Imagine wasting a 1st round pick on someone that never even came over to play 1 game damn

  2. NeatTry7674

Breaking news: Fran Vazquez has signed a 4 year deal with the Miami Heat

  3. KneelBeforeCube

They should have done a sign and trade with the Kings and the Spurs.

  4. rttrumbl

Any reason why they held on to this for so long? Just the off chance he’d suddenly become good?

  5. JoJonesy

oh i was just talking about this dude. only lottery pick to never play a game in the NBA since the merger, other than Len Bias

  6. Fran Vazquez and Yaroslav Korolev legendary back-to-back lottery picks

  7. BrandonXavierIngram

imagine if they drafted Granger instead, damn

Why didn’t Vazquez ever play for the Magic ?

  10. GraveOfTheFireflies

You mean he isn’t coming any more?

  11. MathewMurdock2

Is he the highest drafted living player (that was still alive RIP Len Bias) to never play a single NBA game?

  12. e_double

You’d think he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets with how he did not want to sign with them.

  13. Legendacb

He has been retired for a few years already

I wish to announce I have acquired the draft rights of 2005 1st-round pick Fran Vazquez.

For those who are curious, Vazquez counted as a cap hold on Orlando’s books for as long as they held his rights. That amount is the rookie scale of the 11th overall pick. These cap holds remain until the player is signed or the team elects to defer to another year, then it comes back the following offseason.

When you calculate how much cap space you have, cap holds count as team salary as well. This number is usually irrelevant for teams over the cap so there’s no point in renouncing cap holds, but Orlando used cap space to add KCP and renegotiate Isaac. In this case they needed every dollar they can, and renounced every cap hold they possibly could afford to.

Is there a reason they had to do this now? Why not just keep it around forever as a meme

  17. This is the funniest NBA story I’ve never known about.
This puts in to new perspective the last decade’s Eurosceptics.
This is loony toons levels of unprofessionalism.

This is up there with that baseball player that’s been under contract for like 15 years despite being retired for years. Y’all know the one

Edit: it’s actually more like 20 years he’s been getting paid while retired. Guy is my hero.

I’m OOTL, did this man really just not want to play for the magic so badly that he gave up any chance at an NBA career or is there more to the story?

  20. pr1ncejeffie

I don’t know what the Magics are talking about.. Fran Vazquez has been waiting at the airport for someone to pick him up for close to 20 years!

Wild to draft a guy in the lottery and have him just shrug his shoulders and be like “Yeah, I’m not coming”.

In theory, he would have been a great fit next to a young Dwight.

Risky move. That 41 yr old could be the missing piece
