Dejounte Murray Traded To Pelicans! | Emergency Podcast 🚨

[Music] [Music] hey it’s a no dunks emergency podcast we got ourselves a tray [Music] I’m Trey Kirby and joining me in the yard on a Friday night it’s Tass melis Tass what were you doing when you heard dejonte Murray got traded so I’m sitting in a house and I hear people screaming and hollering Outdoors here in the Atlanta area they are pumped for this move they didn’t think they could get this much for Deonte Murray tray and they and they’re keeping they’re keeping the real tray I I wish I was in New Orleans because I think they would also be pumped for this it almost feels winny winny right now okay a little a little teaser you think you’re going to be going win-win here definitely an interesting trade uh I had personally just marinated a batch of chicken getting ready to throw it on the grill uh but then I got excited I just spent all my time flipping thinking about the ins and outs from both sides but if you hadn’t heard the news yet uh W broke it earlier the Hawks have traded dejonte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans after two seasons here in Atlanta in return the Hawks are getting Larry Nance Jr Dyson Daniels who just finished up his second season in the league at 2025 first round pick via the Los Angeles Lakers so the Lakers 25 pick next draft and the least favorable of the 2027 first round pick from either the bucks or the Pelicans is coming back to Atlanta so a couple of first round picks Larry n Jr Dyson Daniels coming to Atlanta from New Orleans I don’t know which side you want to start with Tas is this uh more about let’s talk Pelicans getting the player or let’s talk Hawks getting the picks yeah the thing about the Hawks I’m starting Hawks I can’t I can’t help it but be a local boy here okay because we came into the offseason thinking is it gonna be Trey or dejonte who gets dealt they can’t roll back with the exact same thing and so for many people thought well they’re going to get the most in return for Trey totally understandable Trey would get more but after seeing this package that New Orleans was willing to give two first round picks and two actual players that are going to be part of the rotation I think that’s a really good get for Landry Fields here because yes dejonte Murray did cost four first rounders and zero players uh basically a couple years back but they just have not been good they have been subpar and you go get a guy in Dyson Daniels who I think I’m I’m Dreaming here but I think is going to really really help that defensive side of things because I know people think well the ball just goes through Trey and this offense isn’t all that good listen the Hawks the last four seasons their defense really hasn’t been the problem go back four years they were eighth the next year after that they were second in offense then they were seventh and then they were 12th pretty respectable um it’s the defensive side that’s been bad in all those years it’s been 20th and I think what they really have to do is build a team thinking I’m thinking Iverson like where it’s like the ball is going to be in this guy’s hands you got to defensive guys around him and Dyson Daniels as you said he’s the second year uh through his his career has been a really good Defender coming off the bench for the Pelicans now they have so many in terms of perimeter Defenders and and how good their defense of it is they said that’s fine we we’ll put him in there uh and they threw in L Larry Nance as well and I think the the point of attack for offenses coming against the Hawks has been so easy but Tyson D I believe is going to start beside Trey young is going to be pretty damn good beside him so uh there’s that and then you know all right I I got to stop you because I got a couple of questions that that are coming through first of all it sounds to me like you think this is a great return I should mention as scrud said here in the Stream team Hawks also getting EJ Liddell uh he played at Ohio State he missed his entire rookie year but also coming back uh in this trade you’re telling me this is a good return for the Hawks when we just saw M Bridges get five first round picks yeah on a longer contract never been an All-Star yeah the game has changed listen those five picks aren’t going to be all that great and but there he’s he’s going to a Knicks team that should be an Eastern Conference finalist they know they got to pay for something and yeah you’re giving up picks that are going to be in the 20s but that’s what the that’s what the Hawks are getting back like the Lakers pick next year this year it was 17 the Pelicans said we don’t want that pick we well we want next year’s pick so that one you know you think it’s probably in the teens likely and then the less favorable of the bucks or the Pelicans in the future yeah so in the teens for listen the dejonte return a ain’t going to be as good as Mikel Bridges that’s that’s a fact uh I know Mel Bridges hasn’t made an All-Star team but yeah I think that the ceiling is higher dejonte Murray is 27 and he’s he’s able to score and he’s going to help out the Pelicans I just know that it’s it’s a bit of a sunk cost theory here they gave up four picks Travis schank said here’s four picks for dejonte Murray this team came they were just didn’t have a very good season this year or last year now it’s basically like who are you picking in Trey or Deon uray I understand