FC Barcelona has just announced the loan of James Nnaji to Bàsquet Girona for the 2024/25 season. He was selected 31st overall in the 2023 NBA draft (traded to the Charlotte Hornets).

After a year of almost no participation in Barcelona, Nnaji is sent on loan to Girona, team owned by Marc Gasol. Last season they finished in 14th place out of 18, and thus will not play any European competitions.

If James is unable to become one of the best centers in the league I would guess he will never come overseas to Charlotte, but I'm hopeful that this loan will help him develop his game.

Can anyone help me understand this? We drafted a guy 31st, sent him overseas to develop, he got 0 playtime, and now he’s doing another year overseas?

I’m so confused. First off, why didn’t we just send him to the Swarm to develop? 2nd, why would we send him overseas if he wasn’t going to play? Why are we doing a 2nd year overseas for a decently high draft pick? This is just so confusing
