Stephon Castle Selected No. 4 Overall by San Antonio Spurs | 2024 NBA Draft Grades | CBS Sports

Stefon Castle is a lottery pick we saw that develop throughout his only season at Yukon running the Big E freshman of the Year award helping Yukon win his second straight nty 66 210 lbs big playmaking guard with a two-way game Castle and Donovan kingan can get the second Yukon do to both go in the top 10 in the same draft joining a meca okor Ben Gordon 2004 we sit and wait for kingan not sure he’s going to fall out of the top 10 we’ll wait to see where he ends up but Stefan Castle is now headed to the San Antonio Spurs and I love Stefon Castle he he’s a he’s a polarizing Prospect some people love him some people have questions I have questions about the fit and I’d be interested in coach’s perspective on this because Castle’s 6’6 we talk about him like he’s a potential point guard let’s let’s be clear about this he played the three at Yukon this year he was the third ball handler on that on that team their best perimeter Defender and an inconsistent shooter um really strong he benefited by playing on the second side of the floor so when Tristan Newton or Cam Newton uh cam Spencer got things going defense rotated that’s when he got in the lane it’s a whole lot different you want to be the primary ball handler in the NBA against an NBA level defense he’s not a great shooter and that’s what I don’t love about the fit around wemi I think San Antonio must think he can be their point guard of the future he’s an ultra versatile guy who can play and defend multiple positions but if he’s a non- shooting Wing next to wemi that’s where I struggle with the fit or maybe Rob Dillingham is there at eight Gary he certainly could be and like we talked about before the draft got underway what San Antonio does at four I believe will impact what they do at eight so they’re going to need to add shooting probably with their next first round pick provided that they take it I I could argue this one different ways first I’ll tell you the stuff I like um I I like the way he was comfortable fitting in at Yukon you know he’s a McDonald’s All-American like projected lottery pick who was fine not being the guy I didn’t need to take all the shots score all the points get all of the attention um when you go join a franchise led by Victor wanyama you’re never going to be the guy you had to be one of the other guys and he seems very comfortable with that incredible perimeter Defender so now you got him to pair with a guy who might someday if he stays healthy break the record for Defensive Player of the Year Awards that’s all great stuff the shooting concerns me and I’m glad you pointed out just because Stefon Castle goes to the combine and says I think I’m a point guard doesn’t mean that he is just saying I want to play point guard doesn’t mean that you can I’m not ruling it out but he’s not there yet um I’m not even saying that this is a bad pick or the wrong pick but um you know you everything you hear about wimy is AD shooting all around him and with this pick you you clearly didn’t do that Pap is going to tell him what he’s playing listen I’m you given I’m just going to say B minus I’m going to say nothing else cuz we’re going I want to hear what the Spurs point guard thinks about the Spurs point guard based on what I’ve been told uh projecting him forward they actually think he can be another Deonte Murray that’s how they feel about this kid okay uh because remember when Deonte came out of Washington uh and they drafted him they had to work on this shot this kid shooting mechanics are very poor but can he improve the Spurs historically has had a really good player development program so they really like his size they’re drafting him because they believe that he can be a point guard that’s why they’re drafting uh this kid and I I I’ll say this when you look at his athleticism on both ends of the floor uh is just something that you can’t teach I would say his comparison somewhat you look at what Oklahoma City did obviously they had Shay gild’s Alexander but Josh giddy wasn’t a guy that was a knockdown consistent shooter they moved him around a lot even in the dunker spot so I I think that’s how the Spurs going to utilize um Castle in this situation what’s your message to him you’re going to call and talk to him on the phone what he tell him Stefon Castle playing for the San Antonio Spurs look at my jersey up there number six number and when you turn number six around you turn to number nine that’s Tony Parker so we take pride in really representing the Spurs and the culture and you you’re playing for a Hall of Fame coach right even though we know pop is not going to coach for 10 more years what a great opportunity soak in all of that wisdom well I’m sure pop loves the fact he comes from Yukon and Dan Hurley because again Dan Hurley always talks about we recruit the family as well we’re not just recruiting the player and papovich obviously one of the greatest to ever do it coming up the Detroit p Pistons well they’re in the fifth spot because they’re one of the worst teams in the NBA they finish with the worst record in the NBA in back-to-back Seasons what are they doing with the fifth overall pick that’s
