time to go inside out as we welcome in our NBA Insider Ian Begley Ian instead of potentially signing a max deal next offseason Brunson left $113 million on the table by signing a team-friendly extension Now take us through the thought process on why Brunson made the decision to sign the extension yeah the big motivation or one of the big factors I was told was Brunson wanting to give the Knicks the best chance possible to build out this roster as they chase a championship Now Chelsea if you look at the three years of this extension remember player option on the fourth year we’re going to assume that he Ops out but those three years of the extension you compare those to the three years that he would have had on that free agency contract it’s $37 million less now that he’s signed this extension and that is huge for the Knicks a team that is going to have a high team salary over these next few years as they go for a title you know this is going to allow them to stay out of that second apron territory second apron so restrictive once you get up there in team salary so they should be able to avoid it while extending male Bridges and and while doing other things uh to other players on under contract but also they’re going to be able to chase free agents with a bigger exception it’s going to be easier for them to make trades now that they’re going to be able to avoid that second apron so a huge huge sacrifice for Brunson that really benefits the Knicks financially yeah making money in this league is inevitable winning a championship is not he’s going Allin for a chance at that Ian so the Knicks made the trade for male Bridges resigning OG and anobi and now extending Brunson what’s next for the Knicks this off season backup center who are they going to get to back play back up Center Mitchell Robinson he’s on the roster he’s here now but you know he has a history of getting hurt so you need a backup center who can start 30 Games next season and I know they’ve continued to be in touch with precious atua their own free agent I think they’ve also had casual trade talks with some high salar veterans about some high salar veteran centers on the trade market uh so we’ll continue to keep an eye on that the backup five is the next Domino to fall here for the Knicks
