismatic remember we were talking to our guy OC the other day doing his goofy handshakes yeah right it worked yeah it worked really well when you have a chance to make an identity for yourself capitalize he is a forward excuse me spicy spicy tuna spicy got a name we know who he is it’s going to be a battle for a lot of people to learn names set yourself apart really easily and early on when you’re consuming Sushi do you like your tuna spicy yeah right I’ll take it yeah do you like the Tempur rolls or what do you like or is that too much oh dude I’m I’m across the board I like I like most everything I’m not wild about eel okay not really my thing but other than that yeah I’m I’m fine temper Ro deep fry oh hey yeah speak my language all right what’s next number three Dennis Lindsay lands in Detroit your boy hey shout out the DL Dennis City Dennis wow it I mean I hope they are paying him a zillion dollars because that’s what it would take to land me in Detroit with that dysfunctional franchise but you know what Dennis is good at is building he is good at it he he did a good job building the next rendition of the Jazz taking over from Kevin oconor it didn’t end up in a championship but you cannot say that he did a bad job he was a senior adviser last year for the Dallas Mavericks and they made a bunch of really good moves now what I don’t know how much Dennis was in charge or Nico Harrison was in charge but he was there and they had a lot of success like there is a track record of good moves and teams winning games where Dennis Lindsay has gone now who is the boss is it Dennis or is it TR and Lon I think it’s TR and Lon I think so too but again I saw this like senior vice president versus Executive Vice President like I don’t is this an Elton brand thing where Elton Brand’s still technically with the 76ers but he’s just taking a nap in his office Mor is doing all the work yeah what does senior mean I don’t know what the SE level Executives titles means like I don’t know if senior is actually above regular or if senior just means like you’re on the senior golf tour where it’s like yeah it’s not the PGA anymore you’re on the senior tour you’re not as good I’m sure Dennis was thrilled to make $2 and a half million dollars again though like I’m sure sure that felt good after not making all that much money for the last couple years compared to what he was now his kids are all grown he he’s finally an empty nester his youngest I think just graduated high school I’m just thinking of yeah because he stuck around in uh in Utah for a little while uh for that to happen um I’m just thinking which by the way a plus dad moved Denis yeah right good for you like your daughter’s going into her senior season where I’m sure like sure she was popular let her enjoy that moment of her life and not relocate to Detroit and and be here I mean he was here be here I mean I absolutely I’m I’m glad you pointed that out but I am thinking about Becky Lindsay who is a lovely person his wife who I’m sure was excited to go back to Texas because she’s uh Texas born and bred and then to be like oh no we’re going to Detroit I just wonder what her reaction was and I hear Detroit’s cool too but very different from Texas quite a bit I just got rid of all my Parkers Dennis what am I going to do now yeah I had a nice North Face thing I really liked where I got to find another I gotta gotta find another Parker yeah right I was happy to get rid of everything I got I donated my ski pants what am I gonna do is there skiing in Detroit probably not no but you’re not from Canada you got to go shovel that driveway you’re probably throwing on your uh your snow P Dennis is busy so the wife wife’s got to get out get a nice snowblower it helps don’t go electric especially snow in in Detroit where it’s wet and heavy yeah get gas all right with you you go see Kevin James 801 575 Zone Ben my favorite story in the news right now not the uh Pittsburgh lady who stole the the yacht that was pretty amazing I think it was a guy oh it was a guy why did I think it was a woman I don’t know uh but Texas A&M baseball coach Jim schlagle I’m obviously pronouncing that correctly SCH Nel uh lost in the College World Series and after the game was asked about like printed reports that he was possibly considering taking the Texas baseball job and uh he was asked about it and and this insued coach with respect to the difficult outcome tonight but with the rumor circulating today about a specific job opening what do you have to say about your future in Agy land yeah I mean I think it’s pretty selfish of you to ask me that question to be honest with you I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again and that hasn’t changed in my mind and that’s unfair to talk about something like that that be like you asking Montgomery if he’s going to sign in the draft but I understand you got to ask the question but I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job and I’ve poured every ounce of my soul in this job and I’ve given this job every single ounce I can possibly give it it’s right that coach thank you very much and then he took that job 18 hours later not even a full day which by the way he had taken the job already right like yeah it had already happened they didn’t come with a wildly different offer like the you you had the job in mind but see here’s been okay so the coaching profession attracts different personality types and there’s some psychos in there and if I were Texas if I were their ad I’d be like we’re getting a real psycho on our hands and and here’s where uh here’s I’ll tell you why I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anybody leave a job better than Matt Wells left Utah State to go to Texas A&M uhhuh because all he did Ben was be honest and he didn’t say oh I’m taking another job or I’m looking to