[Slater] Warriors remain in pursuit of Lauri, sources confirm, but have entered the waiting period. Source Article by The Athletic's Anthony Slater – "The latest on the Warriors’ offseason and a patient Lauri Markkanen chase"

Lauri Update:

Not much has changed for the Golden State Warriors in the past several days of a quieting free-agency period. They remain in pursuit of Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, league sources confirm, but have entered the waiting period of what could be a drawn-out process.

Markkanen, as several have chronicled, becomes extension eligible on Aug. 6. He’s on an expiring $18 million contract and due for a large long-term raise. There are several within the league who have grown more convinced that the Jazz, after exploring Markkanen’s trade market, plan to renegotiate-and-extend Markkanen, using their saved up cap space.

Warriors are willing to be patient:

The Sacramento Kings put a substantial picks-based package on the table for Markkanen last week, but they had a time crunch, so it was an exploding offer, league sources said.

The Warriors are not operating with that type of urgency. They’re willing to wait for an answer on Markkanen, believing a level of clarity will arrive on Aug. 6, at the latest, considering the contractual dynamics.

Warriors are comfortable with their current 14-man roster for now, but believes a big move can happen later towards the deadline:

In the intermediate, there isn’t much business left for the Warriors to shore up this offseason. They’re comfortable entering the season with the current 14-man roster, league sources said, believing they shored up the middle of their rotation with three value signings early in free agency: De’Anthony Melton, Kyle Anderson and Buddy Hield.

That group, as a 14-man collective, will not be picked as even a fringe contender entering next season. There’s an understanding, even internally, that the Warriors appear at least one large move — perhaps a Markkanen-sized move — away from making legitimate noise. But, team sources said, that move doesn’t have to be made in the weeks or months ahead, if the correct opportunity doesn’t arise.

Hard Capped at the 1st Apron = (Currently) No room for a 15th:

There is no financial room under the hard cap for a 15th man.

Quinten Post gets the 3rd Two-way Spot:

Quinten Post, the second-round pick, is currently ticketed for a two-way contract, team sources said.

How the current players stand:

Minus the 3 new vet signings

Established vet starters:

Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green are the established veteran starters.

Young guys with a big role:

Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis are the younger players returning to a substantial role.

Looking to reclaim a spot:

Kevon Looney and Gary Payton II are attempting to reclaim one

Looking to earn a spot:

Moses Moody is again trying to graduate to that level.

Plug-and-play pieces:

aka the new Damion Lee & Juan Toscano-Anderson

Lindy Waters III was added because of an internal belief that he is a plug-and-play piece who can defend, hit 3s, operate smoothly within coach Steve Kerr’s system and accept a reduced role whenever asked.

Gui Santos won the hearts of the coaching staff last season as a spark on any given night.

Seems like Lauri and the Warriors have the most leverage here, ultimately up to Lauri and that August 6th date

  2. Bookofdrewsus

Dun is driving a fair bargain, I imagine. The reason this hasn’t happened yet is good news. I imagine the Warriors have a price in mind and won’t budge. This is all good news. The worst that will happen is that Danny asks too much and we pivot to the current team.

  3. spankyourkopita

Just as I suspected.  Thats why some of yall need to be patient  and not be so quick to move on from Lauri just bc we haven’t heard anything.  I’ve said it a million times, Ainge wants his butthole licked clean!

  4. Moody being relegated to trying to earn a spot AGAIN is some of the biggest, most inexplicably infuriating BS. I desperately want him to request a trade now, because he deserves so much better.

    Edit to add:

Also, this comment I added under [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/warriors/s/7NSOOQBSJm) yesterday was mass downvoted.

    >Oh and at another point in the show Steiny said Warriors fans shouldn’t freak out if the they don’t make a major move this offseason and should look forward to the trade deadline.
    >
    >Like were these guys given talking points by Lacob today to soft launch resetting fan expectations for this season and beyond orrrr?

    Then Anthony Slater today:

    >In the intermediate, there isn’t much business left for the Warriors to shore up this offseason. They’re comfortable entering the season with the current 14-man roster…There’s an understanding, even internally, that the Warriors appear at least one large move — perhaps a Markkanen-sized move — away from making legitimate noise. But, team sources said, that move doesn’t *have* to be made in the weeks or months ahead, if the correct opportunity doesn’t arise. There’s enough of a runway to be picky until the next trade deadline, especially since the Warriors are currently out of the aprons of the collective bargaining agreement and able to make some flexible offers with their varying contracts.

