No Way The Houston Rockets Actually Got Away With This..

all right boys welcome back to another video swagy here we’re currently 30 minutes away from the 2024 NBA draft the Houston Rockets have the third overall selection as of right now I have no clue who the Rockets are about to take I expect it to be Reed Shepard as you guys can see in the thumbnail of this video I think overall he’s a great fit for this team in what they’re trying to build he is a little bit under size at 6’3 but he’s got good hands defensively he gets into the passing Lanes he’s a very pesty on ball Defender not to mention that we’re looking at the offense here the Rocket’s biggest need is three-point shooting they’re getting arguably the best college three-point shooter to ever play the game I mean 52% on 4.4 attempts is just absurd they’re getting a guy who can shoot off the dribble off of screens pull-ups he was over 50% from pull-up jumpers last season this is a big time addition to the Rockets but the biggest thing overall is the fact that they have the luxury of bringing him off of their bench Fred Van vit last season had a very good season definitely proved the critics wrong got that huge contract he’s got two years left on his deal the second is a team option I expect the Rockets to personally bring him back even though he’ll be 32 to that point he’s a huge mentor to amen Thompson and now to be expected Reed Shepard but this is a former 2023 Mr Kentucky basketball Award winner mcdonal gold All-American big time player on both sides of the floor LED the SEC and Steels had two and a half a game you look at Jaylen green though alpr shenon amen Thompson tar een cam Whitmore how does Shepard fit in with these guys is going to be the question because the Rockets are coming off a season where they went 41 and 41 that’s a 19 game improvement from the year before they did not make the plan which is a little bit disappointing but at the same time the goal was to take a massive step forward and they did exactly that and it wasn’t just the win total it wasn’t just the statistics it was the massive culture SHP that we saw think you can make a strong case that the most valuable addition to any team last season in the off season was e udoka he took a Rockets team that was terrible defensively and he turned them into one of the best in the league I remember watching that game I remember what month it was if it was March or whatever but it was the Knicks against the Rockets I don’t think I’ve seen a team attack the Knicks defensively like the Rockets State they’ve got so many guys to throw at you specifically amen Thompson with his length and size I don’t think we’ve seen a player like him in the history of the NBA and the game’s been around for over a 100 Years and we’re talking about a guy who’s what 67 230 that can move like him it’s truly remarkable about to get in him later on but talking about Shephard because that’s probably why you guys clicked on this video when I went and looked at him my biggest overall takeaways were obvious it’s his ability to shoot the basketball he hit over 50 2% of his shots Beyond The Arc last season which makes him the first lottery pick S Glenn rice to shoot over 51% from deep in their final year in college of course Shepard played his freshman season that was it which makes even that much more impressive 52.1% of his dribble jumpers this past season 73 attempts that’s in the 99th points per shot percentile Shepard also has unselfish traits in a high basketball IQ he makes the players around him better and extremely coachable I think head coach Em udoka going to get the best out of him defensively just like he did the rest of his guys but we’re talking about a player who averaged nearly a block a game at 6’3 23 blocks in 33 games you know 0.7 that’s impressive for a 6’3 guard to pair with a 2.5 steals per game which ranked eighth in the entire NCA and like I said first in the SEC Conference good hand eye coordination good IQ can shoot the lights out of the basketball as a pesty aggressive defense ER there’s a lot of upside here for the Rockets he reminds me a lot of Mark Price I know he’s significantly more athletic than price I mean you don’t have to tell me that but I’m looking at Price who was what a four-time all-nba player four-time Allstar one of the best Shooters we’ve seen at the point position and he just found a way to overcome his 6 foot frame to overcome his lack of athleticism right Shepard certainly is a good athlete but he’s not a great athlete right but I don’t think that will matter because he play plays the game with great pace and Poise when listening to him earlier this morning talk about his NBA comparisons he said Chris Paul Deon Booker and Steph Curry and I think that’s perfect for Shephard and what he’s trying to become at the next level the Rockets obviously aren’t going to throw him into the fire he’s going to come off the bench being backed up by Fred Ben ble who’s won a championship eay OKO who’s been to a championship a guy who is one of the better defensive Minds in the league he’s going to be able to learn that he’s going to play with Dylan Brooks the Rockets have good one-on-one Defenders I like the way as well that Shepard attacks Closeouts he’s shown great potential doing that