(Opinion) Swanson: Ending 213 Era was the only way forward for Paul George, Clippers – OC Register

  1. > The Sixers talked themselves into believing George can be the missing piece to help the also-oft-injured Joel Embiid and young star guard Tyrese Maxey compete for a ring, the Moses Malone to Julius Irving on the 76ers’ 1983 championship squad, or so Dr. J told PG: “He was like, ‘P, you’re the missing piece.’”

    > Maybe.

    > More likely, George will enjoy a hot stretch during the regular season and we’ll hear pundits and fans deriding the Clippers’ decision. But then there will come a lull, and it will likely be when the pressure is on and expectations are highest, probably during the playoffs.

    > Imagine Philadelphia fanatics’ reaction to a seven-point playoff game like the one George turned in during a first-round loss to the Dallas Mavericks last season. Or another string of games when he’s limited by unfocused foul trouble – followed, of course, by Princess and the P analysis on the podcast about how uncomfortable and hard the job can be when a two-way star is asked to do so much dirty work (i.e. rebounding and defending).

    Let’s be completely fair here:

IF embiid and maxey are healthy PG will have more room to operate. One of the reasons for those poor performances is the defense could key in on him more with kawhi out.

Also, I’m assuming the mental toll of knowing the franchise didn’t really want him back had to be a factor.

  3. I really don’t care anymore. PG, I wish you well.

PG no longer relevant. He never did anything relevant for this franchise so, who we gonna get next?

I will never understand how a guy who has played basketball all his life, at a high level, cannot be bothered to block out for a rebound. Drove me crazy and I’m glad he’s gone. Addition by subtraction.

  6. Signing PG would be more about keeping him as a tradeable asset rather than a confident run back. I think the front office had understandably accepted this wasn’t a winner, and the Harden trade only happened because it fell in our lap for cheap.

Being a Clipper long term was a hard thing to envision for PG, the team wasn’t going accept disappointing results forever.

He had already been shopped multiple times. Signing a team friendly deal would just make it easier to dump him, so I get asking for a no trade clause. I’m glad we didn’t give him that or the max either. He isn’t worth that and salvaging the underwhelming 213 era wasn’t either.

    Great article btw

Time for the sixers fans to get frustrated

Clippers need more players that do the simple things like get back on D, box out, shoot if you’re open, pass if you’re double teamed.
