Summer League Preview (It’s Cavalier Podcast), Cleveland Cavaliers, Cavs news, Summer League
[Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome to another edition of the it’s Cavalier podcast it’s your boy Mac and today we finally get Cavs summer league basketball let’s go I cannot wait to finally see some of this young Talent take the court some of them for the first time there are a number of players I am very interested in seeing and and watching frankly but before we get into all that if you are watching over on YouTube do your boy a favor and hit that like button and if you are new to the channel make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss all this caps content hell even if you’re not watching on YouTube if you’re watching on X or Twitter or whatever the hell we call it these days head over to the it’s Cavalier YouTube channel now hit that like button help your boy out and if you want to support the channel channel in a small but helpful way please consider becoming a paid member over on patreon or even here as a channel member all right with all the housekeeping out of the way let’s dig right in so many things to keep track of this time around and if you all remember Hell of course you’re remember it it wasn’t that long ago last season Squad filled with talents like Isaiah Moy Amman Bates Sam Marill Luke Travers galifa job and more brought home a summer league title after going a perfect 6 and0 and capping off their run with a dominant victory over the Houston Rockets in which the trio of Moy bait and Maro combined for 74 of Cleveland’s 99 total points in that game now this time around there is no moi there is noero so who will pick up the slack and carry this team home my money is on Monty Bates who averaged 17.2 points six rebounds and shot 40% from three-point distance on his way to being named to the all summer league team that said this year Squad it’s filled to the brim with Talent this is a roster that includes the likes let see let’s get let’s get this up on the board here shall we let me adjust this just a little bit so we can actually see it right we got the likes of Luke Travers ammani Bates Craig Porter Jr DJ Burns Pete n gel saan Darius Brown Hunter Couture Dexter Dennis who you may remember from the uh from the charge this past season Javon Graves Zer Smith nayquan Tomlin and of course the new member of the Cavs Jaylen Tyson the first round pick 20th overall it’s a lot of talent man so much talent that that and and a lot of these names stand out here the AFF forementioned BS but a few really really really stick out to me the first in general is Craig Porter Jr somebody that I am high highly just I’m very interest interested in seeing what this guy can do because frankly I’m a big believer I know a lot of people believe you know the the short back court that doesn’t work too well and I understand that I trust me I get it but at the end of the day some of this young Talent is going to develop somebody is going to play a big role and the question is who will it be right last year we had Moy last year we had uh Merill you know carrying the charge here and and and and leading this team to a sumber League Championship but this year who’s it going to be if not Bates there are a number of other players here that are really really probably going to make some noise players like Jaylen Tyson who who had a phenomenal season with uh with Cal last year putting up 19.6 points 6.8 rebounds and three and a half assist functioning as Cal’s uh defecto point guard there playing everything from the one through the three also shot 46.5% the from the field and a respectable 36% from three-point distance now I know that this off season hasn’t exactly gone as planned for in terms of like free agent editions or or BigTime moves outside of the resigning of Donovan Mitchell which which was a colossal move within itself right probably something that we we’re all very very excited about and of course the iring of head coach keny ainson along with some of the coaching staff when you’re talking about Demari Caro or or Jordan a you know some of these names that have been brought or or Johnny Bryant right some of these names that have been brought to the equation but we’ve yet to see any real moves and that is because frankly we just don’t know what the hell is happening with ISAC a coro’s contract extension and we don’t have a lot to work with in terms of staying under luxury tax right staying staying within the threshold of the first apron and the second apron right and so we haven’t seen the Cs really do anything and so we’re banking on internal growth and we’re pay and we’re banking on some of these guys that we drafted in years past and and this year with Jaylen to to to Really pan out and this is the first time that we’re going to see them in a or at least Jaylen this is the first time we’re going to see a a player like Jaylen in in a real NBA capacity I’m I’m just so damn excited because CU i i i i on draft night those of you guys who tuned into the live stream I was not in a good place in terms of like I didn’t love the pick uh I I was pretty pretty high on Tyson at the time of evaluation but you guys know who I was really really really um pting for that said I’m I’m sold on Tyson right he has the size I’ve come around on the siid because again they don’t play basketball without their shoes so he is legitimately 67 when out there on that court and he can do a little bit of everything and for me I think he’s a player that is perfectly positioned to eventually take over for the likes of Caris LeVert who is entering the final year of his contract could be resigned could be moved at the deadline hell he could be moved this offseason we just don’t know it’s still pretty early in the process but one thing is for sure Tyson is probably best positioned at least