The Raptors are BATTING 1000 – (Vezenkov/JFL Waived, Koloko return?)
The Toronto Raptors have waived Sasha Vezenkov, and the deal is MIND-BOGGLING given the Raptors were compensated massively for the contractual obligation to Vezenkov. I tweeted on June 29th that Sasha was going back to Europe, that the Raptors knew this, as it was confirmed as an open secret by 2 European sources who would know–but then Michael Grange said something else and I guess we took the wait-and-see-approach.
The Raptors clear Vezenkov’s 6.6 million, not to mention another roster spot by waiving Javon Freeman-Liberty following a somewhat incomplete summer league showing. This means missing out on his bigger guarantee dates, and this allows him to search for another team ahead of training camp.

However, the juicy part of this is that this news follows some VERY encouraging news that Christian Koloko is very near to being cleared by the NBA to resume his career. This was always the plan for the Raptors who adore Koloko, and hopefully good news will follow. This also clears the deck for Toronto to take back more salary in upcoming trades given their room before hitting the luxury tax line.
All in all, the Raptors have absolutely WON this offseason in my books. This would just be the cherry on top.
