Bub Carrington (guard) Washington Wizards | NBA Draft Analysis Ep1 | University of Pittsburgh

what’s up everybody Welcome to the sideline specialist 2024 NBA draft review Series so if you guys haven’t checked out some of our other draft and Prospect review series we have a 2024 NFL draft review and Tom our other co-host Tom Dey is working on the 2024 NHL draft review Series so the outline of this series is we take some prospects ones either we’re very interested in some that you know people might not be totally aware about so it might be later round picks whatsoever and we take their scouting report we look it over in the beginning we take someone you know very professional scouting report we we talk about it we read it and we see if we can see that in their game film right after so these these tapes these highlight reels and everything are ones we specifically did not watch until now so that we can give our reactions along with you guys watching at home and we can say what we’re seeing along with you and if we see some of these things from the scouting reports and the first player that I had to do is none other than Carlton bub Carrington as a pit along myself self I got to watch plenty of his game this past season for pit in the ACC and we will bring up his Scouting Report uh right now here now this is from the athletic I’m not going to read this word for word for everybody the people watching back home probably have the ability to uh to do that so I am going to do this sorry about that and leave that there for anybody who wants to read it but I I mainly took some notes on the the main points for bub Carrington now he went to the Wizards and the Wizards still need a lot obviously their season did not go great but bub carington gives you a whole lot especially as a combo guard now he was a freshman last year at the University of Pittsburgh he’s 6’4 he has about a 6′ n reach I believe it is sorry 6 foot eight Wings ban and 195 pounds still 18 years old he’s very young he was the youngest player in the ACC last season he his first game of the year was a triple double youngest player I think it was in pit history but uh in the ACC to drop a triple double in the 33 games he played last year he averaged 13.8 points 5.2 rebounds 4.1 assists 1.9 turnovers a game he shot 41.2% from theor FL 32.2 from three and 78.5% from the free throw line now his biggest strengths his size as a combo guard that’s six foot4 combo guard six foot eight wingspan that is big for a combo guard a lot of NBA teams are looking for that the other thing that a lot of people have talked about not just Sam I’m gonna butcher his name but I think it’s it’s either Sam Vini or Sam Vini from the athletic um he says it in here a lot of other people have said it as well he has what people just call him a pure Hooper he’s got the Hooper Jee he just shows a natural feel for the game that not every Prospect not every even person still in the NBA really shows the people who um have been around the basketball world have played basketball and everything understand that Gene but it’s a little different for people who just start watching or um who have been fans but strictly fans of just the NBA and not seeing everyone coming up now the biggest thing for him is anything off of a screen scoring off of screens utilizing screens to to get free he uses his body well off of screens he keeps Defenders on the hip and this is again all all according to the Scouting Report before we jump into his highlights keeps him on his hip he has a tight handle so he knows how to really utilize the screen in all sorts of different ways whether it’s you know getting close to the screen running his man off the screen and getting around the Hedge uh uh popping off of the screen faking the screen going the other way all sorts of those things and not only is he good at doing that and getting to his spots to score but he is also able to use his passing ability so both of those kind of free uh the other one up and it works great in tandem his mid-range and his pull-up game are impeccable the man’s mid-range is amazing sometimes he gets a little to mid-range happy and doesn’t take it to the rim which could come under his weaknesses but whether that’s here nor there at the moment he was second in the in all of the NCAA division one in points per game from pullup jumpers he averaged 7.4 points a game on Strictly pull-up jumpers second in the entire uh NCAA there and then he was fifth in made pull-up jumpers and he shot 50.9% on those pull-up jumpers and not only that but he is a solid three-point shooter the 32.1 32.2% from three is um it’s kind of a mixed bag so his his off the catch threes and things like that aren’t too great but his pull-up threes his um in transition his in Rhythm threes like those have all been really good uh one of the best pull up three-point Shooters in the NCAA as well and he averaged 4.1 assists per game by the way on a Pittsburgh team that really didn’t have many shooters around him you had Henson and that was about it there really wasn’t that many good Shooters there wasn’t that many bigs that were throwing down lobs there wasn’t that many bigs getting post scores so really he was getting this these assists uh strictly because of his passing ability and to go along with it um Sam here says he rarely made bad passing reads and he was more tentative to sorry not more tentative but um tended to take a bad shot more than make a bad passing read and he also plays out of iso and spot UPS pretty well now some of the weaknesses he’s not very explosive his Blow by speed is not there he’s more of a decelerating guy not an accelerating guy to just blow right by his his Defender he’s not that strong right now because his frame is still pretty small he’s 6’4 only 195 pounds um knows how to like get a guy on his hit but he’s not that strong of a player just yet again he’s only 18 he’s got some time getting to the rim was the biggest thing he settled for a lot of mid-range settled for a lot of Threes he took under 50 shots at The Rim in 33 games which is pretty questionable especially for a guard he isn’t afraid to take it to the rim there was plenty of times that he wasn’t afraid of contact and took it straight there but it’s just not his bread and butter so with that being said oh sorry and his defensive game it uh it it begs the question for you know a little bit of growth because he needs to get bigger he has the mindset to play defense he really gets after it on the defensive end but there’s a lot of he’s overaggressive at times things like that but he has plenty of time to grow into that as well and his biggest question mark in terms of weakness what I talked about earlier is playing off ball because his catch and shoot threes and catch and shoot just shots in general um were not very good so with that being said I am going to bring up his highlights here and we’re