take another job says in today’s coaching environment my phone is always on I I’m going to take phone calls it’s how things work I love Utah State I’m not necessarily looking to leave but I’m not going to lie to anybody and say that I’m stay what what did this boo say um I left my family to be coach at Texas A&M I took the job at Texas A&M to NE never take another job again to say it’s very and that hasn’t changed in my mind well that’s he’s he’s this is a how dare you ask me that I’ve heard it a zillion times in sports and if you think of it how dare you and then go on with the statement I mean that’s what he’s doing yeah I have the biggest I am the biggest person in this room how dare you ask me an awkward question and make me have to answer something that I don’t want to yes and that’s where the psycho comes in because all you have to do is be transparent and you don’t have to insult where you are and you don’t have to an accept a job when you don’t want to accept it at at some point in time you just have to say man this coaching World Is Wild I get phone calls all the time I pick them up I love Texas A&M I made a sacrifice to be here but the coaching world’s pretty wild so I hope I stay but you never know I mean that that’s even kind of lying but that’s way way better than I’m gonna undress this reporter yeah and call him selfish which apparently he has s he apologized in his introductory press conference today yeah which whatever you’re right you you buried this guy and this guy had to deal with this bad press and this bad answer for at least 24 hours and the power discrepancy there which is really what’s difficult is we learn this reporter’s name now because of the power discrepancy of this coach burying him over something that the coach was lying about And the reporter was not only doing his job but doing a damn good job doing it because he knew what was coming and you got buried for it so yeah it’s silly it’s embarrassing and yeah how do you answer the question I understand why you asked that question I’m focused on my players tonight we just had a tough loss and we’re going to reflect on the season I’ll give you two examples uh Ben from the same coach one wrong one right um I’ll start with the right but the wrong is more entertaining okay um I have told you the story that I was the last person to ask Jim boan a question while he was coach at University of Utah okay I was down at what would have been Mountain West Conference the Mountain West Conference tournament at the Thomas and Ma right and they I can’t even remember who they lost to like New Mexico or something and uh it was obvious boand was going to get fired I was there at the press conference and nobody asked him if he thought he was going to get fired or nobody asked him about that inevitability and so at the end I was like okay I’ve got one more I said you think this is going to be your last game as the head coach at Utah and he gave me that answer that you just said right there basically he’s like I I hope not you never know it’s not my decision really love this team of my guys like he didn’t like it that I asked it didn’t like the question gave me a perfectly appropriate answer Gordon jumps in to save a young reporter on the other hand and Gordon’s face triggers Jim boand and all of a sudden we get uh don’t come here once every two years and ask me that question right so here’s a guy who handled it really well on on one hand and really poorly on the other and I’m sure that if you’re a psychopath egomaniac coach and some Pencil Neck reporter is asking you about something you don’t want to hear about you’re going to have your feathers ruffled well grow up and answer the question like an adult yeah or find something else to do I don’t know no comment but don’t undress the guy right that’s ridiculous yeah it was silly it’s embarrassing but apparently he has reputation for this stuff which is not excusable well if he treats people like that in that setting how do you think he treats his staff correct or anybody else or his assistant or his players or family know that matter yeah all right what are we doing here sorry Christian uh this segment of course magical segment brought to you by Peach doors and windows amazing home Transformations begin with peach doors and windows where five 11:30 it’s Jac and Ben 9775 the KSL Sports Zone who’s got it better than us no your home for the best sports coverage in Utah you’re listening to Jake Scott and Ben Anderson a 975d KSL Sports [Music] Z Jen Ben 975 the KSL Sports Zone this is huge news everyone oh the KSL Sports own wants to send you to Las Vegas for the NHL draft enter to win tickets in the upcoming draft uh uh to win tickets to the upcoming draft of the sphere in Las Vegas June 28th and 29th plus $1,000 cash all you have to do is visit KSL sports.com contest that’s KSL sports.com contest we’re going to announce the winner this afternoon at 530 so your chances to win are great KSL sports.com contest Ben I’m dying to go to the sphere I don’t care if it is owned by James Dolan I’m um it it’s one of the more unique things that we have close to us I I want to experience it the draft would be awesome that’d be an awesome way to experience the sphere are you kidding and this is historic uh one of the cool things I I thought about our our you know Jazz 50 and 50 the 50 best players in jazz history for the 50th Anniversary that we did last summer uh was just kind of learning some of the draft history and like I honestly didn’t know that Pete Mar was the first draft pick in jazz history like I just didn’t know that that was I knew part of Pete’s story I just didn’t know that they had basically made the Superstar Allin trade to go and get Pete marovic like well they had draft they traded all these draft picks to to get them yeah you know what I mean uh so I