Zach Edey Selected No. 9 Overall By Memphis Grizzlies I 2024 NBA Draft Grades I CBS Sports

look what we have here Zack Edy ninth overall to the Memphis Grizzlies two-time National player of the year uh he we we he was mocked to go in the lottery or he was mocked to go the bottom of the first round um we’re going to go to the Memphis resident in-house here Gary Parish Zach Edy to Memphis I know that they have liked him for a while the question in Memphis was never do you like Zack Edy could you envision Zack Edy being you know the center uh on a core featuring John Morant Desmond Bane and jiren Jackson Jr the question was would you really spend the ninth pick on him a top 10 pick and it it seems to me that clearly they wanted to move up and get Donovan kingan or at least there’s a lot of reporting that suggest that was true they couldn’t get that done uh Edie is there they like him and I think the bottom line is this they’re less concerned maybe the lesson is with the Knicks and Nets last night the Knicks paid a big price to get Mel Bridges but if Mel Bridges works out nobody will ever complain about the price they paid I think the Grizzlies are sitting here Sim similar situation now did we have Zack projected as a top 10 pick maybe maybe not they’ll answer that question later but we wanted we liked him this is where we had to take him if we were going to get him we got him now and if it works out nobody will ever care that it might have been a little too high let’s bring back Matt norlander here and Matt you’ve covered Zack Edy two-time National Player of the Year Lost In The Natty to Yukon when you look at his game the big knock is that his Game Wouldn’t translate to the NBA what do you respond with when you hear that I I I think that he’s got a great chance and I go off of what we saw by the way I know who the 10th pick is if you want to get to that before the end of the segment here by the way that’s just been submitted for a source with Zach Edy he winning the two-time national Player of the Year as this huge huge force in college basketball and still going top 10 in the modern NBA I actually think is a very refreshing storyline for college basketball for the league and all I can tell you is in checking in with sources over the past week Edy in his workouts was absolutely emphatically dominant I had two sources tell me it got to a point with two separate workouts that they almost had to stop them Midway through because he was so ridiculously impressive physically on the floor you can’t teach the size and what happened here was there was a lot of smoke with the Grizzlies trying to move up to maybe get clling and ultimately they held firm and they draft the big that outplayed kingan head to-head obviously in the national championship game even if kingan got the W but also the stats across the board the stats at the combine Zack Ed has a tremendous reputation not just for how hard he plays how well he’s developed how much of a teammate he is and we have to reinforce this he is a the combination of a proven legitimately dominant once in a generation college player and he is also very much on the rise he has not played highlevel competitive ball for more than six years at this point he has an incredible chance at continuing to move up and get to be better and better and better so so with Ed the reputation as a dominant college player ultimately won out over the stigma of being a big man and variety of teams viewed Edy as a guy a prospect that with what he did what he accomplished and how big he was you really don’t get a guy like him more than once in a generation Memphis didn’t want to wait any longer congrats to Ed and his family top 10 pick Adam finlin what grade are you given this I go I’ll go I go a b okay um this is another one that that beauty is in the eye of the beholder as you would say um and listen Matt hit the nail right on the head there the key with Edie nobody cares in the NBA what you did in college what people do care about is your rate of improvement and Zach Edy has improved by Leaps and Bounds every single year and he’s done it in a multitude of ways the most obvious this year was his conditioning the work that man did on his body like listen I know he’s massive I got into an elevator with him at the combine I was like oh I’m sorry um he he’s massive he was he was there’s going to be real questions in the defensive end of the floor we talk about that national championship game you know what else happened in that second game Yukon got behind him for two lob dunks when he went in to drop coverage that’s an issue okay I don’t that’s an issue he’s got to figure out how to play ball screen defense in the NBA but he’s massive he’s a worker he’s getting better every single day and there’s a clear trajectory to show that you played with two trees two Hall of Famers can he play I’m not saying at a Hall of Fame level but can he play at the level where he could be not necessarily Elite but a role player on an NBA team Zach Edy first of all I’m glad that we’re rewarding the most decorated college basketball player in the last two years with a top 10 pick showing that you can stay in college for four years uh you don’t have to go and transfer for your covid year and try to break the bank with the nil money this kid stayed this kid stayed in college for four years and I’m so proud of him uh yes he can fit uh I’ve watched him progress and how he’s developed um when you’re talking about a pick and roll with John Morant and Zach Edy and you have jiren Jackson Jr you know spreading the floor cuz he can knock down the three or when Jared Jackson is resting now you can run your offense with Ed and and John Morant um I I really like this pick I give it a B+ I’m not giving him a grade but I like this pick for Memphis and I’m also thinking think uh Gary I’m also thinking about the other teams in the division you know Derek Lively junor who played pretty well in the playoffs obviously you know nobody can really care to Victor but again you look at what’s happening in New Orleans so you got some big centers in that division that you have to break through against if they want to get back I to make this pick real quick he’s the best screener in the draft I should have meant johnar he’s going to be a perfect screen partner he’s going to get him open all day long and I think that’s a big part and that was a big thing that Grizzlies valued in Steph Adams before he was injured there he popped jaw loose a lot and if nothing else Zack e is going to be able to do that yep great point there and I will add that Zack EDI wasn’t able to get nil he’s ineligible because he was an international player from Canada now he’s going to get some money in the NBA because everybody’s getting paid

  1. The first 8 teams will regret they didn't drafted the two-time player of the year monster! Nobody can guard Edey and he destroyed Clingnan in the championship game.

  2. IMO this guys is a generational player. Griz are set for playoff runs for the foreseeable future. The guy is a team player, plays literally all game, has seriousness in his play, and has the size and athletic ability to dominate all the toothpick centers in the NBA. No way Steven Adams moves this guys off his spot.

  3. People that are saying “this makes no sense” are clueless to what Memphis is.

Memphis does not need Edey to score. Sure they need him to get 8 a night, probably all free throws, maybe 10?

    Memphis needs Edey to:

    1. Throw screens
    2. Rebound
    3. Rim protect along side Jackson
    4. Shoot free throws

  4. CONGRATS ZACH EDEY DESERVE IT.LET'S GO ROAR…!!! MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES I TOLD YOU NOT IN MY HOUSE. SAID ZACH EDEY🐻🐻🐻💙💙💙💙🏆🏆🏆.

  5. That’s the thing. If it works out, then it wasn’t too high. I think Edey will be a really solid player. If he turns into a 10-year starting center that’s fantastic.

  6. With a hellava masterful Hakeem the dream footwork blueprints hustled then, of course!

EDEY CAN BECOME A HELLAVA EXTENDED beastly burdensome unapologetically viciously massive destructions monster balling ferociously in the NBA. .
    😉💥 O boy‼️💥😮‍💨💥😳💥🤣💥🥴

  7. People who dont see this as a perfect match didnt watch how grizzlies got the 2 seed twice. We now have a young steve adams to train. Lad works hard too, great fit. Go grizz!!

  8. Steal of the draft, Portland used the 7th pick to draft a basic backup center who cant score other than wide open under the hoop dunks.

  9. Im so glad portland took Clingan, we wood have mess this draft up as clearly Zach is a better player than Clingan

  10. Edey was the focal point of his team and he succeeded. Got 2X national player of the year. He will dominate inside like he did in College! So he can't guard out in the perimeter, it's not like there is a 100% 3pt shooter out there. Grizzlies is gonna be hard to score on inside with JJ and Edey on the floor!