gonna we’re going to talk about it so let’s bring those up here I’ll go down here so everybody can see it and we’re going to hit the full screen so as we can see step backs pullup shots those are things that he’s going to be good at now this this one for this series is a little bit different because I’ve watched bub Carrington as a pit fan and um so I already kind of know his game without watching these highlights so the reactions on the other videos are going to be a lot better but as you can see there great pass in look there found the big man open does find some lobs and he puts them exactly where they need to be in transition very willing and very capable passer he finds those tight spaces he threads that needle and then the moment you start to cover those passing Lanes he can do stuff like this he can pull up in those mid-range spots allaha Demar D rozan or Kevin Durant he’s not posting up in the mid-range let’s get that straight he’s not a post up guy because he’s not that big right now could he get there maybe but his mid-range spot UPS his mid-range floaters his mid-range touch is all good right there falling to his right getting to his spot right off the ball screen again finding a good pick and pop in the corner and so that is a little there’s a little catch and shoot I mean his form is good he has a very good form but um The Catch and shoot is going to need a lot of work there it is and um dribble handoffs were another thing that he did pretty well at uh there’s another good little down low pass after the pick and roll another that’s a big part of his game and here’s the iso like we were talking about too very good in ISO now again this is right now against NC and take that take that uh with a grain of salt there because obviously not a great basketball school but there’s his triple double right there um and here you can see the screen the rescreen coming back off of it as his man rolls there are plenty of options for him off of the screen and he has great footwork great patience and we talk about deceleration his deceleration is very good in terms of freeing him up right there the good old step back behind the back stepp into a three and again pull up threes pull up shots the man can pull up from anywhere he can pull up from the parking lot see there we see an example of him keeping the man on his hip getting into the middle of the lane getting into a mid-range shot which he likes to do again very patient getting that Baseline finding the open man and another Baseline kick out so while his explosiveness his verticality isn’t going to be anything that jumps off the page he can still find his open spots he can find that open man everything plays well together right now in terms of the pull-up shots and the pick and roll to open up the other parts of his game and if you’re getting guys like um uh wow I’m forgetting his name um Jordan P woo the logo three uh but if you got guys like Jordan P if you got some any other people that can at least just get a bucket Carrington can find those guys open that’s going to be a big thing for Carrington and if we take a look I just want to see because I know tus Jones was one of the people still questionable in terms of if he’s coming back or not so I mean right now there’s not much on the roster to look at in terms of like who’s all going to be there but you got Malcolm Brogden who can knock down some shots you have Alex SAR who’s going to be a definite lob threat that’s for for damn sure Jonas Valen chunis will be a good big on the Block to at least get it down low to a good big to get some pick and rolls in with Alex SAR pick and roll game with bub Carrington will probably be topnotch there’s going to be some good options here with Washington as long as they can get some more Shooters in there we don’t I mean Patrick Baldwin hasn’t really proven to be much just yet Kyle kozma he can hit the shot uh I’m not like the the biggest believer in his catch and shoot game consistently but definitely a scoring threat enough that if Bob Carrington is running any sort of pick and roll with him that’ll be big time uh and then yeah I mean there’s still plenty of off seon to go to see how this Wizards roster fills out but I really like bub Carrington for this team he gives them a another playmaker doesn’t rely on Jordan P doesn’t rely on Malcolm Brogden doesn’t rely on Kyle kozma a guy that can go out and get a bucket of his own can get other people involved and like I said the the biggest thing for him can he play off ball and be a catch and shoot guy can he grow on defense the defense part I’m less worried about I think defense will be fine with him because he shows a he cares he shows that he cares he shows the mentality that he needs to grow on defense so I think that that will kind of handle itself and the last thing I mean these highlights really speak for themselves I know I’m talking over a lot of these just because I know a lot about this guy but a lot of these talk for themselves but we will stop that there and one of the other things that I think just speaks to bub Carrington’s character is the fact that Capel the coach said that this was the first time he’s ever had a player bring his teammates to the draft and H like get them tickets have them sit out there with him and like hear them cheering him on when his name was called Carrington cares about his team he cares about his teammates this guy’s all about basketball he’s all about hooping he has that Hooper Gene like we talked about I think that I’m not saying he’s going to turn into some sort of superar but I think that Bub Carrington can definitely turn into the solid starting combo guard type of player and a a very good six man at at like give or take either one so that’s bub Carrington from Pittsburgh the Wizards draft pick at number 14 sorry it was traded to the Wizards from the Trailblazers pick number 14 for the Wizards there so we will catch you guys next time if you enjoyed this please drop a like Please Subscribe hit the Bell it let you know when we go live because we also have a podcast and we usually go live once a week we’ve had a bit of scheduling issues lately because it’s a summer we got vacations and stuff but there’ll be more with this draft review series I have a couple of the Sixers draft picks coming up next in Jared McCain and Adam uh Bona and we will have plenty of others a lot of the bigger name guys like the Alex SARS and everything I mean this draft is a little different because there’s not that many big Nam guys but those guys probably won’t be covered on here because there are tons and tons of YouTube channels that cover those guys in so much depth and unless you guys comment and say you want us to look at it we’re not going to bother with that because there’s plenty of other places to to see it so thank you guys for watching I’m Alex fishbine we will catch you guys in the next one peace
