The San Antonio City Council received their first public briefing about the Sports & Entertainment District the city code-named “Project Marvel,” which has been hidden behind a veil of non-disclosure agreements up until now.

A price tag for any part of Project Marvel, including the new Spurs arena, remained elusive during Thursday’s meeting.

Assistant City Manager Lori Houston said during a private media briefing on Wednesday that an email the San Antonio Express-News first obtained through a public records request in which she wrote that Project Marvel would have a price tag between $3 billion and $4 billion was a general figure, and that the actual price could be above or below that range.

But she did make one major commitment to San Antonio residents regarding the potential new Spurs arena: “The arena will not be funded by the general taxpayers.”

  1. Trash the Alamodome upgrade/idea. It's outdated and never attracted anything when it was initially built.

  2. This sounds like San Antonio put in place a committee similar to what you suggested Oakland should do in a video earlier this week. They now have a foundation to work from.

  3. Isn’t too much at all. Good for cities that have vision. Too bad Oakland didn’t have this kind of vision.

  4. From the picture it looks like a child made those plans. Its basically spend billions for something ugly. Get examples from other stadiums…😢

  5. Current Spurs is on rodeo/fair grounds.
Dome is used a lot by convention center. It ha worked and been better for city . I think it would not have been successful it it had a"major" tennant

  6. San Antonio is also building a new AAA Baseball stadium. Alamodome remodel will help with recruiting for UTSA football, keep final four, hopefully have NBA all-star game, help Brahmas have a better stadium.

  7. Prioritize the Spurs and convention center. Hotel can come later and the Alamodome shouldn’t be considered solely on UTSA.

  8. I would love for the new spurs to be downtown. Where they plan to put it you have the Tower of Americas, the convention center, part of the river walk, River Center Mall and the Alamo all within a 10 -15 minute walking distance. If the Spurs ever win another championship they whole area will go crazy

  9. I work in San Antonio and live north of the city. SATX sorely needs an upgrade. Theres massive highway construction going on on I35 and 1604. SATX has fallen behind Dallas, Houston and Austin on attracting company, events and money

  10. The Alamo dome housed the San Antonio Spurs for over 10 yrs so it did have a major league team using it.

  11. Who's "brilliant" idea was this?
    Unless the local leadership has their city "in order", they can do whatever;
    But I truly doubt it.

  12. So basically, a new arena for the Spurs, and a land bridge? Because there is NO reason to "reimagine" the Alamodome with a hole in it. Now, if that "reimagining" involves just a remodel, with maybe a new style transparent roof, ala SoFi stadium, then, maybe? However, there is NO reason to effectively punch a hole in the roof of that stadium.

  13. San Antonio ❤is great City great sport's city best ❤️ fan's ever… Rays to San Antonio? San Antonio is a great city

  14. Alamodome is also home to the TX high school basketball state championships. IT IS TERRIBLY set up, but they’re the host nonetheless.

  15. San Antonio needs to take the gamble and go BIG with this. Our Airport is also undergoing a $1.2 Billion expansion.
    .
As a life long SA resident we are being left behind by Austin, Dallas, and Houston.
    .
If we ever hope on being a competitive city to attract business and opportunity then we have to make this investment

  16. The Tampa Bay Rays should reach out to SA, we are currently building a new AAA stadium for the Missions. If the Rays got involved we could upgrade the plan towards an MLB ballpark instead.

  18. I like this project. As someone commented, it’s like your recent video about a visioning/steering group for Oakland to try to get baseball to return.

I completely understand that some people might not like a project this huge and ongoing. However, San Antonio is a major city, only having the Spurs in the Big Four leagues doesn’t reflect its importance.

    From the 2023 Census estimates:
    2nd largest city in Texas
7th largest city in the US
17th largest city in North America
24th largest urban area in the US
24th largest metropolitan area in the US
31st largest media market in the US
The oldest municipality in Texas, over 300 years old

It’s a very important world city, but a lot of people STILL think it’s a sleepy Texas hamlet that hosted a World’s Fair, HemisFair 68, and got a team when an ABA squad relocated.

    It’s a very smart plan
    -Bring the Spurs back downtown
-The courthouse was built as a theater for the World’s Fair in 68 and converted to a Federal courthouse in the 70s and recently replaced, thereby restoring it to its original general entertainment concept
-connect the Dome to the tourism district
-‘improve’ the Dome to attract another team (one of the outdoor ‘larger crowd’ leagues)
-improve the capacity of the area to bring in conventions and events that are missed out on currently

As a non-Texas resident, I think these are all good project ideas, both as a sports fan and a fan of big ideas that can bring more money into an area (conventions, concerts, conferences, events).

I applaud their large-scale and out of the box thinking. Imagine, returning a courthouse back to an event venue—usually if it’s not a historical building, old courthouses often get torn down. But here, they are recycling it! Reminds me of a cool re-use of Houston’s Astrodome recently announced that I believe Brodie commented on.

I am sure the hardest part will be the Alamodome—cooking up a plan the public will support, financing it, building it, and finally attracting a team. It’s the one least likely to get accomplished, but probably the most ambitious.

Once again, Brodie, you have brought up an interesting news topic that shows how forward thinking you are. Someone really needs to snatch you up, you are increasingly a visionary guy (just so long as they don’t take away your excellent YouTube work!)!

  19. You say North America had to get better at building long term lasting stadiums/arenas. I think this is a false premise. We have MANY long lasting arenas/stadiums in this continent. And they take maintenance sure but don’t need to be rebuilt. But the pro sports leagues, teams, and owners have built a culture of holding fans and communities hostage to a constant WANT (not need) for new stadiums. They could use stadiums longer or self fund new ones but they don’t. Instead they just say if we don’t get new we will leave, even when the stadium would still be feasible long term.

  20. SA resident here:
The FBC by itself is not a bad arena, but the surrounding area is horrible. Also getting to and from is a nightmare.
    Big fan of project marvel
