Could Red Sox owner John Henry end up buying the Boston Celtics? || Jones & Mego

Wick has his team up for sale we get a lot of texts like this 37937 the issue is the Celtics don’t own TD guard no I know I I understand that he bought the team for him and his dad bought the team for 360 million in uh 2022 they’ve made a killing off that sale they have plenty of money so if Wick doesn’t want to own the team that’s why he doesn’t have to and if he wants to get out and sell high or he doesn’t want to be the bad guy breaking it up as Hollinger suggested well fine don’t tell me doesn’t have the money cuz he doesn’t own the garden it’s ridiculous that’s ridiculous to me and he doesn’t pay the luxury tax hardless like the first year he’s going into luxury tax weren’t they barely in it they were like 5 million in or something like that last year so like he barely paid a luxury tax last year he hadn’t paid it since he traded away Garnett and Pierce he paid it all those years when Garnett and Pierce were here there was one year when they barely inched into it with Kyrie was there yeah okay so my mistake barely ined and last year they barely inched into it meaning the season prior to the championship year so it’s like he’s paid it in the past so people who say he doesn’t own the building he can’t pay he’s paid it in the past he paid it when Garnett was here punishing it wasn’t as as punitive but he’s also made a lot more money since then true right so I get it I get it he doesn’t make as much money as a lot of other owners he’s not Steve Balmer you know he isn’t Mark Cuban before he sold his team like I get all that I understand all that he could afford to keep this together for at least a short I’m not saying forever but for a short period of time he could have and I wonder if it’s his call or if his dad who bought the team there’s a state planning going on and as you said earlier mego there’s some sort of mechanism or whatever in in the language of the deal where you got to move on but it’s not because he doesn’t own the building I don’t think he hasn’t owned the building the whole time he’s owned the Celtics he’s gone into the luxury tax before he hasn’t been in it in a while which to me is a case for he’s been making extra money and piling on extra money off teams like the Warriors when they pay luxury tax it goes back to the other teams in the league and so he could pay it I think whether he owns the building or not he obviously doesn’t want to but he could do you think any of it has to do with the TV rights uh what do you mean I mean the valuation of what when they’re deciding to sell it uh well the new television contract just went through so are you are you saying in the future like this he well maybe that’s part of the reason that they decided to do it now right so look television is splintering and who knows what the next right deal is going to be is that what you’re getting at yeah it’s just you know they all these streamers coming in it’s just very strange time it’s like okay have more money for the owners so I I would I would tend to think that the money will be there in the next TV deal but look Cuban just sold right and so maybe a lot of Rich guys are looking at it going there is a bit of a bubble in the NBA or something like that I have no idea and it’s a time to get out like Cuban sold and Cuban has all the money in the world he owns this building why’d he sell and so to me that’s just that’s a nonsense answer it’s like Mark cubin is the as rich as they come when it comes to owning professional teams and he sold his team why and so maybe it has something to do with the right Steel or maybe it’s just he got a deal he couldn’t turn down and people are willing to pay through the nose and it’s a good time to sell it’s not because he doesn’t own his building we can get that out of our heads please do you think that there’s like courtship already happening uh yeah for sure I’m not saying today I’m saying the past several months if he’s been in New York and he’s talking through meetings taking meetings you don’t decide to sell and have no idea what the team’s going to go for now he might not have an agreement yet but he may already know who’s interested and different groups are starting to line up and he has a number and I think he knows he can get his number and so he’s selling and it’s unfortunate that it’s not going on with John Henry and the feno Sports Group like that that would be that would be one where you know we just had a parade in the city we’d have a second parade if that happened uh this is one people are upset about it’s weird because John Henry and Fenway Sports Group are acquiring more things they’re hungry to keep adding and then you see Wick win a championship with everybody behind him and everybody talking about how great he is and saying how they love him and they love the way he’s handling the team and he’s he’s out you know it’s very it’s very weird I mean I guess when you when you don’t make that commit John Henry whether you like it or not made a commitment okay we’re going to start with the Red Sox and we’re just going to keep acquiring things we’re going to build this big Empire and that’s going to be it Wick gck didn’t have those kind of he didn’t have his sight set on something like that he wanted to just own the Celtics with these people and then cash out when it was the right time do we do we totally rule out Ryan just tweeted this out he said hey guy fur can you buy the Celtics so John Henry doesn’t I’m desperate do we it’s possible John Henry to be awesome it’s possible John Henry buys this team right it’s definitely possible is it probable let me rephrase it’s obviously possible is it probable he buys the team I guess so the only thing that I I don’t know about we know he wants an NBA yeah we do know that and I guess the only thing that I would be wondering is would they have to wait a year because of LeBron james’ uh piece in Fenway Sports Group maybe I have no idea I mean you can’t have somebody on an opposite NBA team and he’s definitely going to continue playing because of bronnie what’s going on with Brady isn’t wasn’t there some sort of similar hangup with Brady like like there was if Brady Brady cannot play for the Raiders and own the Raiders so maybe there’s different John Henry will just start another splinter group called The John Henry group or something and raise the money that way that’s also probably that’s also probably true or maybe you can put language in where it’s like LeBron will eventually own whatever portion of the Celtics but you know not until he retire like I don’t know maybe there’s another piece of language you them I mean there’s a lot of reasons for fans that they’re not an ideal buyer and that’s a reason why I could see it just being overly complicated to somebody who’s trying to sell the team maybe I’m waiting for odds to come out on the next Celtics owner that’s when you know that’s when you know I mean it’s a good point I just like if you’re asking me is it probable John Henry owns his team yes he wants an NBA team there’s only 30 of them this one’s for sale so yeah it’s probable that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen but like he h he has to be looking at it and kicking the tires on it which would just be you want talk about you want to talk about taking all the air out of this dynasty talk with the Celtics my God how quickly that would turn on he walked out on stage a winner weekend and said you know what a lot of fans don’t understand is you know baseball players are very expensive sore basketball players some really expensive basketball players the PGA we got to start hearing about their playoff odds like we got to start hearing about that we’re going from parades to parameters so look I mean ideally Aran you said it earlier I see it in the twitch chat as well John and the car uh Jim Davis uh great I mean I would I would love for it to be a rich local business person that’d be awesome I think that’s a pipe dream I don’t think it’s going to be like that what’s her Chambers up to okay is like when somebody’s selling their house and they’re like oh this nice family wrote us a letter about how they want to start their own family here and blah blah blah then you end up selling it to some a-hole because he is paying in cash it’s the big it’s they’re going to take the biggest offer they should uh Ernie Bach Herb Chambers p Davis ptoy and Hillman how much your ownership group right ptoy couldn’t possibly buy a majority steak of the port is asking people for money he’s like I was going to say there’s no I mean like but like could he be a minority investor in the Celtics now that they’re on the Block maybe he can’t own the he can’t run the Celtics uh but could he be a part of that ownership group he has that kind of money to be a part of it I would imagine
