Why Would Nuggets Not Go All-In While They Have Nikola Jokic? | THE ODD COUPLE

I I wonder Rob if we might get a call or two from Denver where some of the Nuggets fans may want to trash the Nuggets because for the second straight year or off season they have lost some key players last year after winning the championship Bruce Brown Jeff Green hurts their depth and they missed those guys this year no question about it this year now uh Reggie Jackson traded so they they did get something back for him uh a young player we’ll see if he he can help him out but also in addition to losing Reggie Jackson who was a key member of their rotation uh they lost cavius Carwell Pope who was a starter for them Rob helped them win the championship and helped the Lakers win the championship a few years ago I know he only averaged 10 points a game but he’s a solid Defender he’s a you know timely three-point shooter he’s a good three-point shooter period but he has hit some timely threes for them and so they rob I here’s how I look at the Nuggets you’ve got a generational player and obviously that’s nicolea yic when you have that Rob I think you go for it I think you go for it and yes you got to spend a lot of money and today’s you know rules with the new second April and the first apron and the taxes you have to pay if you you spend too much they are what they are y’all put them in the owners put those rules in not the players the players ultimately agreed to it but Rob you know how these these collective bargaining agreements go the players generally lose this was something the owners wanted to protect them from themselves as far as spending more money than they wanted to and so now you have a top team and you often times have to lose some critical members they may never get a player like nicoa yic they’ve never had one before as great as Carmelo Anthony was and Kiki vanway and Alex English they’ve never had a yic and Rob I don’t think and I don’t know what they’re thinking is but it feels like when you look at it from the outside because they haven’t replaced these guys it feels like they’re like hey we got a great we’ve had a really good franchise and they have never won anything before two years ago but had a very good franchise generally successful in terms of being competitive um fan base is great and now Rob it’s like they got their ring and in some ways it seems to me like they’re satisfied I know Michael Malone isn’t I know joic and the players aren’t but they can’t keep losing guys guys Golden State went for it when they had Steph or they’ve had Steph and they’ve been trying to win it and Boston’s going for it they got they’ve got a window now they already got one I think the nuggets should be going for it I’d be a little disa I’d be disappointed if I was a nuggets fan um I mean you don’t want to lose people but I I understand where the nuggets are you talked about it yesterday Chris these teams don’t make money I mean they they don’t they don’t make they make some annually there’s a few like last year I think about three lost money so most of them made something but it’s not like you like swimming in money or you’re you know what I mean it’s a cash cow looks like I say on average they might make I’m guessing just looking at the numbers earlier about 70 million a year on average the highend maybe 120 130 but lowend some teams are losing money if if you’re Denver you just you can’t keep everybody you know you like like you have you have to decide who you want to pay right and who you going to keep Chris you can’t do it this is not like endless shrimp and you could just decide that I’mma keep eating shrimp and I don’t care what the cost is there’s a cost at some point that comes with it now the shame of it Chris would be that that the Joker didn’t win and you were shedding people do you know what I mean like like like once you win and I’m not saying that okay that’s it and let’s roll up the tents and it’s all over but it’s way easier no one’s saying no one’s expecting even as a as a fan of a team most people want their team to win can you win once in my lifetime can I be happy can I go to a parade Chris I’m not saying you don’t want a second one or But but so many people don’t even win one ask Nick fans who grew up for the last 40 years right 50 50 years could they ask him what would you take one yes no I hear you but once you win that one if your guy is in his prime you know what I mean like you keep winning I I I you do want to keep winning but not at all costs not for some franchises I don’t know the Denver Nuggets numbers Chris but it ain’t a big city and and and their owner is probably saying dude we can’t we can’t go like the like the uh the Warriors The Warriors on their apron I’m just saying Chris they got an enormous