the Trey offense at times yeah leaves a little to be desired but they put up points and so I don’t the fact is that unlike Mel briges they’re getting a guy in D daniiel who’s going to contribute and I think Larry Nance is actually going to contribute even though he’s you know getting on an age I just didn’t see this coming in a return for Deonte now the the Pelicans I don’t know how you feel like where we hold on hold on before we get to the Pelicans I got a you think you think the Hawks are still gonna keep Trey young after this trade I yeah I think so I think that’s a luck uh I I know but they still they still owe a pick to the Spurs next year unprotected and so I mean that’s the that’s the concern for me is they did get two picks back here but they’re not going to be incredible picks and they still owe everything uh to the Spurs so they’re going into the season next year currently with Trey young either bogdon bogdanovich or Dyson Daniels at the two then either their number one overall pick young guy Zack Reay or DeAndre Hunter at the three then Jaylen Johnson and sadique Bay at the big forward when Bay returns from injury and then capella has been in trade rumors but maybe it’ll be a kongu that’s not a team that has improved compared to last season when they finished 10th they’re going to be over 500 uh I think you know in a in a in a roster in a locker room where everybody is working together you’re going back to the John’s Colin days where everybody’s playing hard together I think it’s at above 500 team in the Eastern Conference that that means you’re a playoff team playoff is you know like an eigh seated team so the the picks going back to San Antonio yeah I think they’ll also be sort of a uh a middle of the road pick like you know mid first round which you know they’ve also gotten from the Pelicans so you know it’s a bit of a wash there that I think uh they really believe in DeAndre Hunter I know he is always hurt but he did have a good season this year Jaylen Johnson at the four and then the five it’s going to be right now it’s a combination of clink capella and anen kongu and Larry Nance which I think that’s where the trade comes from I think they’re trying to as as quickly as possible get rid of uh Clint capella and and those dollars but yeah I may be I may be blue sky in here a little bit I may be a little bit rose-colored glasses I think though that the Hawks are they’re are they better than than what they were last year record-wise probably not but I think they will play better on the defensive ENT so they’ll just be a harder team I think I think that’s what they’re they’re trying to be it’s just a harder team to play they’re trying to be a better defensive team I would say that that’s pretty obvious uh with what Landry Fields has done so far he’s gone for a wing in ree with the number one pick and he’s tried to acquire a wing here for Dyson Daniels who has had some moments but really hasn’t established himself yet the Hawks won 36 games uh last year I think that this is the first move and I think that the Trey Young trade will probably come pretty soon after I would say the best thing for me that has happened for the Hawks in this trade is they get into the 2025 draft since the Spurs are getting their pick this is supposed to be a loaded draft so at least they now have something uh going next summer uh when the picks come around but I would hope the return for Trey young uh is closer uh to male Bridges but apparently the offers just weren’t out there for Deonte Murray or at least what they deemed good enough offers because they tried to trade him at the trade deadline I bet the Lakers are probably pretty upset that they couldn’t pull off a trade this cheaply for Deonte Murray at the deadline last year but you know sometimes there’s a Lakers tax we’re going to make you pay more because we don’t want to help you out all that much we don’t necessarily want to help uh the the clutch agency always either I think maybe factors into it um sticking it to the Lakers sometimes but uh they got to get more picks back if they’re going to be rebuilding and if they’re not going to be rebuilding they got to find a way to get better because they just traded their most consistent player last year with tryan in and out of the lineup even though it didn’t fit this to me just seems like a we had to break him up a little bit here um yeah and we’ll try and figure everything out going there because I think the Hawks took a step back on the court tonight though at least they’re getting a little bit in return uh draft assets wise yeah I I I totally get that it feels that way that when Trey was out the second half of the season they were a 500 Club with dejonte Murray as their starting point guard um and they were worse at the beginning of the year now going back year after year you know they’re 500 the year before that they’re 500 the year before that and 500 year before that uh so you know since they went to the Conference Finals they were just like a 500 team uh and then they go and get to jont Murray Who 500 year the first year and then and then what ended up last year was was Trey being out he played fine um now I think yeah they’re just banking on the locker room being better and I I I do think they got in those two first round picks and a Dyson Daniels and Larry Nan something that the Lakers could not produce they just didn’t have those type of picks um so I think they did all