Chris Broussard – Phoenix Suns Aren’t Ready to Move on From Kevin Durant

all right Sean um let’s go do some stay in the association but talk about a team we haven’t really talked about at all today the Phoenix Suns and of course last year they got three max players Kevin Durant Devin Booker Bradley Beal Kevin Durant wanted to go there uh wanted out of Brooklyn handpicked Phoenix and uh there is talk now none of it from Durant but there’s talk there’s scuttlebutt there some reports saying he wants out I don’t know that it’s true or not so we’re not gonna act like it’s true but what are your thoughts on Kevin Durant’s future in Phoenix and do you think you know would you be okay with him wanting out or asking out I guess is there any reason outside of the fact that the people that made these moves still have jobs in Phoenix that they are they haven’t already decided you know what on the surface this looked like it had potential but it actually doesn’t work because first of all Bradley builds a diminished version of what he was in his prime he’s not the same Elite player that he used to be injuries what whatever you want to call it and what they had to give up to add Durant took away the entirety of the bench they lack size they lack depth and and it shows itself you know when they get in you know Series in the west where when you look at how the West looks moving forward OKC Minesota Dallas Denver like Phoenix isn’t on the same level as any of those teams I think there are Notch but no teams like the Lakers and the Clippers as well assuming that Paul George returns um I think the reason that and I don’t look they are kind of conflicting reports I guess uh because some people think they will look to trade Durant and others are saying no their owner Matt ishbia came out and said they’re not trading I believe ishbia uh I’m not saying just because he said it but I don’t think they’re ready to move on from Kevin Durant because I don’t think you bring in Mike buen holes or a championship coach uh who you’re paying $10 million a year for a rebuild not that he can’t be a rebuild coach I think he could but I think they look at it like we didn’t get the most out of our Squad we weren’t healthy very often you know with Beal um and so we’re bringing in a championship level coach that can get the most out of this team Chris you’re being too analytical let’s just be logical for a second can the Phoenix Suns is currently con I’m not telling you what I think even compete for a Western Conference Championship I’m not telling you what I think I’m tell you what they think I what I think they think I agree I don’t think they’re winning the West next year yes but I think they’re saying we got Kevin Durant we got Bradley and Beal doesn’t need to be what he used to be he’s the third guy he’s still a good third guy but he’s not the a third guy on the level of a Drew holiday and and those guys like and they well he’s offensively he can be better than Drew holiday but and he’s not the defender but he’s banged up all the that’s his main problem he’s always hurt but my point is I and I I’m not arguing with you that they can win the West what I’m saying is they are looking at their roster saying why why am I gonna break this up to start from the bottom that’s what they’re saying I think and they’re I think they’re saying we gonna give it one shot this year and see what we can do and then if we have to start breaking it up from there they will now I look I I think it will make some sense maybe to move Durant for younger pieces that are more on the timeline of Devin Booker but I don’t think they’re going to do that and Devon Booker’s how old 26 so you think if he’s got probably another eight years in his prime based on you know guys are getting into their mid-30s still being you know pretty capable 27 why waste any of those years I don’t think they look at it as a waste I think they’re saying let’s see what we we can do with a a what they view as a better Coach what they really need is is a point guard they never should have made the B trade where they gave up Chris Paul I know Chris isn’t what he used to be obviously but they need a decision maker well they they need some their biggest problem was the fourth quarters stop purchasing lemons and it’s not a knock on Bradley Bill I followed him since he was a player at University of Florida I’m a big fan but he’s is who he is at this point in his career a guy that’s always hurt so why would you trade for a guy and give up legit asset I mean it was a terrible it was a terrible trade right and it’s a big contract can’t it’s hard to move him now right so like as as a guy that looks at the NBA they continually do this like why accumulating and acquire these guys that have proven they aren’t reliable even from an availability standpoint well this is an owner that just CA came been trying to hit home runs right away but do you how would you feel if Kevin Durant asked out like he asked out of Brooklyn I mean that’s kind of what Kevin Durant has done right well he asked out it started with asking out of Oklahoma City and then it started well he just left there as a free agent right asking out of Golden State well he just left there as a free agent to me when you leave you’re asking out cuz he had the opportunity to stay over those places then it was asking out of Brooklyn then it was asking out of what was it Boston next you know no no he went he went uh OKC Golden State Brooklyn Now Phoenix Now Phoenix right it’s I mean it’s just kind of like I think if he could do it over again let me say this and I think young players can learn from Kevin Durant and they can learn from LeBron I think LeBron’s made some mistakes too when it comes to trying to be player and GM you know trying to think that they can put a team together and coach said Team he never should have left Golden State and I think the only reason he left golden state was because of the media the media chastised and criticize him as such a