Jalen Brunson signs four-year contract extension with the Knicks | SNY

Jaylen Brunson recorded his first assist of the 24-25 season on Friday it was not an official one but it was a big one for the Knicks as Brunson agreed to a 4-year $156 million contract extension that contract has a player option on the final year according to a source now if he had waited until next summer Brunson would have been eligible for a 5year $270 million contract in free agency so Brunson clearly leaving a lot of money on the table by taking this extension and I was told that one big motivating factor for Brunson in all this was he wanted to put the Knicks in the best position possible to build out this roster as they chase a championship now if you look at the first three years of brunson’s extension you compare them with the first three years of what his free agency contract would have been and he’s saving the knck $37 million and that is very significant in this current NBA climate where every dollar matters that you spend especially for teams that are spending a lot of money on their roster and you would expect the Knicks to be one of those big spending teams over the next few years as they chase a title so Brunson by doing this he really helps the Knicks avoid that second apron and once you get to the second apron it really restricts the ways that you can acquire players so by avoiding that the Knicks would have really really good Financial flexibility and once you hit that it’s really limiting so again Brunson taking less money makes makes it more likely that the Knicks can avoid that second apron as they continue to build this thing out now Brunson also will be eligible for a higher free agency deal at the back end of this contract if he opts out of it with that player option but look he’s risking a lot here uh by signing this deal on Friday uh a lot of players talk about doing whatever it takes to win a lot of players do that on the court on Friday we saw Brunson do that with this contract and giving the Knicks real Financial flexibility as they continue to build this roster out with the hopes of winning a championship
