When the Warriors and Mavericks broke the record for most 3 point makes in a game, it prompted Coach Nick to examine whether the fans complaints about too many 3 point shots was warranted.

It’s been the same problems for a while now. I think the stars missing games was the icing on the cake
The reason I personally watch less games is all down to the refs. The NBA is so soft with fouls which I hate. I want more physical play in the paint but most refs call every kind of small contact BUT some other refs just let every major contact go and so it's just really frustrating and too inconsistent to watch enjoyably. So much of what I love about the NBA is the back chat/fighting/physical play between players and the aggression but the refs seem to want to stomp that out by giving technical fouls for smiling or celebrating too much. Tech fouls for hanging on the ring too long after an amazing dunk? What the hell? Does the NBA think that is good for the ratings?
Just to be clear, if anyone at NBA is paying attention. I live in the UK and your streaming service is outrageously expensive. That's why I watch highlights on YouTube.
That's it.
That's the reason.
Look at Curry man so inspirational
My friend I want to see some dunks and plays. First of all you take 2 teams that are really really good im shooting 3s here and still, that's not what I want to see and yes true it's the right strategy if you want to win. It just doesn't change the fact that it is less entertaining.
Math works – the supremacy of the three is here to stay
Luka mentioned in the same breath with curry? Wow!!! The USA media needs to promote Luka more often
My wife loves a deep discharge 😂
there needs to be a rule where you get 7 attempts per quarter, and after that every missed 3 makes you lose a point.
Unassisted 3s are unsavory for the most part, but not nearly as bad as the incessant foul baiting that happens.
You didn't use a good example. This game was one of those rare one where the 3's were falling. And there's about 5-6 teams – out of 30 – that can replicate that kind of shooting. The majority of games don't look like that. This game does not reflect what happens on a nightly basis
It's kind of weird to me that stepback 3's have become the flash point for this debate. The reason the stepback 3 has proliferated is that it is actually a pretty good shot. Players who take lots of these shots tend to shoot better on these shots than they do other types of 3-point shots. It LOOKS like a bad shot to an old-school fan but the fact is these shots go in at a high rate and should be taken when they are available.
One thing I would like to see Coach Nick or one of the other X-and-O influencers do is actually figure out which shots are the bad shots that high-volume, less efficient shooters are taking and perhaps how these shots come about in the offense. There is some reason Luka is only a marginal 3pt shooter by percentage and it isn't stepbacks, which he makes at a very good clip;
Going from Olympics to nba season you can definitely see the difference.
Your video has nice argument but man, jacking up threes from start to finish is boring. Shooting threes are low percentage shots to begin with.
Bring back defense is the cure
My issue with today’s NBA isn’t the explosion in 3-point shooting, it’s the constant interruption to games through fouls or timeouts. You can’t properly enjoy the flow of a game anymore.
It doesn’t help that the regular season is way too long as well. There are way too many games and it just dilutes the quality of the league.
Nope. Makes a sh*tty viewing experience.
It has nothing to do with 3s. I have absolutely nothing against them especially if both teams are knocking them down at this level. It’s all the region locks and subscriptions you need to watch certain games and teams.
i cant speak for everyone, but for me, i don't watch much nba anymore because I get to see everything from social media. why watch the game when I can watch highlights of the game during and after the game? This may be a casual take but watching highlights is more time efficient and more enjoyable (to me) than watching games. Then I get on tiktok and see 100 different think pieces and highlights of what happened in the game. I've gotten used to and enjoy hearing about the different narratives and hearing peoples opinions more than watching the dam games. I get more enjoyment from watching someone else's breakdown of the nba rather than the nba itself. I mean I've literally watched more BBALLBREAKDOWN's youtube vids this year than nba games. Also my attention span has been absolutely fried over the past few years that I honestly can't stand commercials. It feels like as soon as i turn the game on, they call a timeout and go to commercial break which makes me just turn it off and watch youtube (ad-free with premium) or something. And tbh, so many other forms of enjoyable content are easily accessible that I don't feel like I'm missing anything from not watching games. But I will say, I recently went to see a pelicans vs warriors game in person, and I very much enjoyed it. Definitely more enjoyable in person, atleast for me.
Lengthy Video reviews, ads for gambling and alcohol… Same commercials & ads over and over…in general ads kill it for me. I had to suffer for many years no other option, but then i found Youtube i can watch the 10 minute recap no ads (with premium subscription).
