The Scary Truth Nobody Is Noticing About Franz Wagner
one of the best young players that barely gets talked about is fron Vagner of the Orlando Magic he was the second best player on a young magic team that finished as the five seed in the East and took the Cavs to seven games in the first round but he barely gets any attention from the national media France has been incredible on the basketball court over the past year and I’m not just talking about what he did in the NBA before the NBA season even started fron became a world champion representing his country in the 2023 FEA World Cup he was named the MVP of the World Cup as Germany won their first ever gold medal he carried that momentum into the NBA having a career year in his third season in the league he raised the scoring average to just under 20 points while expanding other parts of his game many consider fron a jack of all trades type of player because he does so many things well on the court he can dve Drive finish pass the ball and defend all at a very high level his Elite play for the magic last season had him drawing serious All-Star consideration the Magic’s front office believes fron will be a star one day and they showed it by giving him a 5year $224 million Max extension this off season after making the playoffs for the first time in four years the magic will be looking to go further in the playoffs next season so it’s up to fron to keep improving and become a star that can help lead Orlando to a deep playoff run he’s playing for Germany in the Paris Olympics where he’ll be looking to lead the German national team to Glory once again and once the Olympics are over fron needs to rest up and prepare for what will be a very pivotal season for the Orlando Magic with that said let’s dive into the film to see what makes fron such a dynamic player and what he needs to improve on to reach that All-Star level without a doubt France’s biggest strength on offense is his ability to drive to the basket he’s got a terrific handle for a player his size and he’s pretty quick allowing him to get to the rim at will often times he could just Elevate and finish over defenders in the paint but he’s also got amazing finishing moves to score over shot blockers after getting in the lane he’ll often use reverse layups which gets Defenders to mtime their jump so he could finish on the other side he’s also got fantastic forwork in the paint his Euro steps and step through are a thing of beauty allowing him to get around help Defenders for smooth finishes at The Rim his footwork on drives reminds me a lot of May job who torched Defenders for years with his signature Euro Step instead of stepping through the big man in the paint he’ll often use spin moves to get around them for the finish and if he can’t get all the way to the rim he’ll use floaters and these shots are automatic if France can’t blow by his man he can still score on his Defender with a post up at 610 he often has a high advantage allowing him to finish over them with a hook shot Defenders often have to foul him to stop him so he attempts a lot of foul shots and he’s an excellent free throw shooter at 85% an underrated part of his game is his movement off the ball which creates easy scoring opportunities he punishes Defenders who lose focus of him by cutting hard to the basket he also runs the floor hard in transition allowing him to get open dunks and layups on the fast break along with being a scorer fron is also a terrific playmaker he plays at the three but the magic often have him bringing the ball up and initiating the offense making him more of a point forward we really get to see that awesome Court Vision in transition the magic were great at forcing teams to cough up the rock last year ranking third in opponent’s turnovers per game this allowed Orlando to get out in transition a lot and fron is great at pushing the ball and finding his teammates on The Fast Break in the half court he’s got a great eye for finding the open Shooters he also gets Shooters open with the constant pressure he puts on the rim a lot of his assist comes from driving to the basket which forces Defenders to leave Shooters to provide help and kicking the ball out to his teammates for Great Looks he’s also good at feeding big men sitting at the dunker spot when the help defense has to step up fron can also operate as the pick and roll ball handler and he has great chemistry with the magic centers after the big man sets the screen his Drive forces is the opposing Center the rotate over and France is great at finding the rle man for the finish and he’s an amazing passer in these situations able to Dish it to the rolling big man in tight spaces with pinpoint accuracy the big weakness in his game is the long ball where fron shot just 28% from Deep last season despite the low percentage he’s more than capable as a shooter he definitely wasn’t lacking in confidence shooting over five three pointers a game last season not only can he hit off the catch but he can shoot pullup threes he can even create threes for himself off the bounce with the step back but at the end of the day it’s all about efficiency and he just simply doesn’t hit threes at a high enough percentage his inability to shoot really hurt Orlando in their first round match up against the Cavaliers because he’s not a threat from Deep Orlando’s spacing was terrible in that series against Cleveland the defense could easily sag off of France and take away driving Lanes from other players and they were more than happy to let him shoot knowing the end result would be a brick and one-on-one his lack of an outside game made him a lot easier to guard Evan Mobley had his way defensively against fron in the series game seven was an absolute nightmare where fron scored just six points shot one of 15 from the field and missed all five of his