Mavs Interested In Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Klay Thompson? | The Get Right
Blake we just got something come across the timeline from the great Mark Stein does really good work at his substack that’s almost not almost it is a must follow for Mavs fans and he tweeted something out that is kind of interesting when it comes to your Dallas Mavericks we’ve been looking for the idea of some movement and some motion when it comes to this team in their offseason and this isn’t motion but this is maybe a little insight into what the organization’s thinking we love rumors we love giving the toos what you want to hear that’s what you get when you listen late at night to the G right from the 571 love listening to y’all on these late nights we love talking to you on these late nights per Mark Stein the Dallas Mavericks are reportedly interested in cavius Caldwell Pope but the Denver Nuggets may be unwilling to facilitate a sign and trade League sources say there would be a mutual interest in free agency between cwell Pope and the Dallas Mavericks the Dallas Mavericks but the Dallas Mavericks can only get into Pope’s projected salary range via a signning trade he said markstein tweeted this mhm or is this this in a substack and it’s kind of in substack got you yes sir and it is believed that the Nuggets do not want to participate in a signing trade with an inter conference rival Dallas just supplanted Denver as the NBA’s western conference champions even if that means losing cwell Pope without compensation to nuggets they’re not trying to help the Mavs but the Mavs like hey we want we want kcp and the only way to really make it happen is that sign in trade but if you were to hit free agency the Mavs and Casp have interest it’s just making the money work that that’s very interesting to me um yeah I think you laid it out nicely cavius cwell Pope is a player that they’re interested in so let’s start there first of all that the Mavericks like cavius callwell Pope if you’re unfamiliar with his game um the ultimate role player the ultimate plug-and playay yeah cavius callwell Pope is very much that 31 years old um he’s a 65 kind of guard so um I think Tim Hardway junr but better yeah I mean he he shoots the ball decently well can kind of run offense he operates kind of like a combo guard really strong defensively absolutely now s the size isn’t there in a huge way to like guard like the wings that the Mavericks obviously but having a having a uh Defender at guard also matters for this team but a guy that you can trust to shoot the ball light it up that way also if they do this to me this makes Josh Green a lot more Expendable now obviously the age difference lot young you could develop him but just I’m talking about what their skill set brings he’s pretty much Tim Hardaway the best of him and the best of Josh Green at their Max potentials is what you get and kind of the best of what you what you expected and want from um Dante exam as well right but I think that that speaks to kind of an interesting thing actually before we even go there like yeah I think that you nailed it on the head the idea of what they were hoping I think they’re trying to look at or this might tell me that they’re looking at even if they move on from Tim Hardway junor they still want somebody to fill that particular role they want a score they want someone who’s and if you notice all the names they’re being rumored about for the most part these are guys that have shown they can score they’re they’re not trying to get another developmental piece now the Tim Hardway offloading contracts with the Quinton Grimes of the worlds of Landry Champions that’s a different story but when they’re making or running these rumors for these bigger deals they’re trying to get someone who is a known scorer they don’t need another unproven commodity on this team they got a lot of young unproven Commodities what can they grow into I think they’re trying to figure out some stability whether that’s an in or the starting lineup the 9972 kyp’s wife is from Dallas I went to school with her I’m sure she’d be really happy about that all right I mean that’s that’s an interesting that’s an interesting uh possibility there but uh another instance in situation where it’s not going to be easy peasy lemon squeezy when it comes to um trying to you know make that happen or or make that come to fruition because as Mark Stein was detailing there in his sub substack as you reading earlier uh you’re you’re in the same division like now you become a threat as the Dallas Mavericks because of how good you’ve been um in the league and now teams don’t look at you as okay we can we can facilitate trades with them because we’re they’re not the teams that we’re wor worried about you’re now one of the teams that teams are worried about and they’re not trying to help you win no no one’s trying to help you win particularly in the west and so yeah that that adds an interesting idea but I I found that interesting to kind of get an idea of what Nico Harrison and the Mavs might be looking for in the places what they’re trying to upgrade and you can tell again where their priorities are obviously getting somebody that you feel comfortable with the basketball to help with that ball handling um responsibility that luuk and Kyrie have somebody they can play defense clearly is very important for them someone who can knock down shots right and so I know that he he shoot he shot like 40% from three this past season on decent volume kind of like four or five shots a game