intense level that it made him decide I got to prove that I can do it without this group and I I brought up these young guys stop letting the media dictate your decisions like the right basketball decision for him was to stay in Golden State forget all the noise that’s certainly true that is certainly true and here’s the the thing this is what he lost now obviously he’s an all-time great player top 25ish player ever some some have him higher way way higher than that um first ballot Hall of Famer easy like he’s a all-time great but can you imagine if he had stayed in Golden State at least two right let so let’s say he’s got four championships now he’s Finals MVP three maybe four times probably three now people are talking about him Sean in the Kobe as the top 10 LeBron absolutely yeah top 10 player of all time like right now Steph’s that guy but it would have been Durant and now so that’s what he lost and now it’s like okay is he a top 20 player most people do have him in the top 20 but that and most people have Steph ahead of Durant so that that’s some of what he lost I I totally agree with you on that here’s my thing though and it’s the same for Joel embiid I don’t want to hear Kevin Durant or Joel embiid ask out of their current situation demand a trade MH like to me when you a superstar you only demand a trade when you have baled out you have exhausted all of your abilities and clear it’s clear to everyone you did everything you could and it wasn’t your fault and guys just you the the the front office didn’t put the right players around you you don’t have any Talent around you they just did a bad job as a coach or a front office or the other players like LeBron when LeBron left Cleveland I know people did get mad at him and fault him I didn’t but they had not put that second start now my issue was I thought LeBron still might have been able to win the championship there but they clearly did not give him a second star but Joel MBI man please I wish you would ask for a trade I’ll be like dude you part of the reason we can’t get past the second round because you’re always hurt or banged up and you don’t you have not performed to the level of your regular season play in the playoffs and then for Durant in Phoenix I would say we got Devin Booker man we got some other good players I know they don’t have depth but Grayson Allen’s all right youf nage is all right and Bradley Bill when healthy even in his diminished state is okay and we got swept by some by a young boy who talked some trash to you I know he he looked up to you but he still talked trash so I’m like I I think Kevin Durant has to own some of why Phoenix has not gotten further in the playoffs and so when you still have stuff you can get better at you still haven’t put it all on the table you still you are part of why we’re not as good as we think we should be how dare you ask out I’m gonna say this about Joel and beid and I’m not the biggest Joel and beid fan because I want him to play more like Joker and he wants to play more like uh Luca at times or or or Klay Thompson right so but I will say this he probably has more of an argument than any of those guys like to me KD didn’t have an argument with OKC they had put a good enough team that was so long ago but we’re talking about embi still with the team that drafted him I you you did definitely right about Durant had let’s look at the bad decisions by the 76ers Marquel fultz Ben Simmons paying to barus Harrison instead of Jimmy Butler bringing in an older hold up hold up hold bringing in an older uh James Harden like made James Harden was still a good player yeah but he wasn’t Harden Max seeing him be what’s wrong with that and Tobias Harris who’s a great a great fourth option every time I see Tobias I go back and tell me if I’m wrong to the decision they made to pay Tobias instead of playing Jimmy Butler well no it was they chose Ben Simmons over Jimmy Butler and that was a mistake right that was definitely Mist that it’s like when I look at the Lakers it’s like if magic drafts Jason Tatum instead of Lonzo ball like I mean how is that organiz you know it’s just simple things like when you look at mistakes that yeah I don’t think they were were they I don’t know that they were in the same drift yes they were that D was in the Simmons draft no no the same draft Lonzo ball Tay went three if I’m not mistaken yeah tayum went three but Ben and Lonzo went to and I think it was okay so it was so Tay man and uh Lono okay wasn’t it it was Marquel fultz right so the 76ers and the Lakers passed over Jason like that’s right decisions like I can’t get out of my mind we get that but Joel ‘s scoring average two years ago in the playoffs went down 10 points a game that’s that’s front off the front office’s fault not at all I and I mean I’m I said I put cont this I’m not the biggest Joan be fan wherever he goes he still may have the same health issues but he has a legitimate argument as far as mishaps by the organization I don’t know cuz I I I I hear you they have definitely made they got two complete busts that they’ve drafted number one that aren’t functional at all and they let Jimmy Butler go they have definitely made some missteps but he has been beaten by Trey young in the fir in the playoffs by by Rick Jaylen Brunson in the playoffs it infuriates me when I watch MB play outside the three-point line when there is no one like even against the Knicks like you mean to tell me you don’t want to just give hartenstein bucket after bucket after bucket on the Block he does but he wants him to be 16 foot shot that’s what I’m saying like he he is a an in a phenomenal jump shooter his mid-range jumper is just is it’s it’s right up there with anybody in the league so I don’t want him to lose that but what I do want is when it is time yes back them down or post them up and go to work down low that’s what yic does yic is at the outside a lot of the time but when it’s time when I need it I’m taking you down low and scoring on you