think that was very cool I didn’t realize that was a thing that they had done so you get to see the first NHL Utah Hockey Club Hockey Club player drafted that’s cool that’s a real part of History we’re going have Kyle Ireland Jay Stevens down there as well from KSL Sports for your full coverage and a NHL draft show Ben what would be ideal for the jazz tonight move up draft somebody one guy make all three I mean does it matter yeah I almost want to broaden that out and just kind of speak a little bit more hypothetically for teams in the Jazz situation what should the strategy be like you’re at a point where and this is so common with teams with the 10 11th 12th pick like late Lottery you’re you’re not awful you’re not great you could legitimately find a player who’s like a two or threeyear college player who could step in and play right away and help you next year and be in the rotation but isn’t the highest upside person or you could swing for the fences on whoever Falls or of course there’s always the mystery player which is the Giannis type and hope that they hit now way more often those guys don’t hit like of course we’ll always remember Giannis you don’t know who Usman Jang is or who drafted him or what happened to him like and he got drafted two years ago he’s still in the NBA you’ve never seen him play basketball so just kind of a from a strategic standpoint do you have an ethos or I guess a code that you would operate by in that situation just understanding like of course every draft is a little different but in a lot of ways they’re also very similar go I just don’t know I I still come back to believe in your scouting and figure out what you got to do to get I mean there’s a player I mean xanx said it there’s a player out there what do you got to do to go get it now it’s a little more tricky right xanx said he predicted what last year’s draft right on the money right on the money you know and so why didn’t you go get four five or six last year you know what I mean sometimes the price is just too high or whatever it because they got what was it 11 and 12 on their board last year yeah with Hendrickson 10 and 11 or 10 and 11 10 nine and 10 with with Hendrick and and Keon George that’s a sneaky Savvy draft right but if there’s one guy you go get it or get back or whatever I’m I’m expecting movement from the Jazz regardless and maybe it’s a big deal maybe Houston uses that number three pick as a catalyst to really Kickstart a big deal and the Jazz get in on that in some way shape or form I don’t know I think the I absolutely believe that Houston would be interested in Lowry marketing if I was Oklahoma City a huge trade if I was Oklahoma City I’d be absolutely interested in Lowry Market I would probably more willing to make a move with Houston if I’m talking huge trade because OKC’s not trading they’re good players no and I want shanon I just want shenon that would be the one person I would that’s out there in the NBA that has the chance to be the exactly what you’re talking about the next Shay gilis Alexander not that he plays that way but the O perennial all NBA player that develops with a team and like the league comes into him right the leag develops into him which even when Shay was traded I’m not sure we were all in on like the tall point guard that was doing the things that Shay did and we got there really quickly like that you have to be oversized at your position uh that has become a must and Shay is the perfect example of that type of player um and shenon could do that same type of thing so I’m I’m with you on that sense one of the interesting things that I thought Justin xanic said yesterday was that you know there’s a tier of about eight players well that means there’s two players the Jazz don’t think they’re going to have access to which is I will tell you right now that’s Zachary Reet and that’s uh alexar if I had to guess I would feel I would feel extraordinarily confident that those are the two players he’s talking about or maybe it’s three guys and you would throw Reed Shepard into that group and then this next group of players who were like kind of all similar would be Steph Castle Dalton connect Donovan kingan Cody Williams Devin Carter Ron Holland Nicola toic I’m sure I’m missing somebody off the top of my head Cody Williams if I didn’t say Cody Williams uh that’s like the eight guys I bet you he’s talking about so how much do you care about Fit versus well that’s in our tier and we’re not going to give up too many draft assets to move up and get the guy who fits because one of the things Danny a did say last year was when you have guys who are in a similar tier for you whether that’s the second tier of the draft or the third tier of the draft wherever the Jazz feel like this tier is that they’re in fit does start to matter you will take fit into consideration if you feel like all these guys have the same you know Star level at their best if they if pan out perfectly then when you start thinking about fit and the truth is like is there a bad fit for the Jazz yes 61 okay so Rob Dillingham who’s probably a name I should have put in this tier is a guy who is the 61 non-defensive point guard who needs the ball and wants to score yeah I’m not taking that other than that oh no no I’m not taking huge stiff either so okay so Ed off so Ed’s off okay so like both ends of the spectrum okay not too big not too little not that’s out for me this porridge is just right no and it looks where the Jazz pick there should be a plethora of big long wings that they can take and there going to be projects and people just need to deal with that but the the potential is through the roof full stop yeah you know as you said I mean Jaylen Brown like yeah keep that guy develop that guy sit on that guy 68 Long and skilled is the NBA yeah when LeBron was running the show it