This morning (which is afternoon in Paris), KD got into some arguments with fans who are arguing for more FIBA rules in the NBA. KD argues these fans don’t really know what they’re talking about. Here is the full argument, for those that don’t have Twitter:
Twitter user: Please @NBA adopt more @FIBA rules and let us see the best really think the game and play the game like it's meant to be played
KD: I swear yall just be yappin. What rules u wanna see man?
Twitter user: I want to see the 3 seconds back and that's it…. you disagree? More movement less ISO / Quicker Decisions – keep 3s the same as NBA – Can't knock off the rim (that's dumb)
KD: If u want to eliminate defensive 3 seconds then the games will be slower.
Twitter user: I don't disagree with that (i'm 40 so i'm late 90s basketball lo) … but more schemes & quicker decisions offensively not as much holding
NBA is fine man lol it's the best product in the world with the best players PERIOD – would love to see it … i'm watching yall do it nowKD: The beauty of basketball is not callin all them sets but playing off instincts and lettin the talent dictate the game..gettin out in transition, driving and kicking, playing random basketball. U want a trick play every possession like it’s football. That’s not why our game is beautiful
Twitter user: That works when your team is stacked 1-5. It does ‘t work when you need to get the best out of every player on the floor in different aspects (screens, passes, cuts) when your team has guys all playing roles, you need play calling.
KD: Random basketball!! U not comprehending what I’m saying. U can RANDOMLY set a screen, RANDOMLY back cut, RANDOMLY make a pass to the open man. Focus on what I’m saying
So do you guys agree with KD that FIBA rules wouldn’t make NBA basketball “more beautiful”?

You realistically can’t have all of the FIBA rules for a NBA season.
I just want to see them test the goaltending rules in the G League or in preseason because I think they’d be fun
Fans think they know more than an nba legend lmao the internet has turned everybody into a professional
NBA would suck if it had FIBA rules for 82 games. You thought the NBA was a 3 point chuck show now? Imagine Rudy Gobert or Wemby not having to leave the paint.
oh my god Budenholzer has already taken over KD like the symbiote
no 3 seconds would be interesting tbh but I just feel like the wolves and Spurs would be broken if that came about
I think he means improvised
Love KD
Mans do got a point in if the game was OFFICIATED like FIBA
I always dig KD talking ball, always hoped he’d become a sports pundit afterwards. He’s just interesting to listen to talk about basketball, even on a goofy platform like twitter.
Like in this case he’s talking about the sort of chaotic nature of the sport in the NBA, he likes the impromptu style where you’re not calling a set play every time up and often kinda just letting momentum and reading the defense live dictate what you do.
Obviously that’s fairly controversial, many people like a more structured, “team-oriented” game, but it’s so understandable coming from KD who is so adept at taking the ball up and just killing his defender on a whim. Not that international rules seem to be a large impediment to him, but he may feel like the more restricted form hurts the poetry of the game, I guess.
the reason FIBA is a better watch is less timeouts, your brain is not bombarded constantly by NO FLEX, ZONE and the product just seems cleaner. the twitter user lost an opportunity to throw actual good argumets rather than defensive 3 seconds and “sharing the ball”
This is why the game has gone postionless. Because the game is random, you have to play multiple positions to be ready for for it
Mom: “Timmy have you done your homework?”
Timmy: “No, mom. I’m arguing with KD on Twitter”.
Olympics is good scenario where it gets proved why NBA style of play is superior to European style. The Euro guys shit their pants when their plays get broken by defensive schemes. But NBA guys can play using plays or score based on random movements and ISO. Like KD doesn’t need the team to set a play to score. All he needs is ball and some spacing and he will score. Meanwhile the Euro guys were struggling to take shots whenever their plays weren’t going well.
KD is absolutely right, people claim they wanna see FIBA ball every time we’re in Olympic/FIBA comp season but they’d be complaining if that were the way games were played throughout the season. NBA ball is the better watch with more capacity to bring in casual fans.
Eliminating defensive three seconds would actually restrict player movement. The opposite of what the fan said.
Part of the fun of Olympic ball is just how great these guys are that they can adjust to any setting and dominate.
KD must be the realest guy in the NBA.
KD: Bud was right all along, the beauty of basketball is playing random
3 second rule was a bad example. But I like the reffing and the goal tending is interesting. Bring back the big guys.
40 minute games are just easier to digest.
Only changes I want from FIBA are less TV timeouts and less rewarding of foul baiting
KD sounds like Steve Kerr here. Suck it, Kerr haters.
I simply want the FIBA physicality in the NBA. Let these guys play and its so much more entertaining when the whistle isn’t being blown every :30 for a weak body contact foul.
If a offensive player initiates contact into a defender, it should not be a foul on the defender. This is something FIBA largely gets right, especially compared to the NBA.
The only rule that i want them to bring is the legally tipping of ball outside if it’s bouncing around the rim
i just want less fouls. for example, embiid swinging into somebody for a “shot” and not getting the call.
The beauty of KD is how willing he is to engage in social media lol, dude’s at some fancy restaurant for dinner locked in on his phone because he can’t help himself from replying.
They say the best plug n’ play player of all time for a reason. He excels in random basketball lol ofc he likes the type of basketball where he excels the most lol
the goaltending rim rule would be hilarious in the NBA. i wanna see the small dudes swat those misses out of there
They should reduce the timeouts available to each team like fiba does, but the tv networks would never go for that
I do think the FIBA goaltending rule should be used just to eliminate those bang-bang calls, but that’s the only one I can really think of.
Kobe called it “accidental basketball” and actually talked about his dislike for it.
Imagine a random ass fan telling one of the best NBA players of his generation that he needs to “play the game like it’s meant to be played”
This is why I have zero issues when players lash out and fight back against some of the arrogance and ignorance perpetrated by certain fans
I play the same way in 2K. KD Is just like me.
Idk i’ll believe the dude who actually dribbles a basketball and has years of experience on both courts than some random couch potato on Twitter
> Twitter user: I don’t disagree with that (i’m 40 so i’m late 90s basketball lo) … but more schemes & quicker decisions offensively not as much holding NBA is fine man lol it’s the best product in the world with the best players PERIOD – would love to see it … i’m watching yall do it now
A 40 year old does not type like this.
I just want the game officiated like FIBA and do away with superstar calls altogether. “He hasn’t earned that call” should never be a sentence that fans just accept.
KD averages like 10-15 fights with fans on Twitter every day
Of course he did. He wouldn’t be Kevin Durant if he didn’t argue with nobodies instead of enjoying his endless fortune and celebrity
Can tell this dude talkin to KD probably posts on Reddit 😂
Big time basketball reference spread sheet dork energy
The actual rules aren’t an issue in the NBA, it’s the refs/money.
League does better financially when star players and teams post highlights and win. Refs are incentivized to lend every advantage possible to these stars and disadvantage any team that plays against them. This means a shit ton of foul calls and stoppage of play. FIBA has less of this bias so the games naturally feel better to watch.
Would be easier to take seriously if it looked like the Suns were anywhere near maximizing their offensive talent last year when playing RANDOM.
Also, FIBA removal of offensive goaltending / basket inference is actually the best thing about it.
I like how shooting fouls are called in fiba, might be biased tho cause it made embiid look borderline fraudulent
The biggest thing I want from FIBA is **every player is reffed equally no matter what**
It’s fucking brutal watching your team lose to foul merchants
I wish KD told me to fuck off. 😔
Dude you’re in gorgeous Paris with a bunch of cool teammates and u still can’t log off?????
