I feel like Sengun has proven himself as much as Cade and Scottie. I don’t even think he was that bad defensively last year and he will likely improve. Not sure why we aren’t giving him a max, though I recall someone on this sub mentioning that waiting is helpful for us going into 2025. I guess because we can go over the tax limit with their bird rights?

A fans idea of who’s worth the max and an NBA GMs idea of who gets a max are often never the same.

Good idea imo, let them both play out this year and go from there. We have lots of young talent and we can’t afford to max everyone.

But it’s highly likely that one of both will get it later, though…

Utah Jazz did the same thing with Gordon Hayward. Hayward even had a very down shooting year the next year (went from shooting 30% from three when he was shooting 42% the year prior) but he was still offered a Max and the Jazz had to pay him at the end of the year. This is all speculation, but I think part of the reason he left the Jazz was because he held that against them it was a huge stressful monkey on his back that entire year and it made the decision easier to join his former coach in Boston. That blow of Gordon Hayward leaving was devastating at the time since he was really the only draft pick they hit on really but it isn’t talked about since Hayward got injured shortly after that in Boston and the Jazz hit in a big way on Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert which gave them success again.

However, this situation is very tricky since they got two guys. 1 more year of data on both could be beneficial.

I can see Sengun getting an extension this off-season, but Green not really. I think management wants to see how his season goes and eventually extend him next summer.

Jalen is obvious but surprised they won’t max Sengun. I hope they aren’t putting too much stock in that win streak

  8. warrior_in_a_garden_

If you extend Sengun and not Jalen at the same time then it MIGHT cause some issues in the locker room. Jalen hasn’t shown consistency enough to deserve it. Stone should wait until end of this season.

If Jalen repeats his last season inconsistency either let him walk or bring him back on a percentage deal. He plays effectively 60% of the time then pay 60% of the max.

Is FVV option next year a player option or team option?

  10. 2nd2last

I think there are a few different reasons why each player isn’t receiving the offer from the team, or a ballpark offer.

Alp- On the surface, 21/9/5 21 YO whose gotten better each year seems like a slam dunk, but it seems obvious that the FO and/or isn’t sold on him. And with someone like him to be a max player (or close) the team need to lean heavy into his ability to maximize him. I know the Jokic comp is silly, but the style comp isn’t and without a nearly perfect team around him, it could severely cap the ceiling of the team.

    Green, he’s not good yet.

  11. The Sixers just did this with Maxey and it ended up paying off big time. By waiting to wait a year to pay him, they were able to use his small cap hold to maximize their cap space to sign Paul George – and then Maxey signed his extension his immediately after. Obviously Stone learned under Morey so it wouldn’t surprise me if he copied this blueprint to try and capitalize off of the 2025 free agency class

Maybe I’m wrong but I get the feeling sengun is not in the plans for this future rocket team’s vision

  13. mikeracioppi

Are there any disadvantages to not maxing Sengun this offseason.

  14. AdmirablePlatypus759

Is that why Sengun was training in air jordans the other day and not in rockets shirts? Probably not just over reading but his agent might be looking if another team wants him?

  15. ElderGoose4

Jalen has like 1/2 outstanding months of play per year. Idk what other team is offering him the max unless it’s a team with a lot of projected cap. Like maybe the Pistons or Raptors could make a play for him but I still have my doubts. Sengun will no doubt receive great offers so his extension is basically set in stone and he’s our only young C on a roster full of guards and wings.

  16. I like it, rookies picked high just expect the max, gotta earn it.

Also no one is gonna play on the tender offer so they’ll be at the mercy of RFA. Someone will blink, I wonder who tho

  17. Reeko_Htown

There is ZERO reason to offer a player a max extension until their summer of RFA. Cap implications aside it doesn’t even give them a raise earlier.

  18. Think_Concert

Since this is Iko, that means both are getting max extension.