was 68 and huge and powerful and that’s not the case anymore 68 Long and skilled yeah I should put modest buellis also in this conversation of like these guys in this tier that the Jazz are talking about but unless it’s bronie don’t take six1 yeah then you got to take Brony well the genetics by the way did you see that report from yaho sports that the best indicator of draft draft success is did your dad play like if your dad played in the NBA that’s your best case now again this goes back to my good heart’s law that I’ve brought up so many times which is when the when the measurement becomes the target it ceases to be a good measurement so like you can’t draft Dr J’s kid if his kid is 4 foot eight and has a left leg that is shorter than his right leg just because his dad played him like well that that’s been a good measurement historically like well that can’t be the goal that can’t be the end game I get why it has history of success but they still have to match check all these other boxes which bronnie probably doesn’t check all these other boxes which is NBA skill set NBA size NBA uh uh history as far as what they’ve done in their buildup to being in the NBA draft he lacks all those other things my 10th grade biology teacher is so embarrassed by that whole take like I saying your take I’m saying the the take of the best indicator of success is did your did your dad play I’m I’m and trying to draw some sort of conclusion from that like some sort of argument for bronie James for example based on that indicator it’s it’s really it’s really embarrassing now Ben how many well let me put it this way okay if your dad’s an NBA player Genetically speaking there’s a really good chance that you inherit genetics that you inherit genetics that are conducive to the NBA in fact we can boil down to the percentage of that chance very easily yeah because last I checked humans have how many parents generally two and the genetic material that go into making a child come from how many people two people it’s a random combination of two people two people now I go back to Hance H’s uncles Merlin and uh Orin giant men NFL defense of lineman absolutely giant H’s dad normal siiz guy H yeah right a giant human right obviously got that Olsen got that side of the gentics got that side of it H’s brother normalized guy now Ben can you imagine if uh growing up hans’s brother was playing football and they just threw him at defensive tackle right and threw the helmet on him the p and they said you olon get out there and dominate like your uncle or your brother hence’s brother would look around and be like yeah dude I’m I’m like 510 175 yeah right I don’t think I’m GNA do that that’s not how genetics work correct it’s not how it works so you can’t go well Bron’s dad is LeBron James so next stop NBA superstar because maybe he didn’t get those genetic traits right from his father right it ignores a big part of what is actually in the equation that has to be detailed there you could argue 50% right or other recessive genes or other things that go into our genetic makeup all the other different things and you know what Brony 61 it’s not his fault his dad’s 68 well you know rocks the size of a house because both his parents are tall and athletic but you know what Rock a a couple of Rock’s sisters are on the shorter side or not well you where if Rock wasn’t 67 and 300 lb and he was 511 and 186 lb he wouldn’t have any offers I yeah thank you any off I hate to just use hans’s family as our example but it’s actually a really good one my dad’s an engineer Ben imagine if somebody just said oh you’re off to engineering school I would have failed so miserably because I didn’t get that math thing from my dad yeah you know what I mean your dad’s an artist yeah you’re a writer I mean it’s like a sports writer imagine if they just handed you a a lump of Clay and they’re like all right Ben get to work make some genius happen right now if you happen to inherit that art side from your dad well then great but that’s not how it works that you’re just guaranteed to get that thing maybe you do Steve Brown his son sounds just like him I e and his son just like him there’s there’s connections there cuz genetics are a thing but to try and say this 61 guy that is under skilled and all these things is going to be great because of you know genetics that’s not how it works I’m totally with you which is why again I would not draft bronny James solely on the fact that his dad is LeBron James and that that’s what you’re betting on now but don’t write something that says like the best indicator is who is Dad is sure right if if Danny age was like oh we’re going on pure genetics this year right and look Walker Kessler’s Uncle played in the NBA Rudy Rudy’s dad played in the NBA yeah right but what was the best thing they got from their parents right it was that they’re seven feet tall not that they learn something basketball-wise or there’s something genetically that like they saw their dad play when they were three now I’m not going to Discount that I think there is something about knowing people who are in certain businesses that make them feel accessible I think that’s absolutely believable I think recognizing what the culture is and what the culture isn’t is a good thing but the most valuable thing you can get from your dad being an NBA player is being 6 foot eight is there let me ask you this and I don’t know the answer is there a genetic reason that Steph Curry is as good a shooter as he is or did his dad just know what it takes to become a great shooter and show to his son how to do it I think there’s a part of it I think there’s a part of that more is that nature or nurture that’s a huge question well one that scientists still grapple with to this this very day right the real the question here one of the guys that’s