right you know again I think there’s probably just I don’t think there’s a lot of teams calling the Atlanta Hawks and saying um we’ll give you much more than that really uh because you just don’t know yeah and that’s the that’s the problem everybody knew that the Hawks had to make a trade because they tried to trade Trey at the deadline they tried to trade jante at the deadline so we knew that the Hawks wanted to split those two up which is why the price um the price is so low the the question for Atlanta is still are you trying to win or not are you trying to rebuild or are you trying to win because if they go forward with Trey after this trade that to me is kind of trying to thread the needle again and not a great place to be yeah it’s a good point and I definitely probably am seeing things as a as a local person here and seeing the success that they had with Trey and I think like a lot of Atlanta fans see the Hawks right like he is the team um and yeah if you trade them obviously you’re going in a different direction and it feels like Landry fields and Kyle corver now in the front office are are going to try again with Trey as their number one guy but the expect expectations can’t be all that high I do think they could have uh a top five top seven a really good offense uh that runs through Trey a lot will it produce in the playoffs it has been squashed before like we saw the Miami Heat able to get the ball out of his hands and things not working for them and like like I do Envision this starting lineup of Dyson Daniels DeAndre Hunter Jaylen Johnson hopefully better in another year and whatever happens at the center spot it is it’s definitely being a little bit of an optimistic uh idea that that team can be sort of rally around Trey and play really hard defensively and he did take a little step up defensively but um yeah he wasn’t playing all that much so I do think Dyson Daniels will help this item but yeah I agree with you like a 500 record is all their probably aspiring to be depending on how Zachary is uh is as a player like down the road but yeah what is this team it’s a fair question what is this team for Landry fields and Kyle corver what is this team we shall see on the flip side of things the Pelicans they gave up Larry Nance Jr and Dyson Daniels and EJ Liddell as we said earlier in return they’re getting dejonte Murray he’ll be 28 at the start of next season he’ll be beginning a four-year extension that’ll pay him 25 million for the the 2425 season F followed by 27 29 and 31 million how you like the fit of Murray in New Orleans I am excited for them in that he will be playing besides CJ McCollum and Brandon Ingram very very likely and Zion and who knows what they do at the five spot I think that’s a total question mark right now because he funa shouldn’t be there but logically this is good uh and I I know everybody sort of assumes uh dejon Murray is this great defensive uh player but really I think I think that’s just a little bit overshot I mean he does like to gamble and play in the lanes and all that but the Hawks struggle defensively and so I do think that’s fine because he’s going to the Pelicans who are are loaded when they do play herb Jones uh and Trey Murphy and I think they just have enough guys so I just am a little bit skeptical just because there seems to be question marks because CJ mccollum’s goingon to be 33 obviously Zan Williamson wasn’t healthy at the end of the season although he played the most games he has ever played with 70 but he hasn’t played a playoff game Brandon Ingram also got hurt so it just feels like there’s question marks while it seems sort of it’s easy to be optimistic about this team right because of there’s a lot of talent amongst those four guys plus uh Trey Murphy and Herb Jones but at the same time are they going to be on the floor I guess I guess they will yeah this team is kind of weird to me uh right now if I’m being completely honest they don’t have a center on the roster and I also don’t know what they’re going to do with Brandon Ingram W was uh saying tonight that they’re trying to find middle ground with him on a contract but I don’t know they’re also supposedly trying to trade him this summer as well and it’s also brings the question like how in the world does a trade go down between the Hawks and the Pelicans and the Hawks end up with Brandon Ingram that seems crazy to me but I wonder if Ingram is really going to be coming back because when I look at this team um I don’t know who would be who would you be sending to the bench now with Murray coming here because you got Deonte Murray who you just made the big trade for you’ve got Zion Williamson if he’s healthy he’s G to be starting but then who else CJ McCollum herb Jones Trey you have to start a center because you’re not GNA play Zion at the five for the entirety of the season but I do think the Pelicans had to address those questions anyway coming into this postseason but they definitely improved they gave up Larry Nance who is a fine player Off the Bench but he’s over taxed if you’re having him start every night and play 30 plus minutes Dyson Daniels I think you’re probably a bigger fan than I am he seems to be a role player Off the Bench though especially on this team since they have so many good guards and so many good wings um so I think they definitely improved and they didn’t really have to pay all that much for it because they can still make moves