So much better to get my NBA fix that way.
I'm probably not counted anymore as a "viewer" but i watch religiously.
Making 10-20 shots at 2 is less efficient than 6-19 from 3 based on analytics. Ppl like seeing the ball go in the basket.
All these analytics never give a damn about the product. Its entertainment at end of day. Seeing cardio for 48 mins & 75 threes with 22 going in.
3pt % has NOT gone up in 20 yrs. So fans are just seeing more missed shots. No competitive drive, no nuance to the game just buddies doing shooting drills making 40 million dollars to take 6 threes a game.
Your video didnt mention the 30 other threes that Luka/Curry dont take that morons who shouldnt shoot are taking for each team.
Asking this era of young fans who dont even watch full games to watch CLOSER & admire how 3pt open shots are generated means you already LOST.
Those who watch and love the game on that level. Never fell in love w this generation and grew up when men didnt shy from conflict, contact, and didnt live on load management to increase their years optimizing their stats without carrying about the fans.
Steph didnt change the game. The idiots who thought thejr 6’4 guard could do 90% of what Prime Steph Curry could do are the ones that ruined it. HC Watson in PHO was told overnight we are taking 35 threes. His response.. “cool who is gonna shoot them?”
Switching defenses make it difficult to get that exciting superstar guarding superstar matchup. The superstar rarely if ever defends the other teams' best player.
Lets petition to remove the 3 point line?
Coach Nick, directly leads to the best three-point shot they’re ever going to get? Respectfully, Luka could’ve shot-faked (or even attacked the middle) and swung it to Klay Thompson for the exact same shot. Maybe even without the fake.
I like your positivity and hope you can illuminate more nuance that I miss. But I’m suddenly very disinterested in watching NBA basketball because of this new style. I guess it’s not really new.
It's just dumb to suggest three pointers.A reason why no one watches. People can't afford it.I don't know what channel s*** is on.
the modern NBA product is unwatchable
One issue I have with the argument that this fast-paced three-point shooting style of basketball is superior to more structured, patiently paced styles is there’s no baseline in that argument for that comparison. Comparing it to 90s basketball, for example, isn’t a proper comparison. Players were different obviously, but also condition differently as well. Sure someone like Steph Curry has performed historically well with his NBA career while playing rez ball, but who knows if he would’ve won three or four more titles if he were playing in a different system that still allowed him to stretch the floor (and celebrate himself by himself every time he does something good).
This is disingenuous lol… you take the game til the last threes made ever and choose the worst clips to show lol
Send this to the hoop collective guys, great job again Coach
non called violations and unfavorable calls against the defenders kill the competitiveness of NBA.
Coach, you are barking at the wrong tree
It's ok when good teams with decent percentages does this. But it ruins the fun when teams with low shooting percentages do this.
Curry was well prior to Doncic so cease with that shit…
The decline of ratings is because watching NBA has become too expensive. NOT 3 points duh
If they shot 25%.. OK… but they shot above 50%!!!
Its almost like clickbait. It is not about understanding the peeve, but rather pointing out the excitement that brings the 3 point shots. He does not even consider the fact that it might not be a net positive, despite everything he said. I think there is a true excitement on threes and plays revolving around it, but it does not make an overall better product as a net positive given that the downsides far surpasses the positives.
Additionally, as a literate as BBall is on the matter, his omission on the foul baiting, the traveling and the illegal screens that also makes the 3 point shot undesirable makes me believe he did make this video the feed the algorithm.
I love the modern nba , faster and more entertaining , plus it requires higher iq , it’s less physical and more skill based.
I have a very unpopular opinion probably, but i'm european so im used to constant play, not lots of timeouts and stuff. The constant break of play because of whatever the reason might be is just soooo boring. And then the fkn arenas do a little game or shout out a veteran and then i'm sitting there like wtff am i watching. Especially the 4th quarter is horrible. Its got lots oftimeouts, coaches challenges, referee reviews etc and that just makes me not want to watch and just watch highlights the next day. Just my opinion though…
Ratings are down because people are pirating any argument ab the league that uses ratings to support it is propaganda
The NBA should have a 3pt shot limit by ever quarter like around 10. If the team shoots over 10 already… any 3-point shot after will only count as 2 pts.
And another one is when a player has a dunk it will have an extra free throw. And if an attempted dunk gets fouled… it will have 3 FTs.
This is why nobody plays defense and they can play minutes because nobody runs