interesting is is Jaylen Brunson whose dad was a so so NBA player but all these videos have emerged of his dad like running him through these insane rigorous practices as a young kid to be like I don’t care that you’re tired you have to run then you have to make 15 jump shots like it was crazy it’s like well that might be part of it his dad knows how to train him up a little bit better and that’s where another name comes into play here if we’re talking about this conversation that is very much in the conversation I think for the Jazz at number 10 is this kid Devin Carter out of Providence whose dad is the grizzli old veteran in NBA history Anthony Carter who was just like couldn’t shoot at all but just like stuck around he was just grizzled he was just kind of a a tough guy guard back up his whole life but his son’s pretty good had a really good year at Providence last year he’s a little bit older he’s only shot the ball well one time but like he’s going to get it he’s just like going to make it in the NBA and a lot of it does have to do with like his dad just found a way to make it and he watched that his whole life and I think he’s going to inherit a lot of those same like kind of quote unquote dog mentality so you know when are you willing to bet on that versus the other guy who maybe is a little bit more of a question or the topic who’s bigger who’s coming over from Europe and is more talented but might not quite fit in with the the DNA of the NBA and I’m not saying anyone’s ever said that about to it’s just guys relocate across the world or across the country and sometimes they don’t bond well with the NBA see I’d buy into that a little bit more that like okay his dad had this uh salty mentality yes you know he probably told his son you know what you need to succeed in this sport a salty mentality like I’d be I I buy into that other than can you imagine if uh Secretariat had a baby with another breeding horse or whatever and for whatever genetic reason it came out just a run yeah and every every body’s like well that’s Secretariat’s offspring that’s no donkey get that get that run into the Kentucky Derby never um but yeah to Steph is Seth and Steph Curry magical Shooters because there’s something genetic about shooting or is it they know how to do it yeah now I would lean toward the ladder before the former when it comes to something like shooting agreed but when it comes to something like athleticism and size then certainly there can be some more of a genetic component there and unfortunately for Bron he didn’t get it from his own man correct he did not win the genetic Lottery no from his father now it looks like his brother might have yeah his brother is bigger but he did not and so I don’t know I’d be I’d be careful with that sort of thing but I if you’re looking for like a a player that has the salt that’s going to grind and improved and that sort of thing and you looked at his old man and that’s what his old man was well that’s probably a pretty good sign yes both athletically and from a mentality standpoint right and there’s a weird thing another element about this which is what we’re talking about which is I like the idea I think of drafting a kid whose Dad wasn’t very good as opposed to the kid whose dad was so good like uh was a superstar yeah like Del Curry was pretty good not a he was six man of the year he was a role player he was a very much a role player I like the idea of like I don’t think Steph entered the NBA just saying like I got to fill my Dad’s shoes no like no one’s ever said I got to fill D Curry shoes D left some fill but not that much not that much versus can I fill Lebron james’ Shoes well nobody will ever so or like jiren Jackson yeah his old man was good not great yeah exactly right that’s fine don’t have that pressure probably got some genetic gifts yeah and you could fill it out that’s an interesting conversation I suppose but one that madens me if you’re trying to justify taking anyone well well his dad played well you you should probably look into a little more than that I guess what’s his mom look like yeah I’m with you or what does he look like what does he actually look like 61 yeah so he doesn’t look anything like his dad he didn’t get that not from his dad stay tuned which guy wnes day coming up next Jacob men 975 the KSL Sports Zone every decision comes with enormous uncertainty counting you down to draf day with the 10th pick this is your draft update a 975 the KSL Sports Zone Jazz draft update at 30 NBA draft going down tonight coverage on the station begins at 6 o’ here’s Justin Xanax saying he’s not concerned about having too many young players there’s a difference between 23 year olds and 18 year olds but if that’s the case it’s you want to make sure that that you have enough veterans on the team that can help them grow and do it they can’t raise themselves or raise each other that’s all they have to talk to and know so I think that becomes very important and I think we have some good veterans on our team right now but that will obviously factor into some of the things we either do in free agency or trades or things like that make sure you listen for draft coverage throughout the day here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone and make sure to follow all of Ben great work online KSL sports.com [Music] that whether it’s the Jazz Utes cougars or Aggies these guys have got you com and to eat fellas you’re locked on to Jake Scott and Ben Anderson 1 2 3 on 975d KSL Sports Zone [Music] time for what you got Wednesday Jake and Ben 975 the KSL Sports Zone Jake Scott Ben Anderson what you got Wednesday we do it every week here on the station uh where Ben and I go to head-to-head in a five selection draft and uh we then put it out for a vote online and uh you decide who wins last week Ben we split athletes you