NBA Cup Reaction: Thunder STIFLE Mavericks, Bucks survive Magic, SGA & Giannis shine | Hoops Tonight

Jason Timpf shares his reaction to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 39-point explosion in the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 118-104 win over Luka Doncic’s Dallas Mavericks. Jason discusses how OKC stifled Luka, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, and the Dallas offense. Later, Jason reacts to Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks’ 114-109 win over the Orlando Magic, including late-game heroics from Damian Lillard. The show ends with Jason heading to the film room to break down OKC’s win over Dallas in a potential Western Conference Finals preview.

  1. The Mavs fans blaming PJ's absence is hilarious considering the thunder are missing their 2nd best player in Chet.

  2. I get the Mavs made a long run last season, but their definitely not the second best team in the West. Did you see their defense in the last few minutes??? OKC got whatever they wanted.

  3. Mailbag:Despite Chet being out for a considerable amount of time,The OKC thunder have still been comfortably the best defensive team in the league. With this being said do you think Chet’s impact defensively isn’t as big as we thought?

  4. I know luka gets criticized for his lack of defense and complaining but I always brush it off by thinking he’s young, he’ll mature but now he is 25; now I really believe he should be in his prime but I still see it on the floor the lack of energy, conditioning, diet and he has gotten a tad bit better but still does it a lot. I feel it affects the team hugely. A lot of people brush it off because he made the finals and believe in him still. But I’m not one of those who is content with getting to the finals. I believe he has to be fit enough to compete 48 mins a game and put effort in most plays to win. With dirk and others mentoring him I’m wondering when or if he’ll do this. Also I think he needs to drive to basket more like in the game with okc when he didn’t have anything going and Boston in the finals. He doesn’t have to be the best on defense but I think effort will show the team he is 100% committed most nights and then he’ll be the best player in the world with hopefully a championship under his belt. Thanks love the show.

  5. Mailbag, Hey Jason can you explain in your opinion and basketball reasons why 1 the rockets aren’t using Reed Sheppard as much, 2 why draft him at all when you paid Fred Vanevleet. Thanks and keep up the good work

  6. Whats up Jason; big big fan of the show. I've been seeing a few people on the internet talk about a potential Jimmy Butler trade to Denver for Michael Porter Jr and a pick. What do you think the basketball reasoning is behind that potential trade and how do you think Jimmy Butler would fit in with Denver? Also maybe it would dope if you had a series where you broke down the basketball reasoning behind potential trades that could possibly happen? Love your content bro; hope you stay blessed!!!

  7. I love when the Bucks are down big players "they just aren't good" and when other teams are down big players it matters. Laughable

  8. 1 game does not determine anything. This is the first time luka saw the thunder. Think it will look a lot different next time they match up with luka and the mavs knowing how they're going to play him all game

  9. i think houston has a deeper, more balanced team than dallas. but they can't shoot the ball so that will limit them. once they get a consistent shooter or two (or their guys magically get better), that will be the best team in the west.

  10. Mailbag: the Key to Mavs beating OKC in my opinion is continue the passing as soon as Luka and Kyrie are blitzed but have Luka and Kyrie move around similar to Steph off ball, find the weak defender probably SGA on the switches and then get open looks. They don’t need to run around like Steph and be worn out but it’s another offensive style pivotal in my opinion in order for Mavs to beat OKC since they’re defensively insane.

  11. I hope they ditch the coach camera and mic. It was just unnecessary and annoying

  12. What is the deal with the media (I.e. YOU) is but why is Dallas making mistakes and OKC is not just a great team. It’s not just you, but the small market disregard and disrespect is unreal. Again, not just you but WTF. Why is this OKC team not being given the love they deserve?

  13. Man when Jason is ignoring the Lakers hes truly the best in the business nobobdy breaks down the game like he is.

  14. Calling Cason and Aaron Wiggins mediocre shooters is a bit hilarious to me. Idk what Awiggs 3pt% has been since the start of last season, but it must be high 30s low 40s. Cason shot above 40% last season. They shot below their standard last postseason vs the mavs and that’s one of the main reasons we lost that series. Same goes for Chet. If the mavs gameplan is to let those guys shoot, it isn’t going to end well for them more often than not. Okc is very very capable of being a good 3pt shooting team

  15. Hello Jason, in your opinion do you think the Knicks have the personal on defense to go to zone so they can cover up Brunson and Towns defensive limitations or does more switching become the solution for their defense if they want to contend?

  17. when okc lost agains dallas – "dallas is just the better team and completely outplayed the okc"
when dallas lost against okc – "dallas is still winning the halfcourt battle blah blah blah"

    yeah right

  18. If the Mavs would’ve won this game, everyone would’ve jump on the bang wagons and talk about them competing with Boston as the best team. For OKC, its was just another Tuesday, literally. All in a days work.