uh with the Ingram deal or maybe if there’s somebody interested in CJ McCollum yes I don’t know what their rotation will be as you said who’s going to start it sure feels like somebody else will be moved and I’m sure it’s they want to move Brandon Ingram over herb Jones who signed a very good deal for them or Trey Murphy just because of the age although Ingram is is so so solid I think the C.J McCollum worked um with Damen Lillard in Portland and they shared the ball and CJ’s washed man like it’s over you saw how it went with him against OKC in the playoffs they were just too big and strong for him to do anything as the main guy he might have to become a super six-man yeah that would probably be the best thing for this team I I just know that there aren’t going to be a lot of teams offering a lot for 33 million next year and then 30 the next year for a guy who really struggled in that playoff series yeah so I feel like if there’s anybody who’s going to be on the team for sure it’s him because what are people gonna give up for him he’s also the vet there now you know as a 33y old guy with valent chunis likely heading out like he will be the teaching veteran as well as being a bit of a locker room presence and probably coming off the bench I kind of think Ingram is still G to be gone because they’ve got so many good players uh in herb and In Trey Murphy that should be seeing a lot of time and that also don’t necessarily need the ball as much as Brandon Ingram does I think Brandon Ingram and dejonte Murray have incredibly overlapping skill sets they both want to be in the mid-range they both can shoot the ball pretty well with the ball in their hands but aren’t necessarily catch and shoot players good passers but again that means they have to have the ball because they’re not necessarily connecting plays so I don’t necessarily love the idea of Murray and Ingram together I like the team better if it’s Murray Zion and then figuring out all these other guys around them totally with you uh and it’s difficult I think for David Griffin in the Pelicans front office to say all right Zion got hurt again CJ wasn’t all that good um and to say oh we’re gonna pay Brandon Ingram some more money you got to make a choice um Brandon Ingram was also hurt just before that playoff series and so you look back at how many games he’s missed I mean he’s missed a lot of games going back the last couple years he only played in 45 the year before last year where he missed a chunk of time and then 55 the year before that so I think you you gotta weigh things out here if you’re David Griffin Zion we we don’t know if he’s going to be healthy obviously you’re positive about it but you got a guy in Brandon Ingram who isn’t able to stay on the floor so yeah you got to go with the young herb and you know Trey Murphy and that guy who’s they’re going to pay I’m I’m sure to keep around so uh that’s more money that’s got to go to somebody but yeah the Center spot’s also a question so there’s a lot of questions with this team but they they did get more talented uh with this one but it sure feels like there’s another move to be dealt like he said David Griffin did say we’re gonna be active but does that mean giving Brandon Inger more money that sounds that sounds off doesn’t sound right yeah uh I think acquiring deant Murray counts as active but you know they still have a ton of things to do they did draft a EES Mei I believe is his name uh a center out of Baylor in the draft he’ll probably get a look but uh unless he’s Derek Lively mode you know relying on a c a rookie Center doesn’t necessarily lead to long-term success or or short-term success I should say uh but yeah they’ still got moves to make so which do you think is more realistic which happens first uh a Brandon Ingram trade to somewhere else maybe Philadelphia maybe Cleveland I don’t know who else would get in the mix for a Trey Young trade the Lakers have obviously uh been a rumor with him and then I suppose the Spurs maybe could resurface uh as a place but I think that’s more uh wish casting from the Hawks point of view to be able to get back their drafts yeah that’s a great question I do think it’s the Pelicans trading Brandon Ingram because you want to build your team like it should be built and it just feels like CJ mccum needs the ball his hands as you said uh and and obviously dejonte muray wants the ball his hands and then there’s another point guard and he’s 68 and 260 pounds and that’s Zion Williamson like they’re they’re they do overlap um and Brandon Ingram’s contract because it’s only one year right now um that’s left on it is probably desirable for other teams to give a shot and the two teams you mentioned in Cleveland and Philly um probably Philly more so depending on what happens uh otherwise like whoever they’re trying to get I think they would want him as their you know their number three guy along with maxi and embiid and would probably be more willing to pay it than the Cavs who you know are rolling next year right now with Garland Mitchell and and their two bigs and Moy and and Jared Allen although he would fit um and I know you call him Isaac no scoro but uh I think they would they would probably throw aoro in there just because he’s far cheaper than than Brandon Ingram that that seems like a Philly fan or Philly move replacing Tobias Harris uh but I don’t know what what is what is New Orleans getting for him probably not all