were happy to see win a championship I won 57 % to 43 okay and best movie franchises you won 73% to 27 one thing I’ve realized not to reveal strategy if you draft Star Wars you’re going to win Star Wars is the thing Star Wars really connects with our everybody loves Star Wars yeah all right apparently that’s good to know all right what are our topics uh today so we’re going to start with sports first in honor of the draft tonight we’re going to get all the bad juju out go with worst Jazz draft picks of all time I like this idea get all the bad picks out of the way to remind you what not to do tonight now I have a question does it count if somebody else took the pick for the Jazz I will allow it okay like they ended up playing for the Jazz played their rookie year for the Jazz yeah right I agree so that’s fine with me okay Ben has the first pick oh I do number one overall okay as always obvious answer no no you don’t think so Christian I’m going to go with the guy who I think even though this didn’t end up being a great draft you really would have capitalized well off of hitting here and you didn’t and it just call kind of turned into a joke was Anis caner I just you moved up in the draft it was somebody else’s pick and I guess in that sense you’re let off the hook a little bit but you needed a star and he was not that he just never quite figured it out in Utah it wasn’t terrible but just never quite figured it out and that was a weird flat draft Ben but there were other players out there and the Jazz went with uh Andis no I think that’s why I asked the question because that pick came from New Jersey so okay the the Nets technically picked would that been your first pick I would have considered it um but I’m going to go with Dante exom okay had the fifth pick in a supposedly stack draft and he got your arm Twisted into drafting that guy who came out sucking a thumb and never yeah not all fault of his own injuries you know the whole thing but never but most of the guys around him before and after were much better players much better you got the worst player in that group other than Jabari Park and they like I say they got kind of pressured into taking him they knew nothing about him they hadn’t worked him out they hadn’t seen him none of that but somebody had him listed sloted to go high and so you got to pick that guy automatically and uh I told you I was told by a jazz executive that they thought they might be getting a Jimmer foret type player who was so good offensively and nothing defensively and how much different could you be but what Don X actually turned into like That’s how little they knew about him yep that’s crazy to invest that pick and a guy who they ended up with that little understanding of and they had taken Trey Burke the year before and not that you should base your pick on on what you’ve got but I mean yeah it’s a good pick uh I’m gonna go with the first year the Jazz started teasing the lottery and they started getting into this conversation uh and I guess I’ll go with Chris humph uh Chris humph is out of Minnesota was a oneandone right maybe he was two years he was a one and done uh had the body you kind of thought D this dude’s going to replace Carl Malone uh he did not he was awful he’s Jerry Sloan made fun of him behind the scenes apparently and called him bow Flex uh because he was all body he just nothing else to his game at all he was just stronger than everybody in college but uh bow Flex Chris humph former or former Mr Kardashian former Mr Kardashian um may have been the least intelligent player I’ve interviewed ever interviewed one of the dumbest people of all time y so I can’t shout out made a lot of money off that Kardashian I can’t believe that I’m getting this value of pick cuz this is a contender for number one as far as I’m concerned Luther Wright yeah I have Luther Wright on my list my only question is I wonder if he’s too far in the past I don’t know but it’s one of the biggest blown picks in jazz history and it’s because of what’s his name the coach um who got choked what was that guy’s PJ carismo they called him up they said what’s the deal with this guy PJ said he’s great and he turned out to have significant mental issu uh issues and he only let’s see played 92 minutes not games minutes in the NBA in the league and I believe that they drafted him to they thought that they were a center away from getting over the top and F Spencer just Tor his Achilles Tor his Achilles they draft Luther and it just turns out to be a whole nothing they eventually had to draft tag yeah and he got him close but not over the to well until really me urr but also you know Rudy goar the Jazz just the Run of Cur centers in Utah he was a part of that conversation he was the part of the conversation um all right I’ll go with Curtis borchard speaking of curse centers bad feet drafting a big drafting a big guy with bad feet I just it’s just one of the stupidest decisions anyone’s everever made and I get it he had been projected to be a lottery pick before and he fell the reason he fell was because he would gotten red flagged on every draft board because his feet were so bad and the Jazz said but it might work for us might work for us no it did not ah Ben you know what I’ll take this uh I’ll take this player here you were wrong kind of right about Chris humre but he wasn’t even the biggest bust in that draft correct uh I’m going to go with Kirk Snider who they took 16th the Jazz had been searching for a replacement for Jeff hornek forever he was supposed to be it he only ended up playing 20111 games total yep in the NBA also had mental health issues ended up in prison ended up in prison uh but only played one year for the Jazz I believe I think he he fought somebody in the parking lot I’m trying to remember after one game he fought he got his butt kicked