in my estimation to make a contribution this year if I had to pick one of these guys whether it be Bates or uh Craig Porter Jr well Craig’s probably right up there too Craig Craig had a pretty solid first year all things considered considering the play time just was up and down for him but I feel pretty pretty uh good about Craig’s chances of actually securing a role this year Tyson I feel likewise Tyson could step right in from from day one and and soak up some of the minutes that may or may not be vacated from Isaac aoro and potentially even Carris Levert so this is what we’re banking on we we haven’t made a move in free agency yet we haven’t made a a a trade to acquire an upgraded one of the various needs that we have whether that be a longer 34 uh in the starting lineup or a backup four five that preferably can shoot and play a little bit of Defense so we’re banking on some intern growth and we’re banking on some of these picks to hit and I I’m just so damn glad that we finally get to see them go to work today that’s that’s that’s where I’m at with them man it’s just it’s awesome to finally get to this day because we’ve seen some of these other teams play we’ve gotten some Olympic basketball but we’ve really not gotten an opportunity to watch any of these Cavs I mean we were pretty stoked when we heard the DJ Burns was going to be joining the summer league roster after his phenomenal March Madness run uh we we were pretty happy about the fact that you know Craig Porter Jr appears healthier than he did at the end of the season when he got hurt in that last game of the year and for me one of the guys that I am most excited W to watch this time around is Luke Travers man this this guy who who averaged seven and a half points 6.3 re rebounds two assists and 2.2 blocks along with uh shooting 48.7% from the field in last year’s summer League festivities this man can do it all he is honestly a he is a jack of all trades probably master of none but if you’ve watched his growth in the NBL with with Perth and then with Melbourne United it’s been phenomenal right the three-point shot is still kind of lagging behind from NBA standards but this is a guy who can do just about everything else out in the court on both ends of the floor and I don’t necessarily think he’s going to end up being the Cavs starting small forward to the future or anything like that but I do believe that he could he could secure a real role between this year and next my prediction is that this man will be signed to one of the Cavaliers two-way spots which I think would be a perfect place for him because he could play some minutes at the NBA level and and at the g-league level with the Cleveland charge I think that’s a great spot for him I think he’s probably picked up all he can overseas and I get I one of the quotes that came directly from him this past season before he joined Melbourne United was that um you know the NBL is just as good as the G league and while people may or may not believe that is the case I do believe there’s something to be said for being around the organization especially if you’re if if you’re going to be getting those opportunities to play at the NBA level because the Cavaliers history with injuries no doubt in my mind that this man can see time on the court at certain points this year uh like Craig Porter Jr did or even ammani at at certain points so I am very very excited to see what he can bring to the equation he was he’s been he’s been pretty eye openening overseas but in our limited glimpses of him in our limited time with him and in both last year summer league and the summer league prior he’s shown you a little bit of everything that he can do and it’s not flashy it’s not anything that’s going to essentially pop out to you you know in terms of play style or anything like that but when you look at the stat sheets that this guy that this guy routinely puts on the table it is it is insane to me I mean there there were games in last year’s festivities where he’s got like against the Nets last year he he put up 11 points 12 rebounds five assists and four blocks at like six what is he listed 66 67 it it’s crazy it’s crazy to see him do what he does and he did a lot of that overseas as well but to see him go out there and do that on a on a summer league court it’s just great and it gives me a lot of Hope for the future now I know that we’re not necessarily in a in a place right now where we can just sit up here and and and and and fallen over what this team has been able to do but this uh this off season but some of these pieces are going to pan out and when you’re in a position like the Cavaliers where you honestly you just don’t have a lot of room for Upward mobility in terms of assets right if you’re not willing to move up off of your core four meaning Darius Garland or Donan Mitchell obviously is not going anywhere Evan Mobley who we think is going to be signed to a rookie scale Max extension here pretty soon and Jared Allen you just don’t have a lot of pieces to move so what do you do when that happens well you you hope that the new head coach that you brought in Kenny ainson uh can move the needle in terms of the offensive philosophy and news flash I think he will now matter of fact I’m gonna double down on that I know he will he’s going to change this offense he’s GNA change this team for the better and I get that there are still some areas that that we see on this roster as I pointed out earlier the the backup four five situation the taller Wing the three4 um they’re going to find ways around this the smallest back court the the short the short three they will find ways around this I think that they’re going to end up uh utilizing these the skill sets of some of these players that were neglected under JB as big of a JB fan as as I am and continue to be uh one thing is for