Did Mat Ishbia RUIN The Phoenix Suns?
The Phoenix Suns are in one of the worst positions in the NBA after falling to multiple games below .500, despite having Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. Erik Ruby and Espo sit down and discuss if new owner Mat Ishbia destroyed the team with his urgency and tendency to make big moves and trades that changed the trajectory of the team when it was built around Chris Paul, Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson and Deandre Ayton.

Right moves, but he gave up too much to get them. If he didn't give up bridges to get Durant, it would've been a good trade. We got a massive downgrade for Ayton instead of an upgrade. We traded for Beal, but we should've lifted his no trade clause in order to for him to come here.
Looking back, if we had the pieces we have now with the team with cp and Ayton, we would be a title contender
Mat Ishbia is a million times better than the prior owner in every single regard. I'll never forget Sarver selling draft picks for cash while we were contending with Nash. Guess where Kevin Garnett wanted to go instead of Boston? Too bad our owner was so cheap he squeaks when he walks.
Ruin? No. While his moves drastically altered the current landscape and the horizon ahead for the team, the option to pull the plug on KD, Beal and even Booker would reload the draft bank and should give the team a haul of youth and potential. All that said, it should be argued that the team would of been much better off with a few tweaks, instead of a complete roster revision.
We should have never fired Monty.
This is Blasphemy y’all need to watch your mouth on Matt Ishbia ungrateful
Yes. Yes he did. But the tv deal move was a good idea
The way espo nonchalantly said trade Booker was disgusting, nasty work
If you don’t think the Suns are in a bad place. That’s dumb. Tanking is literally the lowest place you can be.
Ishbia has done all the right things in terms of the brand and functional aspects of managing a team. Aka, the tv deal, spending on facilities, customer experience, free food etc. Those are all great things that should be praised. Obviously sarver was a terrible human being alongside terrible ownership of the Suns. But Ishbia crossed the line when the day after he got the keys he traded for Durant. All the best teams in the league are teams that have had years long consistency and trials and tribulations. Trading for 35 year old KD started the "must win right now" clock which is what screwing this team over
Espo even bringing up trading Devin booker is a fireable offense
Basically destroying a team that was capable of winning a championship
Since everybody want to forget and try to change the past let’s speak some facts.
Ayton wanted to leave, he even said it.
Fans hated that cam Johnson was always hurt
Fans said Mikal could never be nothing more than a 3rd option, they talked about him so bad when book and cp3 were out injured.
Fans were scared of the Dallas mavs and said this team will never win a championship after that series.
Just about every fan wanted Monty fired.
Every fan said cp3 was old and needed to be traded.
You traded Ayton, the twins, Jae crowder, cp3 for kd, Beal, nurkic, and Grayson. Why are people acting like they wanted those players still. Stop the cap, ishbia took a chance to make something shake, nothing is promised but you at least want to be in a good position to win the title.
All these Suns fans forget how trash Sarver was, Matt Isaiah has done everything in his power to try to win, and thats all you can ask for as a fan.
dude i can watch the Suns on tv & Kd is on the team- stfu w your click bait and manic whining. we also have 2 great rookies. keep shit in perspective and stop following the mania of social media.
Ishbia made unwise moves without much reflection in my opinion. That was my opinion when he pulled trigger on trade for Durant. The idiot should have known the coming repercussions of the second apron. I had problems with his moves from day 1 and felt they were rash. Its not revisionist. Just was right and you hate to admit your giddy kid on xmas morning reaction to his boldness was wrong
Time will tell… not looking too good so far.
Ishbia did what many new owners do. Make a big splash and thinking he could buy an immediate winner.
Matt ishbia and James jones remind me of ex nets owner , the Russian guy and Billy king . Dumb and dumber
he did what he could owners don't play but the beal deal was so bad
It's either him or James Jones
In a single summer he had to bright idea to:
Trade away the rest of their assets on a player that played the exact same position as his star player
decided NBA teams didn't need a single point guard on their roster
hired a "defensive minded" coach, then decided to not pick up a single defensive minded player
picked up a Center that can't defend or finish near the rim with consistency (then tried to validate it by saying "our center will be our point guard")
And said "Go win a championship". Then the next season tried to put a band aid on the horribly constructed roster by picking up a point guard and that's it.