by Jerry stack house was that what it was ironically who also beat up beat up Jeff horis yeah oh that’s a great story I believe it was stack interestingly enough they had three first round picks that year and they put picked all busts cuz Pavo pod cine was pick 21 but they took that they took him for Dallas and who was pav pod Kine baby who was his agent I have no idea Justin zanic was it real oh yeah that’s right you said that the other day his first client well he got him drafted in the first round a guy who only played six NBA games Jerry Stackhouse beating up Jeff hornek and Kirk Snider is very funny is pretty hilarious actually so funny and I love Jeff Hornes don’t get me wrong um and by the way the picks after Kirk Snider and after Chris humph because they went four and 16 were Josh Smith and El Jefferson guys who had like 14 and 16 16 yeah so 15 and 17 were Al Jefferson and Josh Smith who played the exact same positions were very similar players and ended up playing like a thousand games just way better Y and by the way they didn’t draft Josh Smith because there were concerns about character issues and then Kirk snd broke into his neighbor’s house and went to jail really have character issues anyways uh all right I’ll just go this might win me the draft it’s not fair but it might win me the draft look this was such a terrible reach with udoka asabuki it was such a bad draft pick like especially because Jaden McDaniels and Desmond Bane both came off right after him but like nobody was talking about udoka asabuki in the first round not a soul you could have gotten him at 50 and you reached on him at 28 or 27 or whatever it was it was a horrendous pick okay so give me do uh all right now this player might not move the needle all that much cuz the Jazz moved off him so soon but it was a bad pick Trey Lyles absolutely and you have the next pick behind him Deon Booker Deon Booker and where did they both go to school Kentucky so when you were watching One inevitably you were seeing the other and you got to pick between the two I understood Deon Booker said he didn’t want to come to Utah and he didn’t want to work out here so draft him and make him come that’s one of the weird things about the NBA is you get to tell play they have to come yep for four years and they will get paid millions of dollars and get what guess what they will buy in uh not a lot of guys never show up Fran Vasquez uh the exception all right my last pick here I like your tr’s pick um man even though I don’t I I will go with raw Lopez just because he’s going to be forever marred that a Hall of Famer was picked right behind he was a bust he was a bust yep he was that’s fair I’ll go with Ral Lopez even though I think there’s two other names that are in this conversation as well all right I’m going to take Mo almond okay that was one of the names I had out there everybody thought that he was going to be the next Jeff war is that cuz he was a shooter out of rice was the leading scorer in college basketball Morris alond Morris Alman number first round pick 25 lighting up the G League also or I guess at that time it would have been the D-League yeah went to the Utah Flash and everybody’s like this guy’s going to be amazing and then uh no he was not the hard part about the draft one of the hard things about the draft is guys scaling down their games can you do what you did in college at a much smaller level and still be effective and he couldn’t he couldn’t not have the ball in his hands and so he was never good uh another name we didn’t draft here uh that we talked about Trey Burke Trey Burke was a huge bust he was a bust you Trad it up top 10 pick in a draft like this year’s uh it just so happened you drafted Rudy gobear that same year right and so it was you made B stinks B it was bad he was a bad player it was bad it was too small and didn’t play defense play the difference I almost took Trey too but Mo wman only played like 38 games yeah 38 games didn’t play a whole lot no and was kind of exactly what you thought the Jazz needed all right and wait he had a guaranteed contract and only played 38 games just throwing that out hard to that’s hard to do you have to really stink all right recap Ben you had the first pick you went Andis caner Chris humph Curtis Bart udoka azabou and Raul Lopez uh Jake you went Dante exom Luther Wright Kirk Snider Trey lyes and Morris alond great all right what is our not Sports topic today non sports uh in honor of Donald southerland’s passing we are going to do best Southerland movies counting him and his son I believe right kefir and kefir kefir kefir I don’t know did the did Donald and Donald’s wife do anything yeah I don’t know what what did the rest of the Sutherlands do right uh but are we doing just movies or shows or both we can do both okay did uh did Donald do a lot of TV I don’t know I don’t think he did okay um is there a I have the number one pick here is there a an obvious one uh I don’t think there is in fact I don’t know if the there’s an obvious one between Donald or kefir like I don’t know if there’s an obvious if you put their careers together who you take well I have my obvious and I’m going to take it but it’s I’m Mash is one of my alltime favorite movies he’s the original Hawkeye pierus he’s brilliant I have no idea how the TV show cast that clown Allen Alda I mean the TV show rules it’s so good and Allen Alda is classic in it but you’re right I mean Kefir southernland in that role is not ke Donald Donald excuse me Donald is Iconic totally different than the TV show so probably won’t give me any votes but Mash all right I will take my number one overall pick and it’s a key for movie and it’s a Few Good Men he plays one of the lieutenants who executed the code red and is on trial uh and he’s kind of actually a little bit more the not the bad one