[Lewenberg] The Raptors will retire Vince Carter’s No. 15 when they host Sacramento on Nov. 2, sources tell TSN. Nearly 26 years after scoring the first ever basket at Scotiabank Arena, VC will be the first player in the franchise’s 30-year history to have his jersey go into the rafters.

Everything with the rebrand was leading to this, it was inevitable.
I really thought Lowry should be the first Raptor get his jersey retired but whatever, not a big deal.
Congrats to Vince! I didn’t really care which way it went with Vince as to whether we retired his jersey or not, but I imagine this will be a hotly discussed topic lol.
Also before anyone wonders, the recent Rogers thing almost certainly has nothing to do with this. This was definitely planned well in advance, especially with our city jersey literally being a Raptor in a Vince jersey doing an iconic Vince dunk.
Also fun to note this will happen in front of another Raptor who will be getting his jersey retired eventually in DeMar lol
As much as I was hoping it wouldn’t happen, it was obviously going to be done for marketing. Whatever.
Eww
Ugh, ew, why stoop so low?
Rogers starting their new run on a cheap note.
Booooooo!
I hope the crowd booos him on jersey retirement night. Fuck this.
Absolutely pathetic.
The man is a bum and we’re rewarding him. Awful start by Rodgers.
Embarrassing
This is so ass
Yeah yeah go get that marketing money MLSE
Man fuck this retirement
Very appropriate that he’s already planning to go to the nets once again.
Fuck this
Disappointing. Expected but disappointed.
Bull shit. Weak ass MLSE
Not into this.
We forgave him and everyone found peace.
Years later to glorify the relationship when it was really ugly and hurt the team for years. This ain’t it.
They should put his Nets jersey in the rafters. That’s the team he wanted to play for.
Despite what happened, I’ll always appreciate what VC did for basketball in canada. Congrats.
I don’t like this. I remember….
Embarrassing. Welp. I’m out.
This guy said “I just feel like I handled everything the correct way” about his exit from Toronto, just a few months ago. I understand his impact, and I understand if they retired it *eventually*… but I hate that he’s the first number to be retired. I don’t believe he deserves that.
Honestly a ginormous L that we are retiring the jersey of a dude who acted like a pussy on his way out, bitched and moaned, faked injuries, diva bullshit with his mom of all people, before we retire the two players who are the actual Toronto legends.
Vc is one of my favourite players ever to watch but I’m not cool with his bullshit being handwaved away. Retire Amir’s jersey before this dude.
Despite how many still hate VC, he put Toronto on the basketball map. You can’t deny that people. Stoudemire was a fantastic PG for us but he wasn’t going to elevate Toronto on that level. So this is a well deserved jersey retirement.
I know it’s controversial to some, but it is deserved. He put basketball on the map in Canada. Hurt us too, but can’t deny what he helped with.
Remember when Carter fucked over the franchise? Good times.
I know its the 30 year anniversary but still feels like an odd time to retire it. If they did it when he first retired from the nba it would have been better now with lowry getting older seems like we could have waited for Kyle first. Regardless its not the end if the world
I get why some people would say Kyle should be first but VC literally started everything, my middle school went from Leafs fans to Raptors fans overnight because of him.
Well now the debate is over. What’s the next thing we can fickle over?
Conflicting feelings about this.
Vince was a star and helped build the brand in Toronto, but fans seemed to love him more than he ever loved the city.
Would have been more of a feel good if he put in some post career work to sign a retirement 1 day contract and work with the franchise in a more public way
Has there ever been a case in North American sports history where a player has heard a smattering of boos during their jersey retirement ceremony?
I got nothing against Vince anymore but this doesn’t feel right.
Terrible decision.
Lowry should have been the first, and Demar the second.
The one playoff series and the 48 win season he led us to doesn’t qualify him to get his jersey retired, especially with the way he left.
It was an honor he didn’t deserve, and I’m disappointed in the franchise for setting such low standards and honoring a guy who disrespected himself and the fanbase so much on his way out the door.
Also, how do you go and toss out Pascal Siakam like yesterday’s garbage, refusing to pay a loyal soldier who wanted to be here and won us a title, and them retire the jersey of the guy who won one playoff series here, then pulled stunts like yelling out our set play to the Sonics in a close game in order to force us to ship him out of town?
This is going to sound cynical but I really only think they did this to sell jerseys and distract from the lack of winning as of late lol.
I don’t know.
I thought it should have been Kyle and DeMar together.
I’ve been over it. He brought much much more than what he left away as. To me management was never at par in receiving the same hate Vince received and they were far far worse in my opinion. So I am happy Vince is coming home.
For us older fans, Vince screwed us but he brought eyes and attention to or organization. Look at Charlotte.
They have not had a single player to have an impact on the league like Vince. We are still upset but our Franchise has evolved and having Vince with Lowry and Derozan will be good for the our Franchise.
Vince brought popularity.
Derozan brought Stability.
Lowry brought the Championship.
I still have my VC jersey in my closet but damn it should have been Lowry to have his jersey retired first. This is disappointing, and I knew this was going to happen.
I have honestly been disappointed with this franchise as of late, and now with the Rogers buyout and this, it’s only going to keep getting worse.
Masai will likely end up leaving (or Ed will force him out).
I’m starting to worry for the future of our team.
edit: First Linkin Park having a controversial comeback shrouded in controversy, then this, man this 2024 year has not been looking too good – and it always comes down to one thing, the money.
Figured this was coming, Canadian basketball isn’t what it is without him, but retiring his jersey before Kyle & DeMar is just weird. He quit on the team and management was dreadful. Both sides were in the wrong.
f you weren’t alive during his tenure here, your opinion on his jersey retirement is invalid.
Toronto is so forgiving. Maybe it’s because many weren’t there during that time but Vince literally put the franchise back 4-5 years with his b.s. I don’t think I would want to retire a player who hurt the franchise like that and the fans. Great player but still not over how he turned his back on this city and franchise. Won’t change my mind about that…documentary or not.
Boooooooo
Worst decision in franchise history.
Lol this front office is a joke.
Go ahead, sell those commemorative jerseys, make that money off the suckers. Anything to distract from the current day on court product.
Absolutely crazy he got his jersey retired.