three-pointers they only lost by 12 points so frons had put up his regular averages that could have made the difference between winning and losing now before you click off of the video this isn’t meant to crap on France but to get to that next level he needs to improve his weaknesses and becoming a good shooter is really the key to unlocking that Allstar potential what’s weird is that he used to be a decent three-point shooter he shot 36% from Deep last year and 35% from him deep in his rookie year I’m not sure why he regressed in his third season maybe it’s fatigue after playing in the F World Cup but if he can get back to at least being an average shooter that would make a world of a difference I would also like to see France add a mid-range game he shot just 39% on shots he took from 15 to 19 ft last season if he had a solid mid-range pull-up this would give him a good shot to go to when he can’t get all the way to the rim and it would prevent Defenders from sagging off the best perimeter scorers in the game usually can score from mid-range at a high level I believe France can become a good shooter but it’s all about putting in the work if he stays in the gym and fires hundreds of jumpers every single day I’m sure he can be a great shooter now let’s talk about the other end of the Court fron was a big part of a magic defense that ranked third in the entire League last year he’s extremely tough to score on oneon-one he moves his feet really well allowing him to stay in front of driving players and that Long Reach allows him to contest jump shots really well he’s also got very quick hands on defense so get sloppy with your handle and it’s like taking candy from a baby this is is it to say he won’t get scored on but when players try to ISO against France the end result is usually them giving the ball up or taking a difficult shot that misses badly he also navigates screens incredibly well allowing him to get back in the play fast this often leads to opposing centers getting called for moving screens trying to free their man up usually he’s guarding the other team small forward but he could switch on to fast guards and while most 610 players are getting cooked in the type of matchups fron is locking them up even when fron was matched up against Elite guards like Jaylen Brunson Anthony Edwards and Demar D rozan he more than held his own while guarding them his ability to defend multiple positions and do a damn good job at it makes him one of the most versatile defenders in the league and fron isn’t just a great man-to-man Defender when guarding off the ball he stays active he’s really good at anticipating passes which helps him to rack up steals in the Reflections he covers ground fast allowing him to close out on Shooters really well he could quickly turn an open shot into a heavily contested one or even get the block he also provides a lot of value as a helps side Defender he doesn’t have a high block average but he does a good job of rotating over going straight up and using the rule of verticality to provide resistance near the rim at 610 with a 7t wingspan he’s not easy for driving players to finish over which leads to Misses in the paint the fact fact that fron plays defense at such a high level shows that the sky is the limit because the top superstars in the league aren’t just great offensive players they also have a big impact on the defensive end France is already a great two-way player going into his fourth season expanding his offensive game is going to be the key to him going from really good young player to legit Allstar so that’s going to be the end of this breakdown and I want to hear from you guys what do you think of France Vagner do you think he could be an all star next year what’s his ceiling and do you think he could lead the magic deeper in the playoffs next season let me see your thoughts Down Below in the Will Franz Wagner make the all star team next season?
Historically, most good teams have learned and improved from tough playoff defeats! Orlando can make that leap, but the top two player have to get better! In today’s game, better means more efficient! I think he will make the jump
I’m worried about his jumper, if he doesn’t get a lot better fast then other parts of his offense will suffer
Great video, man. You know ball
yo guys, bet orlando magic to be east champ 2025. its +2k , philadelphia is +350 LMAO. phi gonna get smoked by either injuries or karma. you cant pay kelly oubre and kenyon martin same money cmon
Very nice video great work! “Good chemistry with his Centers” is a funny statement when his brother is one of them. I am from Germany and watched am lot of franz and he is so good but he really needs this efficity. His shooting form is questionable as well, but I really think it’s fixable. I watched him live at Germanys national this week and he is just a nice guy and I really think he could be an allstar this year.
I think Franz ceiling is about Manu level. He has all of the tools, but isn’t crazy flashy, just exactly what he needs to be. A lot of talk about his jumper and it did look strained from 3 pretty often like he was struggling with his form to get it that far so fatigue is possible. This year will be the big determining year I think on what he can do with this team. As a Magic fan, I would LOVE to see him and Paolo all stars together. They’re a duo
Extremely underrated
23PPG 8 APG and 6 RPG next year
World Champ Finals MVP already in his Bag
His draft class are salivating from his achievements
Nah nah nah I can’t agree that Mobley had his way in Franz this Series. That is one BIG FAT LIE just bec he blocked 1 shot at game 5? Watch BBall breakdown Video on how many times Franz COOKED Mobley all series.
Slight correction, Franz was the MVP of the final game of the WC, not the WC MVP, that was dennis schröder. Good vid though