Nothing worse then getting lead on like a incel. Ainge is playing them big time, the other teams already bailed out for a reason.

They’re comfortable entering this season with this 14 man roster??? Dios Mio, at this rate Curry will ask out by the deadline. Smh

Time is in our favour for once: with hardly any competition left, the Dubs can let the offer stand and marinate Ainge in it. Any pivot option at this point will still be there by August, as it seems neither Ingram nor Lavine (urgh…) will be going anywhere.

    > With sizable development from Kuminga, Podziemski, Moody and Jackson-Davis, with a fully available Green, with their offseason additions and better late-game performance, the Warriors believe they can win enough in the regular season to remain firmly in the playoff mix. If that’s the case in January and February, they’d be a team to watch.

I feel like this is just posturing for ainge. Given their health track record, the warriors need a strong start to the season in order to stay afloat in the west. Contenders are rarely built at the deadline.

    >Markkanen, as several have chronicled, becomes extension eligible on Aug. 6.

“The Chronicles of Markkanen” sounds like a potential Game of Zones episode.

  10. dolphingarden

I wonder what seed the warriors will be at the deadline. Might be the 10th seed.

    > They’re comfortable entering the season with the current 14-man roster, league sources said

Lol. They’re going to do this and sell the idea of waiting till closer to the deadline to make sort of final push for a trade. Then, because the roster is not good enough, we’ll not even be a play-in team and then no move will be made with the justification that “we’re too far away for anything to have made a difference.” Nice self-fulfilling prophecy.

  12. Robotsaur

So no trade is gonna happen at the deadline because the team isn’t going to be good by then (and therefore a trade won’t be worth making), good to know

Lol the post below this is a poster from The Martian saying “bring him home”

Is a quinten post a bundle of 50x wooden stakes?

I fully believe in the process that Dunleavy has set out. He’s proven to be patient and methodical. I would even go as far as to say more creative than Bob Myers the great.

So far he’s orchestrated a first time 6 team trade and completed it within a matter of 2 weeks. I think he’s been great at navigating the BS and calling things what they are. He’s seemingly a no non-sense type of business man who sees the full picture.

I see Dunleavy more as a sniper when it comes to these contracts and decisions and his timing rather than the bulldozer/charisma GM that Bob Myers was.

Overall I think the right decisions will present themselves and as so many others have stated here that we are in the drivers seat, all the hard work has been done.

I think Ainge is waiting for the dust to settle too as his options have also diminished. All the other teams that were considering Markkanen moves have gone other directions. If Markkanen doesn’t work out for the warriors, they still have other options to consider, Lavine/Ingram.

We’re good yall. Just gotta play chess not checkers.

Pls don’t get rid of always ready Moses moody

Wonder who he’s talking about here. Hmm…

Just move on man lol. Ainge isn’t serious.

  19. Can the mods create a single thread on this? There are too many Lauri posts and there will be more since now we have to wait until Aug 6.

  20. Ok_Occasion1570

I think Kerr really needs to be more flexible with his system. I hope he doesn’t just plug buddy in and assume he’s Klay and keeps the engine rolling. Has to try and actually have plays that build off of the strengths of the roster instead of what worked almost a decade ago

  21. RVAIsTheGreatest

People claim the Jazz are just posturing but Lauri hasn’t been moved up to this point while they have moved almost all other veterans and would move Collins in a heartbeat if they could. That alone should tell you enough.

Warriors also aren’t the only team pursuing but they recognize this is a long game and like we’ve seen with the Kings, Spurs, and others, they’re not in a position to just wait for Lauri without improving the team elsewhere.

This might and likely will drag out throughout the calendar year unless something changes and Lauri at $40M becomes much tougher for the Warriors and other pursuers—salary matching, avoiding the apron, etc. all now becomes an issue. Wiggs would be forced to be included—-do the Jazz really want him? So on and so forth.

  22. EquipmentNo9500

Bassey was just waived by the Spurs and I happen to think he’s a bit underrated. Very good rebounder, rim protector, post game and he plays pretty hard. He’s athletic for his build. Kinda in the Charles Barkley vein but taller.

    “Looking to earn a spot”

    Moody

    End of list

    Me: fuck this noise