certain is that there were certain areas that were just not utilized whether it be Evan Mo’s facilitation out of the post whether it be Max stru and Sam Mar’s ability to shoot off of screens running set plays for some of these guys um the the transition play of players like Jared Allen and and Isaac auro just they were quite often ignored because of the pace that we played at and and The Limited motion that we showcased on a night toight basis and so with Kenny you know that’s going to change completely and I know with Summer League we’re not necessarily going to see the Kenya ainson offense but we might get a little bit of a glimpse of what it could look like I think they’re going to play with a much much quicker pace and you have to take anything that you see in summer league with a grain of salt but at the end of the day it still a a situation in which you can you can justifiably take a few things away you can take a few things away and so that is what I’m going to be looking on what what what are some of the sets that we might see what are some of the some of the positions that guys might play there there are different things in in different uh situations that I I I hope that we get to see play out at the at the uh summer league level Jonathan vaugh says do you think ammani has or can develop a little bit of a postgame I think the added weight I think it was what 26 pounds 26 pounds that he put on that should definitely help but I don’t know we didn’t really see that in this game at the uh at the g-league level with the charge last year it was really just perimeter shot or at The Rim which even that needs some work there there wasn’t a lot of postwork there wasn’t a lot of mid-range uh mid-range work either so I I think it’s possible but I think that is those are areas of his game that we haven’t quite seen so we’ll have to we’ll have to see maybe like I said the added weight might help but I don’t know if that’s in his mentality right um I’m sure he’s capable but uh I don’t know I think the the the real interest for me is the spot up shooting and the ability to create for himself which we just don’t have a lot of on this well we didn’t have a lot of on this roster in years past now maybe not so much the case with adding a player like jayen Tyson with still having Carris still having Donovan still having Darius um and you’re starting to see an uptick guys who can create their own shot and you can you just can’t really have enough of those guys and I get the huge gripe with it is like okay all these guys are either undersized or very similar in stature and and you know that’s a complaint that I share at at points but you can truly never have enough players that can create their own shot and Amman is one of those guys with his three-point shot being the most lethal of his Arsenal so we’ll see time will tell I don’t know but there are a number of players that I I I like I said I’m very very interested in seeing the progress that they’ve made it’s not just ammani it’s not just Luke hopefully we get to see Jaylen putting some work in right out of the gate but guys like Pete Nance um a player who who the Cavs ended up signing to one of their two-ways last year toward the stretch run and I liked a lot of what he was what he was able to do with the charge this past season but it’s not exactly got like he got a a a real Runway to showcases talents with the Cavs just because of the position that we are in and to see him go out there and and and actually make a contribution this year would be phenomenal because we all know the uh the ties that the the Nance family had to the city of Cleveland when you’re talking about Larry Dan Senor and Larry n Jr you know Pete’s brother playing a a pretty big role here for a few seasons uh with the Cavaliers coming across from the Lakers in LeBron’s final year in Cleveland and so seeing Pete playing in Center position at 611 right and being able to give you minutes at both the four and the five maybe even some three at times um there are some intriguing things within this game we know the three-point shot is there we know he does have an ability to reject shots uh but at the end of the day we haven’t seen him do these things at the NBA level and so summer league basketball is he’s been there and done that right he has been there and done that so there he’s not going to show me necessarily anything in summer league that I probably wasn’t already aware that he could do but nevertheless I’m still happy to see get to see him go out there and you know bring some things to the to the uh to the equation you guys zier Smith who who played a big role with the charge last year uh very excited to see what kind of progress that he has made Gable suban same thing he played with the charge last year uh Dexter Dennis spent uh considerable time with the charge and then there are some names that we may or may not be familiar with in terms of uh in terms of rookies right you’re talking about Darius brown or Hunter Kar or Devon Graves these are guys that that Cleveland is going to take a shot on and I guess you could throw DJ Burns in there but by now if you’re not familiar with DJ Burns and and what he did during Mar March Badness uh for for NC State I don’t know um I don’t know where you’ve been living at you probably been living under a rock because what he was able to do at his size it listed at 69ine and I I forget how much weight he said he dropped uh but he’s a big dude he’s a big dude and the more weight that he loses it’ll probably benefit him but just being able to go out there and dominate the post area like he was able to do uh this past season that was pretty dope so we’ll have to see we will have to see what some of these guys end up doing what they end up uh bringing to the table if any of their if any of their games actually translate at the next