  19. Big Mailbag Question:

Yo Jason, love the show it's probably my favorite basketball show currently. I have yet another Jokić topic. So the discourse lately has been that Jokics output has been so high because his teammates (namely Jamal) are just bad lately and so he has to do everything. Reasonable, no doubt. But I have been considering the opposite, which is maybe his teammates are being affected by, not his usage, but the fact that he dictates everything. What I mean to say is I was perusing time of possession stats, not usage, and I noticed something. The Nuggets have had 3 real playoff runs together (20, 23, 24) they were competitive in 2 of them, 20 and 23. In those playoffs specifically Jokics average touches per game were 103 and Murray's were 90. In the 2023 playoffs Jokic was at 111 and Murray was at 90. Last years playoffs and this regular season so far the split is closer to 115/70 respectfully. So, I say all that to ask you this, do you think there's any possible validity to the assertion that maybe Jokic getting 115 touches per game, and although the stats are insane the onus is all on him, and Murray their point guard only getting 70, not to mention MPJ and others being relegated to spot up/stand around guys again, do you think that Jokics play to play dominance is contributing to his teammates being out of rhythm, poor play whatever and just the teams overall issues in general? Obviously he needs to touch the ball a lot regardless but my main question is has it gone too far is the discrepancy between him and especially Murray too wide and also why do you think it is? Do you think it's just because the team sucks so he's just doing everything or do you think maybe Murray needs to be forced back into the same role he played in 20 and 23, same for MPJ and AG? Would love to hear your thoughts, keep workin!

  20. Did Jason say the game plans of both teams dictated that SGA would easily more than double Luka & Kyries output? If Jason Kidds gameplan was "Let's have Shai score 39pts easily" than Dallas needs a new coach.

  21. Mavericks got schooled by the Thunder. Not sure they will learn anything. Despite Jason's wishful thinking Mavericks will be lucky to finish fourth after Houston and Memphis. By next year the Spurs will surpass Dallas. Luka will never win MVP. Anything else you want to know?

  22. Okc showed the Mavs who the best team is in the west okc
Wait til we get Chet back

  23. Mailbag question:

Listening to the breakdown of how the Mavs' stars may simply need to attack their matchups, if the Thunder are looking to blitz, wouldn't they succeed if they played two man game between Kyrie and Luka? If Dort and Wallace blitz, you get a weaker match up on either Luka or Kyrie if they windshield switch, or on a defensive breakdown, now one of your stars has a ball.

I guess it would simply depend on Luka's and Kyrie's ability to set a decent enough screen to force their defenders to work.

  24. Who on our team are mediocre shooters?? I've seen your videos before and it seems like you know your stuff when it comes to X's and O's but it seems like you don't know much about the Thunder roster.

  25. Yea Chets an all star and PJ is a below average role player that somehow figures out how to shoot only against the Thunder lol 😂😂

  26. Ahh man. 5 mins in and you've said the Mavs' gameplan was to allow Shai to score. Bro…I'll stop here.

  27. Mailbag question:

I’d love to see the NBA change the three point line to the same size as FIBA. It’s shorter yes, making the shot itself easier, but the decrease in spacing would “speed up” the evolution you’re talking about.
Do you think this change would be for the better?

    Thanks! You da man 🙌🏻

  28. Aye Mavs Fans Lets Really Break This Down So Yall Can Understand Why Us OKC Fans Aint Tryna Hear Yall Pj Argument .. 1- We Didn’t Have Chet (A Better Player On Both Ends) 2- Luka Had 2 Points At The Half, 17 For The Game On Bad Percentages Kyrie Had 15 On 7/14 I’d Say That Ain’t A Good Game For Either .. SGA Outplayed Both Of Them. 3- IHart Outplayed Lively & Gifford Combined. 4- To Me The 2nd Most Important Thing We Did Was Out Rebound Yall Which Is Where Yall Usually Kill Us .. Just Take Yall Lose We Took Ours When The Stakes Was High Now Its Time For Yall .. We See Yall Again Soon

  29. Personally I think that game just gave me more confidence in OKC if these two teams meet. Even though the OKC role players hit 3s, they also missed a ton of wide open looks last night, JDub's rim decisions still weren't great, and I can easily see him being more effective with Chet out there as another threat. PJ being out certainly changed the rebounding dynamic, but also Marshall, OMax, and Klay (to a lesser degree) played quite well and at a level I wouldn't count on them reaching consistently. OKC's worst minutes also came with Ajay Mitchell on the floor, they completely hemmoraged points whenever he was out there, and realistically, I don't think he's seeing the floor if it's a playoff series. You're probably getting more Caruso/Wallace/Dort/SGA in that case (He was -10 if you remove garbage time minutes, the only other negative OKC player was Hatenstein at -6 who I believe shared that stretch with Mitchell) Without the Mitchell minutes they would've won this game by 20+.

Side note: it feels like with DJJ gone Dallas has nobody who can credibly guard SGA.

  30. Yeah sucks for Orlando. A #1 overall pick, a #6 and a # 8 all missed the game for them. Good thing they have another #5, #6 an #8 on the roster,
