[Wojnarowski] The repercussions of Brunson choosing the four-year, $156.5M max deal over the five-year, $269M deal in 2025 are massive for the Knicks’ ability to keep this team together – and keep making roster moves to close the gap on a championship.

NBAPA not gonna be happy. Great deal for the Knicks though.

i know it’s fully allowed under the cba but the players’ union really shot themselves in the foot here

the cba is so player-friendly it inadvertently created a situation where players can choose to undersell themselves massively to get around the harsh cap restrictions and potentially harm the competitive advantage the cba originally hoped to maintain

    pretty wild situation

  3. Psycho move by him.

Take half of the money saved and start building a solid gold statue outside of MSG right now.

  4. migrainium

It’s not a repercussion if he took the deal now with that in mind

  5. deadassynwa

Can someone who’s good at math do the numbers and see if this means the Knicks can afford to give Julius Randle a contract/extension?

  6. See Lebron, now THATS a paycut to improve your team lol

  7. DangerouslyCheesey

Amazing for the Knicks and a great move by Brunson.

  8. EarthWarping

Woj getting that big CAA scoop today LOL

  9. papichino88

We are in the era of player enablement but this is the type of move that might be the difference between keeping the core together and having to choose who to trade or let go in a couple of years. Brunson did NY a legendary favor and should never have to pay for a meal, drink or uber in the city again.

What don’t other front offices gain their star players trust by putting that player’s godfather as GM?

    Are they stupid?

We’ve had conversations for ages about having supermaxes only counting as regular maxes towards the cap. I don’t think owners would ever go for that nor do I think that would apply here as Brunson isn’t a homegrown Knick, but is it worth having a conversation about this now?

  12. Gewuerzguerkchens

Glad to see there’s still some players that care more about winning than adding even more millions to their 100+ million bank accounts

  13. Watts_Up_DocG

Undoubtedly he took out a huge insurance policy against getting injured until he can get the next haul.

  14. Ill-Bat-2621

imagine we kept him that type of loyalty and belief in the org is insane

  15. crunchtime100

Scottie Barns would never. Cade Cunningham would never. Franz Wangner would never. All signed ~50MM per year extensions and are leagues below Brunson.

Now let’s talk about how bad guys like Kawhi, PG, Embiid, & KD want rings. The Celtics duo get a pass cause they won, but still.

I can’t believe we are in a time where a ~35MM per year deal is “team friendly” for an All NBA guy but that’s today’s NBA.

  16. FrostedWikiLeaks

Unrelated, but now Rick Brunson signed an extension making him the highest paid assistant in the league

    /s/s/s

  17. Fast-Ad-4541

Honestly respect the shit out of Brunson for this

  18. dynamaxion_bill

It’s exactly like what LeBron wanted everyone to think he was doing for the Lakers – but did none of it

  19. jumboponcho

People in here tryna trivialize it talkin about what’s the difference between 150 and 250m. 100 MILLION, the fuck?? I wouldn’t do it but this is an enormous bet on this team being special enough to win a ring and I can salute the conviction

  20. AnxiouslyMikey1111

I am loving this Knicks team. I’ll be rooting for them for sure

  21. thatguywiththecamry

In a league full of max chasers, this contract is great for the sport of basketball. If any team outside of my home team gets to run the East, I hope it’s this team.

  22. Resident-Accident-81

Honestly if they win a nba finals, he’ll be the most beloved man in New York.

  23. Maximum-Attitude-757

That is not a contract. That is the Thibs 42min per game insurance policy.

  24. Knicks…..yall better retire his number for this…this is psycho asf

  25. Iswaterreallywet

Dudes either have to take less money or teams are worse.

The cap situation is just so messed up.

  26. AstoundKoala

Should he have taken the money? Absolutely.

Maybe he feels set with what he’s earned and then some, and his main focus is to win?

    Nothing wrong with it.
Does it sound dumb, if he falls off due to injury like IT?

But clearly he’s looking to win and he’s doing EVERYTHING on his end to make sure it happens.

    Respect JB

  27. SwagSurfingUSA

Deal is a no brainer for Jalen to sign now. People forget what happened to DeMarcus Cousins.

  28. bmanley620

Crazy that he’s doing this. I wish he was able to work this out before Hartenstein left

  29. SnooStrawberries7894

I hope this lead to something like Steph curry signing for the warrior, would be nice to see Knick and Celtic Final every year, two young team going at it.

  30. BillyRosewood99

Truly bonkers decision on paper, although once you’re talking $100,000,000+ who gives a shit about any amount over that…you are gonna be ok

  31. Mental_Bicep

Feels like everyone has wrong take on this. This contract is not as team friendly as everyone makes it out to be. By signing now, he gets to the next contract two years sooner. That fact is HUGE! Ask James harden about waiting until aged 33 vs 31.

  32. TommyMeekPickles89

How can the Celtics pay 4 players almost a billion dollars though

  33. Doworkson247

His next contest after this will be over $300 million with the next tv eights and he already has made over &100 million in his career he will be just fine

  34. godoifodogodog

and Sixers paid 212m for 4 years of PG lmao…

  35. Guess Brunson *really* wants a ring with the Knicks.

  36. Practical_River_9175

Mad respect for Jalen here of course. Lots of dudes talk about being for the team but won’t put their money where their mouth is.