from three particularly um but yeah that’s um interesting thank you for bringing that through from the 817 they ask is Jeremy Grant still possibility I mean in theory but again that’s those are it’s Jeremy Grant is a name that’s come up um I I think um Tobias Harris has been kind of a high-end name that people thought about Jeremy Grant the push back right now from what I’m hearing and reading is just we don’t have the best trade package for him like he he is still garnering a little bit more than the Mavs are able to give up unless you want to give up one of your really good players like thj the Maxis the Josh’s like they’re good and we obviously maybe not Josh but are looking to offer load those guys we got to think about the team receiving them they’re like okay we can we can get something better we just saw uh what Denny Avia from Washington a lot of Ms fans were wanting to bring him in and they were like thj plus our second round pick he’s got traded for matis tyel in the 14th overall pick like the these guys are Garing a little bit more interest I would love to have them on our team but it’s going to take a pretty P pretty uh Penny to get these guys and I think some of the guys on the maps are just not willing to give up and Nico has been writing most of those rights and it wasn’t matis tble it was Malcolm brogon Still Remains like you got a first round pick as well in that situation so yeah no interesting interesting kind of rumor that came up um in the course of that Mark Stein saying that the Mavericks will investigate the viability of trying to get play Thompson we talked about that from a signing perspective look if he wants to take a shockingly dramatic pay cut sure let’s figure out a way to make it happen that doesn’t feel very likely the way that I’m reading this and I’m just throwing out my opinion here is the Mavericks are deciding right now do they want to offer the mid-level to Klay Thompson or do they want to offer the mid-level to Derrick Jones Jr am I you think Klay takes the mid-level I don’t think he wants to but he might have to but yeah the if the Mavericks are interested I guess you could try to pull off a trade with maxi kba being your main contract but he’s at 11 million which is midlevel you traded hard away away so you could add I guess there was the report of the Mavericks were listening or or at least throwing out the name Josh Green yesterday which once next year starts he’s at is he at 14 million next year something like that is so I mean I’m not crazy about playing paying Klay Thompson 25 mil a year if you traded them kba and Josh Green for 3 years 75 million on Klay Thompson yeah I think I’m uh I think I’m with you on that [Music]
We’re on the eve of NBA free agency, and the Mavs are expected to be active in upgrading the team after a run to the NBA Finals. The Get Right discuss Marc Stein’s report that the team could look to sign Denver’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and then K&C talk about his report that the team has discussed signing Warriors forward Klay Thompson.

I'm genuinely grateful for the opportunity to engage with such intelligent and thoughtful individuals. It's a privilege.🔥
Don't really need another "small.". Where is the deal for a nasty unused 6"9 power forward who knows his role as a defender? Go Mavs..
The Mavs should pursue Klay Thompson. The Mavs were the 2nd worst free throw shooting team in the NBA last season, and Klay led the league in free throw percentage. He will have extremely wide open looks with the defensive attention that Luka and Kyrie draw. Klay over the last 3 seasons is averaging 39% from 3-point land on 10 attempts per game. Furthermore, he brings Championship pedigree experience and additional veteran presence to a young squad. Plus he has a chip on his shoulder.
As good of a role player as KCP is, we do not need him. I'm assuming the trade would be Kleber & Green for KCP. We just brought in Grimes. We have Exum. If we get KCP all 3 are about the same size, 6'5" Shooting Gaurds, not big scorers, and decent on defense. Then you have another SG named Hardy fighting for minutes as well. The Mavs didn't lose the NBA finals because their defense was bad. They lost because they couldn't score. If I recall correctly, the Mavs only scored more than 100 points once in that series. While trading THJ, Kleber, & Green for Grimes & KCP should improve your defense, it does not fix the scoring issue. On top of that, you would trade away your primary backup forward. While Exum & KCP could play some minutes at the 3, DJJ is 6'5" and PJ is 6'7"… those are your only forwards.
The Mavs need to trade Green & Kleber for a legit 3rd option scorer. Names I have seen are Klay Thompson & Jerami Grant. Neither of those may move the needle defensively, but both are def capable of adding 20ppg every night. That's what the Mavs truly need.
Call me crazy, but why couldn't they just talk to another team who would be interested in a couple of free players (plus has cap room) and have them do a sign and trade with Pope to get a good player or two for nothing but some paperwork? Dallas can even throw in money to sweeten the deal (but no more draft picks). Not saying it's ideal, but if Pope did want to come to Dallas it shouldn't be that tough to work out with someone like the Wizards or Charlotte.
klay + jeremi grant = finals victory.
The Mavericks should sign Svi Myhailiuk, Caleb Martin, Ryan Arcidiacono or Vit Krejci to address the defense and shooting. If the Mavericks just want shooting they should sign Simone Fonteccio.