amount money that they have to pay right the Warriors yeah they were playing like 350 million this year and they made the they’re the highest value team in the league right but Denver can’t get in they’re not in that ballpark I’m going tell you last year Rob this season Denver made this is according to Forbes $71 million yeah I mean it’s not a huge amount for for amount not for the amount of money right Chris the operating they were above yeah they they they made money but yeah a lot of that probably is going in taxes right Golden State made 79 million but you got some taxes to pay so yeah I mean I I’m just saying when you’re in that apron you do have to pay I I just I hear you I hear I hear your point as a fan and if there’s unlimited budget you know you want to oh yeah just throw money at it and let’s just try to win and let’s use this window but I’m just saying it is a lot easier to pull back after you win whe whether it’s right or not it’s because a lot of teams don’t win let me ask you this cuz you know and and there was obviously free agent movement in the 90s not not nearly as much in the 80s but in the 90s right but the Jordan Bulls you know I mean they Horus Grant was there they have some players that they interchanged but do you prefer back years ago where teams generally stayed together or do you prefer the movement cuz now and this goes for the NFL as well but nowadays you know you win a championship like you remember with the Steelers in the 70s and the cowboy you you kept everybody and obviously free agency is what the players should have it’s helped the players tremendously but as a fan do you prefer this where guys are moving around a lot every cuz it does on one in one sense robs it makes it more exciting and teams that haven’t been good have a chance to get good you know what I mean so I’m not saying it’s a bad thing I definitely don’t think free agency is a bad thing but I’m prefer it’s a great thing right but do you prefer as a fan players being on the move and even your team having the ability to go get a guy or that they the teams kind of stayed together so when you had a champion maybe they could you know go on a like nice little I’m going say no Chris because when we talk about it all the time and especially during that era of the 50s remember we talk about it with the Celtics winning every year and the Yankees going to the World Series like like like like in those years Chris I I don’t know if fans are like oh this is great the Yankees went to the world series eight out of 10 years in the 50s and the Packers won all the time and the Montreal Canadians won the Stanley Cup every year and the Celtics won all the time you know that for those cities yeah but I think it for the rest of the league and the rest of the fans around the country it’s like God can can can we have a shot you know what I mean like not to win all the time and that’s why I’m saying like if you’re Denver and I’m not saying that after you won you want to throw in a town and you don’t care whether you win or lose again of course they wanted to see their team repeat and they were hurt that they got knocked out but it’s a lot easier to understand once you wanton if they pull back without giving the Joker Chris some Talent around them or like they were at the cusp and then they pulled out you know without him winning then as a fan I would be I would be mad here’s my push back though what if the fan said we got our one and stop going to games you know what I mean they want the fans to keep spending money so I think they if you own an NBA team your goal should be to win as much as you can now I get the Warriors not signing clay this year and you know some other teams like we we talked about uh who we were talking about yesterday I can’t remember the team but or or the Clippers with Paul George we’re not winning it with Paul George we’re not winning it with uh Klay Thompson in Golden State so yeah I’m going to bring our spending down and not pay all this these taxes for a team that might not even make the playoffs right but when you have that shot I mean I this is what this is what separates Pro Sports from some other businesses it’s about winning no I know I me we talk about what we always say uh Sports has a short menu really go it really is wins and losses let me just give you this a little context Chris about the Denver Nuggets um for The Last 5 Years most nuggets fans in Denver had their non-national TV games CR blacked out due to TV restrictions so they had a big problem with the altitude Network so they’ve had like some issues see yeah stuff like that you know what I mean where maybe financially they don’t have the loot that that that they can really honestly do it without saying this is going to hurt us down the road financially

