Since 2004-05, 20 teams have finished in the bottom 5 in consecutive seasons. How many have had success? Is there a difference between teams that have tanked successfully and those that have not tanked successfully.
David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA insider takes a look at the 20 years of tank and tries to figure out what are the most successful tanks and which ones came up empty.
There is a noticeable difference is someone has something in the cupboard compared to the cupboard being completely empty.

It’s very simple the Jazz have one way to build a contender through the draft. It’s either tank and try to build a contender through the draft or forever stay mediocre.

I think we keep Lauri and develop are young players I know the whole country hates Utah but if we tank for cooper flag doesn’t always mean will get the number one pick the jazz never had it
I understand you have to set a criteria for a tank but when your criteria doesn't include the Spurs for Victor Wembanyama, I can't say this a conclusive study.
He keeps forgetting that the thunder also made the finals.
A couple of things here. When looking at the success of tanking you need to take into consideration injuries. Injuries can happen to any team and it can derail the team. The bulls were headed in the right direction with Rose and were derailed by injuries. Also, there are multiple ways to build a team but you have to get "the guy". At least by tanking it seems like the team is working in a direction. Making a trade and hoping that the new guy turns into Gilchrist-Alexander is just luck. Question: are you more likely to hit on "the guy" by tanking and getting a top 4 pick or finding the diamond that nobody else in the NBA sees yet? I would prefer to keep Lauri unless we can get the price that Danny wants. I would however trade Clarkson and possibly Sexton to get the young guys as much playing time as possible and tank. What the Jazz have done the last couple of years, be just bad enough to get mediocre picks, will guarantee that the rebuild never ends.

The one thing we absolutely can not do is convey our pick to OKC this year or next year. That would mean a bottom 10 team this year and a bottom 8 team next year.
After that pick situation is sorted out, the Jazz can do whatever they please.

The only time the Jazz have become a contending team was because they were able to obtain franchise changing players through the draft. Karl Malone, John Stockton, Deron Williams, Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell. If there was a year to tank, it is this year. Get that other franchise changing player next draft to go with Lauri. Trading Lauri is not smart if the Jazz can get that other piece next draft. One star alone cannot get a team to the finals, but two stars with a great supporting cast of players can.
Jazz NEED a top 5 player to be a contender. I believe jazz can’t make big decisions until they get their guy. Getting their guy needs to be the first step, putting yourself in the best position to get their guy needs to be the direction the jazz should be going in. Otherwise jazz are just going in circles. You can talk about weather a tank works or not but at the end of the day numbers and statistics say you must have a top 5 player or future top 5 player to contend. What road is the best road to get their guy?

No no no. Not enough controlled variables. How GOOD IS MANAGEMET AND didn’t make stupid trades or picks? And excluding Lebron James for Cleveland is WILD. The reality is how many teams have a top 5 player in the league and how did they obtain them?? If you tanked and got all NBA/HOF player you’re in business. That’s the only formula that works. Now some teams didn’t tank and got lucky at pick 12 etc. HOWEVER some teams weren’t tanking but took the PICKS of TANKING TEAMS. How else do the Jazz get a franchise player? And we all know signing a massive FA is not a possibility

I think if they really bottom out for this one year, since the next draft is really good.
Then you have kind of semi tanked and traded assets for 2 years + 1 year full tank.
Even if you dont get Flagg its high potential to get good players.
After that they should try to play to build team chemistry and train the players. Ainge has this track record with Celtics already.
Yeah try to keep Lauri, train others. Maybe do some more trades with some of the rookies.
I just think that you tank at the end of the day to get a top 10ish player and the jazz have really screwed up looking back. In an alternate world where they keep Donavan Mitchell, they would have a player to build around. Why did they trade him when Cleveland of all teams is willing to pay him 300+ million in his next contract? They could have Mitchell, Gobert and Conley and then probably traded for Mark cheap and they would have a perennial playoff team. It mostly just comes down to the dumb decisions management makes. Those Cleveland and Minnesota picks honestly aren’t looking so hot now.

The question I have been wanting to know for years is how come Jordan Clarkson was not traded? He should have been traded even before Don and we are stick to him because Ryan likes him orsomething?

I dunno why people want to trade lauri. He's been other teams number 1 game plan against and all he's done is be an allstar and followed that season up with similar numbers but with an uptick in efficiency all while shooting higher volume on 3s. We can tank with him but even if we do no guarantee we'll end up w a top 3 pick unless we only win 15 games.. that said there are no guarantees that any of these lotto kids are going to be better than lauri. All we need is a kid that can be a ball in hand high level scorer to play next to lauri. Then in 2026 find a lead pg with size.
