If he were still at 10 along with George in 2010, would we have still picked George?

I’m pretty sure I remember them saying they had PG over Hayward

Will never forget those two runs they had at Butler.

Always wanted to see him on the Pacers. Sad it didn’t happen, but happy to have followed his entire career from high school. Good for him

Yeah probably. George was the better pick despite the hate that would’ve entailed. However if that shot falls he’d be an all timer in Indiana. To get over on Duke would’ve meant a statue in Indy proper.

The backlash to that would have rivaled picking Reggie Miller over Steve Alford. And it would have aged worse because Hayward had a much better career than Alford, although George was clearly the correct pick.

When is the last time we drafted a local player who was still on the board? Damon Bailey maybe? We passed on OG when he was available. Back in the 80s the Pacers would draft a ton of local guys from Evansville, Ball State, Purdue, Indiana, Butler when the draft was like 10 rounds. I remember buying those Peterson NBA sports guides each summer to see all the players the Pacers and other teams drafted along with season predictions.

Pacers taking a white local boy, 100 times out of 100.