  1. Ngl if you go all in on every decision you will see how short sided you have been over time maybe Bruce & kcp & jeff green wanted bigger roles or didn’t want to be Denver or nuggets knew they would have pay other players & the cap rules were changing

  2. It’s an easy fix, TRADE MPJ for 2 or 3 SOLID role players ! I always told folks, that MPJ contract was a HUGE mistake! Yes they won a championship BUT his OVERPAY was always gonna come back to bite them in the butt! With the new 2nd apron, it only makes it MUCH WORSE!

  3. If the owners don’t wanna compete then sell the team! It’s simple! 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️ we need to go for it! Go get somebody!!

  4. A healthy Murray and Jokic with MPJ playing to his capabilities and Aaron Gordon doing his thing is absolutely enough. The problem is Murray wasn’t healthy and MPJ underachieved in the playoffs.

  5. Let's see, the player salaries have skyrocketed. The max and super-max is going off the charts. Owners are seeing the endgame. Think of the ones who've outright sold or sold off their majority stakes, the past 5 years. Milwaukee, Minnesota, Charlotte, Dallas and now Boston. The Celtics have nearly 1 billion dollars in salary commited and the owners have decided to sell. Cuban knew that Doncic is going to command around $400 mil soon. Billionaires are billionaires because they don't squander money, and will get out before they lose. Even deep pocketed Balmer decided not to cough up for PG. It's money friends.

  6. Its a long offseason but if they don't bring some talent around Jokic they are crazy..yes Jokic is a generational talent and they must maximize him if not he should pressure them to bring some players and if they don't he should leave them..they got a chance to be a dinasty come on!! Btw I believe in Maloun and I think they will be in the mix next season again..Denver was supossed to be in the finals with Boston this year but it is what it is..Jokic is that good that they will be in the mix for the championship every year but they need some debt

  7. It's too bad they didn't have this rule when LeBron went to Miami, otherwise he'd be 2-8 in the finals 😂😂

  8. 9 out of 10 of these big money 💰 free agent contracts end up bad so why would Denver waiste money on player contracts that they will regret a year later🥱

  9. Denver could be getting players for cheap because playing with Joker gets you paid, like it did for Bruce Brown and KCP. The problem is that the GM doesn't do that and only drafts rookies and expects rookies to help them win. It's ridiculous.

  10. If Joker the best player in the world, why do he need more help? Give him the same treatment they give Bron

  11. Chris is the same guy who said Bron (at the age of 39 in year 22) has enough to compete for a title with the current Laker roster. , Now he is currently throwing a poo poo parade for Denver. last time I checked Denver still has Jokic Murray and Gordon… Go get it done. Ain't that what Chris told Bron to do 😂

  12. find it funny that Lakers gave a second round a guarantee contract 😮😮😮. don't tell the fans about salary. I don't feel anything for these Billionaire Owners 😅😅😅😅😅

  13. Their window and the milwaukee bucks window all but closed. of the 2 teams, denver is still very competitive because jokic never got injured and theyre a younger team. Milwaukee is a really old team and have no youth and no assets with giannis and Dame both on a SUPERMAX.

When you guys say "You have to GO FOR IT" You are literally asking owners to spend upwards of 500-600 MILLION dollars A YEAR to have a team that can win championships. Thats what I absolutely HATE about the new CBA and the owners were so fking STUPID to ever allow it to pass. Maybe in a decade they can renegotiate and eliminate the stupid luxury tax penaltys. It wasnt that bad allowing teams to build dynastys. That boston team that just won will require 1 BILLION USD to keep together for longer than 2 years with all its starters on MAX deals. Its no wonder the owner is selling. they arent trying to spend a billion dollars a year with a high risk of losing next season and not making the finals.

Future teams will NEVER be able to create teams like the legendary spurs teams and golden state warriors who's core players stayed together for over a decade. they wont be able to without the insane amount of capital. these teams now have a 2-3 year window and thats it, they get too expensive

  14. I bet KCP averages like 14 or 15 ppg for the Magic. He'll get more shots for sure. Him and Suggs should be nasty on defense.

  15. Parity in the NBA actually hurts the league in terms of viewership. Just check the decline in ratings the past 5 years

  16. The owner knows the Nuggets are a one and done champion even with KCP. No use burning through luxury tax money to get knocked out in the second round again. Only team they dominate are the Lakers because they have no center or perimeter defense. If LeBron was younger he would’ve beat them by himself.

  17. When your team is worth 2-4 billion and 3guys are making 500-600 million dollars as an owner it’s a little crazy. But you got to pay guys who bounce balls in a court 400mill

  18. I am completely fine with them letting KCP go. He was a weak link in the lineup, Braun is already better. I'm also fine with them letting Brown and Green go, they're not worth the money they're being paid.

problem is they're not doing anything to replace those guys. why wasn't Denver going after Gafford at trade deadline? or anyone? they seem to be content to say "eh, we got the best player in the world, he'll carry us" and just hoping their draft picks pan out.

  19. Easy fix if you ask me. Stop paying the top guys 50-60 million a year. Jokic will be making $51‐$63 million by 2028. Jamal is making $36. He's going to get $50 in yr '25/'26. MPJ is making $36‐$41 the next 3 seasons. Gordons contact is only $24 million. 4 guys @ $150‐$160 a season? They have $20 million to spend now