level if they actually translate at the next level hold [Laughter] visitors man what you gonna do kids um the the what was I saying man I’m I’m All thrown off now oh yes so we’ll have to see if whatever whatever any of these guys does translates at the NBA level if anybody sticks I think at least one or two of these guys will end up seeing real NBA action this year and I if I had to bet it would probably be Craig Porter Jr and uh Jaylen Ty Luke Travers and ammani Bates they are right there but I just I don’t know if they’re when you’re looking at the Players ahead of them I just don’t know if it’s going to end up happening if you’re a wing that can’t necessarily shoot I think you’ll be at a disadvantage and I think that’s the only problem area still within Luke Travers game um still the shot profile you know the mechanics and all I think it’s solid enough that it could get better but we haven’t seen that with a with a substantial amount of volume but he does everything else on the court that could potentially get him in it so you could maybe see him in certain lineups that that uh that hide that but I think the lack of the three-point shot right now definitely hurts and when you’re talking about a team that is already uh pretty dang deficient in terms of front front cor spacing outside of maybe a handful of players and Dean Wade or George ni players that can reasonably shoot the three ball uh fairly well for Bigs if you consider George Nang a big man I don’t know but the inability to shoot the three-point shot at a respectable percentage is probably what hurts Travers the most and with ammani the three-point shot is obviously there the ability to spot up is obviously there and he has a is going to be a wild card to me but at the end of the day there are certain areas of his game that still lack behind he does not necessarily absorb contact too well which is why we’re hoping that the added weight pays off and I think that it will but this is the first step in seeing how much of that has actually like will it translate will it actually result in all Court production right so um we’ll get to see that play out in summer leue and maybe he’ll turn enough heads during summer league and then there in the in preseason and in Camp that it actually result in him playing a real role this year who knows but at the end of the day I think that’s pretty damn uh pretty damn cool that he he is probably going to get the opportunity uh moving now forward with Isaac aoro potentially leaving and Via sign and trade you know I don’t know there’s there’s still so much offseason left that a role could clear up for him anything could happen which is why all of these guys have to put their absolute best on the court they have to they have to give it their all and hopefully one of these two one one of these guys sticks because I think there is a real opportunity here for somebody it’s we’re BR him with talent I don’t know if we’re going to end up repeating uh going six and0 because Sam marrow in the shop making last year that was crazy and then Isaiah Moy his kind of like d they they ran a lot of offense through him during the summer league and that six six0 stretch there was just a lot that was done so I don’t know if we’re going to repeat because there are some other teams out there that you have to keep an eye on but nevertheless there’s there’s a lot of talent that we’re working with here and I couldn’t be any more excited about the direction that this team is headed in I know it’s not perfect I know we still have some holes but again it is a very long off season there are still a number of things that could end up happening and just got to stay the course because I I truly believe that this team is not nearly people have been really down on the Caps I I get people feel like Kobe’s been sleep asleep at the wheel but they’re not nearly as bad as some people would have you believe they’re they’re definitely holes on the roster but we’re not as far off as people think a couple things go differently during the playoff run and we might have given uh we might have given Boston a six or seven game series and I get it that was last year heading into this year A lot has changed in terms of roster Personnel across the league there have been a number of moves in the Eastern Conference alone that should see some somewhat of a shakeup but at the end of the day the Cavaliers best bet was always going to be internal growth and adding some of this young talent to that internal growth could could yield favorable results it could it could make the it could wipe the the nasty taste of not really making a move in the free agency market out of our mouths if one of these guys truly pans out if an ammani Bates if a Craig Porter Jr takes that that next step to becoming a full-time contributor if jayen Tyson becomes a day one contributor if DJ Burns uh you know ends up turning enough heads to maybe be the third big of the future Pete Nance the the the list goes on but at the end of the day it all starts with Summer League action we get to take on the Orlando Magic if I’m not mistaken uh mistaken at 4 pm eastern time I can’t wait I cannot wait it it feels like it’s it’s been forever since we’ve seen the Cavs get to play because we got ousted in the second round and we had to watch the Conference Finals and then the finals and then all this other stuff with the offseason playoff before we got to this point so uh I’m just happy man I I’m very happy I’m very excited about it and if you guys are too let me know let me know who you’re most excited to watch let me know who you think is going to end up being a contributor this season from this Bunch um and as I always tell you guys if You’ like to um reach out to him you I can it’s cavod on Twitter Tik Tok Instagram YouTube and more if you want to be added to the it’s capill