that much um from Philadelphia because I don’t know what they have really to offer um I haven’t gone through got c space uh and they don’t have any players on their team right now so it would definitely be picks and stuff uh but yeah we shall see I think uh I think Ingram is still likely to be moved and I don’t know the Hawks are just such in a middle zone right now even after this trade that I think that something’s got to be coming for them um either way uh any final thoughts either way for these couple of teams well uh I don’t know why Landry Fields was so super duper excited uh when they picked Zachary as we said we we watched their their War Room pumped they were super pumped uh I guess they were really pumped for their 20-year employee who made his first pick I think that’s what the case was but I I don’t know this is a different front office now that Travis schank made the move for Deonte Murray in the summer of 2022 and then basically two months into the season they moved on from travish lank and they said we got to change it up and so this is this is Landry’s first big move this is um their first it’s it’s it’s like I mean they really just they traded away John Collins for NADA and then they traded all that for Deonte Marine then they trade him for this in return and their drafts their draft picks haven’t worked all that well it’s uh it’s a tough job being a GM um I guess that’s why Travis schank is in Washington yeah so yeah I am interested to see because New Orleans can’t be done they can’t be done um but yeah I mean that’s why I think the Hawks can’t be done either because you mentioned the draft pick’s not hitting it’s because they pick 14th and 15th every year they’re picking AJ Griffin and Kobe buffkin those guys have a shot to be something but they’re not guaranteed guys like you get in the top five it would be smart of the Hawks to go that way that’s what happens with teams caught in the middle uh and this is maybe them like you’re saying starting to move on uh from the end of the Travis flank era and Landry Fields kind of setting himself up for their next version of their team uh that ends up being good we shall see luckily they’re in the Eastern Conference because there’s just bad teams uh unlike the Western Conference which is going to be a bloodbath uh for the Pelicans just because how strong everybody’s getting over on that side yeah exactly like I don’t necessarily know that just adding dejonte Murray to this team even if they are able to bring back Brandon Ingram find a center out there there are you know I mean they could pick up Andre Drummond as a veteran minimum and roll with him as their starter and then play some small ball with Zion at the five or something if they wanted to something simple like that but adding just Murray to this team and bringing everybody else back s valent chunis that to me doesn’t necessarily equal a top six seed in the Western Conference which is you know the minimum goal I think for the Pelicans next season don’t bring back Cody Zeller just don’t bring him back don’t bring back Cody Zeller whatever you do yeah it wasn’t working it was not working whatever you do don’t bring back Cody Zeller as for us we will be back uh at the very latest Sunday I think we’re going to start streaming at about 5:30 eastern time doing some free agency stuff who knows if any other trades will go down over the weekend Tas you got any big plans or are you on standby for the wheeling and dealing I’m just going to stand outside here in Atlanta and uh wait for people to yell and scream when they trade Trey young if it happens uh cause because reading the comments after this happened you know especially on on the athletic athletic pieces it was basically we’re not any better um which I understand I totally get that it’s this is Hawks fans you’re saying I mean every comment in the Stream team if we’re being quite honest say the Hawks got fleeced in this trade they did not get fleeced I do not think they got fleeced um to you’re big Daniels guy well yeah yeah watching him play now I I didn’t watch him back when he was uh playing in Australia and he was at the Australian Institute of sport uh in canar Australia but that guy is tough uh defensively so it’s like they’re definitely building around sort of an older team I mentioned Allen Iverson as the Trey young it would be nice if everybody could shoot and everybody could score and they’re they’re saying hey Dyson stand behind the three-point line and just defend like freaking crazy and defend the first guy that brings the ball across because he’s and he was a decent okay decent is a strong word but he’s above 30% shooting the ball sometimes he’s good sometimes he ain’t that good so yeah he’s got aoro potential he could be an Isaac aoro someday one day one day dream about it man so yeah I understand people are upset about it I guess I guess we’re Ling on Trey young to be that guy if you think they’re going to be back to 500ish um he’s got to go back to his old ways and they got to play around him and they gotta be freaking healthy so that’s another part of it I’m going back to the old me we’ll be back very soon to talk about more basketball you heard it here first have a great time turn up love you guys awesome thanks for joining us and remember yall forgot about me the old me now the Dr he’s back the sure embrace the trades [Music] people every day and I’d be happy every [Music] minute it’s been

