Why Kyrie Irving is HARDER to guard than Mavericks teammate Luka Doncic | Draymond Green

Draymond Green and Baron Davis break down the Dallas Mavericks’ killer backcourt with Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic and explain why Kyrie actually has the more complete offensive bag than Luka. Dray and Baron are also excited about AJ Dybantsa, the top player in the 2025 class, committing to BYU. They discuss NIL deals, their thoughts on AJ, and what success looks like for BYU.

  1. luka still harder to guard, bigger and debatably the best passer in the league. playing more off ball this season if you’ve been watching( that’s why this season his points have dropped). He literally is double teamed all game for the pass 3 years. give this man some respect

  2. Luka is a top 3 player because of his offense. Kyrie is a top 50 player became of his offense. Yeah one guy is harder to guard than the other.

  3. Its like comparing a bull to a matador. Ky has the better moves and Luka uses his weight to back down defense into what is almost uniquely his Triple Threat Position(Jokic also does it). They are different type of threats. as one would imagine a 6/1 pg vs a 6'7 pg would be.
Luka also a triple double threat every night. Ky is good but he's the 25/5 and 5 guy.

Great tandem if their defense eventually has a lock down POA defender like last season with DJJ who led the defense on the way to the finals (Maybe grimes can or they trade for Herb Jones).

  4. Kyrie is a better scorer only because kyrie can score in any type of offense. Luka needs to have the ball in his hands and slow the game down. Kyrie can score 1 v 1, off the ball, in transition or basically any way possible.

  5. Kyrie is unguardable, but Luka is irreplaceable. Mavs vs Thunder will be the story come the playoffs. Round 2!

  6. It's easily Luka. Just last season the man scored 73 points on only 33 shot attempts, that's a FG%of 76%, and a TS% of 92%!

Kyrie is also true greatness, but he can't carry the same scoring load that Luka does for a whole season, much less season after season.

  7. Yea well you are wrong, Luka averaged 34 last year. Hes in the realm of top scorers in league history like Jordan and Harden, not Kyrie the 2nd option

  8. If yall woukd listen yall woukd understadn why they sayin kyrie is harder to guard than luka yall keep talkin about size and everything when the fact is kyrie is an ELITE scorer EVERYWHERE on the court luka has spots kyrie desnt have spots the whole court is his spot and kyrie is definitely a better catch and shoot player than luka becasue kyrie been playon off ball his whole career outside of his stint in boston and oj top of that kyrie is way more efficent he has 50/40/90 season luka will never have that is kyrie a better player than luka its alot closer than yall think but NO he not a better player becasue of lukas passing abilities but YES he is harder to guard

  9. If BYU gave him 7 million, they'll make at least 21 off him. They wouldn't do that if they thought otherwise.

  10. Kyrie is an overated scorer
Until he leads the league in scoring as the main scoring option on his team facing double and triple teams please don’t put him in that conversation

  11. Luka is a consistently far better scorer, I love Kyrie but for whatever reason people selectively only remember games where he cooks, which is I'd say is every other game, and in between he'll be OK. This is what separates a n2 like Ky from guys like SGa, Jokic, Giannis, Luka etc.

  12. Question: Can you be a better scorer if you've never averaged more points?

I mean I don't have the breakdown of points and points from free throws. I'm sure Kyrie is historically more efficient but…..Luka averages more points.

  13. Luka's usage is the highest in NBA history..he also gets a billion free throws a game..kyrie is almost averaging 50-40-90 his whole career on 25/5/5 splits…if kyrie had luka's usage and even a quarter of his free throw attempts…its not even close….luka stat pads a lot as welll….everytime there is a blowout mavs will still keep luka in the game so he can get his stats..but NBA media is not gonna push kyrie cuz of his political stance and views…

  14. it's easily harder to guard Luka because of how he can break down any defense, plus he's an elite 1 on 1 scorer in his career

  15. Luka driving & pump faking kills me.. No one was even reacting to it in the playoffs but he kept doing it.. Dallas needs a system.. They don’t have sets to get easy looks.. Like how the Celtics use Jrue as the roll man.. Their offense is stagnant.. & often comes down to Luka or Ky creating.. & Luka gets the lion share.. & saying this about a team with a hall of fame PG as its coach confuses my soul

  16. I like draymonds analysis and I still agree Kyrie has 0 offensive deficiency’s but Luka still better bruh. Lol most Nights ppl will just double team and blitz luka like he’s MJ. I’d say Kyrie is more dangerous and lethal than luka but luka is still the overall best offensive player between the 2. And Ik ur reading this comment like “that doesn’t even make sense”. That’s how insane that 1,2 combo is !!

It’s like Naruto and Sasuke, Iron man and Thor, Goku and Vegeta, Karma and Nagisa. One is looking for the that one lethal blow the other is going to wear u out over time.

  17. Luka has more deficiencies in terms of individual skills, but Kyrie's collective deficiency is that he can;t constantly get himself easy shots at the rim and free throw line, so most of his shots are actually above average difficulty, it's just that he's so amazing he makes like 45-52% of them. But Luka can get easier shots and the shots that he does take that are stupid aren't that stupid because he doesn't need much if any sepaeation cause he's taller. Tthat's what keeps Kyrie capped at around 28 ppg and luka at 34 ppg.
