[NBACentral] Julius Randle becomes eligible to sign a contract extension on Saturday, which could be worth up to $181.5 million over a maximum of four years
Yes, yes and yes again. Came to NY on his own, took us to the playoffs for the first time in almost a decade. 2x All NBA(could’ve been 3 barring injury), 3x All Star. Outside of 2 freak injuries he’s durable. Extend him
icebucket22
I really hope we don’t do this. This man needs to prove he can play in the playoffs. He is a legit wild card, as many bad years as good years and no good playoff runs yet. We fucked up by resigning him too early the last time, I hope we play it right this time.
ReturnOfAKidNamedTae
Honestly have no interest in paying Julius 45M a year but I’m sure the FO will offer him the max extension.
I wouldn’t be upset but I’d rather not.

No question!!! Even if there are long term concerns or doubts if Randle will be with the team 2-3 years from now I think it makes sense to offer him the extension.
Emiya_Sengo
With the fit concerns, I’m hoping he takes a paycut and comes back for $35-40M. Otherwise he can take the full max but he might not be here when all is said and done.

Imagine what we’d have to pay him if he wasn’t handicapped playing with RJ for years
TernoftheArctic
I don’t hate it if we do. I’d rather we either wait a month into the season to see how it meshes or see if we can get him for a bit less. 45 a year is crazy would love if we could get mid 30s
Green__Bananas
We should wait to see how this year goes.
If he buys in to team ball, defensive effort, sharing the ball, smart shots, and NO MOPING, then I’d be down to extend him.
BadassRPMofo
He will get the extension, it’s a matter of whether he gets the max or takes a little less. I’m curious to see where it ends up.

If Randle decides to opt out next year, he’ll be a UFA and eligible for a 5 yr. $313 mil contract.
Fred Katz posted a very [insightful article](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5672708/2024/08/01/knicks-julius-randle-contract-negotiations/) this morning (click “show reader” to bypass paywall) discussing all of this. Of note, Katz mentions a potential option that would involve Randle opting in to his $30.9 mil player option next year and signing a *smaller* 3 year extension off of that $30 mil number with a starting salary of $43.3 mil in ‘26-‘27 to save the Knicks even more money.
A lot of moving parts, but in my opinion…I find it hard to believe Randle will play out this year w/o a new contract just to sign shorter deal for less value later on. If Randle signs the $181 mil extension now, he’s already leaving roughly $130 mil in potential money on the table (which is a crazy discount in itself). Not to mention, Randle already took a paycut when he signed the $117 mil extension back in 2021.
We’ll have to see how it all plays out, but I think it would be best for both sides for the Knicks to lock up Randle now for $181 mil.

I’m fairly confident Randle will age well. Guys his size seem to normally still be playing at a high level in their mid 30s

People don’t realize how important he is to this team. Keep our king

From what I’ve heard it sounds like he’s probably not signing an extension anytime soon. Knicks probably want to see what the team looks like before they commit real money to him. Unless he’s immediately willing to take a hefty discount – like under $30m a year – I think they wait.
Take_My_User_Name
I’m good with him taking this, not the 5 / 300 million plus if he waits until next offseason.
He’s already on the wrong side of 30 and has 2 serious injuries that will probably start to become an issue the older he gets.
I appreciate him being the only one to wanted to be here when nobody else did, but that offseason extension would be a killer.

If he takes the pay cut, and he performs like he did last season…I never want to hear any crazy talk about Jules again.

I love Randle, and I’m one of his biggest supporters on this sub (imo). I feel it’s extremely important that we extend him, however, after running the numbers 🤓 I don’t see how we can give him $40M a year and stay below the second apron. If we can give him that max and stay below the second apron, then please give it to him.
But I think it’s important we see how this year plays out before maxing him and committing ourselves to the second apron. Good chance we finish this season saying, “yeah this was great but we need a better backup center (or healthy starting center)”. If we commit ourselves to the second apron we won’t really have a way of doing that.

As great as Julius Randle is I honestly wouldn’t pay him more than 30 million a season.

The Knicks need to extend him. Even if you dont love Randle (and I dont), its not like him leaving will give us 30+ million to spend on someone else and we are better off with him on the team for the next few years.

Offer it and sign him tf. Easiest decision ever

This is literally the best time to resign him. We caught a glimpse in January of what a powerhouse the Knicks were. 181 over 4 is a steal on an ALL NBA PLAYER.
This is the cheapest his value will be coming off an injury They need to get this done before the season so long as we stay below the second apron.

No reason not to see how he looks on the current roster before extending him, right? I fully expect he’ll earn 45 million a year. But why not see how they all fit together before inking it?
Extra_Cress_5855
its a matter of wanting him at all. as opposed to the right number. if the sentiment is yes then he automatically has the leverage to get the full max.
York_Villain
That would be a huge win for the Knicks