No Dunks emergency podcast to discuss the New Orleans Pelicans acquiring Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks for Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance Jr. and a couple of first-round picks. Did the Hawks get enough back in return? Is Atlanta trying to win or rebuild? How much does Murray improve the Pelicans? Is Trae Young or Brandon Ingram the next to be traded?

  1. Murray is not the guy people thought he was when he got traded to Atlanta but somehow he's supposed to have the same value as he did then?

  2. The Hawks to me are the quintessential team that looks good on paper but in reality are bad. The whole is continually less than the sum of the parts. I think it's primarily because of Trae Young's small stature and inefficiency and inconsistency with shooting….Young is like a different riff of OKC Westbrook…crazy stats but ultimately not a winning player because he can be shut down by the right defense.

Good Trae Young like Good Westbrook wins you games…but the bad version with the bricks and turnovers wins games for your opponent because your star becomes a 6th man for the opposing team.

The rest of the team doesn't have the right mix of offensive and defensive ability and size.

Still it remains confusing. Usually I can look at a team and say "they are bad because of this or that" but with Atlanta, I'm like…well all of their starters seem like solid players but they just can't be get beyond being a .500 team.

The only explanation is good Trae vs bad Trae every other night.

  3. Why would you trade Trae to the lakers when you own the Lakers pick in 2025? That wouldnt make sense to me.

  4. I like this trade for the Pelicans, but kinda meh for the Hawks. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad trade for the Hawks, but it's also not a great trade for the Hawks either.

  5. This is probably the best trade the hawks can get. DJ’s value has never been lower. Plus, would you rather have a super role player who is long, switchy, and can shoot (bridges) or a bad star guard who is overrated on defense and can only really shoot the midrange

  6. As a hawks fan I love this trade. Get some picks back. Streamline the offense. No more 20 dribbles into a mid range jumper.

  7. I’m not sure Bridges and Murray is really a 1:1 comparison, when seeing how many assets Atlanta got here vs Brooklyn got for Bridges.
I feel pretty confident Bridges had a lot more trade value around the league.
And yes it’s only 2 firsts compared to 5 firsts, but Dyson alone is worth at least 1 First, probly more in my opinion.
And Nance can either be useful for the Hawks or be traded for something else. I bet a contender somewhere could talk themselves into trading 1 or 2 small assets for Nance.
Edit: Everything I said is just talking about the value. As far as the Hawk’s future or direction or ability to win now, I’m not saying the trade is based on smart decisions. I just think the return value is solid.

  8. Pels starting 5: DJ – 2 out of Herb/Murph/Ingram – Zion – C.
CJ should be coming off the bench.

  9. I appreciate that you could think this was win-win… but you guys seem to think this was better for the Hawks than the Pelicans??? That's not the take boys.

  10. As a Raps fan looking from the outside, I really like this trade for both teams. Daniels is a DAWG on defence and will improve the guard defence. You add front court depth overall with Nance. Looking at the Hawks last year I thought the offence looked clunky. Yes they scored but there was no flow to the offence. This deal also frees up the ball a little bit so ZR can now grow into Young’s new number 2.
My BIG question from this trade is what are the Pels gonna do with Ingram and CJ?

  11. NOLA stole a top 15 point guard for pennies really, just because the Hawks put themselves in a tough spot.

  12. 20 PPG on 46/43/83 shooting splits… CJ is not washed at all guys!

Now with Dejounte as the point guard he'll have less responsibility, I think he's a great fit for Zion in that role

  13. i cant lie I'm feeling some cope here from Atlanta's side. i think the consensus is that the Pelicans were able to give up relatively little, and that barring health they are a bona fide playoff team

  14. Spurs should trade the Atlanta pick back to the Hawks for Trey young. That would be a sick pick and roll duo for the Spurs in Wemby and Young. Atlanta would feel free to then tank for Cooper. Obviously that might require some more creative tinkering or even a third team.