of the lieutenants they were just following orders which is what the whole movie is about but he kind of was more he more understood that what they were doing was wrong and he followed the orders anyways so give me Kei for Southerland and A Few Good Men that’s a good movie all right Ben and I’m going to take Donald okay in the Hunger Games okay now the reason I’m doing this again probably won’t give me any votes but I’ve read the hung Hunger Games and that might be the most perfectly cast oh okay person of I mean he was Emperor snow what’s his name yeah snow snow president President Snow not Emperor and like if you read the book I mean he looks exactly how you’d picture and mannerisms and all that sort of thing it’s like so incredibly cast he nailed it he just killed it the hunger I don’t love those movies but the casts are unbelievable so good yeah unbelievable um all right I’m going to go I’m going to cater to our older demographic and I’m going to go with Donald Southerland in Animal House he plays the professor has such a bit part and it’s so stupid I mean I love that movie too but got cheated out like a bunch of money where he had negotiated that he gets a percentage of the earnings because he was a bigger actor than to do that silly movie to do a National Lampoons movie like he’d already been pretty established and he shows up and something happened with his negotiation he end up losing a bunch of cash on it but uh Animal House Donald southernland all right I’ll take this movie not that it’s a good movie but I did love it as a kid Young Guns okay kefir and funny Young Guns yeah it’s funny that’s great um a classic man I feel like I because I know I’m going to get a good Donald Southerland late so I’m going to go with kefir again this is just a movie everybody loves and it’s Stand By Me he plays the bad kid that’s a great movie and then they see the body spoiler alert and everyone’s just kind of bummed but yeah Stand By Me good kefir kefir had some hits that was his best ERA all right then I’m going with Old Donald again I’m GNA get trounced in this one but I love this movie I could not take it the dirty dirty dozen great he was good in it talk about a great cast Lee Marvin Jim Brown Charles Bronson together at last the the The Dirty Dozen great um well I’ll take one of your other favorites and I again I draft this movie so often for only seeing it once uh JFK JFK Donald he’s good in it as Mr X doesn’t have a huge part no he doesn’t in fact all the movies you picked they he doesn’t have a huge part in correct but I mean nobody has a huge part in the movie with the exception of like two people yeah yeah like there’s just so many good people in that in that movie if you haven’t seen it watch it what uh number am I on this is your last pick okay last pick another one that a movie that I just love and speaking of an amazing cast Ben would never pick this but whatever I’m picking with my heart Space Cowboys okay with Tommy Lee Jones and James Garner and Clint Eastwood old men going into space surprisingly entertaining movie I like the idea of sending old men into space uh I will take a favor to mine won’t get me any votes I don’t think even though it’s a very iconic meme Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Donald Southerland pointing and yelling at the very end and it’s one of the great twists in movie history all the Invasion of the Body Snatchers movies are good uh his might be the best never seen it it’s It’s haunting and good and I great allegory for uh what we were afraid of in our in the Cold War was really good all right Jake you had the first pick you went Mash The Hunger Games Young Guns The Dirty Dozen and then Space Cowboys then you went A Few Good Men Animal House standby me JFK and Invasion of the Body Snatchers uh time to kill we left off which is has both of them I think they both are in that yeah they are both in that okay wait did Ben not take one role or one movie where either one of them are the leading role no leads seriously what was Ben’s again Few Good Men A Few Good Men Animal House standby me JFK and invasion of body the is he the lead there okay all right the screen time of Ben’s selections for the Sutherlands is like eight minutes the same length as uh Luther right’s career that’s funny all right well we’ll see how it goes uh we’ll get that up online for you to vote let what you got Wednesday more next Jak and Ben 975 the KSL Sports be a big deal there’s gonna be a lot of people that show up I think people are buying in on sports right now I just think Sports has a ton of momentum right here in the state of Utah and certainly at the Delta Center with the hockey team and I just think it’s it’s a place to be and then people will come back Friday for the uh for the big events which I think should be cool as well for the draft man I wish they still did the War Room out in front of everybody that’ be pretty cool Danny wouldn’t on Center Court oh no are you kidding I mean it’s really the fans follow I heard David David James was talking about this the other day but like there are more examples than this but Kevin oconor standing up draft night and talking about the Gordon Hayward draft only get just showered with booze yeah like it’s a bad look GM and stuff are gonna be like why am I doing this it’s a bad look now I get booed the player gets booed it’s a bad it’s all bad so why would I do this yeah and I I don’t know if they’ve done it since honestly Dennis used to come out and speak after everything was said and done I think zanic does something similar right uh and xanic yeah will’ll do a media availability tonight so part of our coverage tonight we’re hoping to get whoever the Jazz draft on at 10 and 29 uh get them on the phone and talk to them on right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone uh and then we