and he’s just going to be a good piece on both sides of the ball this was a guy in college who was expected to score the ball and then get back and defend so perfect fit for this team he’s also great in the pick and roll but for the Rockets what they’re trying to do is take that next step okay you went 500 you had a 19 game increase but now you need to make the playoffs playing at minimum which is why we’ve seen the Rockets Target guys like Donovan Mitchell you know Kevin Durant Brandon Ingram’s a guy that we’ve seen come up comp to the Rockets so overall it’s going to be up to Rafael Stone it doesn’t seem like he’s trying to do too much too quickly I get that the Rockets last night made a massive trade with the Brooklyn Nets where they added in more draft Capital so that way they’d be set up to make a trade for a big time player but Houston they’re in a spot that they feel comfortable in they have the third overall pick after a season where they were right there to the very end in the playing tournament they’ve got a lot of good guys to build around Jaylen green had a very streaky start to the season but in March he averaged 28 6 and4 on 49 4177 shooting splits the Rockets went 13-2 during that stretch Alper shenu is a guy that they’re extremely high in as well I mean it’s not even debatable he’s the best player on this team shenon he went out there and shenon had a breakout season Yeahs 21 points nine rebounds and over a steal a game I remember he had 25 and 14 early on in the season against wemi and he actually even would want up that against wemi 45 and 17 five steals later on in the season that was in March Yeah March 5th but the Rockets they were a 500 team at the beginning of the season going into the new year 2024 and then we saw that they got hot in March but then they still finished 500 so consistency was a big thing I think injuries definitely played a huge role to why the Rockets weren’t able to reach their potential but Jaylen got hot before Shu get injured I know we talk about hey can shenu and Jaylen play together yes they can I mean jayen was playing his best basketball and then shenon got injured he just continued it so I mean if anything jaylen’s going to get better feeding off of shenon because of his ability to pass the basketball and his high IQ with the Rockets they do need guys to take leaps they need jayen to get to that next level they drafted him with the potential that he could be a 28 points per game score not just in a month but for an entire season I get he’s young but that next step needs to come shenon as well I mean just of course I thought defensively shenon did a better job and he looked like an All-Star pretty much the entire season the West is just so deep he didn’t get in and Men Thompson as well is going to have to work on his handle he’s going to have to work on his jump shot I mean 177% shooting certainly isn’t going to get it done from three I know a men’s probably the future point of this team but right now he’s more of a wing to me and then you’ve got cam Whitmore you’ve got tar een Dylan Brooks had a season that I certain he didn’t expect I know the defense was there but he shot the ball extraordinarily well and that game against Memphis was one of my favorite overall this season that Revenge game the game-winning shot or more of the dagger not really game-winning shot but you looking at the Rockets as well you know Aaron holiday is probably gone uh looking at Jack lindall and I’m looking at a guy like a Jeff Green and J shant Tate I mean these guys I haven’t even mentioned Jabari Smith Jr as well I think Jabari defensively is going to be a huge piece once again for the Rockets as they put him on the fives right so this is a Houston team they’ve got everything that they’ve wanted they’re essentially where they wanted to be if you were to ask them four years ago I know they didn’t get K they didn’t get Wy but they still have a core that they like but now it’s about leaps getting the right fit at three and of course bringing in the best possible players you can the Rockets went in a spinning spree last season now they’re in a spot where they can make a trade with all this capital and they’ve got young pieces for Kevin Durant for example but you’re not giving up shenon for Kevin Durant or Jaylen green right if you’re getting KD you’re giving up a ton of draft capital and maybe a couple the pieces

  1. Reed shot 35% from 3P range in high school when he had more volume. All of you who said Jabari was a great shooter ignored his high school percentage as well.

Curry averaged 15 FGA per game his freshman season in college and 20 FGA per game his junior season. Glen Rice averaged 17 FGA per game in college. Reed had limited volume with 8 FGA per game but you guys are calling him the greatest.🤦

Anyway…Can’t wait to see Reed shooting 50% from 3P range in the pros. I also can’t wait to hear the excuses people make for him when he doesn’t.

  2. He can jump higher than Mark Price, but I don't know if I'd say more athletic. Mark played quicker imo, especially with the ball. I think Reed can be really good though

  3. In March the Rockets played 8 of the worst teams in the league in consecutive games. Any evaluations taken from that period should be taken with a grain of salt.
