listen to your podcast or on YouTube just search locked on Rockets here to break down what the Houston Rockets are hoping to achieve in this year’s NBA draft where they hold the number three overall selection so let me start this off by kind of prefacing what are the Rocket’s biggest needs as they approach the NBA draft and also right after the NBA draft NBA free agency and I think it’s really easy to look at this team and identify one glaring Achilles heel from this past season and that’s outside shooting like the Rockets ranked 23rd in three-point percentage this past year uh throughout much of the season they were one of the worst teams in just raw like three-point attempts per game until post All-Star break where they increased their pace of play and they really started prioritizing taking more three-pointed or taking more threes after not doing so for the first two thirds of the season and this was the team look this was the team they brought in Oka a year ago and he brought an IDE ID to this Rockets team a defense first mindset a defensive philosophy culture all that they embraced it and they were able to Anchor a top 10 defense this past year and that’s how they won 41 games it’s how they made a 19- win improvement from 22 wins the season before with Steven Silas to then 41 wins this past year they made that massive jump largely due to their defense offensively they have to clean things up and a big part of that’s not going to necessarily it’s not that the offense was sloppy it’s that they generated good looks they just could not knock down shots and unfortunately here’s the reality of the situation is one draft pick one free agency signing whatever it that’s not going to suddenly take you from being a bad shooting team to a good shooting team overnight this Rockets team needs a lot of internal growth and development for their young guys across the board Jaylen green Alper and shingun everybody else they just need to become Flatout better more consistent shooters for this team to maximize its offensive potential to realize its offensive potential next season now all that said it would certainly help if they could add some shooting via the draft or free agency and that’s definitely one of the factors at play with what the Houston Rockets will ultimately do or not do with that number three overall pick right now who knows what they are they going to trade it are they going to stay in that spot my understanding and a lot of the reporting around this team suggests that they really don’t want to stay at pick number three they’ve been heavily shopping that pick for what feels like months on end basically ever since the pick jumped up to number three in the NBA draft lottery you know a month ago over a month ago whatever it was this rocket team has been active in trade talks they’ve been linked to the Portland Trailblazers the Charlotte Hornets the Memphis Grizzlies I’m even hearing that the San Antonio Spurs have reached out and asked about acquiring pick number three all because they know that that pick is for sale now obviously the Rockets haven’t closed in on any off offers yet maybe this a negotiating tactic a leveraging tactic they’re waiting until draft night to finally accept one of those potential offers for the number three overall selection waiting to see what pops up last minute now if they don’t make any trades if they don’t trade down if they don’t make a trade with another team the two names that are kind of the Front Runners for the Houston Rockets at this current Point are kuy’s Reed Shepard and yukon’s Donovan kingan now I’m going to start with kingan first because unfortunately if you’re he doesn’t really address the lack of or the shooting woses that this team has what he does do and what he does bring to the Houston Rockets would be a guy that absolutely fits the emo DOA mold of player he’s a guy one of the few rookies that I think could step in day one you know as an NBA rookie and play serviceable Rotation minutes and I think that’s what the Rockets are looking for because they’re kind of caught in this weird predicament where they’re one of the teams at the top of the draft now the Atlanta Hawks not withstanding because they’re kind of in weird situation as well but the Wizards the Spurs the Hornets these are all teams that have been you know at the bottom of their respective conferences and and you know are kind of in stage one of you will if you will of their rebuilding process the Rockets already took a significant jump to 41 wins this past season they just barely missed the NBA playing tournament and they have you know lofty aspirations and goals for this next season they want to win at the highest level they want to go ahead and and make it to the playoffs this next year so internally they’re kind of jostling with this idea of adding yet another young enticing Prospect versus the idea of being able to add more veteran win now type of players and that’s where I think Donan kingan kind of checks both boxes if you obviously he’s not an NBA vet he’s not a guy that’s you know had his time at the NBA level to to grow he’s not a finished product yet by any stretch of the imagination but he would step in and be a guy that I think could help this Houston Rockets team a lot day one he provides a completely different look at the Five Spot he is almost the antithesis of alperin shenon as a big man at the NBA level the Rockets have their offensive Phenom passing Hub you know yic light player in Alper and shingon and then you’d be able to bring in Donovan kingan who could be the complete polar opposite of shingon given you know maybe certain favorable matchups or whatever but having a guy that you can go to that gives you a completely different look defensively a true drop big and absolute mountain of a man who has great defensive fundamentals a strong understanding of what to do offensively good screener quality roller good hands able to finish in and around the rim above the basket if necessary there are a lot of things that Donan Clingan brings to the table and a lot of boxes that he checks which is why it feels like he’s probably the front runner for the Houston Rockets with that number three overall pick Assuming he’s on the board if he makes it past the Atlanta Hawks at one and past the Washington Wizards at number two now the other guy that the Houston Rockets are heavily considering with that number three overall pick is none other than kenty’s Reed Shepard now you talk about a team that needs shooting Reed Shepard could very easily be that answer now again he’s not going to be the answer by himself but adding a 52% three-point shooter never hurt anybody that is a guy that can absolutely shoot the lights out of the ball and he can shoot in a variety of ways he can shoot off the dribble he can shoot you know catch and shoot when somebody else’s is creating for him he can shoot off motion coming off dribble handoffs all that kind of stuff he can shoot it from anywhere and everywhere on the floor in addition to the fact that he’s just a really polished fundamentally Sound Player he’s a stabilizing force on the basketball court and when you look at the Rockets kind of their young core of six players that they have none of their core six of guys Jaylen green Alin shenon Jabar SM junr tar een cam Whitmore and amen Thompson none of their core six possess the skill sets or the abilities of Donovan kingan or Reed Shepard that’s the argument for staying put at number three and just selecting one of those two guys because then you’re adding another enticing young Prospect you’re building out your core six into a core seven and you’re getting a skill set that isn’t already readily available on your roster that’s how you should build your team that’s that’s how you should navigate the draft and that’s what it feels like the rocket should do with that third overall selection if they’re not able to trade it now the argument for trading it there are a lot of arguments for trading it uh namely it feels like the rockets in all the teams that they’ve been linked to again the Memphis Grizzlies the Charlotte Hornets the Portland Trail Bladers and and most recently the San Antonio Spurs all these teams that they’ve been linked to are teams that they could potentially conceivably receive either a future asset to use in future trades which is obviously something that the front office would love to get their hands on especially if you look at the idea of maybe they could add a Donan kingan or Reed Shepard to this roster sure that’d be fantastic but who whether they stay at number three or if they trade further back in the draft with one of these other teams that I’ve mentioned and they draft a little bit later down in the lottery or trade out completely let’s stick with the trade down scenario here there’s not like this massive drop off in Talent from the guys that are available at number three the the the kingans and the Shepherds of the world to guys that are available a little bit further down in the draft lottery and that’s kind of the interesting thing about this year’s NBA draft in particular there just isn’t like those breaking points where it really feels like there’s a drop off in the quality of prospect so the Rockets front office doing their due diligence as they should they’re trying to see if they can extract Extra Value from this pick that they have that jumped up to number three because if you can get yourself a future protected first round pick as an additional asset or the thing that would probably uh excite Oka the most is potentially getting back a win now piece in addition to drafting a young Prospect that’s probably the best case scenario for the Houston Rockets come draft days if they’re able to orchestrate a trade down scenario with a team like let’s say the Memphis Grizzlies and they’re able to get their hands on the Grizzlies pick a little bit later on in the lottery as well as a guy like Marcus Smart who was oka’s guard on the Boston Celtics team that made it to the finals a couple years ago a reunion there is quite possibly in the cards that feels like the outcome that Services all parties involved where the Rockets are able to still add another young Prospect maybe Tennessee’s Dalton connect possibly to answer some of their shooting woses uh while also being able to add get another impact win now veteran to help this roster as early as next season because that’s something that Oka clearly is trying to do there are a lot of possibilities for this Houston Rockets team whether or not they stay put at number three or trade down or trade out of the draft completely the possibilities are kind of endless but the Rockets could very well be the first Domino that we see fall in the NBA draft come Wednesday night now whether or not the Rockets trade that pick keep that pick I’ll have you covered for all of that and so much more over at locked on Rockets [Music]