If I asked you to write a list of things that EVERY championship level team needs, they would literally have none of them aside from a "Superstar" and scoring
Phoenix suns ishbia marks are as dumb as Kylar marks. It’s painful that we have to listen to them. Sarver was railroaded by espn and bob iger.
Let me guess no mention of Isiah Thomas running team for ishbia.
23:10 If i understand correctly this isnt true, only the draft picks we haven't traded 7 years out get sent to the end of the draft, meaning the team needs to start asset managing perfectly to ensure that they either have good guys on contract for years to come, or are constantly having decent guys and flipping them for assets to then make perfect trades too
Edit: According to a BetMGM article from yesterday our picks upcoming may be sent to the end of the draft after all. Houston (and maybe Washington) will be furious lmfao. Perfect asset management even more at play now, have to find even more steals at pick 30 every other year in order to hopefully still get cheap young depth
Espo trying to spin this as anything other than a train wreck is too funny. It’s clearly headed for a rebuild and how many teams get back to playoff contention within 3 years of starting to rebuild? This season is a wash and KD likely out sooner than later.
Yes
I think Bringing Brad in off the Bench is going to work in a big way. This Suns team is going to have a good second half. Jimmy Butler will be there, apparently the Suns are his first choice, they need to upgrade the Center posistion to be a legitimate contender 👏🏀🙏
Trading Ayton and Paul for beal is not a good idea. We know Ayton is like crying child that want to get out, but somebody train him like what golden state is doing with their bigman on their championship runs, the story won’t be the same
I like what the owners doing
Matt wanted to make a massive splash! He changed everything ! What’s left from that 2021 finals run.. Book and JJ lol
How many coaches fired, players traded for or gone since??
We aren’t about building a team anymore, this is just a superstar chasing organization.
Yes that Valley squad didn’t win the chip but was way more exciting on and off the coach
We’re on the Verge of being the Brooklyn Suns!
Ishbia made this team far worse.
Beal was the only wrong move
Paying more for a worse product is objectively ruining it…
I was personally 100% against trading Bridges and cam n the pics for KD.. but after we made the trade I was then very much looking forward to that team with Ayton still no matter how much of a powder puff he was.. so then the beal trade I was 100% against as well and in the end I was right on both… And I'm just an average Joe who doesn't make millions of dollars a year to no basketball
Ayton playing exactly how he always played would have been a great fit on this Booker Durant team
steven adams is still the best choice to trade for nurkic. Adams is a starter but is playing a backup center at Houston. He is a monster rebounder and can catch lobs.

The entire league knows where this is going: Devin Booker to Houston for your picks back. The sooner it happens, the better deal you will get.
Suns actually dealt 12 first round picks for Kevin Durant—4 in the original trade, 6 that Nets got for Mikal Bridges, and 2 that they are going to get for Cam Johnson. Phoenix could have maximized value by doing multiple trades ahead of the KD deal to get him.
I blame James Jones. He's ultimately the one who is probably bringing these ideas to Ishbia. If the Suns don't win a playoff series this year, then he should be fired.
I listen to literally every single Suns podcast that exists and these two dudes have the worst takes of anyone I’ve heard. Not surprised that they made a title like this slandering our great owner. I’m not going to listen to this video (nor should you). Make sure to Hulk smash that 👎 button and unsubscribe if you support Mat Ishbia
I like the energy and positive changes Ishbia has brought, but he’s been like a bull in a china shop with the personnel moves he’s made.
Jones didn’t want to give up bridges in the KD trade but Ishbia was adamant on getting his guy. Of course we get bounced out of those playoffs and there had already been issues between Monty and DA, so it made sense to get rid of one of them, but why both at the same time?
I don’t think Monty ever got enough time to work with KD, nor did he get a chance to work with the new group of players when we finally traded away DA. The trade for Beal was just terrible, and I’m just curious how much say Jones really had in that deal or was it just Ishbia stepping on toes again?
The fact that we’re talking about possibly blowing this up in the offseason because we currently have like zero trade capital shows from a pure basketball perspective, Ishbia has not done a great job so far.