  1. Jackson, Its about time you stop being bias on your takes.. it makes the show better, im impressed

  2. Trade Alpy for Ingram
    Pick Clingan
Go ahead with rim protector model
A lot of People will be happy

  3. Why would another team trade with rockets if there is no much difference between 3 to 9? Smart does not bring anything to Rockets that Rockets does not have. Get Sheppard or Clingan when you can. Trading back is not logical.

  4. Here to show love to Jackson keep up the great work and get ready for this championship the Rockets are about to win

Jackson I need to how you feel on the Rockets possibly trading for Kevin Durant and Jimmy Butler

  5. How come nobody talking about the center from Duke? I think we should get Brook Lopez. Trade Steven adams. Draft Filipowski second round or trade back into the first and get him. And let him develop in the G league like we did with Cam. I can see us trading with Portland and getting Simons then drafting Dalton Knect and then trading back into the first to draft the center from duke.

  6. Adding a generational shooter in Sheppard opens up the floor for everyone. This is a no brainer. Waiting for amen and jalen to become good shooters is foolish

  7. Top three picks are Sarr, Risacher, and Clingan. Big men are hard to come by. That is why several teams are interested in trading up with the Rockets. Reed Shepard could go anywhere from 4-10. Personally, I would rather have Devin Carter. I believe there is a 90% the Rockets will trade #3. But they have to get a good deal. Udoka likes Smart, but he is pretty much redundant at PG with FVV. Better to trade back with the Spurs, Hornets, Blazers, Grizzlies, or Bulls. Best deal moves the needle. I have to believe that the Spurs would love to pair Risacher with Wemby. That means they have to move up too. Whatever happens, the top three picks should be those three. Even if no team trades with the Rockets, they could use either Risacher or Sarr. Clingan is too valuable to pass up even if he is a backup that can be traded in the future.
